BACKGROUND
To evaluate the intraindividual visual performance of a spherical and extended depth of field (EDOF) IOL used in a mix-and-match approach.
METHODS
Single centre (tertiary care centre), retrospective consecutive case series. Included patients had uneventful cataract surgery with implantation of a spherical monofocal IOL (CT Spheris 204) in the dominant eye and a diffractive EDOF IOL (AT LARA 829) in the non-dominant eye. Monocular and binocular defocus curves and visual acuity at various distances were assessed. In addition, binocular reading speed, contrast sensitivity, and patient satisfaction using QOV, Catquest 9SF, and glare/halo questionnaires are reported.
RESULTS
A total of 29 patients (58 eyes) were included. We observed significant intra-individual differences for monocular DCIVA, DCNVA, UIVA, and UNVA. There were no differences in monocular BCDVA or UDVA. The monocular defocus curves for the two IOLs significantly differed at defocus steps between -1.0 and -3.5 D. 93.10% of patients reported they would opt for the same combination of IOLs.
CONCLUSION
Excellent uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity was demonstrated in both groups. The mix-and-match approach described in this study yielded good intermediate vision and improved near vision with high-patient satisfaction.

In this study, we reported the patterns, epidemiology, and clinical features of anterior uveitis (AU) in Taiwan, an area of Eastern Asia. This prospective, cross-sectional case series study was performed to identify patients with AU at two tertiary medical centers (Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital) located at the southern Taiwan between December 1, 2018, and March 31, 2020. The clinical diagnoses, ocular presentations, and laboratory data, including the results of the aqueous polymerase chain reaction tests, were investigated in these patients. A total of 112 patients, with a mean age of 48.9 years, were included. Most patients (87.5%) presented with unilateral eye disease, with 30 cases of ocular hypertension at the first presentation (27%). The most common clinical diagnoses were idiopathic AU (37.5%), human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B27-associated acute AU (25.0%), and herpetic AU (18.8%). Among patients with herpetic AU, cytomegalovirus (CMV) was the most common pathogen (17/21, 81%). Compared to HLA-B27-associated acute AU, CMV-related AU was mostly observed in patients that were older in age, exhibited higher intraocular pressure, more keratic precipitates, greater iris atrophy, and more pseudophakia, but was least reported in those with posterior synechiae. This prospective study identified the pattern and clinical features of AU in southern Taiwan.

PURPOSE
To describe the common risk factors, complications, and management options for anterior migration of Ozurdex implant.
METHODS
A comprehensive review of the literature was performed.
RESULTS
Amongst the most common risk factors predisposing to implant anterior migration we found a history of pseudophakia or aphakia or previous vitrectomy. The most common complication is that of corneal edema.
CONCLUSIONS
A variety of management options to treat migration of the dexamethasone implant are utilized by different specialists around the world. These depend on the doctor's preference, presence of corneal damage and history of previous migrations after repositioning the implant. The most common approaches are operative or non-operative implant repositioning and surgical implant removal.

PURPOSE
To compare the prediction accuracy of toric intraocular lens calculations using estimated vs measured posterior corneal astigmatism (PCA).
DESIGN
Retrospective case series.
METHODS
A total of 110 eyes of 110 patients with uncomplicated toric intraocular lens implantation were included in this study. Predicted postoperative refractive astigmatism was calculated with the Barrett Toric Calculator using the estimated PCA (E-PCA), the measured IOLMaster 700 PCA (I-PCA), and the measured Pentacam PCA (P-PCA). Refractive astigmatism prediction errors (RA-PEs), including their trimmed (tr-) centroid (mean vector), spread (precision), tr-mean absolute RA-PE (accuracy), and percentage within a certain threshold, were determined using vector analysis and compared between groups.
SETTING
University Eye Clinic, Maastricht University Medical Center+, the Netherlands.
RESULTS
The tr-centroid RA-PEs of the E-PCA (0.02 diopter [D] at 82.2°), the I-PCA (0.08 D at 35.5°), and the P-PCA (0.09 D at 69.1°) were significantly different from each other (P < .01), but not significantly different from zero (P = .75, P = .05, and P = .05, respectively). The E-PCA had the best precision (tr-mean 0.40 D), which was not significantly lower than the I-PCA (0.42 D, P = .53) and P-PCA (0.43 D, P = .06). The E-PCA also had the best accuracy (0.40 D), which was not significantly different from the I-PCA (0.42 D, P = .26) and significantly better than the P-PCA (0.44 D, P < .01). The precision and accuracy of the I-PCA did not significantly differ from those of the P-PCA. There were no statistically significant differences in the percentage of eyes within a certain absolute RA-PE threshold.
CONCLUSIONS
The Barrett Toric Calculator using the E-PCA, I-PCA, or P-PCA showed a comparable prediction of postoperative refractive astigmatism in standard clinical practice.

BACKGROUND
To prospectively evaluate visual functions and patient satisfaction after bilateral implantation of diffractive continuous depth-of-focus intraocular lens (CDF IOL) compared with trifocal IOLs.
METHODS
This investigator-initiated study was approved by a certified local review board (registered: jRCTs032210305). CDF IOL (Synergy, J&J, group S) and trifocal IOL (AcrySof PanOptix, Alcon, group P) were implanted bilaterally in 30 patients each. Three months postoperatively, binocular outcomes of uncorrected (BUCVA) and distance-corrected (BDCVA) visual acuities at distances of 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.7, and 5 m were measured. Contrast sensitivities were binocularly measured using CSV-1000 (2.5 m) and Pelli-Robson charts at distances of 0.4 and 1 m. Symptoms of glare, halo, starburst, and waxy vision, and satisfaction for near, intermediate, and far visions were assessed with questionnaires. Differences between the two groups were examined.
RESULTS
Twenty-seven patients each completed the follow-up. The mean age of the group S was lower than that of the group P (P < 0.001). The BUCVA at 0.4 m was better in the S group, while the mean manifest refraction of the P group showed a significant hyperopic shift (P < 0.001). BDCVA was significantly better in the S group. The contrast sensitivity results at three distances showed no discernible differences. Although more patients in the S group reported significant glare and halo, their satisfaction with near vision was higher.
CONCLUSIONS
The binocular visual function of patients with CDF IOLs was comparable to or better than that of patients with trifocal IOLs. The patients were satisfied with near vision, despite the enhanced glare and halo. Understanding the differences between the two types of presbyopia-correcting IOLs is important to ensure patient satisfaction.

BACKGROUND
To comprehensively investigate risk factors for proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) after retinal detachment (RD) surgery.
METHODS
PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were systematically searched until May 22, 2023. Risk factors included demographic and disease-related risk factors. Odds ratios (ORs) and weighted mean differences (WMDs) were used as the effect sizes, and shown with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Sensitivity analysis was conducted. The protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022378652).
RESULTS
Twenty-two studies of 13,875 subjects were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Increased age was associated with a higher risk of postoperative PVR (pooled WMD = 3.98, 95%CI: 0.21, 7.75, P = 0.038). Smokers had a higher risk of postoperative PVR than non-smokers (pooled OR = 5.07, 95%CI: 2.21-11.61, P<0.001). Presence of preoperative PVR was associated with a greater risk of postoperative PVR (pooled OR = 22.28, 95%CI: 2.54, 195.31, P = 0.005). Presence of vitreous hemorrhage was associated with a greater risk of postoperative PVR (pooled OR = 4.12, 95%CI: 1.62, 10.50, P = 0.003). Individuals with aphakia or pseudophakia had an increased risk of postoperative PVR in contrast to those without (pooled OR = 1.41, 95%CI: 1.02, 1.95, P = 0.040). The risk of postoperative PVR was higher among patients with macula off versus those with macula on (pooled OR = 1.85, 95%CI: 1.24, 2.74, P = 0.002). Extent of RD in patients with postoperative PVR was larger than that in patients without (pooled WMD = 0.31, 95%CI: 0.02, 0.59, P = 0.036). Patients with postoperative PVR had longer duration of RD symptoms than those without (pooled WMD = 10.36, 95%CI: 2.29, 18.43, P = 0.012).
CONCLUSION
Age, smoking, preoperative PVR, vitreous hemorrhage, aphakia or pseudophakia, macula off, extent of RD, and duration of RD symptoms were risk factors for postoperative PVR in patients undergoing RD surgery, which may help better identify high-risk patients, and provide timely interventions.

To investigate the prevalence of myopia and high myopia in Olmsted County, Minnesota, from 1966 to 2019.
DESIGN
Retrospective, cross-sectional, trend study.
METHODS
Manifest refractions or lens prescription were converted to spherical equivalent (SE) to estimate the prevalence of adult myopia and high myopia. Age, sex, race, and visual acuity were recorded. Subjects with an SE of -0.5 diopters (D) or less were considered to have myopia; those with an SE of -6.0 D or less were considered to have high myopia. Exclusion criteria included visually significant cataract, pseudophakia, prior refractive surgery, or age less than 18 years.
RESULTS
Among 81,706 sampled subjects, the myopia prevalence increased from 33.9% (95% CI, 31.1-36.8) in the 1960s to 57.1% (95% CI, 56.6-57.6) in the 2010s (P < .001). The high myopia prevalence increased from 2.8% (95% CI, 1.95-3.98) in the 1960s to 8.3% (95% CI, 8.08-8.62) in the 2010s (P < .001). Both male (32.0%-55.1%, P < .001) and female (40.6%-58.5%, P < .001) subjects experienced increasing myopia prevalence from the 1960s to the 2010s; both male (2.6%-7.4%, P < .001) and female (3.4%-9.1%, P < .001) subjects also had higher high myopia prevalence rates from the 1960s through the 2010s. Increasing myopia and high myopia prevalence was detected by decade in nearly all age groups (excluding 18- to 24-year-old high myopia subjects). White and Asian subjects had the highest myopia prevalence, whereas Black subjects had the lowest. From the 2000s to the 2010s, White (53.3%-57.0%, P < .001) and Black (41.0%-47.0%, P = .001) subjects had significant increases in myopia prevalence. The mean SE decreased from the 1960s (-0.42 D; 95% CI, -0.59 to +2.49) to the 2010s (-1.85 D; 95% CI, -1.88 to +2.96) (P < .001).
CONCLUSIONS
From 1966 to 2019 in Olmsted County, Minnesota, there was a 68% and 199% increase in myopia and high myopia prevalence, respectively.

This study compared the optical quality and chromatic performance of refractive-diffractive intraocular lenses (IOLs) that are designed to extend the range of vision of pseudophakic patients and alter chromatic aberration. Five IOLs were evaluated, Tecnis Synergy and Triumf POD L GF, both intended to compensate for eye's chromatism, as well as Acriva Trinova Pro C-a lens that increases chromatic aberration, and AT Lisa Tri and AcrySof IQ PanOptix. An optical setup composed of a corneal model inducing monochromatic and chromatic aberrations and incorporating various spectral conditions was employed. The two chromatic-aberration correcting IOLs demonstrated the lowest far-focus dispersion, but it was negative only, with the Synergy indicating its ability to reduce eye's chromatic aberration. Although the Trinova increased far-point chromatism, it was close to the level of the PanOptix, but higher than that of the AT Lisa. All the studied models demonstrated varying optical quality in response to light color. Still, the strongest spectral dependency was associated with achromatizing technology. Therefore, chromatic aberration and wavelength dependency should be considered in IOL optimization and predicting visual function, particularly in non-white spectral conditions.

To present a case of a myopic macular hole that spontaneously closed twice in the presence of a broadly adherent posterior hyaloid membrane.
METHODS
Case report.
RESULTS
A 49-year-old man with high myopia and pseudophakia had a full-thickness macular hole in the left eye. The hole spontaneously closed in all retinal layers before the elective surgery, but the macular hole recurred one month later. The hole started sealing again spontaneously after one month, leaving a defect in the outer retinal layers. Four months later, the outer layer defect sealed and a lamellar macular hole developed. Throughout the course, the posterior hyaloid membrane remained parallel to the macular surface. The macular morphology and the patient's vision remained stationary at the 2-year follow-up.
CONCLUSION
This case demonstrated that myopic macular holes can form and seal repeatedly with a broadly adherent posterior hyaloid membrane. Although bridging phenomenon was the common sign indicating the initiation of the two hole closures, different patterns of tissue regeneration ensued.

BACKGROUND
We aimed to evaluate the existence of accommodative microfluctuations in eyes after cataract surgery.
METHODS
This retrospective observational cohort study included 1160 eyes of 713 patients (mean age: 72.5 ± 8.3 years) who underwent phacoemulsification, intraocular lens insertion, and an evaluation of accommodative microfluctuations with an autorefractometer. Patients with posterior segment disorders resulting in visual acuity impairment and those with unavailable medical information were excluded. High-frequency components (HFCs), between 1.0-2.3 Hz, based on fast Fourier transform analysis of the accommodative microfluctuation data were examined at postoperative 2-3 (2 M) and 6 months (6 M). The relationships between the HFCs and patient age, manifest refraction, and axial length were analyzed.
RESULTS
Increased HFC values (>65) were observed at a constant rate after cataract surgery, with prevalence rates of 33.4% at 2 M and 34.7% at 6 M. Postoperatively, at 2 M, increased HFC values were significantly more common for eyes with axial length ≥26 mm than for those with axial length <26 mm ( = 0.0056). However, they were not significantly correlated to age or postoperative manifest refraction.
CONCLUSIONS
At 2 M postoperatively, increased HFC values presented more frequently in eyes with a greater axial length; hence, the precise detection and understanding of postoperative accommodative spasms in high myopia patients is important.
