Zymosan is a fungi-derived pathogen-associated molecular pattern. It activates the immune system and induces the reduction of feed passage rate in the gastrointestinal tract of vertebrates including birds. However, the mechanism mediating the zymosan-induced inhibition of feed passage in the gastrointestinal tract remains unknown. Since the medulla oblongata regulates the digestive function, it is plausible that the medulla oblongata is involved in the zymosan-induced inhibition of feed passage. The present study was performed to identify the genes that were affected by zymosan within the medulla oblongata of chicks (Gallus gallus) using an RNA sequencing approach. We found that mRNAs of several bioactive molecules including neuropeptide Y (NPY) were increased with an intraperitoneal (IP) injection of zymosan. The increase of mRNA expression of NPY in the medulla oblongata was also observed after the IP injection of lipopolysaccharide, derived from gram-negative bacteria. These results suggest that medullary NPY is associated with physiological changes during fungal and bacterial infection. Furthermore, we found that intracerebroventricular injection of NPY and its receptor agonists reduced the feed passage from the crop. Additionally, the injection of NPY reduced the feed passage from the proventriculus to lower digestive tract. NPY also suppressed the activity of duodenal activities of amylase and trypsin. The present study suggests that fungi- and bacteria-induced activation of the immune system may activate the NPY neurons in the medulla oblongata and thereby reduce the digestive function in chicks.

Although the use of incision-free endoscopy for foreign body (FB) removal in dogs and cats has been extensively documented, its application in birds remains limited. Thus, we present the endoscopic removal of gastrointestinal (GI) FBs from psittacine birds, employing different patient positioning and anesthesia methods. Two blue-and-yellow macaws () and a Triton cockatoo () were examined. X-ray imaging revealed FBs situated in the proventriculus in each case. The FBs, all identified as feeding tubes, were safely removed using grasping forceps during the endoscopic procedure, and no severe complications occurred. Based on the outcomes of each operation, the most suitable patient position may be ventral recumbency rather than dorsal recumbency, with the use of a mask or endotracheal intubation, depending on the anticipated operation time. However, a larger number of cases would be necessary to confirm the optimal patient positioning and anesthesia method.

An adult sulphur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) was unexpectedly found dead and was presented for post-mortem examination. Macroscopically, the proventricular wall was expanded by an infiltrative off-white mass, 10 mm in diameter, with secondary mucosal ulceration. Cytological examination of impression smears revealed a neoplastic epithelial cell population forming occasional well-defined acini with secretory product. Histologically, the neoplastic cells were predominantly arranged in acini and tubules, with fewer in small clusters, supported by a desmoplastic stroma. Neoplastic cells were polygonal, with mostly well-demarcated cell boundaries and a moderate amount of eosinophilic cytoplasm that was multifocally markedly distended by more intensely eosinophilic material. There was an increased nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratio with moderately sized to large nuclei (approximately 15 μm diameter) with lightly to densely stippled chromatin and single or paired prominent basophilic nucleoli. The mitotic count was 19 in 10 high-power fields (2.37 mm), with scattered bizarre mitotic figures and atypia including moderate anisocytosis and anisokaryosis and moderate cellular and nuclear pleomorphism. There was frequent intratubular brightly eosinophilic proteinaceous material, which was Alcian blue and periodic acid‒Schiff positive. Proventricular lymphovascular invasion was detected, with metastases within the ventriculus and lungs. The macroscopic, cytological and histological appearance of the neoplasm was consistent with a proventricular adenocarcinoma.

Morphological changes in the late-embryo-stage gastrointestinal tract of Nigerian indigenous chicken were investigated using anatomical techniques. The paraffin-embedded sections were stained with haematoxylin and eosin and periodic acid Schiff-Alcian blue (pH 2.5) stains. During the late pre-hatch period, the framework of the stomach was already established, but glands were yet poorly developed. Randomly oriented pre-glandular cells in the lamina propria mucosae at embryonic day (ED) 14 became organized into elongated simple tubular glands at ED 19 and assumed adult morphology at post-hatch day (PD) 1. Acidic and neutral mucin deposits were associated with the glandular cells. In the small intestine, enterocytes of the tunica epithelialis mucosae transformed from cuboidal-shaped cells (at ED 14) to tall columnar cells (at PD 1). Short crypts of Lieberkühn, goblet cells, microfold cells and enteroendocrine cells were evident at ED 19, while the lamina propria mucosae and submucosa contained mesenchymal cells, reticular cells and isolated lymphoblasts. Similarly, the crypts, lymphoblasts, mesenchymal and reticular cells were also associated with the lamina propria mucosae and submucosa of the caecum and colorectum at ED 19. It was inferred from these findings that extensive cellular and tissue modifications occur in the gastrointestinal tract within the narrow window of the late pre-hatch period. The definitive gut tunics, epithelium, glandular tissues, immune-competent cells and tissues are formed as a result. Thus, the embryonic gut of the bird is made capable of assuming its necessary functions of food digestion, nutrient absorption, water and ion re-absorption, immune surveillance, antibody production and immune responses at hatch.

The application of corn bran (CB) to laying ducks via iso-energy and iso-nitrogen diets is rarely reported. Six hundred laying ducks (49 weeks) were equally assigned to five treatments: the control group with 0% CB and the other four groups with 3%, 6%, 9%, and 12% CB. The experiment lasted for 11 weeks. With the increase in CB, the relative weight of the proventriculus, gizzard, and ileum and the content and proportion of butyric acid in the cecal digesta were quadratically changed ( < 0.05), and the highest value was observed in the 12% CB group. Compared with the control, the 12% CB group showed decreased Deferribacteres, Spirochaetota, and Fusobacteriota at the phyla level and showed increased and decreased and at the genus level ( < 0.10); the 12% CB group also showed 46 different metabolites, which are related to and ( < 0.05). The 12% CB group showed increased ( < 0.05) albumen height at week 8 and yolk color at weeks 4 and 8 compared with the control. Overall, dietary inclusion of 3% to 12% CB is a possible feeding strategy for laying ducks under iso-energy and iso-nitrogen conditions, and the 12% CB group was more effective.

It is well-established that the genetic diversity, regional prevalence, and broad host range of astroviruses significantly impact the poultry industry. In July 2022, a small-scale commercial broiler farm in China reported cases of growth retardation and a 3% mortality rate. From chickens displaying proventriculitis and pancreatitis, three chicken astroviruses (CAstV) isolates were obtained and named SDAU2022-1-3. Complete genomic sequencing and analysis revealed the unique characteristics of these isolates from known CAstV strains in ORF1a, ORF1b, and ORF2 genes, characterized by an unusually high variability. Analysis of amino acid mutations in ORF1a, ORF1b, and ORF2 indicated that the accumulation of these mutations played a pivotal role in the emergence of the variant strain. Inoculation experiments demonstrated that affected chickens exhibited liver and kidney enlargement, localized proventricular hemorrhage, and a dark reddish-brown appearance in about two-thirds of the pancreas. Histopathological examination unveiled hepatic lymphocytic infiltration, renal tubular epithelial cell swelling, along with lymphocytic proventriculitis and pancreatitis. Quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analysis indicated viremia and viral shedding at 3 days post-infection (dpi). The proventriculus displayed the highest viral loads, followed by the liver, kidney, duodenum, and pancreas. Liver parameters (AST and ALT) and kidney parameters (UA and UN) demonstrated mild damage consistent with earlier findings. While the possibility of new mutations in the ORF2 gene of CAstV causing proventriculitis and pancreatitis warrants further investigation, these findings deepen our comprehension of CAstV's pathogenicity in chickens. Additionally, they serve as valuable references for subsequent research endeavors.

Enzymolytic soybean meal improves growth performance, economic efficiency and organ development associated with cecal fermentation and microbiota in broilers offered low crude protein diets.
The objective of this experiment was to determine the effect of low crude protein (CP) diets containing increasing amounts of enzymolytic soybean meal (ESBM) on growth performance, economic benefit and organ development and the role of cecal fermentation and microbiota in broilers. A total of 360 one-day-old Arbor Acres chicks were randomly allocated into 6 groups with 6 replicates and 10 chicks each. The six dietary treatments consisted of a standard high-CP diet (PC), a low-CP diet (NC), and an NC diet with 0.5, 1.0, 1.5%, or 2.0% ESBM. The experiment lasted for 42 days. Compared to PC, NC showed decreased ( < 0.05) average daily gain (ADG) in broilers from 22 to 42 days and from 1 to 42 days, while increasing levels of ESBM quadratically increased ( < 0.05) ADG from 1 to 42 days. Feed cost and total revenue in the NC were lower ( < 0.05) than that in the PC, while supplementation with ESBM in the NC linearly increased ( < 0.05) net profit and economic efficiency in broilers. There were significant differences ( < 0.05) in the liver, proventriculus and gizzard indices between the PC and NC groups, and supplementation with ESBM linearly increased ( < 0.05) the relative weights of liver, pancreas, proventriculus and gizzard in broilers at 42 days of age. The PC group had a higher cecal acetic acid concentration at 21 days and propionic acid concentration at both 21 and 42 days than the NC group ( < 0.05). Cecal acetic acid and propionic acid concentrations linearly increased ( < 0.05) with increasing levels of ESBM in broilers at 42 days of age. No significant differences in ACE, Chao1, Shannon and Simpson indices were observed among groups ( > 0.05), while the cecal abundances of , and increased ( < 0.05) with the increasing level of ESBM in the low-CP diets. In conclusion, feeding ESBM improved economic efficiency, digestive organ development, cecal fermentation and microbial community composition, and up to 2.0% ESBM addition had no negative effect on the growth performance in broilers fed low CP diets.

The development of the glandular stomach was studied using light, electron, and fluorescent microscopy. The research used 130 Japanese quail eggs from the second to the seventeenth days of incubation.The proventriculus could be distinguished on the3rd day. Its wall consisted of four tunics: tunica mucosa, very thin tunica submucosa, tunica muscularis, and outermost tunica serosa. Mucosal folds appeared on the 8th day. The luminal epithelium was pseudostratified columnar in type and transformed into simple columnar by the 10th day. The mucosal papillae emerged on the 11th day, spiraled on the 15th day, and had a distinct whorled look by the 17th day. Two types of proventricular glands were recognized: compound tubuloalveolar and simple tubular glands. Both types were situated within the tunica mucosa. On the 4th day, the compound glands emerged as evaginations of the lining epithelium. It began to branch on the 8th day and became well established by the 11th day. The simple glands appeared on the 11th day as localized down-growths of the luminal epithelium forming solid cords. On the 15th day, many of them showed complete canalization. On the 8th day, the muscular coat was differentiated into the lamina muscularis mucosae and tunica muscularis.

The hummingbird family (Trochilidae) includes the smallest and most metabolically active vertebrates. They have a high energy demand because of their extraordinarily high metabolic rates during hovering while looking for food. The morphology of the digestive apparatus is related to the feeding habits of the species. The anatomy and histology of the digestive apparatus in these birds have not been thoroughly described except for their tongue. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the gross anatomy and histology of the alimentary canal and adnexal glands in four species from the hummingbird family: Amazilia tzacatl (n = 2), Amazilia saucerottei (n = 1), Amazilia amabilis (n = 1) and Anthracothorax nigricollis (n = 1). The alimentary canal was found to be very short. The epithelium of the oesophagus and crop showed variable degrees of keratinization and parakeratotic areas as normal conditions. A dorsal crop was observed as a differential characteristic of these birds. Like other birds, the ventricular mucosa in hummingbirds was covered and protected by the cuticle and showed a tunica muscularis constituted by three muscle layers. There was no isthmus between the proventriculus and ventriculus. The intestine presents a well-differentiated duodenum and jejunum. However, no ileum nor caeca were identified. The intestinal villi length, base width, crypt depth and area showed differences among the specimens studied among the small and large intestines. In addition, variations in thickness were observed in the smooth muscle tunica along the intestine. In all the studied species, the liver was composed of two lobes (right and left), and no gall bladder was observed during gross inspection or in histological sections. Finally, the pancreas was observed as a diffused organ forming islets related to all the small intestines. Some anatomical differences were observed among the studied species, mainly concerning Anthracothorax nigricollis. Hummingbirds showed very interesting and distinctive morphological characteristics. Hummingbirds possess unique and intriguing morphological characteristics. Future comparative studies related to the anatomy, histology and function of the digestive apparatus of hummingbirds are required. Expanding our understanding of the digestive morphophysiology in these bird species is crucial. However, it is necessary to conduct more comprehensive studies encompassing a wider range of hummingbird species and including a larger number of individuals to obtain more conclusive findings.

Eusociality is an extreme form of social behavior found in some invertebrates, especially in ants, which allows them to thrive and dominate the environment through their cooperative and organized behavior. Their complex colony structure and social behavior is provided, among other things, by morphological adaptations, such as the unique structure and a huge variety of proventriculi relative to other insect groups. Here, we report the first discovery of proventriculus by X-ray microcomputed tomography (µCT) in the fossil ants †Oecophylla brischkei Mayr, 1868 and †Oecophylla crassinoda Wheeler, 1922. This is a remarkable fossil find, as it opens up new perspectives for research on phylogeny, the evolution of ant sociality and feeding behavior. We present a 3D model of the proventriculus in Oecophylla smaragdina (Fabricius, 1775) and a 3D model of the proventriculus in †Oe. brischkei and compare them. Fossil proventriculi are not fundamentally different in structure from the recent. Apparently, already in the late Eocene, the lifestyle and sociality of ants of the genus Oecophylla were similar to the one we are currently observing.
