BACKGROUND
Bariatric surgery is a procedure for people with class II and III obesity who are unable to lose weight using traditional methods. The incidence rate of bariatric surgery in reproductive-age women is increasing rapidly, so the number of women who become pregnant after bariatric surgery is rising.
AIM
To collate and synthesise available literature regarding breastfeeding following bariatric surgery.
METHODS
This review was reported by the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-Scr). The review included peer-reviewed research studies and research-based conference abstracts on breastfeeding outcomes in mothers who have undergone bariatric surgery before pregnancy. Health databases were searched from 1990 to December 2023. Included studies were analysed using a narrative synthesis.
FINDINGS
From 1506 abstracts, 16 papers were identified. Three themes emerged from the analysis: challenges in exclusive breastfeeding, nutritional composition in breast milk, and breastfeeding experience. There was a tendency for lower breastfeeding rates and shorter durations in mothers who had bariatric surgery. Most studies focussed on the nutritional composition of breast milk however these results were mixed. Only three articles were qualitative, and their findings showed that women wanted more information and support about breastfeeding following bariatric surgery.
DISCUSSION
Our review indicates breastfeeding challenges in post-bariatric surgery mothers and reduced breastfeeding rates. It is unclear whether bariatric surgery impacts the nutritional quality of breast milk due to inconsistent study outcomes.
CONCLUSION
Future research is essential, specifically on understanding the breastfeeding concerns and experiences of women who have undergone bariatric surgery.

The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the literature assessing the effects of weaning practices on performance, behavior, and health of dairy calves. Only published, peer-reviewed articles written in English and specifically assessing the effects of weaning treatments on dairy calves were eligible for inclusion. Studies had to include 2 or more treatment groups that addressed at least one of 4 interventions: weaning age (i.e., when milk was fully removed), weaning duration (i.e., number of days from start of milk reduction to when milk was fully removed), weaning criteria (e.g., age vs. intake), or alternative weaning methods (e.g., water dilution). Outcome measures could include starter intake, growth (body weight or average daily gain), behaviors (5 specific sucking behaviors; play behavior; lying behavior; vocalizations; unrewarded visits to an automated milk feeder), and health (mortality rate, diarrhea, and respiratory illness). We conducted 3 targeted searches using Web of Science and PubMed. The articles underwent a 2-step screening process, resulting in a final sample of 44 studies. The majority of studies investigated weaning age (n = 22), followed by weaning duration (n = 13), weaning criteria (n = 9), and other weaning methods such as dilution, linear vs. step-down milk reduction, or meal-based approaches (n = 6). There was consensus for positive effects (or at least no negative effects) on overall growth of calves weaned at later ages, over longer durations, based on starter intake, or weaned using step-down or meal-based milk removal approaches. This is despite reduced starter intake in calves weaned at later ages; most studies found improved starter intake in calves weaned over longer durations. Weaning based on starter intake had superior growth and feed intakes compared with calves weaned at a fixed earlier age. Few studies assessed interactive effects of weaning method and milk allowance. However, weaning after 8 wk appears to support superior weight gain, provided pre-weaning milk allowances are adequate (above 6 L/d). Weaning can lead to hunger-related behaviors and reduced welfare, yet only half of the studies assessed the effects of weaning method on calf behavior. Weaning at later ages can reduce signs of hunger (based on unrewarded visits to the milk feeder), but it is unclear if weaning over longer durations or weaning by starter intake reduces or prolongs hunger. There was little consensus among the few studies that measured oral behaviors of calves. Positive welfare indicators, such as play behavior, were rarely measured, yet are crucial to understanding the emotional states of calves during this potentially stressful diet transition. Health was rarely the primary objective of the study, with low sample sizes to conduct statistical comparisons. Overall, there remains significant knowledge gaps in our understanding of how best to wean calves. A successful weaning program must minimize signs of hunger while promoting high growth and feed intakes, so we encourage future work to include behavioral indicators of hunger and positive welfare to evaluate how weaning methods are experienced by the calf.

The multiple benefits associated with the provision of human milk exceed individual health outcomes, engendering substantial economic, societal and environmental domains. Human milk is the absolute, unparalleled source of nutrition for infants. Informal human milk sharing is a modernistic and rapidly progressing practice. No systematic review of the factors associated with this contemporary practice among donors and recipients of informal human milk sharing exists.
AIM
The aim of this review was to identify, evaluate, synthesize and integrate the evidence on the factors associated with informal human milk sharing among donors and recipients.
METHODS
A mixed methods systematic review was conducted according to the Joanna Briggs Institute methodological guidance utilizing a convergent integrated approach. The following databases were systematically searched: CINAHL, Scopus, Medline and Embase and Web of Science between inception to August 2023. A grey literature search was conducted using multiple techniques. This review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines.
RESULTS
Twenty-four studies were included in this review. Ten integrated findings relating to the factors associated with informal human milk sharing among donors and recipients were identified. The four integrated findings pertaining to donors included: altruistic motivation and value, resistance to commercialization and overcoming inaccessibility, uniting digital and personal connectedness and lack of awareness and acceptance of informal human milk sharing in healthcare settings. The six integrated findings relating to recipients included: maternal or infant factors, superiority and advantageous impact of breastmilk, human milk bank influences, digital connections and transparency, healthcare professional facilitation of informal human milk sharing, and professional and logistical implications.
CONCLUSION
This review highlighted a multitude of factors that motivate, facilitate and impede the practice of informal human milk sharing. Future research is required to explore these factors further within broader geographical locations to enhance the generalizability and rigor of the body of knowledge. Further studies should consider the exploration of the experiences and psychological impact of informal human milk sharing on donors and recipients. The provision of human milk to all infants is an imperative public health endeavor and thus positioning this as a key benchmark for research and practice is crucial.

BACKGROUND
Dairy products and their components may impact immune function, although the current evidence base has some research gaps. As part of a larger systematic literature review of dairy products/components (including probiotics, dairy proteins, and dairy fats) and immune function, we identified the available epidemiologic research on the impact of dairy products/components on incidence and natural history of infectious diseases.
METHODS
PubMed and Embase databases were systematically searched through May 2022 to identify eligible studies using pre-defined Population, Intervention, Comparator, Outcomes, and Study design criteria. Herein, we focused on describing the impacts of dairy product/component on infectious disease outcomes, including the effect on leukocyte and cytokine response in humans. Risk of bias assessment was performed using the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Quality Criteria Checklist. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed.
RESULTS
Among 9,832 studies identified from the larger literature search, 133 relevant publications from 128 studies reported on dairy product/component and infectious disease outcomes. Few studies are available on the impact of non-fermented milk and traditional yogurt on infectious disease. Evidence was identified to suggest milk and yogurt drinks fermented with Lactobacillus strains reduce the risk and burden of common infectious diseases (CIDs), although the findings are mixed and difficult to reconcile due to heterogenous study populations, bacterial strains, and study methods. Few studies are available on the impact of dairy products/components on the natural history of infection, with the available findings indicating probiotics may both improve gastrointestinal symptoms among HIV-infected persons and help eradicate and alleviate the symptoms of Heliobacter (H.) pylori. The available evidence also suggests lactoferrin may reduce the virological burden of COVID-19 and hepatitis C virus. No consistent changes in leukocytes or cytokine production were observed for any type of dairy product or their components, but probiotics appeared to enhance natural killer cell levels/activity and the phagocytic process.
CONCLUSIONS
Dairy products, particularly those with added probiotics, may represent an easily accessible nutritional intervention to prevent and improve the course of infectious diseases. This review highlights the need for additional research in this potentially impactful area.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has taken the lives of millions and disrupted countless more worldwide. Simply living through the pandemic has had drastic effects on the health of citizens. Diet, an important aspect of health, has been uniquely affected by the pandemic, although these changes have not been sufficiently studied among youth.
OBJECTIVES
The objective of this systematic review was to investigate dietary changes of youth during COVID-19.
METHODS
A prespecified literature review was conducted using MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, and CINAHL to identify studies from January 2020 to May 2023 that assessed dietary changes among youth aged ≤20 y compared with before the pandemic. Only quantitative observational studies that were published in English were included. Two authors completed all screening/study selection independently, with disagreements being resolved via discussion. Data extraction was completed by 1 author. Dietary changes were categorized into food groups and habits for analysis purposes.
RESULTS
In total, 67 studies met inclusion criteria. Most studies used recall to assess changes (48/67; 71.6%). Most studies found an increase in fruits and vegetables (24/46; 52.2%), grain products (6/11; 54.5%), meat, poultry, and eggs (4/8, 50.0%), diet quality indices and/or overall dietary assessments (7/13, 53.8%), and the frequency of snacking (9/12; 75.0%), whereas generally finding a decrease in ultraprocessed foods (32/53; 60.4%), compared with before the COVID-19 pandemic. Mixed findings or primarily no changes were found for fish and aquatic products, legumes, beans, seeds and nuts, milk and milk products, breakfast consumption, and nutrient intake.
CONCLUSIONS
Mostly favorable dietary changes appear to have occurred among youth during COVID-19, although there were several mixed findings and unclear takeaways among the foods and habits under study. The heterogeneity of defining food groups was a noted limitation in the current review.

Burden of colorectal cancer and its risk factors in the North Africa and Middle East (NAME) region, 1990-2019: a systematic analysis of the global burden of disease study.
OBJECTIVE
The geographical differences in incidence rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) and its burden due to modifiable risk factors warrant investigating the CRC burden and its risk factors in different regions. In the current study, we aimed to estimate the burden of CRC and the share of its risk factors in the North Africa and Middle East (NAME), from 1990 to 2019.
STUDY DESIGN
Systematic review.
METHODS
The rates of incidence, prevalence, death, years of life lost (YLL), years lived with disability (YLD), and disability adjusted life years (DALYs) of CRC were estimated through the framework of the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD), Injuries and Risk Factors Study 2019 by age, sex, between 1990 and 2019. The CRC-related DALYs attributable to each lifestyle and metabolic risk factor was also estimated through a comparative risk assessment approach.
RESULTS
In NAME region, the trends of incidence, prevalence, death, YLL, YLD, and DALYs of CRC were increasing, with higher rates in males than females over this period. High and high-middle socio-demographic index (SDI) countries had greater CRC DALYs rate compared with middle- and low-SDI countries in 2019, except for Palestine [434.66 (95% UI: 368.82, 503.88)]. In NAME region, like the global, dietary risk (33.18%), low whole grain intake (19.79%), and low intake of milk (15.77%) were the major contributing risk factors to DALYs due to CRC in 2019.
CONCLUSIONS
Due to increasing trend of CRC burden and the considerable role of lifestyle and metabolic factors in its burden in NAME region, implementing fundamental strategies to minimize CRC burden and its risk factors is imperative.

INTRODUCTION
This umbrella review aimed to investigate the evidence of an effect of dietary intake of total protein, animal and plant protein on blood pressure (BP), and hypertension (PROSPERO: CRD42018082395).
METHODS
PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Database were systematically searched for systematic reviews (SRs) of prospective studies with or without meta-analysis published between 05/2007 and 10/2022. The methodological quality and outcome-specific certainty of evidence were assessed by the AMSTAR 2 and NutriGrade tools, followed by an assessment of the overall certainty of evidence. SRs investigating specific protein sources are described in this review, but not included in the assessment of the overall certainty of evidence.
RESULTS
Sixteen SRs were considered eligible for the umbrella review. Ten of the SRs investigated total protein intake, six animal protein, six plant protein and four animal vs. plant protein. The majority of the SRs reported no associations or effects of total, animal and plant protein on BP (all "possible" evidence), whereby the uncertainty regarding the effects on BP was particularly high for plant protein. Two SRs addressing milk-derived protein showed a reduction in BP; in contrast, SRs investigating soy protein found no effect on BP. The outcome-specific certainty of evidence of the SRs was mostly rated as low.
DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION
This umbrella review showed uncertainties whether there are any effects on BP from the intake of total protein, or animal or plant proteins, specifically. Based on data from two SRs with milk protein, it cannot be excluded that certain types of protein could favourably influence BP.

is an important causative organism of opportunistic fungal infection, and it is a growing medical concern due to the increasing usage of broad-spectrum antibiotics, immunosuppressant agents, and other immunocompromising conditions. Currently, bLf and antifungal drugs have been known to have synergistic effects, increasing the drug's efficacy. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of the synergistic effect of bLf and antifungal drugs. This review addressed the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. We conducted literature searches to assess the association of lactoferrin and current antifungal therapy against in ProQuest, PubMed, MEDLINE, EBSCOhost, SAGE, JSTOR, GARUDA, and Open Gray with no date restriction (until March 5, 2021). We used Jeffry's Amazing Statistical Program (JASP) to measure the overall size effect of MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) between studies. A total of 7 studies retained were experimental in vitro studies. Based on the available data, 4 out of 7 studies were included in the quantitative analysis. This systematic review showed that bovine lactoferrin could help inhibit the development of azole-susceptible and azole-resistant . Furthermore, there was synergistic activity between lactoferrin and various antifungals. Our meta-analysis showed that lactoferrin could significantly inhibit the growth than the control group. Bovine lactoferrin and its peptide derivatives isolated from bovine milk can significantly inhibit the growth of , both susceptible to azoles and those with azole resistance.

Improving the feeding efficiency of dairy cows is a key component to improve the utilization of land resources and meet the demand for high-quality protein. Advances in genomic methods and omics techniques have made it possible to breed more efficient dairy cows through genomic selection. The aim of this review is to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the biological background of feed efficiency (FE) complex traits in purebred Holstein dairy cows including heritability estimate, and genetic markers, genes, and pathways participating in FE regulation mechanism. Through a literature search, we systematically reviewed the heritability estimation, molecular genetic markers, genes, biomarkers, and pathways of traits related to feeding efficiency in Holstein dairy cows. A meta-analysis based on a random-effects model was performed to combine reported heritability estimates of FE complex. The heritability of residual feed intake, dry matter intake, and energy balance was 0.20, 0.34, and 0.22, respectively, which proved that it was reasonable to include the related traits in the selection breeding program. For molecular genetic markers, a total of 13 single-nucleotide polymorphisms and copy number variance loci, associated genes, and functions were reported to be significant across populations. A total of 169 reported candidate genes were summarized on a large scale, using a higher threshold (adjusted P value < 0.05). Then, the subsequent pathway enrichment of these genes was performed. The important genes reported in the articles were included in a gene list and the gene list was enriched by gene ontology (GO):biological process (BP), and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways analysis. Three GO:BP terms and four KEGG terms were statistically significant, which mainly focused on adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis, electron transport chain, and OXPHOS pathway. Among these pathways, involved genes such as ATP5MC2, NDUFA, COX7A2, UQCR, and MMP are particularly important as they were previously reported. Twenty-nine reported biological mechanisms along with involved genes were explained mainly by four biological pathways (insulin-like growth factor axis, lipid metabolism, oxidative phosphorylation pathways, tryptophan metabolism). The information from this study will be useful for future studies of genomic selection breeding and genetic structures influencing animal FE. A better understanding of the underlying biological mechanisms would be beneficial, particularly as it might address genetic antagonism.

A systematic literature review of in vitro studies was performed to identify methane (CH) mitigation interventions with a potential to reduce CH emission in vivo. Data from 277 peer-reviewed studies published between 1979 and 2018 were reviewed. Individual CH mitigation interventions were classified into 14 categories of feed additives based on their type, chemical composition, and mode of action. Response variables evaluated were absolute CH emission (number of treatment means comparisons = 1,325); total volatile fatty acids (n = 1,007), acetate (n = 783), propionate (n = 792), and butyrate (n = 776) concentrations; acetate to propionate ratio (n = 675); digestibility of dry matter (n = 489), organic matter (n = 277), and neutral detergent fiber (n = 177). Total gas production was used as an explanatory variable in the model for CH production. Relative mean difference between treatment and control means reported in the studies was calculated and used for statistical analysis. The robust variance estimation method was used to analyze the effects of CH mitigation interventions. In vitro CH production was decreased by antibodies (-38.9%), chemical inhibitors (-29.2%), electron sinks (-18.9%), essential oils (-18.2%), plant extracts (-14.5%), plant inclusion (-11.7%), saponins (-14.8%), and tannins (-14.5%). Overall effects of direct-fed microbials, enzymes, macroalgae, and organic acids supplementation did not affect CH production in the current meta-analysis. When considering the effects of individual mitigation interventions containing a minimum number of 4 degrees of freedom within feed additives categories, Enterococcus spp. (i.e., direct-fed microbial), nitrophenol (i.e., electron sink), and Leucaena spp. (i.e., tannins) decreased CH production by 20.3%, 27.1%, and 23.5%, respectively, without extensively, or only slightly, affecting ruminal fermentation and digestibility of nutrients. It should be noted, however, that although the total number of publications (n = 277) and treatment means comparisons (n = 1,325 for CH production) in the current analysis were high, data for most mitigation interventions were obtained from less than 5 observations (e.g., maximum number of observations was 4, 7, and 22 for nitrophenol, Enterococcus spp., and Leucaena spp., respectively), because of limited data available in the literature. These should be further evaluated in vitro and in vivo to determine their true potential to decrease enteric CH production, yield, and intensity. Some mitigation interventions (e.g., magnesium, Heracleum spp., nitroglycerin, β-cyclodextrin, Leptospermum pattersoni, Fructulus Ligustri, Salix caprea, and Sesbania grandiflora) decreased in vitro CH production by over 50% but did not have enough observations in the database. These should be more extensively investigated in vitro, and the dose effect must be considered before adoption of mitigation interventions in vivo.
