As the global population ages, understanding of the effect of aging on visual perception is of growing importance. This study investigates age-related changes in adulthood along size perception through the lens of three visual illusions: the Ponzo, Ebbinghaus, and Height-width illusions. Utilizing the Bayesian conceptualization of the aging brain, which posits increased reliance on prior knowledge with age, we explored potential differences in the susceptibility to visual illusions across different age groups in adults (ages 20-85 years). To this end, we used the BTPI (Ben-Gurion University Test for Perceptual Illusions), an online validated battery of visual illusions developed in our lab. The findings revealed distinct patterns of age-related changes for each of the illusions, challenging the idea of a generalized increase in reliance on prior knowledge with age. Specifically, we observed a systematic reduction in susceptibility to the Ebbinghaus illusion with age, while susceptibility to the Height-width illusion increased with age. As for the Ponzo illusion, there were no significant changes with age. These results underscore the complexity of age-related changes in visual perception and converge with previous findings to support the idea that different visual illusions of size are mediated by distinct perceptual mechanisms.

PURPOSE
The aim of this pilot study was to determine whether viewing an immersive 3D movie with large disparities in a cinema resulted in improved visual acuity (VA), stereoscopic depth perception (ST), and improved eye alignment in residual amblyopic children and children without amblyopia.
METHODS
A total of 24 children aged between 5 and 12 years with a history of anisometropic and/or strabismic amblyopia, that had been previously treated and who currently have residual amblyopia (N = 14), and in children with typical development without amblyopia (N = 10) viewed the movie in 3D Sing 2 in a cinema for 110 minutes. Visual acuity, stereoacuity and ocular deviation were assessed before viewing the movie, and three months later. Stereoacuity and ocular deviation were also measured immediately after viewing the movie.
RESULTS
We observed an improvement in visual acuity in the non-dominant (amblyopic) eye 3 months after viewing the movie in the amblyopic group (P<0.001). Stereopsis improved immediately after viewing the movie (P = 0.02), and after 3 months by ≈ 40% (P = 0.01). Moreover, improvements in stereopsis were also observed in children without amblyopia (P = 0.04). No significant changes in ocular deviation were observed in either group.
CONCLUSIONS
These pilot results suggest that brief exposure to large disparities by viewing a 3D movie in a cinema can help to improve stereopsis and visual acuity in children aged 5‒12 years with previously treated amblyopia, and provide a rationale for a randomized clinical trial.

A large body of literature has examined specificity and transfer of perceptual learning, suggesting a complex picture. Here, we distinguish between transfer over variations in a "task-relevant" feature (e.g., transfer of a learned orientation task to a different reference orientation) and transfer over a "task-irrelevant" feature (e.g., transfer of a learned orientation task to a different retinal location or different spatial frequency), and we focus on the mechanism for the latter. Experimentally, we assessed whether learning a judgment of one feature (such as orientation) using one value of an irrelevant feature (e.g., spatial frequency) transfers to another value of the irrelevant feature. Experiment 1 examined whether learning in eight-alternative orientation identification with one or multiple spatial frequencies transfers to stimuli at five different spatial frequencies. Experiment 2 paralleled Experiment 1, examining whether learning in eight-alternative spatial-frequency identification at one or multiple orientations transfers to stimuli with five different orientations. Training the orientation task with a single spatial frequency transferred widely to all other spatial frequencies, with a tendency to specificity when training with the highest spatial frequency. Training the spatial frequency task fully transferred across all orientations. Computationally, we extended the identification integrated reweighting theory (I-IRT) to account for the transfer data (Dosher, Liu, & Lu, 2023; Liu, Dosher, & Lu, 2023). Just as location-invariant representations in the original IRT explain transfer over retinal locations, incorporating feature-invariant representations effectively accounted for the observed transfer. Taken together, we suggest that feature-invariant representations can account for transfer of learning over a "task-irrelevant" feature.

PURPOSE
To investigate the characteristics of microperimetry and optical coherence tomography (OCT) in congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB), as well as their structure-function association.
METHODS
This cross-sectional study included 32 eyes from 32 participants with CSNB, comprising 18 with complete CSNB and 14 with incomplete CSNB, along with 36 eyes from 36 CSNB-unaffected controls matched for age, sex, and spherical equivalent. Using MP-3 microperimetry, central retinal sensitivity was assessed within a 20° field, distributed across six concentric rings (0°, 2°, 4°, 6°, 8°, and 10°). OCT was used to analyze retinal and choroidal thickness. The study aimed to assess the overall and ring-wise retinal sensitivity, as well as choroidal and retinal thickness in CSNB and CSNB-unaffected controls, with a secondary focus on the relationship between retinal sensitivity and microstructural features on OCT.
RESULTS
In comparison with CSNB-unaffected subjects, the overall and ring-wise retinal sensitivity as well as choroidal thickness were reduced in patients with CSNB (P < 0.001). Moreover, the central sensitivity in incomplete CSNB group was lower than in complete CSNB group (25.72 ± 3.93 dB vs. 21.92 ± 4.10 dB; P < 0.001). The retinal thickness in the CSNB group was thinner outside the fovea compared with the CSNB-unaffected group. Multiple mixed regression analyses revealed that point-to-point retinal sensitivity was significantly correlated with BCVA (P = 0.002) and the corresponding retinal thickness (P = 0.004).
CONCLUSIONS
Examination of retinal sensitivity and OCT revealed different spatial distribution profiles in CSNB and its subtypes. In CSNB eyes, retinal sensitivity on microperimetry was associated with retinal thickness on OCT.

PURPOSE
We sought to develop and evaluate a practical framework that supports structurally enhanced perimetric examinations.
METHODS
Two perimetric strategies were compared: standard Zippy Estimation through Sequential Testing (ZEST) procedure, a traditional visual field test with population-based prior distributions, and structural-ZEST (S-ZEST), enhanced with individual optical coherence tomography data to determine the starting parameters. The integration and collection of data was facilitated by a bespoke application developed in Shiny R (R Studio). The test was implemented using the Open Perimetry Interface on the Compass perimeter (CentreVue-iCare, Italy). The strategies were evaluated via simulations and on 10 visually healthy participants. The usability of the application was assessed in a simulated environment with 10 test users.
RESULTS
In simulations, the S-ZEST improved test speed in patients with glaucoma. In the practical implementation, there was a statistically significant decrease in the testing time (approximately 26%) and in the number of presentations per test with S-ZEST (P < 0.001). The structure-function relationship was similar between the two strategies. The time taken for users to complete the sequence of actions on the application was 52.9 ± 11.5 seconds (mean ± standard deviation).
CONCLUSIONS
Structurally enhanced perimetric examination can significantly improve test time in healthy subjects and can be delivered through a user-friendly interface. Further testing will need to assess feasibility and performance of S-ZEST in patients with glaucoma.
TRANSLATIONAL RELEVANCE
We have developed a user-friendly web application based within the Shiny environment for R, which implements an automated extraction of optical coherence tomography data from raw files and performs real-time calculations of structural features to inform the perimetric strategy.

PURPOSE
To assess the effectiveness of a switch to faricimab in individuals affected by DME and previously treated with aflibercept.
METHODS
In this retrospective, single-center study, DME patients previously treated with at least 3 injections of aflibercept then switched to faricimab were enrolled. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central subfield thickness (CST) were recorded at baseline, at the time of the switch and at 6 months follow-up. At transition to faricimab, patients were categorized as "good visual responders" (≥ 5 letters from baseline) or "poor visual responders" (< 5 letters), and as "good anatomical responders" (any reduction in edema compared to baseline) or "poor anatomical responders" (no reduction or worsening of edema). Changes in BCVA and CST were recorded at 6 months after the switch to faricimab.
RESULTS
100 eyes of 100 patients (61 female, 61%) were switched to faricimab after a mean of 6.8 ± 3.3 aflibercept injections. At the 6 months follow-up, only "poor visual responders" (N = 62) demonstrated a meaningful increase in BCVA (Δswitch-6M = + 5 letters; P = 0.007), coupled with a reduction in CST (Δswitch-6M = - 67.9 µm; P = 0.004); participants with "poor anatomical response" upon transitioning exhibited a significant functional gain (Δswitch-6M = + 4.5 letters; p = 0.05) but limited CST enhancements (Δswitch-6M = - 95.1 µm; p = 0.05).
CONCLUSIONS
Faricimab shows a positive impact on anatomical and functional metrics in DME cases refractory to aflibercept.

PURPOSE
To evaluate the intraoperative central corneal epithelial thickness (ET) as measured by optical coherence pachymetry (OCP) in myopic eyes undergoing alcohol-assisted photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).
METHODS
A retrospective review of patients who underwent alcohol-assisted PRK was performed. Data were abstracted on age, gender, contact lens (CL) wear, preoperative refractive errors, keratometry, topographic and ultrasonic pachymetry, and intraoperative OCP measurements before and after epithelium removal. The central ET was calculated by subtracting OCP measurement after epithelium removal from the OCP measurement prior to epithelium removal.
RESULTS
The study comprised of 162 consecutive eyes from 81 patients. Mean age was 26.73 ± 6.47 years, 50.6% were males. CL was used in 92 eyes (56.8%). The mean sphere and spherical equivalent were -3.60 ± 1.84 D and -3.26 ± 1.85D, respectively. The mean intraoperative ET was 58.22 ± 17.53 µm (range, 15-121µm). Fifty-five percent of the eyes had an ET measurement above or below the range of 40-60µm. ET was significantly higher in the second operated eye compared to the first operated eye (p = 0.006), and an association was found to CL-wear (p = 0.03). There was no significant difference in thickness between genders (p = 0.62), and no correlation to patient age (p = 0.45, r = 0.06), refractive errors (p > 0.30,r-0.07-0.08), nor keratometry(p > 0.80, r-0.01- (-0.02)).
CONCLUSION
The intraoperative assessment of ET in alcohol-assisted PRK showed a high variability of the central corneal epithelium, with a significant difference between the first and second operated eyes. This difference may have implications when the epithelium is not included in the surgical planning in surface ablation.

When thinking about major health concerns in the U.S. and around the world, eye care ranks lower compared to cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. However, people do not think about the direct connection between diabetes and eye health. Untreated diabetes can lead to visual impairments such as blindness or difficulty seeing. Studies have found that eye health associated with nutrition, occupational exposure, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease are some of the known risk factors. This study aimed to identify the potential risk factors that are associated with visual impairment (VI). The data used for this analysis were obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) - Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) from 2018 to 2021. We found important characteristics, such as the U.S. region, general health perception, employment status, income status, age, and health insurance source, that are associated with VI. Our study confirmed that the common demographical factors including age, race/ethnicity, the U.S. region, and gender are associated with VI. The study also highlights associations with additional risk factors such as health insurance source, general health perceptions, employment status, and income status. Using this information, we can reach out to communities with large numbers of individuals experiencing vision challenges and help educate them on prevention and treatment protocols, thereby effectively addressing VI and blindness challenges within our communities, neighborhoods, and finally, the broader society.

Our intuition suggests that when a movie is played in reverse, our perception of motion in the reversed movie will be perfectly inverted compared to the original. This intuition is also reflected in many classical theoretical and practical models of motion detection. However, here we demonstrate that this symmetry of motion perception upon time reversal is often broken in real visual systems. In this work, we designed a set of visual stimuli to investigate how stimulus symmetries affect time reversal symmetry breaking in the fruit fly 's well-studied optomotor rotation behavior. We discovered a suite of new stimuli with a wide variety of different properties that can lead to broken time reversal symmetries in fly behavioral responses. We then trained neural network models to predict the velocity of scenes with both natural and artificial contrast distributions. Training with naturalistic contrast distributions yielded models that break time reversal symmetry, even when the training data was time reversal symmetric. We show analytically and numerically that the breaking of time reversal symmetry in the model responses can arise from contrast asymmetry in the training data, but can also arise from other features of the contrast distribution. Furthermore, shallower neural network models can exhibit stronger symmetry breaking than deeper ones, suggesting that less flexible neural networks promote some forms of time reversal symmetry breaking. Overall, these results reveal a surprising feature of biological motion detectors and suggest that it could arise from constrained optimization in natural environments.
SIGNIFICANCE
In neuroscience, symmetries can tell us about the computations being performed by a circuit. In vision, for instance, one might expect that when a movie is played backward, one's motion percepts should all be reversed. Exact perceptual reversal would indicate a time reversal symmetry, but surprisingly, real visual systems break this symmetry. In this research, we designed visual stimuli to probe different symmetries in motion detection and identify features that lead to symmetry breaking in motion percepts. We discovered that symmetry breaking in motion detection depends strongly on both the detector's architecture and how it is optimized. Interestingly, we find analytically and in simulations that time reversal symmetries are broken in systems optimized to perform with natural inputs.

BACKGROUND
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Brolucizumab for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (n-AMD) through a systematic review and meta-analysis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Cochrane, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases were comprehensively searched for relevant studies. Stata and RevMan5.4 were applied for meta-analysis and risk of bias assessment. Data on the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central subfield thickness (CSFT), presence of intraretinal fluid (IRF) and/or subretinal fluid (SRF), participants with ≥1 serious adverse events, and participants with ≥1 adverse events were analyzed.
RESULTS
Six studies were finally included. Meta-analysis showed statistical differences in BCVA [SMD = -0.65, 95% CI [-0.17 to -0.23], < 0.05], the presence of IRF and/or SRF [RR = 0.67, 95% CI [0.56-0.79], < 0.05], and the safety of participants with ≥1 serious adverse events [RR = 0.57, 95% CI [0.39-0.84], < 0.05] between the experimental group and the control group. However, no statistical differences were observed in CSFT [SMD = -1.16, 95% CI [-2.79 to 0.47], > 0.05] or the safety of participants with ≥1 adverse events [RR = 1.07, 95% CI [0.97-1.17], > 0.05].
CONCLUSIONS
Compared to other anti-VEGF drugs such as Aflibercept and Ranibizumab, intravitreal injection of 6 mg Brolucizumab is more effective and safer for n-AMD, especially in the presence of IRF and/or SRF, and for participants with ≥1 serious adverse events.
