BACKGROUND
Fragrance substances are a frequent cause of contact allergy worldwide. Fragrance exposure varies by sex, age and possibly country, influenced by cosmetic availability, environmental conditions and cultural practices.
OBJECTIVES
To systematically review and gather prevalence of sensitization to fragrance mix I (FM I) and fragrance mix II (FM II) in consecutively patch-tested European dermatitis patients.
METHOD
A total of 4134 publications on patch test results of European dermatitis patients, published from 1981 to 2022, were systematically reviewed according to a previously registered and published PROSPERO protocol.
RESULTS
Eighty-four eligible original articles were analysed. Overall prevalence of sensitization to fragrance mix I (FM I) was 6.81% (95% CI: 6.37-7.28), and FM II was 3.64% (95% CI: 3.3-4.01). Sensitization to FM I was most prevalent in Central and Eastern Europe and to FM II in Western Europe. No clear time trends were observed. Among paediatric dermatitis patients, sensitization prevalence for FM I and FM II was 4.09% (95% CI: 3.37-4.96) and 2.17% (95% CI: 1.53-3.07).
CONCLUSION
The frequency of positive patch test results for both FMI and FMII remains high. Sensitization is also prevalent among children. Enhanced regulation and labelling of cosmetic products play a vital role in averting exposure and sensitization to fragrance allergens.

OBJECTIVE
To analyze and summarize the types, incidence rates and relevant influencing factors of adverse events (AEs) after high-intensity focused ultrasound ablation of gynecological diseases and provide reference and basis for handling such events in clinical practice.
METHOD
We searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and Embase databases to retrieve all literature since its establishment until February 2024. We evaluated the quality of included literature and publication bias and conducted a meta-analysis of single group rates for various AEs using Stata 17.0.
RESULTS
This systematic review finally included 41 articles. We summarized 34 kinds of AEs in 7 aspects and conducted a single group rate meta-analysis and sub-group analysis of 16 kinds of AEs. Among the common AEs of High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), the incidence of lower abdominal pain/pelvic pain is 36.1% (95% CI: 24.3%∼48.8%), vaginal bleeding is 20.6% (95% CI: 13.9%∼28.0%), vaginal discharge is 14.0% (95% CI: 9.6%∼19.1%), myoma discharge is 24% (95% CI: 14.6%∼34.8%), buttock pain is 10.8% (95% CI: 6.0%∼16.5%) and sacral pain is 10% (95% CI: 8.8%∼11.2%). Serious complications include uterine rupture, necrotic tissue obstruction requiring surgical intervention, third degree skin burns and persistent lower limb pain or movement disorders.
CONCLUSION
The common AEs after HIFU surgery are mostly mild and controllable, and the incidence of serious complications is extremely low. By reasonable prevention and active intervention, these events can be further reduced, making it a safe and effective treatment method. It is a good choice for patients who crave noninvasive treatment or have other surgical contraindications.

OBJECTIVES
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of acute lower respiratory infection (ALRI) in young children. With substantial advances in RSV research, we aimed to conduct an updated systematic review of risk factors for RSV-ALRI in children under five years.
METHODS
We updated our previously published literature search to November 2022 among three English databases and additionally searched three Chinese databases (from January 1995) to identify all relevant publications. We performed random-effects meta-analyses to estimate the pooled odds ratio and 95% confidence interval (CI) for each risk factor and each outcome (RSV-ALRI in the community and RSV-ALRI hospitalisation).
RESULTS
A total of 47 studies were included (26 from the updated search). Indoor air pollution was identified as a possible risk factor for RSV-ALRI in the community (OR 1.45, 95% CI: 1.10-1.90). The identified risk factors for RSV-ALRI hospitalisation fall into four categories: demographic (male sex, Māori and Pacific ethnicities vs European or other ethnicities), pre- and post- neonatal (prematurity, low birth weight, small for gestational age, maternal smoking during pregnancy or lactation, maternal age <30 years vs 30-34 years, multiparity, caesarean section vs vaginal), household and environmental (having siblings, passive smoking, maternal asthma, daycare centre attendance), and health and medical conditions (any chronic diseases, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, HIV infections, congenital heart disease, Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, previous asthma). The pooled ORs ranged from 1.14 to 4.55.
CONCLUSIONS
Our findings on the risk factors for RSV-ALRI help identify RSV high-risk groups, which has important implications for RSV prevention at both individual and population levels.

Research has indicated unique challenges in audiovisual integration of speech among autistic individuals, although methodological differences have led to divergent findings. We conducted a systematic literature search to identify studies that measured audiovisual speech integration among both autistic and non-autistic individuals. Across the 18 identified studies (combined N = 952), autistic individuals showed impaired audiovisual integration compared to their non-autistic peers (g = 0.69, 95% CI [0.53, 0.85], p <.001). This difference was not found to be influenced by participants' mean ages, studies' sample sizes, risk-of-bias scores, or paradigms investigated. However, a subgroup analysis suggested that child studies may show larger between-group differences than adult ones. The prevailing pattern of impaired audiovisual speech integration in autism may have cascading effects on communicative and social behavior. However, small samples and inconsistency in design/analysis translated into considerable heterogeneity in findings and opacity regarding the influence of underlying unisensory and attentional factors. We recommend three key directions for future research: larger samples, more research with adults, and standardization of methodology and analytical approaches.

INTRODUCTION
The current evidence linking tooth loss and cardiovascular disease mortality is inconclusive. Thus, the aim of this systematic review was to explore the association between tooth loss and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality.
METHODS
A comprehensive literature search of databases and gray literature included: Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, CENTRAL, Google Scholar, various digital repositories. The included studies reported on CVD mortality and tooth loss. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used to assess the quality of included studies. Random-effects meta-analysis method, sub-group analysis (based on the tooth loss categories (edentulous and fewer than 10 teeth present), meta-regression (based on the number. of confounders), publication bias and sensitivity analysis were performed.
RESULTS
Twelve articles met the eligibility criteria with an overall "Good" quality. A significant association between tooth loss (edentulous or less than 10 teeth present) and CVD mortality was found in the primary meta-analysis, which compiled data from 12 studies. The estimated hazard ratio (HR) was 1.66 (95% CI: 1.32-2.09), and there was high heterogeneity (I = 82.42). Subgroup analysis revealed that the edentulous subgroup showed a higher risk with no significant heterogeneity, while the subgroup with fewer than 10 teeth showed a higher risk with substantial heterogeneity. Meta-regression analysis did not reveal any significant impact (p = 0.626) on whether variations in the number of confounders across studies would substantially affect the overall findings. No publication bias was detected and the sensitivity analysis based on the critical confounders also confirmed that tooth loss as a risk factor for CVD mortality (HR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.28- 1.80), (I 51.82%).
CONCLUSION
The present systematic review reported that being edentulous or having lesser than 10 teeth is a predictive indicator of CVD mortality.

OBJECTIVES
Loneliness and social isolation are associated with adverse health outcomes, especially within the elderly population, underlining the need for effective interventions. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to summarize all available evidence regarding the effectiveness of interventions for loneliness and social isolation, to map out their working mechanisms, and to give implications for policy and practice.
DESIGN
Systematic literature review and meta-analysis.
SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS
Older adults (≥65 years).
METHODS
A systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL for studies quantitively or qualitatively assessing effects of interventions for loneliness and social isolation in older adults, following predefined selection criteria. Risk of bias as well as small study effects were assessed and, wherever appropriate, information about effect sizes of individual studies pooled using random-effects meta-analyses. Sources for between-study heterogeneity were explored using meta-regression.
RESULTS
Of n = 2223 identified articles, n = 67 were eventually included for narrative synthesis. Significant intervention effects were reported for a proportion of studies (55.9% and 50.0% for loneliness and social isolation, respectively) and 57.6% of studies including a follow-up measure (n = 29) reported sustained intervention effects. Meta-analysis of n = 27 studies, representing n = 1756 participants, suggested a medium overall effect of loneliness interventions (d = -0.47; 95% CI, -0.62 to -0.32). Between-study heterogeneity was substantial and could not be explained by differences in study design, year of publication, outcome measures, intervention length, participant demographics, setting, baseline level of loneliness, or geographic location. However, non-technology-based interventions reported larger effect sizes on average (Δd = -0.35; 95% CI, -0.66 to -0.04; P = .029) and were more often significant. Qualitative assessment of potential intervention mechanisms resulted in 3 clusters of effective components: "promoting social contact," "transferring knowledge and skills," and "addressing social cognition".
CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS
Interventions for loneliness and social isolation can generally be effective, although some unexplained between-study heterogeneity remains. Further research is needed regarding the applicability of interventions across different settings and countries, also considering their cost-effectiveness.

BACKGROUND
Together with environmental factors, intrinsic capacity (the composite of all the physical and mental capacities of an individual) has been proposed as a marker of healthy ageing. However, whether intrinsic capacity predicts major clinical outcomes is unclear. We aimed to explore the association of intrinsic capacity with functional decline and mortality in older adults.
METHODS
In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we conducted a systematic search in MEDLINE (via PubMed), Scopus, and Web of Science from database inception to Feb 14, 2024, of observational longitudinal studies conducted in older adults (age ≥60 years) assessing the association of intrinsic capacity with impairment in basic activities of daily living (BADL) or instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) or risk of mortality. Estimates were extracted by two reviewers (JLS-S and W-HL) and were pooled using three-level meta-analytic models. The quality of each study was independently assessed by two authors (JLS-S and PLV) using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for longitudinal studies. Heterogeneity was evaluated using the I indicator at two levels: within-study (level 2) and between-study (level 3) variation. For associations between intrinsic capacity and IADL and BADL, we transformed data (standardised β coefficients and odds ratios [ORs]) into Pearson product moment correlation coefficients (r) using Pearson and Digby formulas to allow comparability across studies. For associations between intrinsic capacity and risk of mortality, hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% CIs were extracted from survival analyses. This study is registered with PROSPERO, CRD42023460482.
FINDINGS
We included 37 studies (206 693 participants; average age range 65·3-85·9 years) in the systematic review, of which 31 were included in the meta-analysis on the association between intrinsic capacity and outcomes; three studies (2935 participants) were included in the meta-analysis on the association between intrinsic capacity trajectories and longitudinal changes in BADL or IADL. Intrinsic capacity was inversely associated with longitudinal impairments in BADL (Pearson's r -0·12 [95% CI -0·19 to -0·04]) and IADL (-0·24 [-0·35 to -0·13]), as well as with mortality risk (hazard ratio 0·57 [95% CI 0·51 to 0·63]). An association was also found between intrinsic capacity trajectories and impairment in IADL (but not in BADL), with maintained or improved intrinsic capacity over time associated with a lower impairment in IADL (odds ratio 0·37 [95% CI 0·19 to 0·71]). There was no evidence of publication bias (Egger's test p>0·05) and there was low between-study heterogeneity (I=18·4%), though within-study (I=63·2%) heterogeneity was substantial.
INTERPRETATION
Intrinsic capacity is inversely associated with functional decline and mortality risk in older adults. These findings could support the use of intrinsic capacity as a marker of healthy ageing, although further research is needed to refine the structure and operationalisation of this construct across settings and populations.

BACKGROUND
Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, exhibiting an upward trend in prevalence. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of Parkinson's disease, temporal trends between 1980 and 2023, and variations in prevalence by location, age, sex, survey period, sociodemographic index (SDI), human development index (HDI), and study characteristics (sample size, diagnostic criteria, and data source).
METHODS
In this systematic review and meta-analysis we searched PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and Global Health for observational studies that reported Parkinson's disease prevalence in the general population from database inception to Nov 1, 2023. We included studies if they were original observational investigations, had participants from the general population or community-based datasets, and provided numerical data on the prevalence of Parkinson's disease either with 95% CIs or with sufficient information to calculate 95% CIs. Studies were excluded if they were conducted in a specific population, had a sample size smaller than 1000, or were review articles, case reports, protocols, meeting abstracts, letters, comments, short communications, posters, and reports. The publication characteristics (first author and publication year), study location (countries, WHO regions, SDI, and HDI), survey period, study design, diagnostic criteria, data source, participant information, and prevalence data were extracted from articles using a standard form. Two authors independently evaluated eligibility, and discrepancies were resolved through discussion with the third author. We used random effect models to pool estimates with 95% CIs. Estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was calculated to assess the temporal trend in prevalence of Parkinson's disease. The study was registered with PROSPERO, CRD42022364417.
FINDINGS
83 studies from 37 countries were eligible for analysis, with 56 studies providing all-age prevalence, 53 studies reporting age-specific prevalence, and 26 studies providing both all-age and age-specific prevalence. Global pooled prevalence of Parkinson's disease was 1·51 cases per 1000 (95% CI 1·19-1·88), which was higher in males (1·54 cases per 1000 [1·17-1·96]) than in females (1·49 cases per 1000 [1·12-1·92], p=0·030). During different survey periods, the prevalence of Parkinson's disease was 0·90 cases per 1000 (0·48-1·44; 1980-89), 1·38 cases per 1000 (1·17-1·61; 1990-99), 1·18 cases per 1000 (0·77-1·67; 2000-09), and 3·81 cases per 1000 (2·67-5·14; 2010-23). The EAPC of Parkinson's disease prevalence was significantly higher in the period of 2004-23 (EAPC 16·32% [95% CI 6·07-26·58], p=0·0040) than in the period of 1980-2003 (5·30% [0·82-9·79], p=0·022). Statistically significant disparities in prevalence were observed across six WHO regions. Prevalence increased with HDI or SDI. Considerable variations were observed in the pooled prevalence of Parkinson's disease based on different sample sizes or diagnostic criteria. Prevalence also increased with age, reaching 9·34 cases per 1000 (7·26-11·67) among individuals older than 60 years.
INTERPRETATION
The global prevalence of Parkinson's disease has been increasing since the 1980s, with a more pronounced rise in the past two decades. The prevalence of Parkinson's disease is higher in countries with higher HDI or SDI. It is necessary to conduct more high-quality epidemiological studies on Parkinson's disease, especially in low SDI countries.

This review evaluates randomized controlled trials (RCTs) intervening on adult state anxiety (fear and emotional distress during dental treatment), chronic dental (trait) anxiety or dental phobia (disproportionately high trait anxiety; meeting diagnostic criteria for specific phobia). Seven online databases were systematically searched. 173 RCTs met inclusion criteria, of which 67 qualified for 14 pooled analyses. To alleviate state anxiety during oral surgery, moderate-certainty evidence supports employing hypnosis (SMD=-0.31, 95 %CI[-0.56,-0.05]), and low-certainty evidence supports prescribing benzodiazepines (SMD=-0.43, [-0.74,-0.12]). Evidence for reducing state anxiety is inconclusive regarding psychotherapy, and does not support virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET), virtual reality distraction, music, aromatherapy, video information and acupuncture. To reduce trait anxiety, moderate-certainty evidence supports using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT; SMD=-0.65, [-1.06, -0.24]). Regarding dental phobia, evidence with low-to-moderate certainty supports employing psychotherapy (SMD=-0.48, [-0.72,-0.24]), and CBT specifically (SMD=-0.43, [-0.68,-0.17]), but not VRET. These results show that dental anxieties are manageable and treatable. Clinicians should ensure that interventions match their purpose-managing acute emotions during treatment, or alleviating chronic anxiety and avoidance tendencies. Existing research gaps underscore the necessity for future trials to minimize bias and follow CONSORT reporting guidelines.

Nutrition plays a crucial role in the development and health of the human brain, from early stages to adulthood. The complex process of neurodevelopment necessitates interaction among various factors, with balance in the concentration of vital macronutrients and micronutrients being essential. Regarding micronutrients, vitamin B12 stands out, playing a vital role in the development and functioning of the motor nervous system. The objective was to investigate the influence of reduced levels of vitamin B12 on infant motor development and analyze the effects of supplementation on this aspect of development.
METHODS
For this purpose, the criteria of the PRISMA method and registration in the PROSPERO database were used. The search was conducted in the following databases: PubMed (Medline), Scopus, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect. A total of 684 records were initially identified.
RESULTS
Of the eight included articles, there was diversity regarding geographical contexts and study designs. The final sample comprised a total of 1,559 participants of both sexes. Studies aimed at correcting low levels of vitamin B12 opted for supplementation, following various protocols that varied in dose, administration method, and duration. At the end of the studies, the serum level of this vitamin ranged from 131 pmol/L to 1141 pmol/L.
CONCLUSION
There is a complex array of factors contributing to reduced levels of vitamin B12, especially in the early stages of life, which significantly impacts infant motor development. Despite methodological variations among studies, evidence suggests that low levels of vitamin B12 may affect motor development and that supplementation could be an effective means of enhancing motor aspects in healthy children. However, due to the diversity of outcomes, it is important to promote comprehensive public policies to encourage appropriate interventions in this area.
