Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) may change speech sound parameters due to the enlargement of oral and nasal cavities. This study aimed to systematically review the current evidence on speech changes as a side effect of RME. An electronic search was conducted in nine databases, and two of them accessed the 'grey literature'. The eligibility criteria included clinical studies assessing orthodontic patients with maxillary transverse deficiency and the relationship with speech alterations without restricting publication year or language. Only interventional studies were included. The JBI Critical Appraisal Tool assessed the risk of bias. The initial search provided 4853 studies. Seven articles (n = 200 patients) met the inclusion criteria and were analysed. The primary source of bias was the absence of a control group in four studies. RME altered speech production by changing vowel fundamental frequency and fricative phoneme formant frequency. Shimmer and jitter rates changed in one and two studies, respectively. Two studies presented deterioration during orthodontic treatment, but speech improved after appliance removal. Despite the limited evidence, RME affects speech during and after treatment.

BACKGROUND
Treatment of school-age children (6-12 years of age) who stutter is a public health priority. Their clinical needs include a psychosocial focus and stuttering reduction. For the latter clinical need, there is a critical window of opportunity for these children warranting research attention.
PURPOSE
The purpose of the review is to guide future clinical research by establishing (a) what interventions are associated with stuttering reduction for school-age children (b) the reported immediate and longer-term effects of those interventions, and (c) the level of evidence for these interventions in terms of study design.
METHODS
Fourteen databases and three conference proceedings were searched for interventions used to reduce stuttering in school-age children. Primary outcomes were mean stuttering reductions pre-treatment, immediately post-treatment, and any follow-up assessments.
RESULTS
Of the 4305 studies identified from the databases, 67 studies met inclusion criteria. Five different treatment approaches were reported in the literature that might reduce stuttering for a school-age child, but with varying effect sizes. These include (a) operant methods, (b) speech restructuring, (c) combined operant methods and speech restructuring, (d) machine-driven treatments, and (e) treatments with a cognitive behaviour therapy component.
CONCLUSIONS
Operant methods warrant investigation in future clinical trial research, as do variants of speech restructuring. Hybrid approaches showed encouraging results, including speech restructuring variants combined with operant methods or with cognitive behaviour therapy. However, evidence is preliminary only at Phase I and II trials. Several treatments with reported clinical promise have been overlooked for decades and require further investigation.

PURPOSE
There is an important need for interprofessional practice (IPP) between speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and classroom teachers (CTs) in mainstream schools to support student outcomes. This mixed methods systematic review aimed to synthesize existing literature to describe the experiences of IPP between SLPs and CTs in mainstream schools.
METHOD
A systematic review protocol was utilized to conduct a comprehensive search of six databases (PubMed Central, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL EBSCO, ERIC, and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global) using key words related to the research question. A total of 1,876 unique studies were retrieved. Of these, 18 studies were identified as relevant to the research question, as they described the experiences of IPP between SLPs and CTs. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the quantitative and qualitative studies.
RESULTS
Six main themes describing IPP experiences were identified: (1) what are you bringing to the collaboration table? (2) putting the value in collaboration, (3) sharing is collaborating, (4) the nature of collaboration varies, (5) the educational context matters, and (6) influences to collaboration beyond professional control.
CONCLUSIONS
IPP between SLPs and CTs is complex, with various facilitators and barriers to IPP emerging within the education context. Competencies for SLPs and CTs related to having a shared understanding, adequate communication, and building relationships with each other help support IPP in schools. The utilization of a relationship-centered care approach between SLPs and CTs is also important to foster and support student outcomes.

BACKGROUND
The goal of managing auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) is to restore the children's ability to discriminate auditory information. Children who are not making sufficient progress in speech comprehension, and speech and language development after receiving adequate auditory re/habilitation and/or acoustic amplification may be candidates for cochlear implantation (CI). Despite the growing number of published literature on CI outcomes in children with ANSD, the current evidence is primarily based on case reports or retrospective chart reviews some of which had a limited number of children. In addition, the outcomes of CI seem to vary between children with ANSD. Thus, compelling evidence is lacking. This updated systematic review evaluated the speech perception, language, and speech intelligibility outcomes of children with ANSD post-CI.
METHODS
An online bibliographic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and CENTRAL databases. We included both interventional and observational studies that assessed the outcomes of the CI in children with ANSD.
RESULTS
Thirty-three studies were included in this systematic review. Several tests were used to assess speech perception following CI in children with ANSD. The findings of this study revealed that children with ANSD had mean Categories of Auditory Performance scores ranging from 4.3 to 7 post-operatively, this result was better than the pre-operative scores which ranged between 0.4 to 2.5. Likewise, the Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale, Phonetically Balanced Kindergarten, and multisyllabic lexical neighborhood test showed clinically relevant improvement after CI. The same findings were reported for language and speech intelligibility scores. One study investigated the quality of life/children satisfaction after CI and showed overall good satisfaction with the outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS
The present systematic review suggests that CI is a feasible and effective hearing rehabilitation modality for children with ANSD.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, personal protective equipment such as facial masks and coverings were mandated all over the globe to protect against the virus. Although the primary aim of wearing face masks is to protect against viral transmission, they pose a potential burden on communication. The purpose of this scoping review was to identify the state of the evidence of the effect of facial coverings on acoustic and perceptual speech outcomes. The scoping review followed the framework created by Arksey & O'Malley (2005) and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines (PRISMA-ScR; Tricco et al., 2018). The search was completed in May 2021 across the following databases: PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. A total of 3,846 records were retrieved from the database search. Following the removal of duplicates, 3,479 remained for the title/abstract screen and 149 were selected for the full-text review. Of these, 52 were included in the final review and relevant data were extracted. The 52 articles included in the final review consisted of; 11 studied perceptual outcomes only, 16 studied acoustic outcomes only, and 14 studied both perceptual and acoustic outcomes. 13 of these investigated acoustic features that could be used for mask classification. Although the findings varied from article to article, many trends stood out. Many articles revealed that face masks act as a low pass filter, dampening sounds at higher frequencies; however, the frequency range and the degree of attenuation varied based on face mask type. All but five articles that reported on perceptual outcomes showed a common trend that wearing a face mask was associated with poorer speech intelligibility. The findings of the scoping review provided evidence that facial coverings negatively impacted speech intelligibility, which is likely due to a combination of auditory and visual cue degradation. Due to the continued prevalence of mask use, how facial coverings affect a wider variety of speaker populations, such as those with communication impairments, and strategies for overcoming communication challenges should be explored.

BACKGROUND
Different oral motor appliances have been used in connection with speech therapy to improve oral motor function and speech development, but no consensus has been reached on the effectiveness of the appliances. The objective was to systematically review the effectiveness of oral motor appliances on oral motor function and speech in children with speech sound disorders (SSDs) or oral motor dysfunctions.
METHODS
A systematic search was conducted up to February 2023 in the PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane databases. Inclusion criteria were prospective randomized or case-control clinical trials investigating the effect of intraoral appliances on orofacial function and/or speech. The risk of bias was evaluated by the Cochrane Collaboration's Robins-I tool.
RESULTS
Nine publications of three individual studies met the inclusion and search criteria. Six of the publications were conducted in children with Down Syndrome (DS) and three publications were conducted in children with Cerebral Palsy (CP). No meta-analysis was made due to the limitations of the publications. Selected studies reported some beneficial effects of intraoral appliances on oral motor function in children with DS and CP, although the evidence is low. Due to the study design in selected studies and confounding factors, the overall risk of bias was categorized as moderate or high.
DISCUSSION
Intraoral appliances may improve oral motor function in children with DS and CP. Due to lack of studies this review limited to children with DS and CP. The initial question concerning SSDs was not answered. Well-designed RCTs with larger sample sizes are needed, especially among non-syndromic children with SSDs. The level of evidence was considered very low.

BACKGROUND
Subtle abnormalities in children's intelligence, motor skills, and psychology from various assisted reproductive treatments (ARTs) might be underdiagnosed. Understanding the prognosis of intelligence, motor skills, and psychology in children from ART would provide parents with reasonable expectations and enable them to plan relevant support to achieve the optimum potential in ART children.
METHODS
We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Ovid, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases until April 13, 2021, to identify relevant studies. Thirty-four studies met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The meta-analysis employed a standardized mean difference model. The outcome of this study is to compare intelligence quotient (IQ), motoric ability, and behavioral problems between all ARTs, in vitro fertilization (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) to naturally conceived (NC) children. Subdomains of intelligence based on the Cattell, Horn, and Carroll Model (CHC Model) of cognitive architecture, including fluid reasoning, short-term and working memory, processing speed, visual-spatial ability, long-term memory retrieval, and crystalized intelligence (knowledge), were evaluated and summarized in details. Motor skill was stratified into two domains: gross motoric and fine motoric. Behavioral problem was categorized as externalizing and internalizing behavior.
RESULTS
Meta-analysis showed that verbal intelligence score in IVF toddlers is significantly lower than NC toddlers (p = 0.02); conversely, ICSI toddlers scored significantly higher verbal intelligence score compared to NC toddlers (p = 0.005). Toddlers born after ART had significantly lower non-verbal intelligence score (p = 0.047). IVF toddlers scored significantly lower fine motor score (p = 0.01) compared to naturally conceived toddlers. Based on parent's CBCL, NC toddlers had higher total (p = 0.01) and externalizing behavior (p = 0.001) scores compared to ART toddlers. Evaluation of full scale IQ and all domains of intelligence in preschool and primary school children revealed that no significant differences exist between ART and NC children. Based on preschool and primary school parents' CBCL, IVF children had significantly lower externalizing behavior score compared to NC children (p = 0.04). Meta-analyses of studies on young adolescents revealed that ART young adolescents scored higher academically than their NC counterparts, including on mathematics (p < 0.00001) and reading or language (p < 0.00001).
CONCLUSIONS
Despite differences in certain aspects, this finding suggests that ART is unlikely to cause negative impacts on children's neurodevelopment.

BACKGROUND
Awake craniotomy is a unique method to prevent motor deficits during the resection of lesions located in or close to functional areas. We sought to study the outcomes of pediatric craniotomy on published studies.
METHODS
The search for articles was performed through multiple search engines: PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Wiley. The following search terms were used for screening the titles and abstracts: "awake brain surgery" and "children" or "pediatrics," "awake craniotomy," and "children" or "pediatrics," "pediatrics awake craniotomy," "awake brain surgery pediatrics," and "tumors." On initial screening of the titles and abstracts, 54 articles were found. After a thorough review of the full texts of obtained articles and removing duplicates, 16 articles remained.
RESULTS
The mean age group was 12.23 years. There was a slight difference between genders who underwent awake craniotomy in the pediatric age group, 52.7% male and 47.3% for female. Tumor resection was the most common indication of the surgery. Almost half (47.9%) experienced complete recovery following the surgery. However, of those who had complicated recovery, 7.5% experienced a speech deficit.
CONCLUSIONS
This systematic review summarized that awake brain surgery can prevent significant motor and language deficits postoperatively in children after tumor resection as it is considered a feasible and safe procedure.

BACKGROUND
Converging evidence supports that gaming and gambling disorders are associated with executive dysfunction. The involvement of different components of executive functions (EF) in these forms of behavioural addiction is unclear.
AIM
In a systematic review, we aim to uncover the association between working memory (WM), a crucial component of EF, and disordered gaming and gambling. Note that, in the context of this review, gaming has been used synonymously with video gaming.
METHODS
Adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), we systematically searched for studies published from 2012 onwards.
RESULTS
The search yielded 6081 records after removing duplicates, from which 17 peer-reviewed journal articles were eligible for inclusion. The association between WM and problem or disordered gaming and gambling have been categorized separately to observe possible differences. Essentially, problem gaming or gambling, compared to disorder, presents lesser severity and clinical significance. The results demonstrate reduced auditory-verbal WM in individuals with gambling disorder. Decreased WM capacity was also associated with problem gambling, with a correlation between problem gambling severity and decreased WM capacity. Similarly, gaming disorder was associated with decreased WM. Specifically, gaming disorder patients had lower WM capacity than the healthy controls.
CONCLUSION
Working memory seems to be a significant predictor of gambling and gaming disorders. Therefore, holistic treatment approaches that incorporate cognitive techniques that could enhance working memory may significantly boost gambling and gaming disorders treatment success.

The use of telerehabilitation for the treatment of speech and language disorders in the field of hearing is increasing. A comprehensive study comparing telerehabilitation's effectiveness with traditional rehabilitation can help us understand it better. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to compare the effectiveness of telerehabilitation with traditional rehabilitation for speech and language disorders in children with hearing disabilities in 2023. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, PubMed Central, Cochrane, Scopus, Google Scholar, Science Direct, and the Web of Science from 2000 to February 28, 2023. The articles were selected based on keywords, determined criteria, and reviewed in terms of title, abstract, and full text. Finally, articles that were relevant to our aim were evaluated. The initial search resulted in the extraction of 1,788 articles. After reviewing the articles and applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, nine articles were selected for analysis. Four (44.44%) and 3 (33.33%) studies were case-control and quasi-experimental studies, respectively. Four (44.44%) studies were conducted in the United States. SPSS, Preschool Language Scales, fifth edition (PLS-5), and microphone were the most common tools, each of which included 4 (44.44%), 3 (33.33%), and (333.33%) studies. Traditional rehabilitation and telerehabilitation can effectively improve the speech and language skills of children with hearing disabilities. However, it is always suggested to use traditional rehabilitation first to achieve better results.
