Effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine formulas combined with acupuncture in the treatment of ovulation dysfunction infertility: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
BACKGROUND
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of traditional Chinese medicine formulas combined with acupuncture for the treatment of ovulation dysfunction infertility (ODI).
METHODS
From January 1, 2018 to March 12, 2023, 7 electronic databases, PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang Database, and CBM, were systematically searched to identify eligible randomized controlled trial studies.
RESULTS
Meta analysis showed that traditional Chinese medicine combined with acupuncture can more effectively improve sex hormone levels compared to Western medicine alone, including follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in older patients (standardized mean difference [SMD]: 3.00; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.35-3.66; P = .024, I 2 = 28%), FSH in younger patients (SMD: 0.45; 95% CI: -0.15, 1.05; P = .03, I 2 = 71%), estradiol (E2) (SMD: 7.50; 95% CI: v0.47, 15.48; P < .00001, I 2 = 99%), and progesterone (P) (SMD: 2.20; 95% CI: 2.07-2.33; P < .00001, I 2 = 29%). Compared to Western medicine alone, traditional Chinese medicine combined with acupuncture also had a better effect to increase ovulation rate (risk ratio [RR]: 2.46; 95% CI: 1.72-3.52; P < .00001, I 2 = 0%), pregnancy rate (RR: 2.50; 95% CI: 1.96-3.18; P < .00001, I 2 = 0%), maximum follicle diameter (MFD) (SMD: 2.27; 95% CI: 1.37-3.16; P < .00001, I 2 = 91%), and endometrial thickness (SMD: 1.71; 95% CI: 1.31-2.11; P < .00001, I 2 = 87%). The combination of traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture also had better effects on quality of life (RR: 0.19; 95% CI: 0.15-0.23; P < .00001, I 2 = 0%) and reduced adverse reactions (RR: 0.15; 95% CI: 0.05-0.48; P = .001, I 2 = 0%), compared to Western medicine alone.
CONCLUSION
This study shows evidence that traditional Chinese medicine formulas combined with acupuncture are an effective and safe treatment approach. However, this conclusion requires further confirmation due to the insufficient quality of the included trials.

BACKGROUND
Well programmed strength and conditioning training is an indispensable part of the long-term training process for athletes in individual and team sports to improve performance and prevent injuries. Yet, there is a limited number of studies available that examine the effects of resistance training (RT) on muscular fitness and physiological adaptations in elite female athletes.
OBJECTIVES
This systematic review aimed to summarize recent evidence on the long-term effects of RT or combinations of RT with other strength-dominated exercise types on muscular fitness, muscle morphology, and body composition in female elite athletes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A systematic literature search was conducted in nine electronic databases (Academic Search Elite, CINAHL, ERIC, Open Access Theses and Dissertations, Open Dissertations, PsycINFO, PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and SPORTDiscus) from inception until March 2022. Key search terms from the MeSH database such as RT and strength training were included and combined using the operators "AND," "OR," and "NOT". The search syntax initially identified 181 records. After screening for titles, abstracts, and full texts, 33 studies remained that examined the long-term effects of RT or combinations of RT with other strength-dominated exercise types on muscular fitness, muscle morphology, and body composition in female elite athletes.
RESULTS
Twenty-four studies used single-mode RT or plyometric training and nine studies investigated the effects of combined training programs such as resistance with plyometric or agility training, resistance and speed training, and resistance and power training. The training duration lasted at least 4 weeks, but most studies used ~ 12 weeks. Studies were generally classified as 'high-quality' with a mean PEDro score of 6.8 (median 7). Irrespective of the type or combination of RT with other strength-dominated exercise regimens (type of exercise, exercise duration, or intensity), 24 out of 33 studies reported increases in muscle power (e.g., maximal and mean power; effect size [ES]: 0.23 < Cohen's d < 1.83, small to large), strength (e.g., one-repetition-maximum [1RM]; ES: 0.15 < d < 6.80, small to very large), speed (e.g., sprint times; ES: 0.01 < d < 1.26, small to large), and jump performance (e.g., countermovement/squat jump; ES: 0.02 < d < 1.04, small to large). The nine studies that examined the effects of combined training showed significant increases on maximal strength (ES: 0.08 < d < 2.41, small to very large), muscle power (ES: 0.08 < d < 2.41, small to very large), jump and sprint performance (ES: 0.08 < d < 2.41, small to very large). Four out of six studies observed no changes in body mass or percentage of body fat after resistance or plyometric training or combined training (ES: 0.026 < d < 0.492, small to medium). Five out of six studies observed significant changes in muscle morphology (e.g., muscle thickness, muscle fiber cross-sectional area; ES: 0.23 < d < 3.21, small to very large). However, one study did not find any changes in muscle morphology (i.e., muscle thickness, pennation angle; ES: 0.1 < d < 0.19, small).
CONCLUSION
Findings from this systematic review suggest that RT or combined RT with other strength-dominated exercise types leads to significant increases in measures of muscle power, strength, speed, and jump performance in elite female athletes. However, the optimal dosage of programming parameters such as training intensity and duration necessary to induce large effects in measures of muscular fitness and their physiological adaptations remain to be resolved in female elite athletes.

A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to determine the effects of resistance training under hypoxic conditions (RTH) on muscle hypertrophy and strength development. Searches of PubMed-Medline, Web of Science, Sport Discus and the Cochrane Library were conducted comparing the effect of RTH versus normoxia (RTN) on muscle hypertrophy (cross sectional area (CSA), lean mass and muscle thickness) and strength development [1-repetition maximum (1RM)]. An overall meta-analysis and subanalyses of training load (low, moderate or high), inter-set rest interval (short, moderate or long) and severity of hypoxia (moderate or high) were conducted to explore the effects on RTH outcomes. Seventeen studies met inclusion criteria. The overall analyses showed similar improvements in CSA (SMD [CIs] = 0.17 [- 0.07; 0.42]) and 1RM (SMD = 0.13 [0.0; 0.27]) between RTH and RTN. Subanalyses indicated a medium effect on CSA for longer inter-set rest intervals and a small effect for moderate hypoxia and moderate loads favoring RTH. Moreover, a moderate effect for longer inter-set rest intervals and a trivial effect for severe hypoxia and moderate loads favoring RTH was found on 1RM. Evidence suggests that RTH employed with moderate loads (60-80% 1RM) and longer inter-set rest intervals (≥ 120 s) enhances muscle hypertrophy and strength compared to normoxia. The use of moderate hypoxia (14.3-16% FiO) seems to be somewhat beneficial to hypertrophy but not strength. Further research is required with greater standardization of protocols to draw stronger conclusions on the topic.

OBJECTIVE
Whether inhibition of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) promotes the regression of coronary atherosclerotic plaque in statin-treated individuals remains unclear. This study examined whether PCSK9 inhibitors combined with statin therapy could increase atherosclerotic plaque regression compared with statin therapy alone.
METHODS
PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), the database Clinical trials, and the Web of Science were searched to report the coronary atherosclerotic plaque of PCSK9 inhibitors using intravascular ultrasonography (IVUS) or optical coherence tomography (OCT) in statin patients. The weighted mean difference (WMD) of the random-effects/fixed-effects model was used to pool data that satisfied our inclusion criteria obtained from the included studies.
RESULTS
When compared with statin therapy alone, pooled studies revealed that PCSK9 inhibitors combined with statin therapy significantly decreased percent atheroma volume (PAV) (WMD: -1.06%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -1.39 to -0.73; P<0.001) and total atheroma volume (TAV) (WMD: -6.38 mm, 95% CI: -10.12 to -2.64; P=0.001). Moreover, the fibrous cap thickness (FCT) of the coronary atherosclerotic plaque increases to 21.31 um (WMD: 21.31, 95% CI: 7.08 to 35.53, P<0.001), and the maximum lipid arc decreases 10.9° (WMD: -10.9, 95% CI: -15.24 to -5.34, P<0.001).
CONCLUSION
In our systematic review and meta-analysis, PCSK9 inhibitors combined with statin therapy were found to be more effective than statin therapy alone for slowing coronary plaque progression by decreasing PAV, TAV, and increasing FCT, maximum lipid arc.

Tensiomyography (TMG) is a non-invasive instrument for measuring mechanical muscle contraction characteristics and measuring the maximum displacement of the muscle belly in the radial direction with respect to the muscle and the time needed to achieve this from electrical stimulation. There have been only been a reports of TMG in healthy adults. A systematic review of TMG reported a low proportion of female participants, with a small sample size. Therefore, it is unclear whether there is a difference in TMG parameters according to sex and between dominant and non-dominant feet. Furthermore, the relationship between TMG parameters and evaluations commonly used in clinical practice has not been clarified. This study aimed to clarify the characteristics of muscle contraction of the rectus femoris using TMG according to sex among healthy college students and its relationship with muscle function evaluation, such as lower limb muscle mass and muscle strength.
METHODS
This cross-sectional study included 91 healthy university students (18-24 years). Five tools were used: TMG, lower-limb muscle mass, rectus femoris thickness, isometric knee joint extension torque, and thigh circumference. Each parameter was compared by the generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) and Bonferroni's multiple comparison test, with sex as the without-subject factor and dominant/non-dominant foot as the within-subject factor. The correlation between the TMG parameters and other parameters was examined using Pearson's correlation coefficient for both males and females.
RESULTS
The results of the GLMM, in terms of the TMG parameters, an interaction was observed for maximum displacement (Dm); in the results of the multiple comparison test, Dm for the non-dominant leg was significantly lower in females than in males. A main effect and interaction were not observed for delay time (Td) and contraction time (Tc) by sex, dominant foot, or non-dominant foot. There was a main effect of sex on muscle function evaluation parameters (ρ ≤ 0.05). The correlation between TMG parameters for males and females and lower limb muscle mass, muscle thickness, joint torque, and thigh circumference were significantly correlated with some TMG parameters, lower limb muscle mass and muscle thickness (ρ ≤ 0.05). The absolute value of the correlation coefficient was low overall (0.20-0.38).
CONCLUSION
In healthy college students, TMG parameters for the rectus femoris showed sex differences in Dm, and there was a weak correlation between TMG parameters and lower limb muscle mass. TMG parameter evaluation may indicate a different function compared to the traditional muscle function assessment used in clinical practice. When using the Dm of the TMG as an evaluation battery for the rectus femoris muscle, it is important to consider sex-related differences.

Understanding the stomatognathic system disturbances is key to diagnosing them early and implementing rehabilitation approaches to promote functional recovery. The objective of this study was to systematically review all published data that examined the assessment and rehabilitation strategies for the stomatognathic system disturbances in patients with stroke. Five databases (i.e., PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science, and PEDro), were screened for manuscripts that included the assessment and rehabilitation strategies for stomatognathic system disturbances. The methodological quality was evaluated using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Sixteen articles were included in this systematic review. The most frequently reported symptoms in patients with stroke included stiffness and thickness of the masseter muscle on the affected side and suprahyoid muscles; facial muscles' asymmetry and weakness; temporomandibular disorders; and a reduced maximum lip force, tongue pressure, and saliva flow rate. The rehabilitation strategies more frequently reported included exercises directed to the jaw, temporomandibular joint, tongue, and neck. The mean score for methodological quality was 85%. The stomatognathic system disturbances are frequently reported among patients with stroke, leading to dysfunction in masticatory performance or swallowing. More studies on interventions for stomatognathic system disturbances are required before conclusions may be drawn. This systematic review has clinical implications for rehabilitation practices, given that the results may help to develop early assessment and rehabilitation strategies for stomatognathic disturbances in patients with stroke.

BACKGROUND
Monomorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT) is rare in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), management of which is challenging. Limited data exists on the utility of catheter ablation for the treatment of VT in this population.
OBJECTIVES
We aimed to assess clinical outcomes of catheter ablation for VT in HCM patients.
METHODS
A systematic search, without language restriction, using PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Google Scholar, and ClinicalTrials.gov was performed. The meta-analysis was performed using a meta-package for R version 4.0/RStudio version 1.2 and Freeman Tukey double arcsine method to establish the variance of raw proportions. Outcomes measured included (1) acute procedure success (defined as noninducible for clinical VT), (2) freedom from VT at follow-up, (3) mortality.
RESULTS
This systematic review of six studies (three from the United States and three from Japan) incorporated a total of 68 drug-refractory HCM patients who underwent VT radiofrequency catheter ablation (mean age 57.6 ± 13.3 years, mean LVEF 45.8 ± 15.4%, 85% men, maximum septal wall thickness 17.4 ± 4.6 mm, and 32.3% with an apical aneurysm). Acute procedural success was achieved in 84.5% patients (95% confidence interval [CI]: 70.6%-95.2%) with 27.9% patients had recurrent VT requiring multiple ablations (median 1, IQR 1-3). During the follow-up period (18.3 ± 11.7 months), the pooled incidence of freedom from recurrent VT after index procedure was 70.2% (95% CI: 51.9%-86.2%), while after the last ablation was 82.8% (95% CI: 57%-99.2%). There were two deaths during follow-up, one from heart failure and one from SCD 0.8% (95% CI: 0%-5.8%).
CONCLUSION
The results of our pooled analysis demonstrated that catheter ablation for VT in HCM patients was associated with high acute procedural success, and reduced VT recurrence-findings comparable to previously published reports in other disease substrates.

Osteoporosis (OP) is an age-related bone disease that has emerged as a worldwide public health concern due to its increasing incidence and high disability rate. Tanshinol [D (+) β-3,4-dihydroxyphenyl lactic acid, TS], a water-soluble component extracted from Salvia miltiorrhiza, has proven to be effective in attenuating OP and . However, there is insufficient evidence to support its clinical application. This meta-analysis aimed to investigate available OP animal model studies to demonstrate the antiosteoporosis effects of TS in a systematic manner. Electronic searches of related studies were conducted in the following databases: EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese VIP Database, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, and Wanfang. The retrieval date was January 2022, and there were no time or language restrictions. The CAMARADES 10-item quality checklist was utilized to test the risk of potential bias for each study, and modifications were performed accordingly. The primary outcome was bone mineral density (BMD, which included the femur and lumbar spine); and secondary outcomes were parameters for trabecular bone such as bone volume over total volume (BV/TV), trabecular number (Tb.N), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), trabecular separation (Tb.Sp), conditions of the femur (including bone maximum load and bone elastic load), and markers of bone metabolism (serum osteocalcin, S-OCN). A total of nine studies including 176 rats were chosen for this analysis. Egger's test revealed the presence of publication bias in various studies regarding the primary outcome. According to this systematic review, TS significantly increased the BMD of the femur (BMD-femur) ( = 4.40; 95% CI = 1.61 to 7.19; = 0.002, = 94.6%), BMD of the lumbar spine (BMD-lumbar) (SMD = 6.390; 95% CI = 2.036 to 10.744; = 0.004, = 95.9%), BV/TV (SMD = 0.790; 95% CI = 0.376 to 1.204; = 0.000, = 10.8), Tb.N (SMD = 0.690; 95% CI = 0.309 to 1.071; = 0.000, = 12%), Tb.Th (SMD = 0.772; 95% CI = 0.410 to 1.134; = 0.000, = 32.2%), and S-OCN (SMD = 3.13; 95% CI = 0.617 to 5.65; = 0.015, = 92.3%), while the Tb.Sp level was markedly decreased in OP models in comparison to the controls (SMD = -0.822; 95% CI = -1.207 to -0.437; = 0.000, = 0%). Moreover, TS treatment was associated with a significant improvement of the bone biomechanical indicators, including bone maximum load (SMD = 0.912; 95% CI = 0.370 to 1.455; = 0.001, = 40%) and elasticity load (SM = 0.821; 95% CI = 0.290 to 1.351; = 0.002, = 0%). Comparison of Efficacy and Safety Between Standard, Accelerated Epithelium-Off and Transepithelial Corneal Collagen Crosslinking in Pediatric Keratoconus: A Meta-Analysis.
PURPOSE
The purpose of the study is to compare the efficacy of standard epithelium-off CXL (SCXL), accelerated epithelium-off CXL (ACXL), and transepithelial crosslinking CXL (TECXL) for pediatric keratoconus.
METHODS
A literature search on the efficacy of SCXL, ACXL, and TECXL [including accelerated TECXL (A-TECXL)] for keratoconus patients younger than 18 years was conducted using PubMed, Cochrane Library, ClinicalTrials.gov, and EMBASE up to 2021. Primary outcomes were changes in uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and maximum keratometry (Kmax) after CXL. Secondary outcomes were changes in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), mean refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE), and central corneal thickness (CCT). Estimations were analyzed by weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI).
RESULTS
A number of eleven identified studies enrolled 888 eyes (SCXL: 407 eyes; ACXL: 297 eyes; TECXL: 28 eyes; A-TECXL: 156 eyes). For pediatric keratoconus, except for a significant greater improvement in BCVA at 24-month follow-up in SCXL (WMD = -0.08, 95%CI: -0.14 to -0.01, = 0.03, I = 71%), no significant difference was observed in other outcomes between the SCXL and ACXL groups. SCXL seems to provide greater changes in UCVA (WMD = -0.24, 95% CI: -0.34 to -0.13, < 0.00001, I = 89%), BCVA (WMD = -0.09, 95% CI: -0.15 to -0.04, = 0.0008, I = 94%), and Kmax (WMD = -1.93, 95% CI: -3.02 to -0.85, = 0.0005, I = 0%) than A-TECXL, with higher incidence of adverse events.
CONCLUSION
For pediatric keratoconus, both SCXL and ACXL appear to be comparable in the efficacy of visual effects and keratometric outcomes; SCXL seems to provide greater changes in visual and pachymetric outcomes than A-TECXL.

Antiosteoporosis Effect and Possible Mechanisms of the Ingredients of Fructus Psoraleae in Animal Models of Osteoporosis: A Preclinical Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
OBJECTIVE
() and its ingredients (IFP) have a variety of biological activities and are widely used to treat osteoporosis (OP). Herein, we conducted a systematic review to evaluate the efficacy of IFP for an animal model of OP from the current literatures. Potential mechanisms of IFP in the treatment of OP were also summarized.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
We carried out a search for electronic literature in the PubMed, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, EMBASE, Wanfang, Web of Science, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, and Cochrane Library, as well as Chinese VIP databases targeting articles published from inception to June 2021. The inclusion criteria were animal studies that assessed the efficacy and safety of IFP for OP, regardless of publication status or language. The exclusion criteria included (1) other types of studies (in vitro studies, case reports, clinical trials, reviews, abstracts, comments, and editorials), (2) combination with other compounds, (3) compared with other traditional Chinese medicine, (4) not osteoporosis or bone loss model, (5) studies with insufficient data, (6) lack of a control group, and (7) duplicate publications. The modified Collaborative Approach to Meta-Analysis and Review of Animal Data from Experimental Stroke (CAMARADES) 10-item quality checklist was used to evaluate the risk of bias of included studies. We computed the relative risk (RR) and the standard mean difference (SMD) for dichotomous outcomes and continuous outcomes, respectively. When heterogeneity was detected or there was significant statistical heterogeneity ( < 0.05 or > 50%), a random-effects model was employed, followed by further subgroup analysis and metaregression estimations to ascertain the origins of heterogeneity. Otherwise, we used a fixed-effects model ( ≥ 0.05 or ≤ 50%). The primary outcome measures were bone mineral density (BMD), serum osteocalcin(S-OCN), bone volume over total volume (BV/TV), trabecular number (Tb.N), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), trabecular separation (Tb.Sp), bone maximum load, and elasticity modulus. The secondary outcome measure was the antiosteoporosis mechanisms of IFP. The STATA 12.0 software was used to analyze the data.
RESULTS
Overall, 16 studies focusing on 379 animals were enrolled into the study. The risk of bias score of included studies ranged from 4 to 7 with an average score of 5.25. The present study provided the preliminary preclinical evidence that administration of IFP could significantly increase the S-OCN, BMD, BV/TV, and Tb.N while Tb.Th and Tb.Sp were remarkably decreased by IFP in OP model animals ( < 0.05). Moreover, IFP could significantly improve the bone biomechanical indicator bone maximum load and elasticity modulus ( < 0.05). In terms of the possible mechanisms of treatment of OP, IFP exerts anti-OP effects in animal models probably through osteoprotegerin/receptor activator of the nuclear factor-B ligand/receptor activator of nuclear factor-B (OPG/RANKL/RANK), peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR-)/Axin2/Wnt, antioxidative stress via forkhead box O3a (FoxO3a)/Axin2/Wnt, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B/mammalian target of rapamycin (PI3K/Akt/mTOR), estrogen-like effect, and gamma-aminobutyric acid/gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor (GABA/GABARI) signaling pathway.
CONCLUSION
Taken together, the findings suggest the possibility of developing IFP as a drug or an ingredient in diet for the clinical treatment of OP. We recommend that rigorous, as well as high-quality, trials involving large sample sizes should be conducted to confirm our findings.
