. Pets infected with zoonotic pathogens might become a source of infections for their owners, especially those who are immuno-compromised. The aim of this report is to describe a case of chronic, untreatable pneumonia in a domestic ferret. The subject was a 5-year-old female ferret suffering from recurrent pneumonia. Ante-mortally, swabs from the nasal cavity, alveolus and throat were collected from the animal. Post-mortally, lesioned organ fragments were collected. Standard microbiological testing was performed. Additionally, mycobacterial diagnosis including culture and molecular tests was performed. . The co-infection of Mycobacterium avium and Klebsiella pneumoniae was microbiologically confirmed. This case demonstrates the need to pay attention to the possibility of zoonotic pathogens in ferrets. Veterinarians diagnosing ferrets are potentially exposed to Mycobacteria spp. infections and other pathogens.

Meta-Analysis Comparative Study Review
: The present systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to evaluate and compare the long-term clinical outcomes of immediate implants placed into fresh sockets with and without periapical pathology. : After the search and review of the literature in the electronic databases, 109 publications were achieved. The titles and abstracts of 66 publications were screened. After the evaluation of the full text of 22 publications, based on the inclusion criteria, six controlled clinical studies were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The statistical calculation showed no heterogeneity among the studies included. The implant survival was 99.6% in the test (socket with periapical pathology) and control (socket without periapical pathology) groups of all the clinical trials. The results of the meta-analysis showed no statistically significant difference between test and control groups regarding the marginal bone level and the width of keratinized mucosa in all the studies. Other parameters indicating plaque level, bleeding on probing, and gingival recession also did not differ between test and control groups at the final follow-up in nearly all studies. : Within the limitation of this systemic review and meta-analysis, the obtained data suggest that implants immediately placed into the extraction sockets of teeth exhibiting periapical pathology can be successfully osseointegrated for an extended period.

The pathology of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), often associated with antiresorptive therapy, is still not fully understood. Osteocyte networks are known to play a critical role in maintaining bone homeostasis and repair, but the exact condition of these networks in MRONJ is unknown. On the other hand, the local application of E-coli-derived Recombinant Human Bone Morphogenetic Protein 2/β-Tricalcium phosphate (E-rhBMP-2/β-TCP) has been shown to promote bone regeneration and mitigate osteonecrosis in MRONJ-like mouse models, indicating its potential therapeutic application for the treatment of MRONJ. However, the detailed effect of BMP-2 treatment on restoring bone integrity, including its osteocyte network, in an MRONJ condition remains unclear. Therefore, in the present study, by applying a scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis and a 3D osteocyte network reconstruction workflow on the alveolar bone surrounding the tooth extraction socket of an MRONJ-like mouse model, we examined the effectiveness of BMP-2/β-TCP therapy on the alleviation of MRONJ-related bone necrosis with a particular focus on the osteocyte network and alveolar bone microstructure (microcrack accumulation). The 3D osteocyte dendritic analysis showed a significant decrease in osteocyte dendritic parameters along with a delay in bone remodeling in the MRONJ group compared to the healthy counterpart. The SEM analysis also revealed a notable increase in the number of microcracks in the alveolar bone surface in the MRONJ group compared to the healthy group. In contrast, all of those parameters were restored in the E-rhBMP-2/β-TCP-treated group to levels that were almost similar to those in the healthy group. In summary, our study reveals that MRONJ induces osteocyte network degradation and microcrack accumulation, while application of E-rhBMP-2/β-TCP can restore a compromised osteocyte network and abrogate microcrack accumulation in MRONJ.

BACKGROUND
Over time, numerous surgical procedures and biomaterials have been proposed for the reconstruction of post-extraction bone defects, each with their advantages and disadvantages. The main objective of this study was to evaluate dimensional changes in the alveolar bone 3 months after tooth extraction, before implant planning, comparing alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) with spontaneous healing.
METHODS
A total of 84 patients with non-restorable molars were included in the study. Forty-two patients received ARP with advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) and spontaneous healing was evaluated in these patients. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) analysis performed before and after surgical intervention was used to determine the changes in vertical and horizontal bone dimensions produced after tooth extraction.
RESULTS
CBCT measurements showed reduction in both vertical and horizontal alveolar bone size in both groups. For the study group, the alveolar parameters (height, width) were higher compared to the control group. The percentage variations between dimensional differences from the two groups were 38.58% for height, and for width were 36.88% at 0 mm, 35.56% at 3 mm, 36.61% at 5 mm, and 38.73% at 7 mm. The differences were statistically significant ( ˂ 0.0005).
CONCLUSIONS
The results obtained after ARP with A-PRF showed a reduced loss of bone volume compared to spontaneous healing.

BACKGROUND
Alveolar preservation techniques for esthetic or functional purposes, or both, are a frequently used alternative for the treatment of post-extraction sockets, the aim of which is the regeneration of the lesion and the preservation of the alveolar bone crest.
METHODS
Studies published in PubMed (Medline), Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases up to January 2024 were consulted. Inclusion criteria were established as intervention studies, according to the PICOs strategy: adult subjects undergoing dental extractions (participants), with alveoli treated with bone mineral grafts and collagen membranes (intervention), compared to spontaneous healing (comparison), and observing the response to treatment in clinical and radiological measures of the alveolar bone crest (outcomes).
RESULTS
We obtained 561 results and selected 12 studies. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool, and methodological quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute. Due to the high heterogeneity of the studies (I > 75%), a random-effects meta-analysis was used. Despite the trend, no statistical significance ( > 0.05) was found in the experimental groups.
CONCLUSIONS
The use of bone mineral grafts in combination with resorbable collagen barriers provides greater preservation of the alveolar ridge, although more clinical studies are needed.

Rectangular Block Implant (RBIs) were manufactured, using computer-aided-design lathe turning, surface roughened with grit blasting and gamma irradiated. Implants were surgically placed into the resorbed edentulous mandibular ridges of both greyhound dogs (ex vivo and in vivo) and humans; the pooled total was 17 placements. The aim was to achieve mechanical stability and full implant submergence without damage to the mandibular canal and without bone fracture: fulfilment of all of these criteria was deemed to be a successful surgical outcome. Rectangular osteotomy sites were prepared with piezo surgical instrumentation. Sixteen implants were fully submerged and achieved good primary stability without bone fracture and without evidence of impingement of the mandibular canal. One implant placement was deemed a failure due to bone fracture: the event of a random successful outcome was rejected ( < 0.01 confidence, binomial analysis). Technique of placement yielded excellent mechanical retention: key biomechanical factors that emerged in this process included under preparation of the osteotomy site with the use of specifically designed trial-fit gauges, the viscoelastic property of the peri-implant bone, the flat faces and cornered edges of the block surfaces which enhance stress distribution and mechanical retention, respectively. It was concluded that the surgical protocol for the RBI placement in the resorbed alveolus is a predictable clinical procedure tailored to its specific, unique biomechanical profile.

BACKGROUND
The maxilla comprises horizontal and vertical buttresses, each with specific functions, supporting various organs, such as the eyes, nose, and oral cavity. Notably, they combine to form a three-dimensional structure, which enables the buttresses to provide their inherent support strength. However, reconstructing the maxilla after maxillectomy by assembling new buttresses is challenging. We successfully reconstructed all the buttresses crucial for facial appearance and dental rehabilitation using a vascularized fibular flap.
METHODS
Four patients underwent maxillary buttress reconstruction with a fibular flap after total or subtotal maxillectomy. We used computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing digital technology to osteotomize the fibula into multiple segments and assemble them to reconstruct the maxillary buttresses. Each buttress was assembled based on a preoperative simulation.
RESULTS
All patients underwent immediate one-stage maxillary reconstruction. They had good maxillary buttress alignment and acquired good facial appearance, eye position, nasal airway, and prosthetically suitable maxillary alveolus ridge.
CONCLUSIONS
The combination of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing digital technology and surgical techniques has enabled novel maxillary reconstruction, providing great hope to patients experiencing facial disfigurement and loss of function after maxillectomy.

BACKGROUND
Post-tooth extraction, dry socket is a frequently encountered complication, causing substantial pain and hindering the healing process. Conventional approaches to manage this condition have traditionally involved the use of antiseptic dressings to diminish bacterial presence and facilitate healing. This study aims to assess the efficacy of laser therapy in the symptomatic treatment of alveolitis.
METHODS
A literature search was conducted on PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science, focusing on publications from 1998 to 31/01/2024 using relevant keywords. The combination of "laser" and "dry socket" was executed through the boolean connection AND.
RESULTS
At the conclusion of the study, a total of 50 studies were identified across the three search engines, with only three selected for the current systematic study and meta-analysis. The meta-analysis indicated that laser treatment proves effective in addressing alveolitis compared to Alvogyl. However, the correlation between the two was not highly significant.
CONCLUSION
These findings suggest that laser therapy may serve as a viable alternative to traditional treatments for dry socket. This minimally invasive procedure has the potential to alleviate pain and promote healing with fewer associated side effects."

BACKGROUND
Following the loss of a tooth, the new edentulous area of the ridge will undergo several adaptive modifications due to changes in function within and surrounding the socket. This bone resorption explains the need for socket preservation techniques in areas of esthetic concerns and functional demands. Demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA) possesses greater osteoinductive potential due to the exposure of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP-3)and collagen fibrils and can be used efficiently in socket preservation techniques. DFDBA yields better results when combined with an autologous platelet concentrate, such as platelet-rich fibrin. Therefore, we formulated this randomized controlled clinical trial to assess the clinical and radiovisiographical outcomes of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and DFDBAs for extraction socket preservation in humans at different time intervals.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
This was a randomized controlled trial with 100 people as study subjects, and they were randomly divided into two groups: the test group (DFDBA and PRF placed in the extraction socket) and the control group (natural healing of the extraction socket). Clinical and radiographic evaluation using radiovisiography (RVG) was done at baseline, three-month, and six-month intervals. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was used at six months to determine the bone density in the test and control groups.
RESULTS
When compared from baseline to six months, the percentage change in clinical and RVG measurements for the test group was 15.96% (11.9064 mm) and 16.77% (12.1840 mm), respectively, whereas for the control group, it was 46.09% (14.0396 mm) and 47.61% (14.5716 mm), thus indicating lesser bone resorption in the test group as opposed to the control group. CBCT values also showed greater bone density for the test group (682.3120 HU) than the control group (503.8336 HU).
CONCLUSION
This study demonstrates the advantages of DFDBA bone graft with PRF compared to natural healing in achieving socket preservation by maintaining the marginal and buccolingual bone levels.

Post-extraction wound infections are a common complication of dental extractions. More specifically, infection in the alveolar socket after tooth extraction accelerates the resorption and destruction of the alveolar bone, and ultimately affects the final restoration results. Currently, the main clinical treatment approaches applied to the socket after tooth extraction include mechanical wound debridement, chemical rinses (, chlorhexidine), filling of the extraction socket with absorbent gelatin sponges, and the systemic application of antibiotics. However, these traditional treatment modalities have some limitations and their therapeutic effects are unsatisfactory. In this study, a phototherapeutic temperature-sensitive hydrogel material was constructed for injection using a tea polyphenol (TP)-modified poly--isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) hydrogel skeleton loaded with the photosensitiser indocyanine green (ICG). The resulting PNIPAM-TP/ICG system exhibited an excellent injectability and temperature-sensitive properties. In addition, it stopped haemorrhaging and acted as a wound astringent. The hydrogel steadily released ICG into the oral environment to exert photothermal/photodynamic effects along with synergistic antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties when combined with tea polyphenols. experiments demonstrated that the application of PNIPAM-TP/ICG to infected dental extraction wounds in rats rapidly stopped the bleeding and accelerated wound healing. Overall, this study describes a drug-loaded, temperature-sensitive hydrogel for the treatment of open wound infections, and shows promise as a reference for the treatment of tooth extraction wounds.
