BACKGROUND
Posttraumatic wrist osteoarthritis is an irreversible and often progressive condition. Many surgical treatments, used in (daily) practice, aim to relieve symptoms like pain and restore function. The aim of this systematic review is to assess the patient reported and functional outcomes of the most common surgical interventions in patients with posttraumatic wrist osteoarthritis. This overview can help clinicians select the best treatment and manage patient's expectations.
METHODS
A literature search was performed in Pubmed, Embase and Cochrane for articles published between 1990 and November 2022 according to the PRISMA guidelines. The study protocol has been registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42017080427). Studies that describe patient reported outcomes (pain and Disability of Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) -score) and functional outcomes (range of motion (ROM) and grip strength) after surgical intervention with a minimal follow-up of 1 year were included. The identified surgical procedures included denervation, proximal row carpectomy, interpositional- and total arthroplasty, and midcarpal-, radiocarpal- and total arthrodesis. The pre-and postoperative outcomes were pooled and presented per salvage procedure.
RESULTS
Data from 50 studies was included. Pain score improved after all surgeries except denervation. Flexion/extension decreased after radiocarpal arthrodesis, did not show significant changes after proximal row carpectomy, and improved for all other surgeries. DASH score improved after arthroplasty, proximal row carpectomy and midcarpal arthrodesis. Grip strength improved after interposition arthroplasty and partial arthrodesis.
CONCLUSION
Evidence from this review did not support the indication for denervation in this particular patient population. In patients with SLAC/SNAC II, proximal row carpectomy might be favourable to a midcarpal arthrodesis solely based on better FE ROM of the radiocarpal joint after proximal row carpectomy. In terms of radiocarpal mobility, total wrist arthroplasty might be preferred to radiocarpal arthrodesis in patients with osteoarthritis after a distal radius fracture. More uniform measurements of outcomes would improve the understanding of the effect of surgical treatments of the posttraumatic osteoarthritic wrist.

BACKGROUND
Adopting a physically active lifestyle is advocated as a strategy to prevent loss of physical independence and support healthy aging. This study aimed to evaluate the physical independence and related factors among older adults.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted through electronic databases such as Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Iranmedex, and Scientific Information Database from the earliest to 1 April 2022. Two researchers independently extracted information from the studies and evaluated the quality of the studies. The analysis was conducted using CMA program version 3, and each study's importance was determined based on its inverse variance.
RESULTS
Five thousand seven hundred thirty-three older adults participated in this review in six studies. All evaluated studies had high quality. The mean score of physical independence in older adults was 20.07 (SE=0.76) out of 24 (95% CI: 18.58-21.56; =98.573%; <0.001). Physical activity is very important for physical independence and reduces the risk of physical dependence in older adults. Other factors, such as sex, BMI, age, abnormal performance, timed performance, sufficiently active, muscle function, handgrip strength, lower extremity function, lower body strength, maximal isometric knee extension power, lung function, aerobic endurance, sedentary time, agility, and the prevalence of arthritis, had a significant relationship with physical independence in older adults.
CONCLUSION
Older adults demonstrate favourable levels of physical independence. Notably, physical activity emerges as a significant determinant positively associated with such independence. Thus, policymakers and administrators are encouraged to strategize the creation of conducive environments for walking and exercise among older adults.

BACKGROUND
Biomechanical alterations in patients with low back pain (LBP), as reduced range of motion or strength, do not appear to be exclusively related to the trunk. Thus, studies have investigated biomechanical changes in the hip, due to the proximity of this joint to the low back region. However, the relationship between hip biomechanical changes in patients with LBP is still controversial and needs to be summarized. Therefore, the aim of this study was to systematically review observational studies that used biomechanical assessments in patients with non-specific LBP.
METHODS
The search for observational studies that evaluated hip biomechanical variables (i.e., range of motion, kinematic, strength, and electromyography) in adults with non-specific acute, subacute, and chronic LBP was performed in the PubMed, Embase, Cinahl and Sportdiscus databases on February 22, 2024. Four blocks of descriptors were used: 1) type of study, 2) LBP, 3) hip and 4) biomechanical assessment. Two independent assessors selected eligible studies and extracted the following data: author, year of publication, country, study objective, participant characteristics, outcomes, and results. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the Epidemiological Appraisal Instrument and classified as low, moderate, and high. Due to the heterogeneity of the biomechanical assessment and, consequently, of the results among eligible studies, a descriptive analysis was performed.
RESULTS
The search strategy returned 338 articles of which 54 were included: nine articles evaluating range of motion, 16 evaluating kinematic, four strength, seven electromyography and 18 evaluating more than one outcome. The studies presented moderate and high methodological quality. Patients with LBP, regardless of symptoms, showed a significant reduction in hip range of motion, especially hip internal rotation, reduction in the time to perform functional activities such as sit-to-stance-to-sit, sit-to-stand or walking, greater activation of the hamstrings and gluteus maximus muscles and weakness of the hip abductor and extensor muscles during specific tests and functional activities compared to healthy individuals.
CONCLUSION
Patients with LBP present changes in range of motion, task execution, activation, and hip muscle strength when compared to healthy individuals. Therefore, clinicians must pay greater attention to the assessment and management of the hip during the treatment of these patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES
Sarcopenia has garnered extensive attention in clinical practice since its high prevalence and significant impact on clinical outcomes. Multiple organizations have published guidance documents on sarcopenia, offering evidence-based recommendations for clinical practice and/or research. We aimed to appraise the methodological quality of the included documents and synthesize available recommendations for the screening, diagnosis, and intervention of sarcopenia.
METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN
We conducted a search on PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, guideline database, and guideline organizations and professional societies websites for clinical practices, consensus statements and position papers in terms of sarcopenia, muscle atrophy or muscle loss published before April 17, 2023. The AGREE II instrument was used by three independent reviewers to assess the methodological quality of these documents.
RESULTS
Thirty-six guidance documents published between 2010 and 2023 were included. Seven documents fulfilled ≥ 50% of all the AGREE II domains. Seven underwent a Delphi process and six graded the strength of the recommendations. The process of screening (n=21), early diagnosis of sarcopenia (n=12), diagnosis of sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia (n=10), and management (n=21) were increasingly recommended. SARC-F (n=14) was the most recommended screening tool, and the assessment of muscle function was considered the first step in diagnosing sarcopenia. The management strategy for both age-related and disease-related sarcopenia mainly focused on exercise and nutrition intervention.
CONCLUSIONS
The guidance documents have provided referential recommendations that have great guiding significance. But the inconsistency in recommendations and variation in methodological rigour suggests that high-quality evidence is lacking yet.

Evidence suggests that functional training (FT) positively impacts physical fitness and sports performance. However, a systematic review addressing the effects of FT on basketball players remains absent. This systematic review aims to explore the influence of FT on physical fitness and skill-related performance in basketball players. We searched six databases: Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), EBSCOhost, and Google Scholar. The search utilized a combination of keywords related to FT, physical fitness, and basketball. The Eligibility Criteria of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA 2020) guidelines were followed in this systematic review. 11 studies were ultimately included in this review, collectively recruiting 333 basketball players. These studies demonstrated that FT significantly improved muscle strength, linear speed, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, balance, and muscular endurance. However, the effects of FT on power, change-of-direction speed, and basketball-related performance were inconsistent. Most studies showed FT significantly improves these three variables, but a small number of studies did not find positive effects of FT using specific tests including standing long jump, Sargent jump, touch high, lane agility, lateral shuffle, dribbling line drill, and free-throw tests. FT is an effective training method for enhancing physical fitness including muscle strength, linear speed, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, balance, and muscular endurance. However, the effects of FT on power, change-of-direction speed, and basketball-related performance were divergent. Some tests were not improved after FT potentially due to the short program lengths and training session durations, varied athletic levels of players examined, and different foci of the FT exercises administered. The collective evidence suggests FT programs, especially the specific exercises prescribed, should be tailored to the desired training objectives. More studies investigating the effects of FT on physical fitness and basketball-related performance with established tests are encouraged in the future to expand the current evidence base. https://inplasy.com/, Identifier INPLASY202360072.

International guidelines recommend a target protein intake of ≥1.2 g/kg/day to all critically ill patients for optimal outcomes. There are however various conflicting data related to this recommendation. The primary objective of this review was to compare a protein intake group (≥1.2 g/kg/day) with a lower protein intake group (<1.2 g/kg/day) in critically ill adult patients on mortality, length of intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital stay. Secondly, the effect of protein intake on length of mechanical ventilation, adverse nutrition-related events and muscle mass and strength parameters were investigated. Sixteen randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of adult patients admitted to an intensive or high care unit and receiving nutrition support in the form of enteral- and/or parenteral nutrition were selected against prespecified eligibility criteria. Two independent reviewers extracted relevant data and assessed the risk of bias of the included studies. Review Manager 5.4.1 was used to analyse data and GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations) was used to evaluate the certainty of the evidence. The higher protein group, when compared to the lower protein group, probably results in little to no difference in mortality (risk ratio [RR] 1.01; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.89 to 1.14; moderate-certainty evidence); with a probable slight increase in length of ICU stay (mean difference [MD] 0.33; 95% CI -0.57 to 1.23; moderate-certainty) and length of hospital stay (MD 1.72; 95% CI -0.58 to 4.01; moderate-certainty evidence), on average. For secondary outcomes, it was found that the higher protein group probably does not reduce the length of mechanical ventilation (MD 0.08; 95% CI -0.38 to 0.53; moderate-certainty evidence). Higher protein group probably reduces the occurrence of diarrhoea and high gastric residual volume and may reduce the occurrence of constipation. It may also increase nitrogen balance (MD 3.66; 95% CI 1.81 to 5.51; low-certainty evidence). Importantly, there does not seem to be harm associated with the higher protein group, though it should be mentioned that for many of the adverse events in this study, the certainty of evidence was low or very low.

BACKGROUND & AIMS
The aim of this study was to investigate the omega-3 fatty acids supplementation, and resistance training on muscle strength and mass.
METHODS
A review was conducted by searching relevant randomized controlled trials investigating the effects of omega-3 fatty acids supplementation and resistance training on skeletal muscle strength and mass. Three experts independently performed a thorough examination of the literature database and conducted the systematic review and meta-analysis.
RESULTS
Four studies were ultimately included in the systematic review after screening. The results of the meta-analysis revealed that the supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids and resistance training significantly improved muscle strength compared to the placebo-controlled group. However, no significant effects were observed in the effect for muscle mass.
CONCLUSIONS
The interventions of omega-3 fatty acids supplementation and resistance training show promise as a countermeasure against muscular dysfunction. While further research is warranted to investigate its effects on skeletal muscle mass, the findings of this study hold implications for maintaining and/or improving the quality of life to elderly people.

Potential Moderators of the Effects of Blood Flow Restriction Training on Muscle Strength and Hypertrophy: A Meta-analysis Based on a Comparison with High-Load Resistance Training.
BACKGROUND
While it has been examined whether there are similar magnitudes of muscle strength and hypertrophy adaptations between low-load resistance training combined with blood-flow restriction training (BFR-RT) and high-load resistance training (HL-RT), some important potential moderators (e.g., age, sex, upper and lower limbs, frequency and duration etc.) have yet to be analyzed further. Furthermore, training status, specificity of muscle strength tests (dynamic versus isometric or isokinetic) and specificity of muscle mass assessments (locations of muscle hypertrophy assessments) seem to exhibit different effects on the results of the analysis. The role of these influencing factors, therefore, remains to be elucidated.
OBJECTIVES
The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare the effects of BFR- versus HL-RT on muscle adaptations, when considering the influence of population characteristics (training status, sex and age), protocol characteristics (upper or lower limbs, duration and frequency) and test specificity.
METHODS
Studies were identified through database searches based on the following inclusion criteria: (1) pre- and post-training assessment of muscular strength; (2) pre- and post-training assessment of muscular hypertrophy; (3) comparison of BFR-RT vs. HL-RT; (4) score ≥ 4 on PEDro scale; (5) means and standard deviations (or standard errors) are reported or allow estimation from graphs. In cases where the fifth criterion was not met, the data were requested directly from the authors.
RESULTS
The main finding of the present study was that training status was an important influencing factor in the effects of BFR-RT. The trained individuals may gain greater muscle strength and hypertrophy with BFR-RT as compared to HL-RT. However, the results showed that the untrained individuals experienced similar muscle mass gains and superior muscle strength gains in with HL-RT compared to BFR-RT.
CONCLUSION
Compared to HL-RT, training status is an important factor influencing the effects of the BFR-RT, in which trained can obtain greater muscle strength and hypertrophy gains in BFR-RT, while untrained individuals can obtain greater strength gains and similar hypertrophy in HL-RT.

Efficacy of non-pharmacological interventions for individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomized control trials.
This network meta-analysis (NMA) aimed to compare the efficacy of five non-pharmacological interventions, including exercise intervention (EI), nutritional intervention (NI), respiratory intervention (RI), psychological intervention (PSI), and integrated physical intervention (IPI), on functional status, quality of life, muscle strength, pulmonary function, and safety in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We searched nine databases, PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, CNKI, CBM, WFPD, and CSTJ, for randomized controlled trials of ALS patients. The primary outcome was the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale-Revised (ALSFRS-R) score. Secondary outcomes were the McGill Quality of Life Questionnaire (McGill-QoL), Medical Research Council (MRC)-sum score, Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), and Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) score. This NMA was conducted using random-effect models to calculate the standard mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). All types of supplemental interventions had some benefit for patients with ALS. EI had a beneficial effect on the ALSFRS-R score (SMD: 1.01; 95% CI 0.50-1.51), FVC (SMD: 0.78; 95% CI 0.02-1.55), McGill-QoL (SMD: 0.71 95% CI 0.33-1.08), and MRC (SMD: 1.11; 95% CI 0.08-2.14). RI had a beneficial effect on the ALSFRS-R score (SMD: 0.83 95% CI 0.12-1.55). IPI had a beneficial effect on the ALSFRS-R score (SMD: 0.65 95% CI 0.06-1.24). NI had a beneficial effect on the McGill-QoL (SMD: 0.63 95% CI 0.02-1.23). The current study findings support a multimodal intervention strategy with an emphasis on EI for slowing disease progression in patients with ALS.

PURPOSE
Exercise-based cancer rehabilitation via digital technologies can provide a promising alternative to centre-based exercise training, but data for cancer patients and survivors are limited. We conducted a meta-analysis examining the effect of telehealth exercise-based cancer rehabilitation in cancer survivors on cardiorespiratory fitness, physical activity, muscle strength, health-related quality of life, and self-reported symptoms.
METHODS
PubMed, Web of Science, and reference lists of articles related to the aim were searched up to March 2023. Randomized controlled clinical trials were included comparing the effect of telehealth exercise-based cancer rehabilitation with guideline-based usual care in adult cancer survivors. The primary result was cardiorespiratory fitness expressed by peak oxygen consumption.
RESULTS
A total of 1510 participants were identified, and ten randomized controlled trials (n = 855) were included in the meta-analysis. The study sample was 85% female, and the mean age was 52.7 years. Meta-analysis indicated that telehealth exercise-based cancer rehabilitation significantly improved cardiorespiratory fitness (SMD = 0.34, 95% CI 0.20, 0.49, I2 = 42%, p < 0.001) and physical activity (SMD = 0.34, 95% CI, 0.17, 0.51, I2 = 71%, p < 0.001). It was uncertain whether telehealth exercise-based cancer rehabilitation, compared with guideline-based usual care, improved the quality of life (SMD = 0.23, 95%CI, -0.07, 0.52, I2 = 67%, p = 0.14) body mass index (MD = 0.46, 95% CI, -1.19, 2.12, I2 = 60%, p = 0.58) and muscle strength (SMD = 0.07, 95% CI, -0.14, 0.28, I2 = 37%, p = 0.51).
CONCLUSION
This meta-analysis showed that telehealth exercise cancer rehabilitation could significantly increase cardiorespiratory fitness and physical activity levels and decrease fatigue. It is uncertain whether these interventions improve quality of life and muscle strength. High-quality and robust studies are needed to investigate specific home-based exercise regimens in different cancer subgroups to increase the certainty of the evidence.
