BACKGROUND
Conservative therapy is currently the elective treatment for peripheric facial palsy according to scientific literature. The success of conservative therapy is due to physiotherapy and the application of its methods. The aim of this systematic review was to assess mirror therapy, a physiotherapeutic method.
OBJECTIVES
The aim of the following systematic review is to evaluate the effectiveness of using mirror therapy in patients with peripheral paralysis of the seventh cranial nerve.
METHODS
This systematic review was conducted according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The screening of literature was carried out on Cochrane, PEDro, PubMed/Medline, Scopus and Web of Science databases up until August 2022. All studies were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 5 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in this study. The risk of bias was evaluated with PEDro and Jadad scales.
DISCUSSION
In the present study, we reviewed 5 RCTs that compared mirror therapy with other physiotherapy treatments or placebo to reduce pain, depression and improve range of motion in patients with peripheric facial nerve palsy.
CONCLUSIONS
Further studies are needed to determine the effectiveness of this type of treatment, but nevertheless the data obtained are very encouraging.

PURPOSE
Surgical reconstruction of elbow extension can help restore function in patients with tetraplegia and triceps paralysis because of spinal cord injury. Both posterior deltoid-to-triceps tendon transfer and transfer of the branch of the axillary nerve to the triceps motor branch of the radial nerve have been described for triceps reanimation. This systematic review aimed at reviewing current evidence in the two schools of surgery in terms of their outcome and complication profile.
METHODS
A systematic review was conducted using MEDLINE (1974-2023) and EMBASE (1946-2023) databases. The keyword terms "elbow extension," "triceps," "deltoid," "nerve transfer," "spinal cord injury," "tetraplegia," "quadriplegia," and "tetraplegic" were used in the initial search, which was supplemented with manual searches of the bibliographies of retrieved articles.
RESULTS
Twenty studies met our inclusion criteria, with 14 studies (229 limbs) on posterior deltoid-to-triceps tendon transfer, 5 studies (23 limbs) on axillary to radial nerve transfer, and 1 study (1 limb) on combined transfer. For the tendon transfer group, the majority of studies reported a median triceps power of grade 3, with a wide range of failure percentage to reach antigravity (0% to 87.5%). Common complications included gradual stretching of the musculotendinous unit, rupture of the tendon transferred, elbow contracture, and infection. For the nerve transfer group, the majority of studies also reported a median triceps power reaching grade 3. There were no reported complications or loss of power in donor action of shoulder abduction or external rotation.
CONCLUSIONS
Transfer of the axillary nerve branch to the triceps motor branch of the radial nerve in tetraplegia shows promising results, with comparable triceps muscle power compared to traditional tendon transfer and a low incidence of complication.

BACKGROUND
Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neurotoxicity (CIPN) is a dose-limiting side effect observed in breast cancer patients. Its primary clinical manifestations include limb numbness, tingling sensations, hypoesthesia, or paresthesia. In severe instances, some patients may also encounter muscle cramps, weakness, and pain, leading to potential paralysis. The onset of CIPN significantly impacts the quality of life for cancer patients. Hence, it is imperative to explore preventive strategies for managing CIPN.
METHODS
We searched for relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-randomized controlled trials (non-RCTs) in several databases. The primary outcome measures encompassed the Patient Neurotoxicity Questionnaire (PNQ), the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Taxane (FACT-Taxane), and the National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (NCI-CTCAE). Secondary outcomes aimed to evaluate the quality of life and the tolerability of ice gloves. Meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.3 software to determine the relative risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI).
RESULTS
We conducted an analysis involving 372 patients across seven trials. In our meta-analysis, the use of ice gloves demonstrated non-significant results in reducing the incidence of both motor and sensory neuropathy, as assessed through CTCAE (sensory: RR: 0.94; 95% CI: 0.85 to 1.02; P = 0.15; motor: RR: 1.04; 95% CI: 0.88 to 1.22; P = 0.64). Similarly, when evaluated using the PNQ, there was no significant reduction observed in the incidence of sensory and motor neuropathy (sensory: RR: 0.49; 95% CI: 0.20 to 1.20; P = 0.12; motor: RR: 0.71; 95% CI: 0.26 to 1.99; P = 0.52). Consistently, our conclusions remained unchanged when employing the FACT-Taxane assessment. Regarding the evaluation of the quality of life, our observations suggested a potential improvement with the use of ice gloves, and participants exhibited moderate tolerance towards them.
CONCLUSION
Ice gloves are a reasonable option for the treatment of CIPN in patients undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. However, the effectiveness of ice gloves in combating CIPN remains inconclusive at this time due to the low quality and limited number of clinical trials on this topic.

Comparing the prevalence and association between anxiety, depression and gastrointestinal symptoms in gastroparesis versus functional dyspepsia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
OBJECTIVE
To determine the prevalence and associations between anxiety/depression, and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms across gastroparesis and functional dyspepsia.
METHODS
Twenty adult studies were identified through systematic searches of three databases (PubMed, CINAHL and PsycINFO) in September 2023. Meta-analysis was performed to estimate the pooled prevalence rates of anxiety and depression across gastroparesis and functional dyspepsia, and to determine whether the associations of anxiety/depression and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms differ in gastroparesis versus functional dyspepsia.
RESULTS
The overall pooled prevalence rate for anxiety was similar (χ(1) = 2.45, p = .12) in gastroparesis (49%) and functional dyspepsia (29%). The overall pooled prevalence rate for depression in gastroparesis (39%), and functional dyspepsia (32%) was also similar (χ(1) = 0.81, p = .37). No significant relationship between anxiety and GI symptoms (r = 0.11) or depression and GI symptoms (r = 0.16) was found in gastroparesis, whilst significant, though weak, positive relationships between anxiety and GI symptoms (r = 0.30) and depression and GI symptoms (r = 0.32) were found in functional dyspepsia. The association between GI symptoms and anxiety, but not depression, across gastroparesis and functional dyspepsia was found to be significant (χ(1) = 5.22, p = .02).
CONCLUSION
Contributing to ongoing debate as to whether gastroparesis and functional dyspepsia are interchangeable syndromes, this review found that anxiety and depression prevalence was similar in both conditions. Psychological assessment and the utilisation of effective and holistic care in both conditions is therefore warranted.

To analyze the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of unexplained conductive hearing loss (UCHL) with intact tympanic membrane. A systematic review was conducted based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A total of 642 articles were retrieved from databases such as PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane. Fifty-four research articles and 21 case reports were screened out according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria for analysis of the etiology of UCHL. Seven research articles with UCHL who underwent exploratory tympanotomy were selected for data extraction and analysis of clinical characteristics. UCHL is a common manifestation of various diseases, including congenital ossicular anomalies (COA), otosclerosis (OTS), congenital middle ear cholesteatoma (CMEC), oval window atresia, superior semicircular-canal dehiscence, congenital stapedial footplate fixation, middle ear osteoma or adenoma, congenital ossification of stapedial tendon, and so on. A total of 522 patients were included in the 7 articles; among whom OTS showed a tendency to increase with age. The main symptoms were hearing loss, followed by tinnitus, dizziness, ear fullness, ear pain, facial paralysis. A total of 87.5% to 93.0% patients with COA manifested as nonprogressive deafness that occurred since childhood, with tinnitus incidence of 15.6% to 30.2%, and 86.4% to 96.4% patients with OTS presented with progressive hearing loss, with tinnitus incidence of 60.1% to 90.9%. The diagnosis positive rate of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) was 33.8% to 87.1%, and CMEC was higher than that of COA (83.3%-100% vs 28.6%-64%). All the articles reported good hearing recovery. The most common surgical complications included taste abnormalities, tinnitus, and dizziness. UCHL presents with similar clinical manifestations and poses challenges in preoperative diagnosis. Exploratory tympanotomy is the primary method for diagnosis and treatment, with good prognosis after removing the lesion and reconstructing hearing during the operation. Children can also safely undergo the surgery.

BACKGROUND
Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a nervous system disease leading to motor and sensory dysfunction below the injury level, and can result in paralysis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a key role in SCI treatment, and related research provides insights for SCI diagnosis and treatment. Bibliometrics is an important tool for literature statistics and evaluation, objectively summarizing multidimensional information. This study comprehensively overviews the field through bibliometric analysis of miRNA and SCI research, providing contemporary resources for future collaboration and clinical treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
In this study, we searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) database. After careful screening and data import, we extracted annual publications, citation counts, countries, institutions, authors, journals, highly cited articles, co-cited articles, keywords, and H-index. Bibliometrics and visualization analyses employed VOSviewer, CiteSpace, the R package "bibliometrix," and online analytic platforms. Using Arrowsmith, we determined miRNA-SCI relationships and discussed potential miRNA mechanisms in SCI.
RESULTS
From 2008 to 2024, the number of related papers increased annually, reaching 754. The number of yearly publications remained high and entered a period of rapid development. Researchers from 50 countries/regions, 802 institutions, 278 journals, and 3,867 authors participated in the field. Currently, China has advantages in the number of national papers, citations, institutions, and authors. However, it is necessary to strengthen cooperation among different authors, institutions, and countries to promote the production of important academic achievements. The research in the field currently focuses on nerve injury, apoptosis, and gene expression. Future research directions mainly involve molecular mechanisms, clinical trials, exosomes, and inflammatory reactions.
CONCLUSION
Overall, this study comprehensively analyzes the research status and frontier of miRNAs in SCI. A systematic summary provides a complete and intuitive understanding of the relationship between SCI and miRNAs. The presented findings establish a basis for future research and clinical application in this field.

BACKGROUND
Current literature extensively covers the use of sphenopalatine ganglion stimulation (SPGs) in treating a broad spectrum of medical conditions, such as allergic rhinitis, cluster headaches, and strokes. Nevertheless, a discernible gap in the systematic organization and analysis of these studies is evident. This paper aims to bridge this gap by conducting a comprehensive review and analysis of existing literature on SPGs across various medical conditions.
METHODS
This study meticulously constructed a comprehensive database through systematic computerized searches conducted on PubMed, Embase, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, and CBM up to May 2022. The inclusion criteria encompassed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in either Chinese or English, focusing on the therapeutic applications of SPGs for various medical conditions. Both qualitative and quantitative outcome indicators were considered eligible for inclusion.
RESULTS
This comprehensive study reviewed 36 publications, comprising 10 high-quality, 23 medium-quality, and three low-quality articles. The study investigated various diseases, including allergic rhinitis (AR), ischemic strokes (IS), cluster headache (CH), primary trigeminal neuralgia (PTN), pediatric chronic secretory otitis (PCSO), refractory facial paralysis (RFP), chronic tension-type headache (CTTH), as well as the analysis of low-frequency sphenopalatine ganglion stimulation (LF-SPGs) in chronic cluster headache (CCH) and the impact of SPGs on Normal nasal cavity function (NNCF). SPGs demonstrate efficacy in the treatment of AR. Regarding the improvement of rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire (RQLQ) scores, SPGs are considered the optimal intervention according to the SUCRA ranking. Concerning the improvement in Total Nasal Symptom Score (TNSS), Conventional Acupuncture Combined with Tradiational Chinese Medicine (CA-TCM) holds a significant advantage in the SUCRA ranking and is deemed the best intervention. In terms of increasing Effective Rate (ER), SPGs outperformed both conventional acupuncture (CA) and Western Medicine (WM; < 0.05). In the context of SPGs treatment for IS, the results indicate a significant improvement in the 3-month outcomes, as evaluated by the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) in the context of Cerebral Cortical Infarction (CCI; < 0.05). In the treatment of CH with SPGs, the treatment has been shown to have a statistically significant effect on the relief and disappearance of headaches ( < 0.05). The impact of SPGs on NNCF reveals statistically significant improvements ( < 0.05) in nasal airway resistance (NAR), nasal cavity volume (NCV), exhaled nitric oxide (eNO), substance P (SP), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and neuropeptide Y (NPY). SPGs treatments for PCSO, RFP, and CTTH, when compared to control groups, yielded statistically significant results ( < 0.05).
CONCLUSION
SPGs demonstrate significant effectiveness in the treatment of AR, IS, and CH. Effective management of CCH may require addressing both autonomic dysregulation and deeper neural pathways. However, additional high-quality research is essential to clarify its effects on NNCF, PTN, PCSO, RFP, and CTTH.

The facial nerve plays a crucial role in facial expression and sensory functions, with irreversible injuries often demanding rehabilitation therapies, with hypoglossal-facial nerve anastomosis (HFA) being one of the treatment options. This systematic review assessed different HFA techniques for facial paralysis, particularly post vestibular schwannoma resection, focusing on effectiveness and associated morbidities. Fifteen studies, comprising a case series and a retrospective cohort, were analyzed. Techniques included end-to-end, split, side-to-side, end-to-side, and jump interpositional graft hypoglossal-facial anastomosis (JIGHFA). Positive outcomes were observed with end-to-end and side-to-side techniques, while the split technique and JIGHFA showed promise. Comparative analyses favored the 'end-to-side' approach. Shorter intervals between surgery and HFA correlated with improved outcomes. Methodological variations highlight the need for prospective studies with standardized methodologies for robust evidence and informed decision-making on optimal HFA techniques.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare and debilitating autoimmune disorder that affects the peripheral nervous system. Although the exact etiology of GBS is still unknown, it is thought to be triggered by a preceding gastrointestinal infection in most of the cases. Clinical manifestations include limb weakness, areflexia, and sensory loss that can further progress to neuromuscular paralysis affecting the respiratory, facial, and bulbar functions. Both plasmapheresis (PE) and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) have shown effectiveness in the treatment of GBS, but it is still unclear which treatment approach is superior in terms of therapeutic efficacy. This systematic review acts per Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. For appropriate studies and research, we searched PubMed, PubMed Central (PMC), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Science Direct, and Google Scholar. Screening of articles was performed based on relevance and inclusion and exclusion criteria. To check for bias, we used relevant quality appraisal tools. Initially, we found 2454 articles. After removing duplicates and irrelevant papers, we finalized 31 studies based on titles, abstracts, and reading entire articles. We excluded 14 studies because of poor quality; the remaining 17 papers were included in this review. IVIG is equally efficacious as PE in improving primary outcomes and secondary outcomes. IVIG showed a slight advantage over PE in reducing the need for mechanical ventilation (MV) and hospital stay duration. However, in children, PE demonstrated a slight edge in improving secondary outcomes. PE was associated with a slightly higher risk of adverse events and post-treatment worsening symptoms compared to IVIG. IVIG is considered more user-friendly with a significantly lower patient discontinuation rate than PE. IVIG treatment was found to be significantly more expensive than PE.

BACKGROUND
Robot-assisted upper-limb rehabilitation has been studied for many years, with many randomised controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the effects of robotic-assisted training on affected limbs. The current trend directs towards end-effector devices. However, most studies have focused on the effectiveness of rehabilitation devices, but studies on device sizes are relatively few.
GOAL
Systematically review the effect of a portable rehabilitation robot (PRR) on the rehabilitation effectiveness of paralysed upper limbs compared with non-robotic therapy.
METHODS
A meta-analysis was conducted on literature that included the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) obtained from the PubMed and Web of Science (WoS) electronic databases until June 2023.
RESULTS
A total of 9 studies, which included RCTs, were completed and a meta-analysis was conducted on 8 of them. The analysis involved 295 patients. The influence on upper-limb function before and after treatment in a clinical environment is analysed by comparing the experimental group using the portable upper-limb rehabilitation robot with the control group using conventional therapy. The result shows that portable robots prove to be effective (FMA: SMD = 0.696, 95% = 0.099 to.293, < 0.05).
DISCUSSION
Both robot-assisted and conventional rehabilitation effects are comparable. In some studies, PRR performs better than conventional rehabilitation, but conventional treatments are still irreplaceable. Smaller size with better portability has its advantages, and portable upper-limb rehabilitation robots are feasible in clinical rehabilitation.
CONCLUSION
Although portable upper-limb rehabilitation robots are clinically beneficial, few studies have focused on portability. Further research should focus on modular design so that rehabilitation robots can be decomposed, which benefits remote rehabilitation and household applications.
