This study presents fibers based on methacrylic acid-methyl methacrylate (Eudragit L100) as Cu(II) adsorbents, resulting in antimicrobial complexes. Eudragit L100, an anionic copolymer synthesized by radical polymerization, was electrospun in dimethylformamide (DMF) and ethanol (EtOH). The electrospinning process was optimized through a 2-factorial design, with independent variables (copolymer concentration and EtOH/DMF volume ratio) and three repetitions at the central point. The smallest average fiber diameter (259 ± 53 nm) was obtained at 14% / Eudragit L100 and 80/20 EtOH/DMF volume ratio. The fibers were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflectance mode (FTIR-ATR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The pseudo-second-order mechanism explained the kinetic adsorption toward Cu(II). The fibers exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity (q) of 43.70 mg/g. The DSC analysis confirmed the Cu(II) absorption, indicating complexation between metallic ions and copolymer networks. The complexed fibers showed a lower degree of swelling than the non-complexed fibers. The complexed fibers exhibited bacteriostatic activity against Gram-negative () and Gram-positive () bacteria. This study successfully optimized the electrospinning process to produce thin fibers based on Eudragit L100 for potential applications as adsorbents for Cu(II) ions in aqueous media and for controlling bacterial growth.

The current article reports the investigation of three new Ni(II) complexes with -donor dithiocarbazate ligands: [Ni(L)PPh] (), [Ni(L)PPh] (), and [Ni(L)Py] (). Single-crystal X-ray analyses revealed mononuclear complexes with a distorted square planar geometry and the metal centers coordinated with a doubly deprotonated dithiocarbazate ligand and coligand pyridine or triphenylphosphine. The non-covalent interactions were investigated by the Hirshfeld surface and the results revealed that the strongest interactions were π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions and non-classical hydrogen bonds C-H···H and C-H···N. Physicochemical and spectroscopic methods indicate the same structures in the solid state and solution. The toxicity effects of the free ligands and Ni(II) complexes were tested on the human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 and non-malignant breast epithelial cell line MCF-10A. The half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC) values, indicating that the compounds were potent in inhibiting cell growth, were obtained for both cell lines at three distinct time points. While inhibitory effects were evident in both malignant and non-malignant cells, all three complexes demonstrated lower IC values for malignant breast cell lines than their non-malignant counterparts, suggesting a stronger impact on cancerous cell lines. Furthermore, molecular docking studies were performed showing the complex () as a promising candidate for further therapeutic exploration.

2,6-pyridine dicarboxylic acid (DPA) is an exceptional biomarker of notorious anthrax spores. Therefore, the rapid, sensitive, and selective quantitative detection of DPA is extremely significant and urgent. This paper reports a Zn(II) metal-organic framework with the formula of {[Zn(NDA)(DPBT)] 2HO·3DMF} (MOF-1), which consists of 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (2,6-NDA), 4,7-di(4-pyridyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (DPBT), and Zn(II) ions. Structural analysis indicated that MOF-1 is a three-dimensional (3D) network which crystallized in the monoclinic system with the 2/c space group, revealing high pH, solvent, and thermal stability. Luminescence sensing studies demonstrated that MOF-1 had the potential to be a highly selective, sensitive, and recyclable fluorescence sensor for the identification of DPA. Furthermore, fluorescent test paper was made to detect DPA promptly with color changes. The enhancement mechanism was established by the hydrogen-bonding interaction and photoinduced electron transfer transition between MOF-1 and DPA molecules.

Cobalt(III) compounds with tetradentate ligands have been widely employed to deliver cytotoxic and imaging agents into cells. A large body of work has focused on using cobalt(III)-cyclam scaffolds for this purpose. Here, we investigate the cytotoxic properties of cobalt(III) complexes containing 14-membered macrocycles related to cyclam. A breast cancer stem cell (CSC) in vitro model was used to gauge efficacy. Specifically, [Co(1,4,7,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane)Cl] () and [Co(1-oxa-4,8,12-triazacyclotetradecane)Cl] () were synthesised and characterised, and their breast CSC activity was determined. The cobalt(III) complexes and displayed micromolar potency towards bulk breast cancer cells and breast CSCs grown in monolayers. Notably, and displayed selective potency towards breast CSCs over bulk breast cancer cells (up to 4.5-fold), which was similar to salinomycin (an established breast CSC-selective agent). The cobalt(III) complexes and were also able to inhibit mammosphere formation at low micromolar doses (with respect to size and number). The mammopshere inhibitory effect of was similar to that of salinomycin. Our studies show that cobalt(III) complexes with 1,4,7,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane and 1-oxa-4,8,12-triazacyclotetradecane macrocycles could be useful starting points for the development of new cobalt-based delivery systems that can transport cytotoxic and imaging agents into breast CSCs.

The growth of , a member of the genus, which plays a crucial role in the bacterial microbiome of the gut, is significantly influenced by manganese ions. They can be safely delivered to the intestines by exploiting the chelating abilities of lactoferrin. The aim of this work was to encapsulate lactoferrin saturated with manganese ions (MnLf) in a system based on the Eudragit RS polymer to protect protein from degradation and manganese release in the gastric environment. The entrapment efficiency was satisfactory, reaching about 95%, and most importantly, manganese ions were not released during microparticles (MPs) formation. The release profile of the protein from the freshly prepared MPs was sustained, with less than 15% of the protein released within the first hour. To achieve similar protein release efficiency, freeze-drying was carried out in the presence of 10% (/) mannitol as a cryoprotectant for MPs frozen at -20 °C. MPs with encapsulated MnLf exhibited prebiotic activity towards . More importantly, the presence of equivalent levels of manganese ions in free form in the medium, as well as chelating by lactoferrin encapsulated in MPs, had a similar impact on stimulating bacterial growth. This indicates that the bioavailability of manganese ions in our prepared system is very good.

Industrialization has brought many environmental problems since its expansion, including heavy metal contamination in water used for agricultural irrigation. This research uses microbial fuel cell technology to generate bioelectricity and remove arsenic, copper, and iron, using contaminated agricultural water as a substrate and as a biocatalyst. The results obtained for electrical potential and current were 0.798 V and 3.519 mA, respectively, on the sixth day of operation and the pH value was 6.54 with an EC equal to 198.72 mS/cm, with a removal of 99.08, 56.08, and 91.39% of the concentrations of As, Cu, and Fe, respectively, obtained in 72 h. Likewise, total nitrogen concentrations, organic carbon, loss on ignition, dissolved organic carbon, and chemical oxygen demand were reduced by 69.047, 86.922, 85.378, 88.458, and 90.771%, respectively. At the same time, the PD shown was 376.20 ± 15.478 mW/cm, with a calculated internal resistance of 42.550 ± 12.353 Ω. This technique presents an essential advance in overcoming existing technical barriers because the engineered microbial fuel cells are accessible and scalable. It will generate important value by naturally reducing toxic metals and electrical energy, producing electric currents in a sustainable and affordable way.

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for human physiological metabolism. The application of organic Se as a source to cultivate Se-rich plants for micronutrient supplementation has been receiving increasing attention. In our study, a bacterial strain named H1 was isolated from the soil in Heilongjiang Province, China, and under optimal culture conditions, the unit Se content could reach 3000 μg·g and its 16S ribosomal DNA sequence seemed to be a new molecular record of an species. After the domestication of Se tolerance and Se-rich experiments, H1 can be used as a Se source for cultivation of Se-rich . The results showed that soluble protein, soluble sugar, free amino acid and vitamin C contents in were notably increased by 28.7%, 21.8%, 32.5% and 39.2% under the treatment of Se concentration of 0.24 mg·kg, respectively. These findings enhance our understanding that H1 is more conducive to Se uptake and nutrient accumulation.

: Micronutrient (MN) supplementation has a positive impact on clinical outcomes. However, the evidence for the impact of MN supplementation remains controversial. Therefore, our study aims to assess the impact on nutritional outcomes according to exploring the implementation of MN support with multidisciplinary collaboration. : This retrospective cohort study was conducted at a university hospital in Incheon, Korea. All patients referred to a nutrition support team (NST) between July and November 2022 were included. The NST reviews the MN protocol, which includes multivitamins and trace elements, based on international nutrient guidelines. All patients who were on nothing per oral and did not meet ≥70% of their nutritional requirements within 1 week were recommended MN supplements. Compliance with the MN protocol was evaluated, alterations in nutritional status based on the Nutrition Risk Screening 2002 (NRS 2002) scoring system and clinical outcomes were assessed after 7 day and at discharge. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with high nutritional risk in discharged patients. In addition, a sub-analysis was performed on changes in the nutritional of patients on the ward and in the ICU. : A total of 255 patients were eligible for analysis, with many patients requiring an MN supply of nothing per oral. The rate of implementation of MN supplementation was 50.2%. The findings indicate a significant decrease in the NRS 2002 score in the good compliance group with MN supplementation. No significant differences in protocol compliance were observed in terms of mortality, hospital stay, or length of stay in the intensive care unit. However, bad compliance with MN supplementation was correlated with risk factors for malnutrition at discharge. In subgroup analysis, nutritional status in the ICU and wards improved, with a significant difference between the two groups. : The implementation of a MN supplementation protocol by a multidisciplinary NST is a feasible approach for improving the nutritional status of inpatients. Ensuring high compliance with this protocol is crucial, as poor compliance has been identified as a risk factor for malnutrition at discharge. Active intervention by the NST is essential to achieve optimal nutritional outcomes.

Influence of Biomarkers on Mortality among Patients with Hepatic Metastasis of Colorectal Cancer Treated with FOLFOX/CAPOX and FOLFIRI/CAPIRI, Including Anti-EGFR and Anti-VEGF Therapies.
Colorectal cancer is a major global health concern, with a significant increase in morbidity and mortality rates associated with metastatic stages. This study investigates the prognostic significance of various clinical and laboratory parameters in patients with metastatic CRC. A retrospective cohort of 188 CRC patients with hepatic metastasis from the OncoHelp Association in Timisoara was analyzed from January 2016 to March 2023. Data on demographics, clinical characteristics, and biomarkers, such as lymphocyte counts, as well as various inflammation indices, were examined. Statistical analyses included univariate and multivariate logistic regression, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, and ROC curve assessments. Our findings indicate significant associations between survival outcomes and several biomarkers. Higher BMI and lymphocyte counts were linked with better survival rates, while higher values of Neutrophil-Hemoglobin-Lymphocyte (NHL) score, Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), Platelet-Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR), and Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII) were predictors of poorer outcomes. Notably, the presence of hepatic metastasis at diagnosis was a critical factor, significantly reducing overall survival. The study has expanded the current understanding of prognostic factors in CRC, advocating for a multi-dimensional approach to prognostic evaluations. This approach should consider not only the traditional metrics such as tumor stage and histological grading but also incorporate a broader spectrum of biomarkers. Future studies should aim to validate these findings and explore the integration of these biomarkers into routine clinical practice, enhancing the precision of prognostic assessments and ultimately guiding more personalized treatment strategies for CRC patients.

: Iodinated Contrast Media (ICM) is used daily in many imaging departments worldwide. The main risk associated with ICM is hypersensitivity. When a severe hypersensitivity reaction is not properly managed and treated swiftly, it may be fatal. Currently, there is no data to demonstrate how ICM sensitivity affects the prognosis of cardiac patients, especially those diagnosed with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), in whom urgent coronary angiography is indicated. This study aimed to identify and characterize this relationship. : We included patients hospitalized with STEMI between 2016 and 2019 from the National Inpatient Sample. The population was compared based on ICM sensitivity status, sensitive vs. non-sensitive. The primary endpoint was in-hospital mortality, with additional endpoints: length of stay and in-hospital complications. : The study included 664,620 STEMI patients, of whom 4905 (0.7%) were diagnosed with ICM sensitivity. ICM-sensitive patients were older, more often white, females, and had more comorbidities and cardiovascular risk factors. Both groups show similarities in management but are slightly less probable to undergo PCI or CABG. Multivariable logistic regression models found that the ICM-sensitive population had similar odds of in-hospital mortality (OR: 1.02, 95% CI: 0.89-1.16) and MACCE (OR: 1.05, 95% CI: 0.95-1.16), and less major bleeding (OR: 0.73, 95% CI: 0.60-0.87). : Our study found that ICM sensitivity status was not a significant factor for worse prognosis in patients hospitalized with STEMI.
