The treatment of flue gases has become a crucial area of interest with the increasing air emissions into the atmosphere from industries involved in combustion of fossil fuels in their operations. In essence, there is a critical need for effective methods of treatment more than ever. Treatment and separation are now a demand for the overall industrial operations to control the rate of flue gas emissions. The major culprit in this wise is power generating industry. The major associated air pollutants are carbon dioxide, sulfur oxides, trace metals, volatile organic compounds, particulate matters, and nitrogen oxides. However, the choice of technologies to be utilized requires more than just knowledge of the separation process, but also a good understanding of the properties of the pollutants. This review explored and evaluated the various separation processes and technologies for the treatment of industrial flue gases for the control of the associated air pollutants. It also analyzed the performance with references to cost and efficiency, the advantages and disadvantages, principles for selection, research direction, and/or potential opportunities in existing separation processes and technologies.

Fish is an excellent source of low-fat protein. Fish contains a lot of omega-3 fatty acids, as well as vitamins D and B (riboflavin). The daily consumption of contaminated food, especially fish, is among the primary cause of heavy metals pollution to human health. The aim of the research was to determine the concentration of heavy metals in selected species of fish from the Gulf of Guinea at James Town in Ghana. In tandem with the study's objective, samples of different forms of fish, Cassava fish, Flatfish, Redfish, Kingfish, and Silverfish, and sediment were obtained and analyzed for the presence of heavy metals using atomic absorption spectrometer (PerkinElmer®, PinAAcle 900T). The analysis indicated a high concentration of Pb, Cd, and Cr concentrations in fish gills, muscles, and sediment. High lead concentration in Silverfish gills (5.9 mg/kg) and Flatfish gills (2.29 mg/kg) above WHO levels. Cadmium was found in all fish species and sediment except Kingfish. Chromium concentrations were high n Cassava fish (3.10 mg/kg) and Silverfish (4.01 mg/kg) and copper concentrations were absent in the fish species. Arsenic and mercury were also not detected in all fish species and sediment. Manganese concentrations were found in fish and sediment. High cadmium target hazard quotient (0.17-11.60 for adults and 0.24 to 16.24 for children) and cancer risk (0.00-0.04) values in fish samples indicated potential health concerns. The Hazard Index (HI) for the analyzed samples ranged from 0.00 to 12.48 for adults and 0.00 to 17.47 for children. The study suggests that eliminating pollution and other sources of waterbody pollution is crucial to protecting the marine environment and the health of seafood consumers.

This study aimed to optimise metal extraction from secondary hazardous sources, such as basic oxygen steelmaking dust (BOS-D). Initially, three batch systems approaches, including bioleaching using , chemical leaching using choline chloride-ethylene glycol (ChCl-EG) and a combined approach were compared. Then, scaling up was evaluated through a semi-continuous bioleaching column system with varied leachate recirculation over 21 days, focusing on Y, Ce, Nd, Li, Co, Cu, Zn, Mn, and Al. Bioleaching outperformed the control experiments within 3 days in the batch, demonstrating the key role of . Chemical leaching conducted with a solid concentration of 12.5 % (w/v) successfully dissolved over 50 % of all metals within 2 h. For rare earth elements (REE), both bioleaching and hybrid leaching outperformed chemical leaching. However, considering factors such as process duration, overall efficiency, and ease of extraction, chemical leaching was the most effective method. Leachate recirculation reached a plateau after 11 days, resulting in extraction efficiency of 39 % when semi-continuous column set-up was used. Interestingly, variations in recirculation rates did not influence the extraction efficiency. Overall, this study emphasizes the considerable potential of bioleaching for metal recovery, but also highlights the need for further studies for enhancing permeability for percolation methods and optimisation, particularly in parameters such as aeration rate, when transitioning to larger scale systems.

Advancements in monitoring and operation of aquaculture environments has minimized the concentrations of some residual pollutants in cultured aquatic products. However, currently most aquatic products are "farmed", and relationships among residual pollutants in tissues of crabs were still unclear. In this study, 64 typical pollutants, including 25 antibiotics, 15 metal, 23 organochlorine pesticides, and one dioxin-like compound inducing hydrocarbon-receptor (AHR) activity were measured in Chinese mitten crab () risks of consumption assessed and ranked. The superposition of properties including severity and relative potency of effects and parameters describing persistence and exposure along with rates of usage and identification of groups most likely to be exposed were assessed in combination to rank likelihood of dietary exposure and probabilities of adverse effects for each contaminant. The results indicated that the total scores per pollutants found that Cadmium (Cd), Heptachlor epoxide (HEPE), dioxin TEQ exhibited the greatest scores and explained the severity of dietary risk, while source analysis found that the three main pollutants resulted from the ambient environment and are not due to specific aquaculture processes. In summary, environment is still the predominant source of residual pollutants in cultured Chinese mitten crab across China.

Review
Ultrasmall nanoparticles have a diameter between 1 and 3 nm at the border between nanoparticles and large molecules. Usually, their core consists of a metal, and the shell of a capping ligand with sulfur or phosphorus as binding atoms. While the core structure can be probed by electron microscopy, electron and powder diffraction, and single-crystal structure analysis for atom-sharp clusters, it is more difficult to analyze the ligand shell. In contrast to larger nanoparticles, ultrasmall nanoparticles cause only a moderate distortion of the NMR signal, making NMR spectroscopy a qualitative as well as a quantitative probe to assess the nature of the ligand shell. The application of isotope-labelled ligands and of two-dimensional NMR techniques can give deeper insight into ligand-nanoparticle interactions. Applications of one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy to analyze ultrasmall nanoparticles are presented with suitable examples, including a critical discussion of the limitations of NMR spectroscopy on nanoparticles.

Vanadium dioxide (VO) is a strongly correlated material that exhibits the insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) near room temperature, which makes it a promising candidate for applications in nanophotonics or optoelectronics. However, creating VO nanostructures with the desired functionality can be challenging due to microscopic inhomogeneities that can significantly impact the local optical and electronic properties. Thin lamellas, produced by focused ion beam milling from a homogeneous layer, provide a useful prototype for studying VO at the truly microscopic level using a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). High-resolution imaging is used to identify structural inhomogeneities while electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) supported by statistical analysis helps to detect V O stoichiometries with a reduced oxidation number of vanadium at the areas of thickness below 70 nm. On the other hand, the thicker areas are dominated by vanadium dioxide, where the signatures of the IMT are detected in both core-loss and low-loss EELS experiments with heating. The experimental results are interpreted with and semi-classical calculations. This work shows that structural inhomogeneities such as pores and cracks present no harm to the desired optical properties of VO samples.

Metal oxides with hollow porous structures are attractive and promising anode candidates for Li-ion batteries due to their high surface area, high loading capacity, and low density. In this work, hierarchical hollow porous structures of nickel (Ni)-doped λ-MnO were prepared a facile, and cost-effective approach, where different amounts of Ni were introduced into MnO structures to tailor their physical and chemical properties. When the prepared Ni-doped MnO hollow structures were studied as anode materials for Li-ion batteries, the electrode showed excellent electrochemical properties, such as stable cyclability and admirable rate capability. Moreover, Ni doping significantly enhances the diffusion properties of the active materials. The material was also investigated as an anode in another high power and energy Li-ion storage device, namely, a Li-ion hybrid capacitor, which exhibited excellent comprehensive electrochemical performance in terms of good specific cell capacity of 25 mA h g at a high current density of 5 A g and achieved a maximum power density of 29 W kg (with energy density of 30 W h kg) with a long cycle life. These results indicate that the Ni-doped MnO is suitable for application as an anode material and give considerable insight into future Li-energy storage applications.

Burns represent a prevalent global health concern and are particularly susceptible to bacterial infections. Severe infections may lead to serious complications, posing a life-threatening risk. Near-infrared (NIR)-assisted photothermal antibacterial combined with antioxidant hydrogel has shown significant potential in the healing of infected wounds. However, existing photothermal agents are typically metal-based, complicated to synthesize, or pose biosafety hazards. In this study, we utilized plant-derived blackcurrant extract (B) as a natural source for both photothermal and antioxidant properties. By incorporating B into a G-O hydrogel crosslinked through Schiff base reaction between gelatin (G) and oxidized pullulan (O), the resulting G--B hydrogel exhibited good injectability and biocompatibility along with robust photothermal and antioxidant activities. Upon NIR irradiation, the controlled temperature (around 45-50 °C) generated by the G--B hydrogel resulted in rapid (10 min) and efficient killing of (99 %), (98 %), and (82 %). Furthermore, the G--B hydrogel containing 0.5 % blackcurrant extract promoted collagen deposition, angiogenesis, and accelerated burn wound closure conclusively, demonstrating that this well-designed and extract-contained hydrogel dressing holds immense potential for enhancing the healing process of bacterial-infected burn wounds.

Water pollution caused by chromium released from tannery is a serious concern to the environment and public health. Chromium removal from tannery effluent is a crying need before discharging to the surface water. In this study, acrylic acid-grafted sawdust was prepared by Tectona grandis sawdust grafting with acrylic acid employing gamma irradiation in the presence of air and Mohr's salt. It was treated with NaOH and the characterization of surface morphology and functional groups of modified sawdust was studied by SEM and FTIR.. The effects of solution pH, adsorbent dosage, adsorption time, and initial Cr(III) ion concentration were investigated by batch sorption studies. The process was found to be pH, temperature and concentration dependent. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were applied to realize the adsorption process in depth, and it was found that the Langmuir isotherm model fitted well with experimental data (R value of 0.983). The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of acrylic acid-grafted sawdust for Cr(III) from aquous solution was found to be 21.55 mg g at 25 °C. Pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were employed to analyze the kinetics of the process, and it was found that the experimental process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, i.e. chemisorption. This study revealed that acrylic acid-grafted sawdust has a decent potential for the removal of Cr(III) from tannery effluents.

In this study, we discuss for the first time the relationships between the diversity of the bacterial population and of the metals and metalloids concentrations in the sediments of the Red River Delta, Vietnam. The analysis of the 16S rRNA by the Illumina technology revealed a diversified population and a potential of bioremediation by the microorganisms, notably by the relatively abundant in the Bach Dang estuary, where high metals and metalloids concentrations were highlighted. This work offers new information on the environmental context of the delta and highlights the potential impact that metals and metalloids may have on the bacterial population. Further investigations on the role of the bacteria in the biogeochemistry of this ecosystem will be of interest for the development of bioremediation processes.
