Hormonal contraception has been widely prescribed for decades. Although safety and efficacy are well-established, much uncertainty remains regarding brain effects of hormonal contraception. We systematically review human and animal studies on the brain effects of hormonal contraception which employed neuroimaging techniques such as MRI, PET and EEG, as well as animal studies which reported on neurotransmitter and other brain biochemical effects. We screened 1001 articles and ultimately extracted data from 70, comprising 51 human and 19 animal studies. Of note, there were no animal studies which employed structural or functional MRI, MRS or PET. In summary, our review shows hormonal contraceptive associations with changes in the brain have been documented. Many questions remain and more studies are needed to describe the effects of hormonal contraception on the brain.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW
Appropriate use of opioid analgesics is a key concern within the field of pain medicine. Several methods exist to discourage abuse and facilitate effective treatment regimens. Pill counting is often cited as one such method and frequently employed in varying fashions within clinical practice. However, to date, there is no published review of the evidence to support this practice. This was a comprehensive review of the available literature that was conducted with analysis of the efficacy and practical application of pill counting during treatment of chronic pain conditions.
RECENT FINDINGS
There is paucity in data regarding pill count importance in pain management. Pill count is a very important tool to monitor compliance of opioids use which in turn can prevent several complications associated with opioid misuse. Pill counting may be used in conjunction with other abuse deterrents, although increased support for this practice requires standardized methods of pill counting and further analysis of its effectiveness.

Patients with stable coronary artery disease (SCAD) still have a higher risk of adverse cardiovascular events. Shexiang Baoxin Pill (SBP) is widely used as a complementary and alternative treatment for SCAD. This study aimed to further verify the therapeutic effect and safety of SBP on SCAD. Seven databases were involved in this meta-analysis as of 1 June 2022. Data was collected from all the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of the combination of SBP and conventional western medicine (CWM) in treating SCAD which was conducted by two independent authors. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias 2.0 (RoB2.0) tool, and the meta-analysis was accomplished with Review Manager 5.3. Furthermore, the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) profiler 3.2.2 software was selected to grade the current evidence in our findings. 42 articles, involving 6,694 patients were screened among all the 1,374 records in the analysis. The results demonstrated that the combination therapy was more efficient than CWM alone in lowering the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE, RR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.37 to 0.68, < 0.00001) and ameliorating the total effective rate of angina symptom improvement (RR = 1.23, 95% CI: 1.19 to 1.28, < 0.00001), the effective rate of electrocardiogram improvement (RR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.26 to 1.43, < 0.00001), the frequency of angina pectoris (MD = -2.83, 95% CI: -3.62 to -2.05, < 0.00001), and the duration of angina pectoris (MD = -1.32, 95% CI: -2.04 to -0.61, = 0.0003). We also found that, after SBP treatment, a more positive blood lipid level and left ventricular ejection fraction without the increase in adverse cases were calculated in our meta-analysis. What's more, Subgroup analysis indicated that treatment duration may be the source of heterogeneity. The certainty of the evidence for MACE, and electrocardiogram improvement exhibited moderate certainty, and the certainty of the evidence for the remaining outcomes was judged as low certainty. The trial sequential analysis further affirmed the clinical efficacy of SBP. The available evidence indicates that SBP may be an effective therapeutic option in patients with SCAD. Breast cancer is divided into four molecular subtypes. Each one has distinct clinical features. The aim of this study was to assess individual breast cancer subtype risk in premenopausal women taking oral contraceptives (OCs). Databases (MEDLINE; PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library) were searched to January 2022 to identify case-control studies meeting the inclusion criteria. The influence of OCs intake on the risk of ER-positive breast cancer (ER+BC) was revealed to be non-significant with regard to reduction: OR = 0.9134, 95% CI: 0.8128 to 1.0265, = 0.128. Assessment of ER-negative subtype breast cancer (ER-BC) risk indicated that OCs use significantly increased the risk: OR = 1.3079, 95% CI: 1.0003 to 1.7100, = 0.050. Analysis for HER2-positive breast cancer (HER2+BC) risk showed that OCs use statistically non-significantly lowered the risk: OR = 0.8810, 95% CI: 0.5977 to 1.2984, = 0.522. Meta-analysis with regard to Triplet-negative breast cancer (TNBC) risk showed non-statistically significant increased risk: OR = 1.553, 95% CI: 0.99 to 2.43, = 0.055. The findings of the meta-analysis suggest that breast cancer risk in premenopausal women may vary with respect to molecular subtypes. Extensive scientific work is still necessary in order to understand the impact of OCs use on breast cancer risk in young women.

BACKGROUND
Lower bone mineral density (BMD) increases the risk of osteoporosis in individuals with eating disorders (EDs), particularly women with anorexia nervosa (AN), making them susceptible to pain and fractures throughout adulthood. In AN, low weight, hypothalamic amenorrhoea, and longer illness duration are established risk factors for low BMD, and in people with other EDs a history of AN seems to be an important risk factor for low BMD.
PURPOSE
To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of BMD in individuals with EDs, including AN, bulimia nervosa (BN), binge-eating disorder (BED) and other specified feeding or eating disorders (OSFED) compared to healthy controls (HC).
METHODS
Following PRISMA guidelines, electronic databases were reviewed and supplemented with a literature search until 2/2022 of publications measuring BMD (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry or dual photon absorptiometry) in females with any current ED diagnosis and a HC group. Primary outcomes were spine, hip, femur and total body BMD. Explanatory variables were fat mass, lean mass and ED clinical characteristics (age, illness duration, body mass index (BMI), amenorrhoea occurrence and duration, and oral contraceptives use).
RESULTS
Forty-three studies were identified (N = 4163 women, mean age 23.4 years, min: 14.0, max: 37.4). No study with individuals with BED met the inclusion criteria. BMD in individuals with AN (total body, spine, hip, and femur), with BN (total body and spine) and with OSFED (spine) was lower than in HC. Meta-regression analyses of women with any ED (AN, BN or OSFED) (N = 2058) showed low BMI, low fat mass, low lean mass and being amenorrhoeic significantly associated with lower total body and spine BMD. In AN, only low fat mass was significantly associated with low total body BMD.
CONCLUSION
Predictors of low BMD were low BMI, low fat mass, low lean mass and amenorrhoea, but not age or illness duration. In people with EDs, body composition measurement and menstrual status, in addition to BMI, are likely to provide a more accurate assessment of individual risk to low BMD and osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND
Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) has been one of the leading causes of mortality in the world. Despite common understanding regarding ACS as an older population's or man's disease, the number of young women affected by this condition is increasing. Many studies have assessed the risk factors of ACS, but only a few studies focused on this subpopulation. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aim to evaluate the risk factors predisposing to ACS in the young women population.
METHODS
Nine online databases were screened from the date of inception to September 2021, where the acquired studies were evaluated using the PRISMA statement. The inclusion criteria were a case control study with women age cut-off of <50 years. The risk factors of acute coronary syndrome were analyzed using a random-effect model, expressed as summary statistics of odds ratio (OR) for categorical variable and standard mean difference (SMD) for continuous data with normal distribution, with 95% confidence interval (CI). Quality assessment was conducted using the STROBE statement.
RESULTS
Seven studies with the total of 7042 patients met the inclusion criteria of this metaanalysis. Diabetes mellitus, high BMI, obesity, hypercholestrolemia, hypertension, smoking, and family history significantly increased acute coronary syndrome risk in young women. Other risks such as heavy alcohol consumption, oral contraceptive use, and postmenopausal state were associated with higher risk of ACS.
CONCLUSION
The independent risk factors which are strongly related to ACS in young women were diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia with odd ratios of 6.21, 5.32, and 4.07. Other risk factors which may be associated with an increased risk of ACS in young women were heavy alcohol consumption, oral contraceptive use, and postmenopausal state. Health promotion and effective intervention on this specific population regarding these risk factors can decrease young female cardiovascular morbidity and mortality as well as improved quality of life of women.

PURPOSE
Alveolar osteitis (AO) is a common postoperative complication of third molar extractions that is thought to be associated with the intake of oral contraceptives (OCPs). This meta-analysis sought to evaluate the risk of AO associated with OCP use and sex independently and whether this risk was affected by the use of postoperative analgesics or antibiotics.
METHODS
PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases were searched for articles pertaining to OCP use and the incidence of AO using MESH terms. The measured outcome was the development of AO following a third molar extraction. Additional variables such as sex, analgesic, and antibiotic use were documented and included in the analysis. The data were analyzed in R using the Mantel-Haenszel method.
RESULTS
Fifteen studies with a total of 1366 female participants who were OCP users and 2919 nonuser female participants were included in this meta-analysis. OCP users were approximately twice (pooled-RR: 1.98, 95% CI: 1.42-2.76) as likely to develop AO following a third molar extraction when compared to nonuser females. The increased incidence of AO in the OCP group was statistically significant ( < 0.01). The pooled-RR of AO in females not taking OCPs was not significantly different from males (=0.45).
CONCLUSIONS
OCP use significantly elevated the risk of AO in females. Females who did not take OCPs had a similar risk of developing AO compared to males, suggesting that OCP use is a potential effect modifier. Neither postoperative antibiotics use nor the type of postoperative analgesic significantly affected AO incidence in those taking OCPs.

There is limited understanding of the potential relationship between the risk of colorectal cancer and oral contraceptive use among women of different ages. Further investigation on the issue helps develop an informed choice of contraception. Data for this meta-analysis were derived from case-control and cohort studies of colorectal cancer and oral contraceptive use conducted between June 2000 and May 2022. The studies had a very high heterogeneity, as shown by an I of 99%, and a confidence interval of 95% was considered significant. Other results from the meta-analysis were as follows; Heterogeneity: Chi = 585.13, df = 6 (P < 0.00001). A test of the overall effect of ever use versus never use of oral contraceptives was Z = 21.85 (P < 0.00001). All the studies had a pooled risk ratio (RR) of 0.53. The use of oral contraceptives is associated with reduced risk of developing colorectal cancer. There is a need for further research into the biological mechanisms underlying these relationships, which may lead to insights into potential preventive interventions for colorectal carcinogenesis in women. The keywords used to locate studies included in this meta-analysis include Keywords targeting oral contraceptives included oral contraceptive pills, and birth control pills. Search keywords targeting colorectal carcinogenesis included neoplasms, tumors, or colon and rectal cancer.

BACKGROUND
Increasing numbers of BReast CAncer (BRCA) 1 or 2 pathogenic variant (PV) carriers, who have an inherited predisposition to breast and ovarian cancer, are being identified. Among these women, data regarding the effects of contraception on cancer risks are unclear and various guidelines provide various recommendations.
OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE
We aim to optimize counselling regarding contraception for BRCA1/2-PV carriers. Therefore, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis. We investigated the risk ratio for developing breast cancer or ovarian cancer in BRCA1/2-PV carriers who have used any form of contraception versus non-users. Second, we analysed breast and ovarian cancer risk among BRCA1/2-PV carriers as influenced by the duration of contraceptive use and by the time since last use. In addition, we provide an overview of all relevant international guidelines regarding contraceptive use for BRCA1/2-PV carriers.
SEARCH METHODS
A systematic search in the Medline database and Cochrane library identified studies describing breast and/or ovarian cancer risk in BRCA1/2-PV carriers as modified by contraception until June 2021. The search included medical subject headings, keywords and synonyms related to BRCA and contraceptives (any kind). PRISMA guidance was followed. Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies of Interventions and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations assessments were performed. Random-effects meta-analyses were used to estimate pooled effects for breast and ovarian cancer risk separately. Subgroup analyses were conducted for BRCA1 versus BRCA2 and for the various contraceptive methods.
OUTCOMES
Results of the breast cancer risk with oral contraceptive pill (OCP) analysis depended on the outcome measure. Meta-analyses of seven studies with 7525 women revealed a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.55 (95% CI: 1.36-1.76) and of four studies including 9106 women resulted in an odds ratio (OR) of 1.06 (95% CI: 0.90-1.25), heterogeneity (I2) 0% and 52%, respectively. Breast cancer risk was still increased in ever-users compared with never-users >10 years after last OCP use. In contrast, ovarian cancer risk was decreased among OCP users: HR 0.62 (95% CI: 0.52-0.74) based on two studies including 10 981 women (I2: 0%), and OR 0.49 (95% CI: 0.38-0.63) based on eight studies including 10 390 women (I2: 64%). The protective effect vanished after cessation of use. Tubal ligation also protects against ovarian cancer: one study including 3319 women (I2: 0%): HR: 0.44 (95% CI: 0.26-0.74) and three studies with 7691 women (I2: 44%): OR: 0.74 (95% CI: 0.53-1.03). Data regarding other contraceptives were unavailable. No differences were observed between BRCA1 and BRCA2-PV carriers. The quality of evidence was either low or very low.
WIDER IMPLICATIONS
The OCP potentially increases breast cancer risk, while ovarian cancer risk decreases with either the OCP and tubal ligation in BRCA1/2-PV carriers. Counselling of BRCA1/2-PV carriers should be personalized; the genetic and non-genetic factors (like prior risk-reducing surgeries, prior breast cancer and age) and patients' preferences (reversibility, ease of use, reliability and effect on menstrual cycle) should be balanced. To further optimize counselling for high-risk women, future research should focus on other (commonly used) contraceptive methods and cancer risks in this specific population, and on the potential impact of changing formulations over time.

BACKGROUND
Sexual orientation is usually developed during the adolescence, which coincides with the eating disorders peak onset. This paper aims to explore existing literature to identify whether there is an association between sexual orientation and eating disorder-related eating behaviours (EDrEBs) in this age-group.
METHODS
This review was based on the PRISMA guidelines, covering the published articles between 1990 and 2021. A meta-analysis of the proportion of sexual orientation and the adjusted odds ratio (OR) with 95% confident intervals was reported.
RESULTS
Ten studies (412,601 participants) were included in this review. The results demonstrated adolescents identified as minority sexual orientation, particularly homosexual males were with higher OR of EDrEBs, as follows: Homosexual (binge eating: M = 7.20, F = 2.14; purging: M = 5.40, F = 2.41; diet pills use: M = 3.50, F = 2.59; dieting: M = 3.10, F = 1.75); Bisexual (binge eating: M = 4.60, F = 2.26; purging: M = 4.44, F = 2.37; diet pills use: M = 3.42, F = 2.30; dieting: M = 2.36, F = 1.86).
CONCLUSIONS
Adolescents who were of a minority sexual orientation were more vulnerable to EDrEBs than their heterosexual peers. Healthcare professionals and sexual minority communities should be primed to facilitate earlier recognition and access to services in these vulnerable groups.
