BACKGROUND
This review reveals the role of linear economy prevalence and mismanagement practices in plastic pollution of aquatic and terrestrial environments and related knowledge gaps in Romania while outlining downstream and upstream solutions to reduce plastic pollution and adopt circular economy strategies. Thus, the major aim of this study is the investigation of the stage of scientific knowledge concerning all these demands in the Romanian context.
METHODOLOGY
This work integrates two main approaches: (i) a bibliometric analysis fed by Web of Science and Scopus databases to reveal the current coverage of peer-reviewed literature related to plastic waste in Romania and (ii) a subject-based review to underline the main themes related to plastic waste management, plastic pollution, and mitigating options in Romania in line with circular economy principles.
RESULTS
Reducing plastic pollution requires scientific knowledge, multi-sectoral cooperation, and societal awareness. Following this, the topics of plastic waste and plastic pollution appeared to be under-investigated in the literature considering Romania as a case study and concentrated around the 2020 year, emphasizing, in this way, the trendiness of plastic waste concerns and their management in the current research landscape. Our analysis points out that: (i) Romania is facing massive plastic pollution requiring solid improvements in waste management performances; (ii) few peer-reviewed research studies are performed in Romania for both macro and microplastic concerns with unknown pollution levels in most of its geographical regions; (iii) the plastic waste management is still understudied here, while waste statistics are poorly available at local levels; (iv) the perspectives of circular economy transition are still limited, feeding the plastic pollution in the coming years.
CONCLUSIONS
Several knowledge gaps are identified and must be covered by future research such as (i) adjusting mismanaged plastic waste levels to regional waste management performances and determining littering rates in urban and rural areas to improve the plastic pollution modeling inputs; (ii) examining plastic pollution associated with landfill sites and waste imports; (iii) assessing the sectoral contributions to macro and microplastic pollution of aquatic environments related to municipalities, tourist destinations, agriculture, .; (iv) determining retention levels of plastic in river basins and role of riparian vegetation; (v) analyzing microplastics presence in all types of freshwater environments and interlinkage between macroplastic fragmentation and microplastic; (vi) assessing the plastic loads of transboundary rivers related to mismanagement practices; (vii) determining concentrations of microplastics in air, soil, and other land use ecosystems.

INTRODUCTION
At least one-third of the identified risk alleles from Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) of Alzheimer's disease (AD) are involved in lipid metabolism, lipid transport, or direct lipid binding. In fact, a common genetic variant (ε4) in a cholesterol and phospholipid transporter, Apolipoprotein E (), is the primary genetic risk factor for late-onset AD. In addition to genetic variants, lipidomic studies have reported severe metabolic dysregulation in human autopsy brain tissue, cerebrospinal fluid, blood, and multiple mouse models of AD.
METHODS
We aimed to identify an overarching metabolic pathway in lipid metabolism by integrating analyses of lipidomics and transcriptomics from the Religious Order Study and Rush Memory Aging Project (ROSMAP) using differential analysis and network correlation analysis.
RESULTS
Coordinated differences in lipids were found to be dysregulated in association with both mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and carriers. Interestingly, these correlations were weakened when adjusting for education. Indeed, the cognitively non-impaired carriers have higher education levels in the ROSMAP cohort, suggesting that this lipid signature may be associated with a resilience phenotype. Network correlation analysis identified multiple differential lipids within a single module that are substrates and products in the Lands Cycle for acyl chain remodeling. In addition, our analyses identified multiple genes in the Lands Cycle acyl chain remodeling pathway, which were associated with cognitive decline independent of amyloid-β (Aβ) load and tau tangle pathologies.
DISCUSSION
Our studies highlight the critical differences in acyl chain remodeling in brain tissue from carriers and individual non-carriers with MCI. A coordinated lipid profile shift in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex from both carriers and MCI suggests differences in lipid metabolism occur early in disease stage and highlights lipid homeostasis as a tractable target for early disease modifying intervention.

INTRODUCTION
Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is associated with immune complications and endothelial dysfunction due to intricate donor-recipient interactions, conditioning regimens, and inflammatory responses.
METHODS
This study investigated the role of the complement system during HSCT and its interaction with the cytokine network. Seventeen acute myeloid leukemia patients undergoing HSCT were monitored, including blood sampling from the start of the conditioning regimen until four weeks post-transplant. Clinical follow-up was 200 days.
RESULTS
Total complement functional activity was measured by WIELISA and the degree of complement activation by ELISA measurement of sC5b-9. Cytokine release was measured using a 27-multiplex immuno-assay. At all time-points during HSCT complement functional activity remained comparable to healthy controls. Complement activation was continuously stable except for two patients demonstrating increased activation, consistent with severe endotheliopathy and infections. experiments with post-HSCT whole blood challenged with , revealed a hyperinflammatory cytokine response with increased TNF, IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-8 formation. Complement C3 inhibition markedly reduced the cytokine response induced by , , and cholesterol crystals.
DISCUSSION
In conclusion, HSCT patients generally retained a fully functional complement system, whereas activation occurred in patients with severe complications. The complement-cytokine interaction indicates the potential for new complement-targeting therapeutic strategies in HSCT.

TRIM21 is a pivotal effector in the immune system, orchestrating antibody-mediated responses and modulating immune signaling. In this comprehensive study, we focus on the interaction of TRIM21 with Fc engineered antibodies and subsequent implications for viral neutralization. Through a series of analytical techniques, including biosensor assays, mass photometry, and electron microscopy, along with structure predictions, we unravel the intricate mechanisms governing the interplay between TRIM21 and antibodies. Our investigations reveal that the TRIM21 capacity to recognize, bind, and facilitate the proteasomal degradation of antibody-coated viruses is critically dependent on the affinity and avidity interplay of its interactions with antibody Fc regions. We suggest a novel binding mechanism, where TRIM21 binding to one Fc site results in the detachment of PRYSPRY from the coiled-coil domain, enhancing mobility due to its flexible linker, thereby facilitating the engagement of the second site, resulting in avidity due to bivalent engagement. These findings shed light on the dual role of TRIM21 in antiviral immunity, both in recognizing and directing viruses for intracellular degradation, and demonstrate its potential for therapeutic exploitation. The study advances our understanding of intracellular immune responses and opens new avenues for the development of antiviral strategies and innovation in tailored effector functions designed to leverage TRIM21s unique binding mode.

BACKGROUND
In schizophrenia patients, spontaneous speech production has been hypothesized as correlating with right hemispheric activation, including the inferior frontal and superior temporal gyri as speech-relevant areas. However, robust evidence for this association is still missing. The aim of the present fMRI study is to examine BOLD signal changes during natural, fluent speech production in patients with schizophrenia in the chronic phase of their disease.
METHODS
Using a case-control design, the study included 15 right-handed patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders as well as 15 healthy controls. The participants described eight pictures from the Thematic Apperception Test for 1 min each, while BOLD signal changes were measured with 3T fMRI. The occurrence of positive and negative formal thought disorders was determined using standardized psychopathological assessments.
RESULTS
We found significant BOLD signal changes during spontaneous speech production in schizophrenia patients compared to healthy controls, particularly in the right hemispheric network. A analysis showed that this right-hemispheric lateralization was mainly driven by activation during experimental rests. Furthermore, the TLI sum value in patients correlated negatively with BOLD signal changes in the right Rolandic operculum.
CONCLUSIONS
Possible underlying factors for this inverse right-hemispheric lateralization of speech-associated areas are structural changes and transmitter system alterations, as well as a lack of neural downregulation in schizophrenia patients during rest periods due to dysfunctional executive functions. When examining spontaneous speech as the most natural form of language, other influencing factors, such as social cognition or emotional processing, should be considered. Our results indicate that future studies should consider group differences during rest, which might provide additional information typically covered in differential contrasts.

OBJECTIVE
Facial emotion recognition (FER) is a fundamental social skill essential for adaptive social behaviors, emotional development, and overall well-being. FER impairments have been linked to various mental disorders, making it a critical transdiagnostic mechanism influencing the development and trajectory of mental disorders. FER has also been found to play a role in the transgenerational transmission of mental disorders, with the majority of research suggesting FER impairments in children of parents with a mental illness (COPMI). Previous research primarily concentrated on COPMI of parents with internalizing disorders, which does not cover the full spectrum of outpatient mental health service populations. Furthermore, research focuses on varying components of FER by using different assessment paradigms, making it challenging to compare study results. To address these gaps, we comprehensively investigated FER abilities in COPMI using multiple tasks varying in task characteristics.
METHODS
We included 189 children, 77 COPMI and 112 children of parents without a diagnosed mental illness (COPWMI), aged 6 to 16 years. We assessed FER using three tasks with varying task demands: an emotional Go/NoGo task, a morphing task, and a task presenting short video sequences depicting different emotions. We fitted separate two-level hierarchical Bayesian models (to account for sibling pairs in our sample) for reaction times and accuracy rates for each task. Good model fit was assured by comparing models using varying priors.
RESULTS
Contrary to our expectations, our results revealed no general FER deficit in COPMI compared to COPWMI. The Bayesian models fitted for accuracy in the morphing task and Go/NoGo task yielded small yet significant effects. However, Bayes factors fitted for the models suggested that these effects could be due to random variations or noise in the data.
CONCLUSIONS
Our study does not support FER impairments as a general feature of COPMI. Instead, individual factors, such as the type of parental disorder and the timing of its onset, may play a crucial role in influencing FER development. Future research should consider these factors, taking into account the diverse landscape of parental mental disorders.

Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) is an emerging public health concern; effective treatments are still under development. This mini-review focuses on summarizing the main scientific evidence from psychological, pharmacological, brain imaging, and emerging treatment approaches for IGD. We searched PubMed and Scopus databases using keywords related to IGD and treatment. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most extensively researched psychological treatment for IGD, supported by several randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Other promising approaches include mindfulness, relapse prevention, abstinence protocols, and family therapy. Pharmacological treatments like bupropion and escitalopram have shown benefits, especially when IGD is comorbid with conditions like major depressive disorder. However, the quality of evidence is moderate for psychological interventions but low to moderate for pharmacological approaches. Emerging treatments such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), and electro-acupuncture have demonstrated efficacy in reducing IGD symptoms and modulating brain activity. Brain imaging techniques like functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have provided insights into the neural mechanisms underlying IGD and treatment effects, although these studies lack randomized controlled designs. While multimodal approaches show promise, larger, well-designed RCTs are needed to establish effective IGD treatments.

Individuals with anxiety disorders (ADs) often display hypervigilance to threat information, although this response may be less pronounced following psychotherapy. This study aims to investigate the unconscious recognition performance of facial expressions in patients with panic disorder (PD) post-treatment, shedding light on alterations in their emotional processing biases.
METHODS
Patients with PD (n=34) after (exposure-based) cognitive behavior therapy and healthy controls (n=43) performed a subliminal affective recognition task. Emotional facial expressions (fearful, happy, or mirrored) were displayed for 33 ms and backwardly masked by a neutral face. Participants completed a forced choice task to discriminate the briefly presented facial stimulus and an uncovered condition where only the neutral mask was shown. We conducted a secondary analysis to compare groups based on their four possible response types under the four stimulus conditions and examined the correlation of the false alarm rate for fear responses to non-fearful (happy, mirrored, and uncovered) stimuli with clinical anxiety symptoms.
RESULTS
The patient group showed a unique selection pattern in response to happy expressions, with significantly more correct "happy" responses compared to controls. Additionally, lower severity of anxiety symptoms after psychotherapy was associated with a decreased false fear response rate with non-threat presentations.
CONCLUSION
These data suggest that patients with PD exhibited a "happy-face recognition advantage" after psychotherapy. Less symptoms after treatment were related to a reduced fear bias. Thus, a differential facial emotion detection task could be a suitable tool to monitor response patterns and biases in individuals with ADs in the context of psychotherapy.

PURPOSE
Previous studies have reported Caspase-1 () is upregulated in mouse models of Juvenile X-linked Retinoschisis (XLRS), however no functional role for in disease progression has been identified. We performed electroretinogram (ERG) and standardized optical coherence tomography (OCT) in mice deficient in the Retinoschisin-1 () and and Caspase-11 genes (-KO ) to test the hypothesis that may play a role in disease evolution and or severity of disease. Currently, no studies have ventured to investigate the longer-term effects of on phenotypic severity and disease progression over time in XLRS, and specifically the effect on electroretinogram.
METHODS
-KO; mice were generated by breeding -KO mice with mice. OCT imaging was analyzed at 2-, 4-, and 15-16 months of age. Outer nuclear layer (ONL) thickness and adapted standardized cyst severity score were measured and averaged from 4 locations 500 μm from the optic nerve. Adapted standardized cyst severity score was 1: absent cysts, 2: <30 μm, 3: 30-49 μm, 4: 50-69 μm, 5: 70-99 μm, 6: >99 μm. Electroretinograms (ERG) were recorded in dark-adapted and light-adapted conditions at 2 and 4 months. Results obtained from -KO and -KO; eyes were compared with age matched WT control eyes at 2 months.
RESULTS
Intraretinal schisis was not observed on OCT in WT eyes, while schisis was apparent in most -KO and -KO; eyes at 2 and 4 months of age. There was no difference in the cyst severity score from 2 to 4 months of age, or ONL thickness from 2 to 16 months of age between -KO and -KO; eyes. ERG amplitudes were similarly reduced in -KO and -KO; compared to WT controls at 2 months of age, and there was no difference between KO and -KO; eyes at 2 or 4 months of age, suggesting no impact on the electrical function of photoreceptors over time in the absence of .
CONCLUSION
Although has been reported to be significantly upregulated in KO mice, our preliminary data suggest that removing does not modulate photoreceptor electrical function or alter the trajectory of the retinal architecture over time.

During the first year of life, infants start to learn the lexicon of their native language. Word learning includes the establishment of longer-term representations for the phonological form and the meaning of the word in the brain, as well as the link between them. However, it is not known how the brain processes word forms immediately after they have been learned. We familiarized 12-month-old infants (N = 52) with two pseudowords and studied their neural signatures. Specifically, we determined whether a newly learned word form elicits neural signatures similar to those observed when a known word is recognized (i.e., when a well-established word representation is activated, eliciting enhanced mismatch responses) or whether the processing of a newly learned word form shows the suppression of the neural response along with the principles of predictive coding of a learned rule (i.e., the order of the syllables of the new word form). The pattern of results obtained in the current study suggests that recognized word forms elicit a mismatch response of negative polarity, similar to newly learned and previously known words with an established representation in long-term memory. In contrast, prediction errors caused by acoustic novelty or deviation from the expected order in a sequence of (pseudo)words elicit responses of positive polarity. This suggests that electric brain activity is not fully explained by the predictive coding framework.
