Single-atom catalysis (SAC) attracts wide interest for zinc-air batteries that require high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reactions. However, catalyst design is still highly challenging because of the insufficient driving force for promoting multiple-electron transfer kinetics. Herein, we report a superstructure-assisted SAC on tungsten carbides for oxygen evolution and reduction reactions. In addition to the usual single atomic sites, strikingly, we reveal the presence of highly ordered Co superstructures in the interfacial region with tungsten carbides that induce internal strain and promote bifunctional catalysis. Theoretical calculations show that the combined effects from superstructures and single atoms strongly reduce the adsorption energy of intermediates and overpotential of both oxygen reactions. The catalyst therefore presented impressive bifunctional activity with an ultralow potential gap of 0.623 V and delivered a high power density of 188.5 mW cm for assembled zinc-air batteries. This work opens up new opportunities for atomic catalysis.

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is an opportunistic gram-positive, non-motile, and non-sporulating bacteria that induces pneumonia, a provocative lung infection affecting mainly the terminal bronchioles and the small air sacs known as alveoli. Recently, it has developed antibiotic resistance to the available consortium as per the WHO reports; thereby, novel remedial targets and resilient medications to forestall and cure this illness are desperately needed. Here, using pan-genomics, a total of 1,387 core proteins were identified. Subtractive proteome analyses further identified 12 proteins that are vital for bacteria. One membrane protein (secY) and two cytoplasmic proteins (asd and trpG) were chosen as possible therapeutic targets concerning minimum % host identity, essentiality, and other cutoff values, such as high resistance in the MDR S. aureus. The UniProt AA sequences of the selected targets were modelled and docked against 3 drug-like chemical libraries. The top-ranked compounds i.e., ZINC82049692, ZINC85492658 and 3a of Isosteviol derivative for Aspartate-semialdehyde dehydrogenase (asd); ZINC38222743, ZINC70455378, and 5 m Isosteviol derivative for Anthranilate synthase component II (trpG); and finally, ZINC72292296, ZINC85632684, and 7 m Isosteviol derivative for Protein translocase subunit secY (secY), were further subjected to molecular dynamics studies for thermodynamic stability and energy calculation. Our study proposes new therapeutic targets in S. aureus, some of which have previously been reported in other pathogenic microorganisms. Owing to further experimental validation, we anticipate that the adapted methodology and the predicted results in this work could make major contributions towards novel drug discovery and their targets in S. aureus caused pneumonia.

The atomically dispersed Fe-N active site presents enormous potential for various renewable energy conversions. Despite its already remarkable catalytic performance, the local atomic microenvironment of each Fe atom can be regulated to further enhance its efficiency. Herein, a novel conceptual strategy that utilizes a simple salt-template polymerization method to simultaneously adjust the first coordination shell (Fe-N S ) and second coordination shell (C-S-C, a structure similar to thiophene) of Fe-N isolated atoms is proposed. Theoretical studies suggest that this approach can redistribute charge density in the MN moiety, lowering the d-band center of the metal site. This weakens the binding of oxygenated intermediates, enhancing oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity when compared to only implementing coordination shell regulation. Based on the above discovery, a single Fe atom electrocatalyst with the optimal Fe-N S -S active moiety incorporated in nitrogen, sulfur co-doped graphene (Fe-SAc/NSG) is designed and synthesized. The Fe-SAc/NSG catalyst exhibits excellent alkaline ORR activity, exceeding benchmark Pt/C and most Fe-SAc ORR electrocatalysts, as well as superior stability in Zn-air battery. This work aims to pave the way for creating highly active single metal atom catalysts through the localized regulation of their atomic structure.

PURPOSE
Concurrent inguinal hernia can be a challenge for a pediatric surgeon during a laparoscopic appendectomy in children. We aimed to present our approach to inguinal hernias seen during laparoscopic appendectomy.
METHODS
In our pediatric surgery clinic between July 2019 and December 2022, the records of patients aged 0-18 who underwent laparoscopic appendectomy were retrospectively investigated. The clinical findings, surgical procedure, and results of intervened inguinal hernia cases during laparoscopic appendectomy were evaluated.
RESULTS
Between the study dates, 293 laparoscopic appendectomies were performed in our clinic. Patent processus vaginalis was observed in 5 (1.7%) cases. Laparoscopic hernia repair was performed with the Burnia technique in 2 girls. In one case, the omentum was herniated and adhered to the hernia sac seen during laparoscopy. In another case, swelling in the groin occurred during the introduction of air into the abdomen at the beginning of the operation. Patent processus vaginalis seen in 3 asymptomatic cases was not intervened. There were no postoperative complications or recurrences in the two patients who underwent hernia repair.
CONCLUSION
Hernia repair with the Burnia technique might be safely performed in symptomatic inguinal hernia cases seen during laparoscopic appendectomy for early appendicitis.

Effect of faba bean Vicia faba L. water/alcohol extract on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, textural properties, and collagen deposition in the swim bladder of juvenile Nibea coibor.
Faba bean has gained attention as a cost-effective protein source with the potential to enhance product quality (texture properties, collagen content, etc.) in fish. However, its anti-nutrition factor, high feed conversion ratio, poor growth performance, etc. limit the widely application as a dietary source, especially in carnivorous fish. The water or alcohol extract of faba bean might resolve the problem. In this study, the juvenile Nibea coibor, known for their high-protein, large-sized, and high-grade swim bladder, were fed with seven isoproteic and isolipid experimental diets with the additive of faba bean water extract (1.25%, 2.5%, and 5%) or faba bean alcohol extract (0.9%, 1.8%, and 3.6%), with a control group without faba bean extract. After the 10-week feeding trail, the growth, antioxidant capacity, textural properties, and collagen deposition of the swim bladder were analyzed. Results showed that the 1.25% faba bean water extract group could significantly promote growth, textural quality of the swim bladder, and have beneficial effects on antioxidant response of fish. Conversely, dietary supplementation of faba bean alcohol extract resulted in reduced growth performance in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, fish fed diet with 1.25% faba bean water extract exhibited increased collagen content and upregulated collagen-related gene expression in the swim bladder, which was consistent with the Masson stain analysis for collagen fiber. Our results suggested that the anti-nutrient factor and bioactive component of faba bean may mainly be enriched in alcohol extract and water extract of faba bean, respectively. Besides, the appropriate addition of water extract of faba bean may improve the texture quality of the swim bladder by promoting collagen deposition. This study would provide a theoretical basis for the formulated diets with faba bean extract to promote product quality of marine fish.

FeNC single atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted great interest due to their highly active FeN sites. However, the pyrolysis treatment often leads to inevitable metal migration and aggregation, which reduces the catalytic activity. Moreover, due to the Fenton reaction caused by FeNC in alkaline and acidic solutions, the presence of Fe and peroxide in electrodes may generate free radicals, resulting in serious degradation of the organic ionomer and the membrane. Herein, we report an original strategy of introducing Co single atoms into FeNC catalysts, forming atomically dispersed bimetallic active sites (FeCoNC) and improving the activity and stability of the catalyst. Benefiting from this strategy, FeCoNC catalyst exhibits excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity in alkaline media (E = 0.88 V) and in acidic media (E = 0.77 V). As the cathode of Zn-air battery (ZAB), FeCoNC shows an excellent peak power density of 142.8 mW cm and a specific capacity of 806.6 mAh/g. This work provides a novel avenue to optimize and enhance the ORR performance of atomic dispersed FeNC catalysts.

INTRODUCTION
One of the most prevalent congenital wall abnormalities in children, umbilical hernias are often linked to premature or small-for-gestational-age babies. In cases of intestinal malrotation or if the cecum is very movable, generalized peritonitis may facilitate the imprisonment of these hernias.
CASE REPORT
We described a case of a 4-month-old baby who had a prior reducible umbilical hernia with a history of fever, vomiting, poor appetite, and constipation for around 48 h. The patient experienced significant intestinal bloating, vomiting, irreducibility of the umbilical hernia, skin pigmentation, and erythema at the umbilical site within 2 days after hospitalization. When there was no free abdominal air, a direct abdominal x-ray revealed evidence of hydro-gas stasis and various hydro-aerial levels that were pertinent to the ileum. In order to reduce the hernia, the patient had an emergency surgical treatment where the hernia sac was isolated and released from the ileal loop, which was securely attached to a fibrin plate. When the herniary sac was opened, a gangrenous and perforated appendix was found inside. On the seventh postoperative day, the patient was released from the hospital after an uncomplicated postoperative stay.
CONCLUSION
Our patient's clinical presentation is similar to that of only one other case report involving a 25-day-old male patient. Our case presented with a variant of the clinical symptoms of the previously described umbilical hernia, which became unfixable and strangulated as a result of appendix inflammation. The appendix was discovered inside the hernia sac during surgery.

At the end of 2020, an outbreak of HPAI H5N8 was registered in captive African houbara bustards (Chlamydotis undulata) in the United Arab Emirates. In order to better understand the pathobiology of this viral infection in bustards, a comprehensive pathological characterization was performed. A total of six birds were selected for necropsy, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, RNAscope in situ hybridization and RT-qPCR and nanopore sequencing on formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue blocks. Gross lesions included mottled and/or hemorrhagic pancreas, spleen and liver and fibrinous deposits on air sacs and intestine. Necrotizing pancreatitis, splenitis and concurrent vasculitis, hepatitis and fibrino-heterophilic peritonitis were identified, microscopically. Viral antigens (nucleoprotein) and RNAs (matrix gene) were both detected within necro-inflammatory foci, parenchymal cells, stromal cells and endothelial cells of affected organs, including the myenteric plexus. Molecular analysis of FFPE blocks successfully detected HPAI H5N8, further confirming its involvement in the lesions observed. In conclusion, HPAI H5N8 in African houbara bustards results in hyperacute/acute forms exhibiting marked pantropism, endotheliotropism and neurotropism. In addition, our findings support the use of FFPE tissues for molecular studies of poorly characterized pathogens in exotic and endangered species, when availability of samples is limited.

Marsupials are born with structurally immature lungs when compared to eutherian mammals. The gray short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) is born at the late canalicular stage of lung development. Despite the high degree of immaturity, the lung is functioning as respiratory organ, however supported by the skin for gas exchange during the first postnatal days. Consequently, the majority of lung development takes place in ventilated functioning state during the postnatal period. Microcomputed tomography (μCT) was used to three-dimensionally reconstruct the terminal air spaces in order to reveal the timeline of lung morphogenesis. In addition, lung and air space volume as well as surface area were determined to assess the functional relevance of the structural changes in the developing lung. The development of the terminal air spaces was examined in 35 animals from embryonic day 13, during the postnatal period (neonate to 57 days) and in adults. At birth, the lung of Monodelphis domestica consists of few large terminal air spaces, which are poorly subdivided and open directly from short lobar bronchioles. During the first postnatal week the number of smaller terminal air spaces increases and numerous septal ridges indicate a process of subdivision, attaining the saccular stage by 7 postnatal days. The 3D reconstructions of the terminal air spaces demonstrated massive increases in air sac number and architectural complexity during the postnatal period. Between 28 and 35 postnatal days alveolarization started. Respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts and a typical acinus developed. The volume of the air spaces and the surface area for gas exchange increased markedly with alveolarization. The structural transformation from large terminal sacs to the final alveolar lung in the gray short-tailed opossum follows similar patterns as described in other marsupial and placental mammals. The processes involved in sacculation and alveolarization during lung development seem to be highly conservative within mammalian evolution.

A 12-year-old male eclectus parrot () was referred for evaluation of coelomic distention. Computed tomography and blood work revealed coelomic effusion with free coelomic mineral-attenuating material and elevations in the bile acids and aspartate aminotransferase activity, respectively. Coelomic effusion was consistent with macrophagic inflammation with abundant intracellular lipids. Initial treatment with meloxicam resulted in minimal patient improvement. Disseminated xanthogranulomatous inflammation was suspected based on imaging and diagnostic laboratory results, which were consistent with those previously reported. Biopsy samples of liver tissue and intracoelomic masses confirmed this diagnosis. Treatment was initiated with prednisolone 1 mg/kg/d for 6 months, followed by 0.5 mg/kg/d for 3 months. Clinical improvement was assessed based on owner evaluation, plasma bile acid concentrations, and repeated computed tomographic scans. After 2 months of treatment, the owner reported improved behavior and appetite; this persisted throughout treatment and when the bird was reexamined 17 months following the cessation of steroid therapy. Bile acid concentrations were normal 10 months after the prednisolone therapy was discontinued. Diagnostic imaging showed minimal coelomic effusion 10 months after the last prednisolone dose was administered, with improved ventilation of the air sacs and static to improved dystrophic mineral foci. This report describes the antemortem diagnosis and treatment of disseminated coelomic xanthogranulomatous disease in a psittacine species, with an observed measurable therapeutic response.
