Mesoporous silica nanoparticles hosting guest molecules are a versatile tool with applications in various fields such as life and environmental sciences. Current commonly applied pore blocking strategies are not universally applicable and are often not robust enough to withstand harsh ambient conditions ( geothermal). In this work, a titania layer is utilized as a robust pore blocker, with a test-case where it is used for the encapsulation of fluorescent dyes. The layer is formed by a hydrolysis process of a titania precursor in an adapted microemulsion system and demonstrates effective protection of both the dye payload and the silica core from disintegration under otherwise damaging external conditions. The produced dye-MSN@TiO particles are characterized by means of electron microscopy, elemental mapping, ζ-potential, X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), fluorescence and absorbance spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy - Total Attenuated Reflectance (FT-IR ATR). Finally, the performance of the titania-encapsulated MSNs is demonstrated in long-term aqueous stability and in flow-through experiments, where owing to improved dispersion encapsulated dye results in improved flow properties compared to free dye properties. This behavior exemplifies the potential advantage of carrier-borne marker molecules over free dye molecules in applications where accessibility or targeting are a factor, thus this encapsulation method increases the variety of fields of application.

The novel SARS-CoV-2 introduced several new inflammatory conditions including SARS-CoV-2-associated rhabdomyolysis and viral myositis. We present a 22-year-old man who noted a week of cough followed by myalgias, dark-colored urine, and decreased oral intake. He was found to have acute nontraumatic rhabdomyolysis after an acutely positive SARS-CoV-2 test. Initial creatine kinase (CK) level was above the reference range as were liver enzymes reflective of muscle breakdown. Treatment involved fluid resuscitation and pain control, with close monitoring of kidney, liver, and skeletal markers over five days of hospitalization till there was clinical and symptomatic improvement.

PURPOSE
The topical application of antioxidants has been shown to augment the skin's innate antioxidant system and enhance photoprotection. A challenge of topical antioxidant formulation is stability and penetrability. The use of a targeted drug delivery system may improve the bioavailability and delivery of antioxidants. In this ex vivo study, we assessed the effects of the topical application of a liposome-encapsulated antioxidant complex versus a free antioxidant complex alone on skin photoaging parameters and penetrability in human skin explants.
PATIENTS AND METHODS
Human organotypic skin explant cultures (hOSEC) were irradiated to mimic photoaging. The encapsulated antioxidant complex and free antioxidant complex were applied topically onto the irradiated hOSEC daily for 7 days. The two control groups were healthy untreated hOSEC and irradiated hOSEC. Photoprotective efficacy was measured with pro-inflammatory cytokine (IL-6 and IL-8) and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) secretion. Cell viability and metabolic activity were measured via resazurin assay. Tissue damage was evaluated via lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) cytotoxicity assay. Skin penetration of the encapsulated antioxidant complex was assessed via fluorescent dye and confocal microscopy.
RESULTS
Compared to healthy skin, irradiated skin experienced increases in IL-6, IL-8 (p < 0.05), and MMP-9 (p < 0.05) secretion. After treatment with the encapsulated antioxidant complex, there was a 39.3% reduction in IL-6 secretion, 49.8% reduction in IL-8 (p < 0.05), and 38.5% reduction in MMP-9 (p < 0.05). After treatment with the free antioxidant complex, there were no significant differences in IL-6, IL-8, or MMP-9 secretion. Neither treatment group experienced significant LDH leakage or reductions in metabolic activity. Liposomes passed through the stratum corneum and into the epidermis.
CONCLUSION
The topical application of a liposome-encapsulated antioxidant complex containing ectoin, astaxanthin-rich microalgae extract, and THDA improves penetrability and restored IL-6, IL-8, and MMP-9 levels in irradiated human skin explants, which was not seen in the comparator free antioxidant complex group.

In the current research, we prepared a polymeric framework, {[Cu(CO)(CHN)]·HO·0.67(CHOH)]} () (where CO = oxalic acid; CHN = 2,2-bipyridine), and explored this compound for adsorption of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO). The crystal structure of the compound consists of a Cu(ox)(bpy) unit connected via oxalate to form a 1D polymeric chain. This polymeric chain has adsorption capacities of 194.0 and 167.3 mg/g for MB and MO, respectively. The removal rate is estimated to be 77.6% and 66.9% for MB and MO, respectively. The plausible mechanisms for adsorption are electrostatic, π-π interaction, and OH-π interaction for dye stickiness. The adsorbent surface exhibits a negative charge that produces the electrostatic interaction, resulting in excellent adsorption efficiency at pH 7 and 8. The pseudo-first-order kinetic model is selected for the adsorption of MB and MO on the adsorbent. The reported compound has remarkable efficiency for sorption of organic dyes and can be useful in wastewater treatment.

Nanoparticles conjugated with fluorescent probes have versatile applications, serving not only for targeted fluorescent imaging but also for evaluating the in vivo profiles of designed nanoparticles. However, the relationship between fluorophore density and nanoparticle behavior remains unexplored. The IR783-modified liposomes (IR783-sLip) were prepared through a modified ethanol injection and extrusion method. The cellular uptake efficiency of IR783-sLip was characterized by flow cytometry and fluorescence microscope imaging. The effects of IR783 density on liposomal in vivo behavior were investigated by pharmacokinetic studies, biodistribution studies, and in vivo imaging. The constitution of protein corona was analyzed by the Western blot assay. Dense IR783 modification improved cellular uptake of liposomes in vitro but hindered their blood retention and tumor imaging performance in vivo. We found a correlation between IR783 density and protein corona absorption, particularly IgM, which significantly impacted the liposome performance. Meanwhile, we observed that increasing IR783 density did not consistently improve the effectiveness of tumor imaging. Increasing the density of modified IR783 on liposomes is not always beneficial for tumor near-infrared (NIR) imaging yield. It is not advisable to prematurely evaluate novel nanomaterials through fluorescence dye conjugation without carefully optimizing the density of the modifications.

This study aimed to fabricate and characterize a novel colorimetric indicator designed to detect ammonia (NH) and monitor meat freshness. The sensing platform was constructed using electrospun nanofibers made from polylactic acid (PLA), which were then impregnated with anthocyanins as a natural pH-sensitive dye, extracted from red cabbage. This research involved investigating the relationship between the various concentrations of anthocyanins and the colorimetric platform's efficiency when exposed to ammonia vapor. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) results were used to examine the morphology and structure of the nanofiber mats before and after the dip-coating process. The study also delved into the selectivity of the indicator when exposed to various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and their stability under extreme humidity levels. Furthermore, the platform's sensitivity was evaluated as it encountered ammonia (NH) in concentrations ranging from 1 to 100 ppm, with varying dye concentrations. The developed indicator demonstrated an exceptional detection limit of 1 ppm of MH within just 30 min, making it highly sensitive to subtle changes in gas concentration. The indicator proved effective in assessing meat freshness by detecting spoilage levels in beef over time. It reliably identified spoilage after 10 h and 7 days, corresponding to bacterial growth thresholds (10 CFU/mL), both at room temperature and in refrigerated environments, respectively. With its simple visual detection mechanism, the platform offered a straightforward and user-friendly solution for consumers and industry professionals alike to monitor packaged beef freshness, enhancing food safety and quality assurance.

To monitor the biological function of HS in real time, this investigation demonstrated the design and synthesis of a novel fluorescent probe integrated with cyanine and 2,4-dinitrophenol for the qualitative and quantitative detection of HS. An NIR sensitive sensor (FS-HS-1) was provided with a straightforward process. Spectroscopy experiments elucidated that FS-HS-1 could selectively detect HS in a PBS solution (containing 40% acetonitrile) with a 111-fold fluorescence enhancement at 715 nm (ex. 605 nm). The response towards NaHS occurred in less than 2 min, and the detection limit was confirmed to be as low as 4.47 ± 0.11 nmol/L. Furthermore, the probe is capable of monitoring changes in exogenous HS concentrations within living cells with confocal and 2P imaging.

Bee-collected pollen (BCP) and bee bread (BB) are honey bee products known for their beneficial biological properties. The main goal of this study was to investigate BB microbiota and its contribution to bioactivity exerted by BB. The microbiota of BB samples collected at different maturation stages was investigated via culture-independent (Next Generation Sequencing, NGS) and culture-dependent methods. Microbial communities dynamically fluctuate during BB maturation, ending in a stable microbial community structure in mature BB. Bee bread bacterial isolates were tested for phenotypes and genes implicated in the production and secretion of enzymes as well as antibacterial activity. Out of 309 bacterial isolates, 41 secreted hemicellulases, 13 cellulases, 39 amylases, 132 proteinases, 85 Coomassie brilliant blue G or R dye-degrading enzymes and 72 Malachite Green dye-degrading enzymes. Furthermore, out of 309 bacterial isolates, 42 exhibited antibacterial activity against , 34 against , 47 against ser. Typhimurium and 43 against . Artificially fermented samples exerted higher antibacterial activity compared to fresh BCP, strongly indicating that BB microbiota contribute to BB antibacterial activity. Our findings suggest that BB microbiota is an underexplored source of novel antimicrobial agents and enzymes that could lead to new applications in medicine and the food industry.

Review
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), a multifactorial and complicated metabolic disorder, is a growing public health problem. Numerous studies have indicated that bioactive compounds from herbal medicine have beneficial effects on T2DM prevention and treatment, owing to their numerous biological properties. Curcumin, the major curcuminoid of turmeric, is one of the most studied bioactive components of herbal supplements, and has a variety of biological activities. Clinical trials and preclinical research have recently produced compelling data to demonstrate the crucial functions of curcumin against T2DM via several routes. Accordingly, this review systematically summarizes the antidiabetic activity of curcumin, along with various mechanisms. Results showed that effectiveness of curcumin on T2DM is due to it being anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, antihyperglycemic, anti-apoptotic, and antihyperlipidemic, among other activities. In light of these results, curcumin may be a promising prevention/treatment choice for T2DM.

Two-dimensional MXenes have become an important material for electrochemical sensing of biomolecules due to their excellent electric properties, large surface area and hydrophilicity. However, the simultaneous detection of multiple biomolecules using MXene-based electrodes is still a challenge. Here, a simple solvothermal process was used to synthesis the TiCT coated with TiO nanosheets (TiCT@TiO NSs). The surface modification of TiO NSs on TiCT can effectively reduce the self-accumulation of TiCT and improve stability. Glassy carbon electrode was modified by TiCT@TiO NSs (TiCT@TiO NSs/GCE) and was able simultaneously to detect dopamine (DA), ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA). Under concentrations ranging from 200 to 1000 μM, 40 to 300 μM and 50 to 400 μM, the limit of detection (LOD) is 2.91 μM, 0.19 μM and 0.25 μM for AA, DA and UA, respectively. Furthermore, TiCT@TiO NSs/GCE demonstrated remarkable stability and reliable reproducibility for the detection of AA/DA/UA.
