Elbow arthroplasty is increasing in popularity and can be used to treat many conditions, such as trauma, primary and secondary osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, and osteonecrosis. Total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) is reserved for patients with severe symptoms refractory to more conservative management. In addition to TEA, hemi-arthroplasty, interposition arthroplasty, and resection arthroplasty also play roles in the management of elbow pain. There are specific indications for each type of arthroplasty. Postoperative complications may occur with elbow arthroplasties and may be surgery or hardware related. Imaging is important in both pre-operative planning as well as in post-surgical follow-up. This article reviews the different types of elbow arthroplasties, their indications, their normal postoperative imaging appearances, and imaging findings of potential complications.

OBJECTIVE
To explore the efficacy and potential mechanism of Fengshi Gutong capsule (FSGTC) in osteoarthritis (OA) inflammation.
METHODS
The impact of FSGTC on laboratory indicators of OA patients was explored using data mining technology and association rule analysis. Then, the OA cell model was constructed by inducing chondrocytes (CHs) with interleukin-1β (IL-1β). In the presence of FSGTC intervention, the regulatory mechanism of PACER/COX2/PGE2 in OA-CH viability and inflammatory responses was evaluated.
RESULTS
Retrospective data mining showed that FSGTC effectively reduced inflammation indexes (ESR, HCRP) of OA patients. Cell experiments showed that LncRNA PACER (PACER) silencing inhibited the proliferation activity of OA-CHs, increased the level of COX2 protein, elevated the levels of PGE2, TNF-α, and IL-1β, and decreased the levels of IL-4 and IL-10 (p < .01). On the contrary, FSGTC-containing serum reversed the effect of PACER silencing on OA-CHs (p < .01). After the addition of COX2 pathway inhibitor, the proliferation activity of OA-CHs was enhanced; the levels of PGE2, TNF-α, and IL-1β were decreased while the levels of IL-4 and IL-10 were increased (p < .01).
CONCLUSION
FSGTC inhibits IL-1β-induced inflammation in CHs and ameliorates OA by upregulating PACER and downregulating COX2/PGE2.

Men with writing proficiency enjoyed a privileged position in ancient Egyptian society in the third millennium BC. Research focusing on these officials of elevated social status ("scribes") usually concentrates on their titles, scribal statues, iconography, etc., but the individuals themselves, and their skeletal remains, have been neglected. The aim of this study is to reveal whether repetitive tasks and maintained postures related to scribal activity can manifest in skeletal changes and identify possible occupational risk factors. A total of 1767 items including entheseal changes, non-metric traits, and degenerative changes were recorded from the human remains of 69 adult males of well-defined social status categories from the necropolis at Abusir (2700-2180 BC). Statistically significant differences between the scribes and the reference group attested a higher incidence of changes in scribes and manifested themselves especially in the occurrence of osteoarthritis of the joints. Our research reveals that remaining in a cross-legged sitting or kneeling position for extended periods, and the repetitive tasks related to writing and the adjusting of the rush pens during scribal activity, caused the extreme overloading of the jaw, neck and shoulder regions.

OBJECTIVES
The present study aimed to elucidate the pathogenesis of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) in a mouse model. We investigated morphological and histological changes in the head of mandible cartilage and early immunohistochemical (IHC) changes in transforming growth factor (TGF)-β, phosphorylated Smad-2/3 (p-Smad2/3), a TGF-β signaling molecule, and asporin.
METHODS
TMJ-OA was induced in a mouse model through unilateral partial discectomy. Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and safranin-O staining were performed to morphologically and histologically evaluate the degeneration of the head of mandible caused by TMJ-OA. IHC staining for TGF-β, p-Smad2/3, and asporin was performed to evaluate the changes in protein expression.
RESULTS
In the experimental group, three-dimensional (3D) morphometry revealed an enlarged head of mandible and safranin-O staining showed degeneration of cartilage tissue in the early stages of TMJ-OA compared to the control group. IHC staining revealed that TGF-β, p-Smad2/3, and asporin expression increased in the head of mandible cartilage before the degeneration of cartilage tissue, and subsequently decreased for a short period.
CONCLUSION
The findings suggested a negative feedback relationship between the expression of asporin and the TGF-β/Smad transduction pathway, which may be involved in the degeneration of the head of mandible in the early stages of TMJ-OA. Asporin is a potential biomarker of the early stages of TMJ-OA, which ultimately leads to the irreversible degeneration of TMJ tissues.

Evaluate whether total elbow replacement (TER) through a lateral approach is accurate and stable.
ANIMALS
12 skeletally mature large-breed dog cadavers were used.
METHODS
Limb alignment, elbow joint motion, and collateral ligament laxity were evaluated preoperatively. The order of surgery (left or right) and the approach (lateral or medial) were randomly selected for TER in each dog. The other approach was used in the contralateral elbow. Intraoperative technical difficulties, duration of surgery, and anatomic complications were recorded. Limb alignment, elbow joint motion, collateral ligament laxity, and prosthetic component alignment were evaluated after surgery. Data were collected from June 11 to 15, 2023.
RESULTS
The duration of surgery using a lateral or medial approach did not differ (P = .499). Anatomic complications were not observed. The lateral approach resulted in 8° more elbow extension (P = .003), 1.58° less lateral collateral ligament constraint (P = .033), 2.80° less medial collateral ligament constraint (P = .002), 4.38° less frontal plane constraint (P = .004), 8° greater humeral component inclination (P = .033), and 5.6° greater radioulnar component varus (P = .001) than the medial approach. Varus of the radius, mechanical axis deviation, limb supination, elbow flexion, mediolateral humeral component and craniocaudal radioulnar component orientation did not differ among joints operated using a lateral or medial approach. In normal cadaveric elbows, a lateral approach for TER appears feasible, producing equivalent limb alignment, joint laxity, and joint motion to normal elbows and to TER placed using a medial approach.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE
In dogs, TER can be performed using a lateral surgical approach.

BACKGROUND
The Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) evaluates the development and progression of osteoarthritis. Frailty captures the heterogeneity in aging. Use of this resource-intensive dataset to answer aging-related research questions could be enhanced by a frailty measure.
OBJECTIVE
To: (i) develop a deficit accumulation frailty index (FI) for the OAI; (ii) examine its relationship with age and compare between sexes, (iii) validate the FI versus all-cause mortality and (iv) compare this association with mortality with a modified frailty phenotype.
DESIGN
OAI cohort study.
SETTING
North America.
SUBJECTS
An FI was determined for 4,755/4,796 and 4,149/4,796 who had a valid FI and frailty phenotype.
METHODS
Fifty-nine-variables were screened for inclusion. Multivariate Cox regression evaluated the impact of FI or phenotype on all-cause mortality at follow-up (up to 146 months), controlling for age and sex.
RESULTS
Thirty-one items were included. FI scores (0.16 ± 0.09) were higher in older adults and among females (both, P < 0.001). By follow-up, 264 people had died (6.4%). Older age, being male, and greater FI were associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality (all, P < 0.001). The model including FI was a better fit than the model including the phenotype (AIC: 4,167 vs. 4,178) and was a better predictor of all-cause mortality than the phenotype with an area under receiver operating characteristic curve: 0.652 vs. 0.581.
CONCLUSION
We developed an FI using the OAI and validated it in relation to all-cause mortality. The FI may be used to study aging on clinical, functional and structural aspects of osteoarthritis included in the OAI.

BACKGROUND
Body weight has been recognized as a driving factor of osteoarthritis. Few studies had investigated the association between weight status across adulthood and risk of osteoarthritis (OA). This study investigates the association of weight change patterns across adulthood (lasting at least 25 years) with the risk of OA from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013-2018.
METHODS
The study assessed the relationship between weight change across adulthood and OA in 7392 individuals aged > 50 spanning a minimum of 25 years. Multivariate linear regression analyses were utilized to detect the association between weight change patterns and self-reported OA. Restricted cubic splines (RCS) were used to examine the nonlinear relationship between absolute weight change and OA risk.
RESULTS
From 10 years ago to survey, the risk of OA was 1.34-fold (95% CI 1.07-1.68) in people changed from obese to non-obese, 1.61-fold (95% CI 1.29-2.00) in people change from non-obese to obese, and 1.82-fold (95% CI 1.49-2.22) in stable obese people compared with people who were at stable normal weight. Similar patterns were also observed at age 25 years to baseline and age 25 years to 10 years before the baseline. The dose-response association of RCS found a U-shaped relationship between absolute weight change and OA risk.
CONCLUSIONS
The study suggests that weight patterns across adulthood are associated with the risk of OA. These findings stressed important to maintain a normal weight throughout adulthood, especially to prevent ignored weight gain in early adulthood to reduce OA risk later.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to assess the content, construct, and discriminative validity and responsiveness of the Patient-Specific Functional Scale (PSFS) in patients with thumb carpometacarpal arthritis.
METHODS
Data were collected at Xpert Clinics, comprising 34 outpatient hand surgery and hand therapy clinics in the Netherlands. We included 267 patients for content validity and 323 patients for construct validity and responsiveness. The PSFS items were classified into the International Classification of Function Core Set for Hand Conditions to assess content validity. We used hypothesis testing to investigate the construct validity and responsiveness. The Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire was used as a comparator instrument. The standardized response mean was calculated to evaluate the magnitude of change. For discriminative validity, we used independent t tests to discriminate between satisfied and dissatisfied patients.
RESULTS
We classified 98% of the PSFS items in the International Classification of Function "activities" and "participation" domains, indicating good content validity. Two of six hypotheses for construct validity and three of six hypotheses for responsiveness were confirmed. The standardized response mean for the PSFS was 0.57 (0.46-0.68) and 0.47 (0.35-0.58) for the Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire total score. The mean PSFS score showed good discriminative validity because it could distinguish between satisfied and dissatisfied patients at the 3-month follow-up.
CONCLUSIONS
The PSFS scores showed good content and discriminative validity in patients with first carpometacarpal arthritis. Hypothesis testing for responsiveness and construct validity indicates that the PSFS measures a unique construct different from the Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE
The PSFS may be a useful scale for measuring the patient-specific status of individuals with thumb carpometacarpal arthritis.

This study aimed to determine the function of LINC00511 in NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated chondrocyte pyroptosis via the regulation of miR-9-5p and FUT 1. Chondrocyte inflammatory injury was induced by treating chondrocytes with LPS. Afterwards, the levels of IL-1β and IL-18, the expression of NLRP3, ASC, Caspase-1, and GSDMD, cell viability, and LDH activity in chondrocytes were assessed. LINC00511 expression in LPS-treated chondrocytes was detected, and LINC00511 was subsequently silenced to analyse its role in chondrocyte pyroptosis. The subcellular localization of LINC00511 was predicted and verified. Furthermore, the binding relationships between LINC00511 and miR-9-5p and between miR-9-5p and FUT1 were validated. LINC00511 regulated NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated chondrocyte pyroptosis through the miR-9-5p/FUT1 axis. LPStreated ATDC5 cells exhibited elevated levels of inflammatory injury; increased levels of NLRP3, ASC, Caspase-1, and GSDMD; reduced cell viability; increased LDH activity; and increased LINC00511 expression, while LINC00511 silencing inhibited the NLRP3 inflammasome to restrict LPS-induced chondrocyte pyroptosis. Next, LINC00511 sponged miR-9-5p, which targeted FUT1. Silencing LINC00511 suppressed FUT1 by upregulating miR-9-5p. Additionally, downregulation of miR-9-5p or overexpression of FUT1 neutralized the suppressive effect of LINC00511 knockdown on LPSinduced chondrocyte pyroptosis. Silencing LINC00511 inhibited the NLRP3 inflammasome to quench Caspase-1-dependent chondrocyte pyroptosis in OA by promoting miR-9-5p and downregulating FUT1.
