BACKGROUND
The present study aimed to explore the maternal and perinatal risks in cases of monozygotic twins (MZT) following frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET).
METHODS
All twin births that were conceived following FET from 2007 to 2021 at Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital in Shanghai, China were retrospectively reviewed. The exposure variable was twin type (monozygotic and dizygotic). The primary outcome was the incidence of neonatal death while secondary outcomes included hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, placenta previa, placental abruption, preterm premature rupture of the membranes, Cesarean delivery, gestational age, birth weight, weight discordance, stillbirth, birth defects, pneumonia, respiratory distress syndrome, necrotizing enterocolitis, and neonatal jaundice. Analysis of the outcomes was performed using logistic regression models to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The causal mediation analysis was conducted. A doubly robust estimation model was used to validate the results. Kaplan-Meier method was used to calculate survival probability. The sensitivity analysis was performed with a propensity score-based patient-matching model.
RESULTS
Of 6101 dizygotic twin (DZT) and 164 MZT births conceived by FET, MZT showed an increased risk of neonatal death based on the multivariate logistic regression models (partially adjusted OR: 4.19; 95% CI, 1.23-10.8; fully adjusted OR: 4.95; 95% CI, 1.41-13.2). Similar results were obtained with the doubly robust estimation. Comparing MZT with DZT, the neonatal survival probability was lower for MZT (P < 0.05). The results were robust in the sensitivity analysis. Females with MZT pregnancies exhibited an elevated risk of preterm premature rupture of the membranes (adjusted OR: 2.42; 95% CI, 1.54-3.70). MZT were also associated with higher odds of preterm birth (prior to 37 weeks) (adjusted OR: 2.31; 95% CI, 1.48-3.67), low birth weight (adjusted OR: 1.92; 95% CI, 1.27-2.93), and small for gestational age (adjusted OR: 2.18; 95% CI, 1.21-3.69) in the fully adjusted analyses. The effect of MZT on neonatal death was partially mediated by preterm birth and low birth weight (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONS
This study indicates that MZT conceived by FET are related to an increased risk of neonatal death, emphasizing a potential need for comprehensive antenatal surveillance in these at-risk pregnancies.

OBJECTIVE
The study aimed to evaluate the pregnancy outcomes of dichorionic diamniotic twin pregnancies that were reduced to singletons at different gestational ages.
STUDY DESIGN
This was a retrospective cohort study of twin pregnancies that underwent fetal reduction to singletons in a single tertiary referral center between 2011 and 2020. A total of 433 cases were included. The cohort was divided into five groups according to gestational age at surgery: Group A: <16 weeks (125 cases); Group B: 16-19 weeks (80 cases); Group C: 20-23 weeks (74 cases); Group D: 24-26 weeks (48 cases); and Group E: ≥27 weeks (106 cases). Outcome data were obtained by reviewing the electronic medical records or interviews.
RESULTS
Selective reduction was technically successful. The clinical characteristics of the population were not different. The overall live birth rate and the survival rate were 96.5 and 95.4%, respectively. Although the rate of spontaneous miscarriage was comparable, gestational age at delivery significantly differed among groups ( < 0.001). Additionally, there was a trend that gestational age at delivery decreased with the increasing gestational age at surgery in Groups A, B, C, and D, whereas gestational age at delivery in Group E was later than that in Group D. In Groups A, B, C, and D, the rates of preterm birth at <32 weeks and <34 weeks increased with the increasing gestational age at surgery, while the rates in Group E were significantly lower than that in Group D. Regression analysis showed that timing of reduction may be an independent factor after adjusting for maternal age, parity, pre-pregnancy BMI, ART, and cervical length.
CONCLUSION
Selective reduction performed by experienced hands for a dizygotic abnormal twin is safe and effective. Gestational age at surgery (<26 weeks) was inversely correlated with gestational age at delivery and positively with the rate of preterm birth. Reduction after 27 weeks, where legal, can be performed with a good outcome for the retained fetus.

INTRODUCTION
This study aimed to discover the genetic and environmental factors that contribute to the mandibular development of untreated monozygotic and dizygotic twins.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
The sample, taken from the Forsyth Moorrees Twin Study, included 52 untreated monozygotic twins (36 male, 16 female) and 46 untreated dizygotic twins (23 male, 23 female). At the ages of 12 and 17, lateral cephalograms were collected and traced to assess total mandibular length, mandibular ramus length, mandibular corpus length, gonial angle, SNB, and bony chin prominence. The genetic and environmental components of variation were assessed using multilevel mixed-effects structural equation modelling.
RESULTS
At 12 years of age, high additive genetic influences were observed for total mandibular length (74%), gonial angle (76%), SNB (41%), and bony chin prominence (64%), whereas strong dominant genetic components were observed for corpus length (72%), and mandibular ramus length was under unique environment influence (54%). At 17 years of age, only total mandibular length (45%), ramus length (53%), gonial angle (76%), and bony chin prominence (68%) were under strong additive genetic control, while the remainder were under strong dominant genetic control.
CONCLUSIONS
Although monozygotic and dizygotic twins share at least a portion of their DNA, additive, dominant, or environmental components were discovered during adolescence. Nonetheless, by the age of 17, the majority of the mandibular traits are under either additive or dominant genetic impact.

Nutrition and diet are key modifiable risk factors for the rising burden of non-communicable diseases like cardio-vascular diseases and diabetes in low- and middle- income countries (LMICs). The nutritional transition in dietary behaviours in LMICs has most likely contributed to this problem. Although traditionally assumed to be environmental, dietary choices are also genetically influenced. Twin study designs can be used to investigate the relative influence of genes and environment on nutrition intake, eating behaviours and associated psychological health. The overall aim of this project is to: provide proof-of-concept for the feasibility of using dietary (biomarker) data within the Children-of-Twin design in nutrition studies, develop laboratory skills and statistical genetic skills and establish a Sri Lankan-specific food composition database. Currently, a pilot study is being conducted with 304 individuals (38 Monozygotic twin pairs, 38 Dizygotic twin pairs and their male or female adult offspring). Questionnaire data on nutritional intake, eating behaviours, psychological well-being, physical health, and bio-specimens are being collected. A Sri Lankan-specific food composition database was developed, training sessions on macro and micro element analysis in biological samples and statistical genetics skills development were conducted and Community Engagement and Involvement programs were carried out in two districts of Sri Lanka.

The aesthetic values that individuals place on visual images are formed and shaped over a lifetime. However, whether the formation of visual aesthetic value is solely influenced by environmental exposure is still a matter of debate. Here, we considered differences in aesthetic value emerging across three visual domains: abstract images, scenes, and faces. We examined variability in two major dimensions of ordinary aesthetic experiences: taste-typicality and evaluation-bias. We build on two samples from the Australian Twin Registry where 1547 and 1231 monozygotic and dizygotic twins originally rated visual images belonging to the three domains. Genetic influences explained 26% to 41% of the variance in taste-typicality and evaluation-bias. Multivariate analyses showed that genetic effects were partially shared across visual domains. Results indicate that the heritability of major dimensions of aesthetic evaluations is comparable to that of other complex social traits, albeit lower than for other complex cognitive traits. The exception was taste-typicality for abstract images, for which we found only shared and unique environmental influences. Our study reveals that diverse sources of genetic and environmental variation influence the formation of aesthetic value across distinct visual domains and provides improved metrics to assess inter-individual differences in aesthetic value.

BACKGROUND
Accurate prenatal recognition of discordant fetal growth in twins is critical for deciding suitable management strategies. We explored the predictive value of the level of maternal second-trimester placental growth factor (PLGF) as a novel indicator of discordant fetal growth.
METHODS
A total of 860 women pregnant with twins were enrolled, including 168 women with monochorionic twins (31 cases of discordant fetal growth and 137 without) and 692 with dichorionic twins (79 cases of discordant fetal growth and 613 without). Maternal second-trimester PLGF concentrations were measured via immunofluorescence.
RESULTS
Maternal second-trimester PLGF levels were significantly lower in women pregnant with twins who subsequently developed discordant fetal growth than in those who did not (monochorionic twin pregnancy: P < 0.001; dichorionic twin pregnancy: P < 0.001). A 3-4 fold difference in median PLGF concentrations was detected between the two groups with both monochorionic and dichorionic twin pregnancies. Maternal second-trimester PLGF levels were significantly correlated with birth weight differences (monochorionic twin pregnancy: r = - 0.331, P < 0.001; dichorionic twin pregnancy: r = - 0.234, P < 0.001). A receiver operating characteristic curve was used to evaluate the predictive efficiency. In monochorionic twin pregnancies, the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.751 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.649-0.852), and the cutoff value was 187.5 pg/mL with a sensitivity of 77.4% and specificity of 71.0%. In dichorionic twin pregnancies, the AUC was 0.716 (95% CI; 0.655-0.777), and the cutoff value was 252.5 pg/mL with a sensitivity of 65.1% and specificity of 69.6%. Based on the above cutoff values, univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to calculate the odds ratios (OR) for the PLGF levels. After adjustment for potential confounding factors, low PLGF concentrations still significantly increased the risk of discordant fetal growth (monochorionic twin pregnancy: adjusted OR: 7.039, 95% CI: 2.798-17.710, P < 0.001; dichorionic twin pregnancy: adjusted OR: 4.279, 95% CI: 2.572-7.120, P < 0.001).
CONCLUSIONS
A low maternal second-trimester PLGF level is considered a remarkable risk factor and potential predictor of discordant fetal growth. This finding provides a complementary screening strategy for the prediction of discordant fetal growth and offers a unique perspective for the subsequent research in this field.

The present study examines whether neuroticism is predicted by genetic vulnerability, summarized as polygenic risk score for neuroticism (PRS), in interaction with bullying, parental bonding, and childhood adversity. Data were derived from a general population adolescent and young adult twin cohort. The final sample consisted of 202 monozygotic and 436 dizygotic twins and 319 twin pairs. The Short Eysenck Personality questionnaire was used to measure neuroticism. PRS was trained on the results from the Genetics of Personality Consortium (GPC) and United Kingdom Biobank (UKB) cohorts, yielding two different PRS. Multilevel mixed-effects models were used to analyze the main and interacting associations of PRS, childhood adversity, bullying, and parental bonding style with neuroticism. We found no evidence of gene-environment correlation. PRS thresholds of .005 and .2 were chosen, based on GPC and UKB datasets, respectively. After correction for confounders, all the individual variables were associated with the expression of neuroticism: both PRS from GPC and UKB, childhood adversity, maternal bonding, paternal bonding, and bullying in primary school and secondary school. However, the results indicated no evidence for gene-environment interaction in this cohort. These results suggest that genetic vulnerability on the one hand and negative life events (childhood adversity and bullying) and positive life events (optimal parental bonding) on the other represent noninteracting pathways to neuroticism.

INTRODUCTION
Dementia predicts increased mortality. We used case-control and co-twin control models to investigate genetic and shared environmental influences on this association.
METHODS
Case-control design, including 987 twins with dementia and 2938 age- and sex-matched controls in the Swedish Twin Registry. Co-twin control design, including 90 monozygotic (MZ) and 288 dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs discordant for dementia. To test for genetic and environmental confounding, differences were examined in mortality risk between twins with dementia and their matched or co-twin controls.
RESULTS
Twins with dementia showed greater mortality risk than age- and sex-matched controls (HR = 2.02 [1.86, 2.18]). Mortality risk is significantly elevated but attenuated substantially in discordant twin pairs, for example, comparing MZ twins with dementia to their co-twin controls (HR = 1.48 [1.08, 2.04]).
DISCUSSION
Findings suggest that genetic factors partially confound the association between dementia and mortality and provide an alternative hypothesis to increased mortality due to dementia itself. Highlights We studied dementia and mortality in twin pairs discordant for dementia. People without dementia outlived people with dementia. Identical twins with dementia and their co-twin controls had similar survival time. Findings suggest genotype may explain the link between dementia and mortality.

OBJECTIVE
The relationship between obesity and mental health is complex and is moderated by the level of obesity, age, sex, and social and genetic factors. In the current study, we used a unique co-twin control design, with twin pairs discordant for body mass index (BMI), to control for shared genetic and environmental effects between obesity and several dimensions of mental health.
METHODS
We studied 74 monozygotic (MZ) twin pairs, of whom 36 were BMI-discordant (intra-pair difference in BMI ≥ 3 kg/m2), and 77 dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs (46 BMI-discordant). We assessed subjective health, especially mental health and mental well-being (depression, anxiety, self-esteem, health-related quality of life, life satisfaction, and social well-being) through questionnaires.
RESULTS
Heavier MZ co-twins from BMI-discordant pairs had poorer general health (58.8±3.0 vs. 72.4±3.8, P = 0.001, FDR = 0.017 on a scale from 0 to 100 where higher scores indicate more positive results), physical functioning (90.3±1.1 vs. 95.5±2.2, P = 0.024, FDR = 0.122), energy levels (55.6±3.4 vs. 66.6±3.3, P = 0.013, FDR = 0.109), and emotional well-being (65.9±3.2 vs. 75.4±2.9, P = 0.031, FDR = 0.122), as well as a tendency for depressive symptoms (8.4±1.3 vs. 5.6±0.9, P = 0.071, FDR = 0.166) compared to their leaner co-twins. Heavier DZ co-twins had poorer total physical well-being (91.6±1.9 vs. 95.6±1.0, P = 0.035, FDR = 0.356) and more depressive symptoms (4.3±0.9 vs. 2.4±0.5, P = 0.016, FDR = 0.345 on a scale from 0 to 63 where lower scores indicate fewer depressive symptoms) than their leaner co-twins. Association analyses, using all twin pairs, confirmed that higher BMI within pairs linked to general health, physical functioning and depressive symptoms. No association was found between BMI and anxiety, self-esteem, life satisfaction, or social well-being.
CONCLUSIONS
In conclusion, this study underscores the notable association between elevated BMI and physical well-being and to a lesser extent between elevated BMI and depressive symptoms, while revealing no discernible connections with anxiety, self-esteem, life satisfaction, or social well-being.
