Sprayed Urine Emits a Pungent Odor due to its Increased Adhesion to Vertical Objects via Urinary Proteins Rather Than to Changes in its Volatile Chemical Profile in Domestic Cats.
Spraying urine on vertical objects by raising the tail is a commonly observed functional behavior for chemical communication in Felidae species, including domestic cats (Felis silvestris catus). The sprayed urine is recognized as a chemical signal for territorial ownership of their habitats. Previous studies reported that sprayed urine emits a more pungent odor than urine excreted from a squatting position. However, little is known about how sprayed urine acts as a strong scent mark in the environment. Here, we showed that sprayed urine originates only from bladder urine without any secretions, such as anal sac secretions, but it can effectively emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when smeared on vertical objects due to its strong adhesion. Chemical profiles of VOCs and odor qualities were similar between fresh sprayed urine and bladder urine sampled immediately after spraying from the same individuals. Meanwhile, feline-specific proteinuria arising from excretion of a carboxylesterase that produces a precursor of cat-specific odorants resulted in reduced surface tension of the urine and increased adhesion to vertical surfaces, which kept sprayed urine on the surfaces and led to the emission of large amounts of VOCs. In conclusion, proteinuria contributes to the emission of a strong odor through its enhanced adhesion to vertical objects without other secretions containing malodorous substances. These findings improve our understanding of the mechanism of scent marking via the spraying of urine for chemical communication in cats.

Histopathological diagnosis and surgical complications following bilateral anal sacculectomy for the treatment of unilateral canine apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma: 35 cases (2019-2023).
OBJECTIVES
To report the histopathological diagnosis of both anal sacs in dogs undergoing bilateral anal sacculectomy for the treatment of unilateral apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma and to compare the surgical complication rate associated with this procedure in this population with previously published literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Records were retrospectively reviewed for dogs that underwent bilateral anal sacculectomy for the treatment of apparently unilateral apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma, at a single institute between 2019 and 2023. Clinical staging, surgical treatment, histological findings, intra- and postoperative complications were evaluated.
RESULTS
Thirty-five dogs were included. Only five of 35 (14%) dogs were found to have histologically normal contralateral anal sacs. Non-neoplastic anal sac disease was found in 23 of 35 (66%) dogs and bilateral apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma was seen in seven of 35 (20%) dogs. None of the dogs diagnosed with bilateral neoplasia had evidence of bilateral neoplasia before surgery despite a thorough work-up. Complications attributable to the primary tumour removal were seen in 9% of dogs intraoperatively and 14% of dogs postoperatively, commonly tumour capsule disruption and surgical site infection, respectively.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Bilateral anal sac disease was diagnosed histologically in the majority of presumed normal anal sacs, with 20% of cases being found to have bilateral apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma. The surgical complication rates of this cohort were comparable to those reported for unilateral anal sacculectomy alone. These findings promote and encourage the use of bilateral anal sacculectomy in cases of suspected unilateral anal sac neoplasia.

To clarify the allometric growth pattern and hunger tolerance of Bleeker larvae, the morphological lengths of their functional organs were measured continuously and their primary feeding rates under a state of starvation were studied. A control group and starvation group were set up for this study, and 10 larvae were sampled from each group every day in order to study their allometric growth pattern and starvation tolerance. The results indicated that the larvae opened their mouths for feeding at 4 days after hatching, and that the yolk sac disappeared completely at 11 days after hatching. The larvae preferentially developed their heads, fins, and eyes, related to the functions of feeding, balancing, and swimming, in order to cope with complex environments. The growth inflection points for the head length, pectoral fin length, dorsal fin length, eye diameter, eye spacing, snout length, and body height were characterized by total lengths of 10.93 mm, 11.67 mm, 11.67 mm, 13.17 mm, 16.53 mm, 15.13 mm, and 15.13 mm, respectively. Prior to and following the inflection point, positive allometric growth was observed in all organs. After the inflection point, the dorsal fin continued to maintain positive allometric growth, while the others changed to isometric allometric growth. A growth inflection point was not observed for trunk length or the lengths of the tail and anal fins. The trunk length always maintained negative allometry, while the tail and anal fin lengths were reversed. The growth inflection point of the tail length was at a total length of 13.68 mm. Before and after the growth inflection point, negative and isometric allometric growths were observed, respectively. According to the relationship between the total length and number of days after hatching, the growth inflection point of the larvae was concentrated at TL = 10.93-16.53 mm, which was observed 14-20 days after hatching. The point of no return for the larvae was 12-13 days after hatching, and the ratio of days after hatching in the mixed trophic period to the endotrophic period was 1.75, indicating that the larvae had strong hunger tolerance. Therefore, when considering a water temperature of 22.66 ± 1.56 °C, 4-5 days after hatching is the best time to cultivate in the pond, and it should not be carried out later than 12 days after hatching.

OBJECTIVE
To evaluate the postoperative complication rate and local recurrence rate of apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma (AGASACA) in dogs surgically treated with a modified closed anal sacculectomy technique between 2015 and 2022.
STUDY DESIGN
Observational clinical retrospective study.
ANIMAL POPULATION
Forty-seven client-owned dogs histologically diagnosed with AGASACA.
METHODS
Medical records were evaluated for patient demographics and history, physical examination findings, diagnostic imaging, incidence of concurrent neoplasia, postoperative complications, and incidence and time to local recurrence. Dogs with at least 150 days of follow-up were included in evaluation of local recurrence.
RESULTS
Two dogs were euthanized at 4 and 11 days after surgery. Forty-five dogs were included for long-term local recurrence evaluation, with a median of 364 days of follow-up (range 156-2156 days). Only one dog (2.2%) developed local recurrence with a time to recurrence of 90 days. Postoperative complications were reported in 15 dogs (31.9%) and were considered minor in 14 dogs (93.3%) and major in one dog (6.7%). Mean survival time for the 20 dogs that were deceased as of November 1, 2022 was 521 days (range 156-1409 days) and the median survival time was 388 days.
CONCLUSION
The modified closed anal sacculectomy technique resulted in a lower AGASACA local recurrence rate than previously reported in the veterinary literature with a comparable postoperative complication rate.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Given the low recurrence rate found in this study, the modified closed anal sacculectomy technique may reduce the need for adjuvant radiation therapy and potentially chemotherapy in AGASACA patients.

The development of novel catalyst with high catalytic activity is important for electrochemical non-enzymatic glucose sensing. Here, iridium single-atom/nickel oxide nanoparticle/N-doped graphene nanosheet (Ir/NiO/NG) with the loading of 1.13 wt% Ir was successfully synthesized for constructing electrochemical non-enzymatic glucose sensor for the first time. The morphology and structure of Ir/NiO/NG were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, and XPS, and the presence of Ir SAs was confirmed by AC-HAADF-STEM. The Ir/NiO/NG shows 65 mV lower oxidation potential and 3.3 times higher response current than Ni(OH)/NG. In addition, Ir/NiO/NG exhibits high sensitivity (70.09 μA mM cm), excellent selectivity, low detection limit (2.00 μM), and great stability (91.53% current remaining after 21 days) for electrochemical non-enzymatic glucose sensing. The outstanding catalytic and sensing performance of Ir/NiO/NG is mainly attributed to synergistic effect of Ir SAs, NiO nanoparticles, and highly conductive NG, which modulate the electronic and geometric structure of Ir/NiO/NG. This work shows the promising potential of SACs in electrochemical sensing.

BACKGROUND
The advancement of highly sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensors has garnered escalating interest over time. Owing to the distinctive physicochemical attributes, the signal amplification strategy facilitated by functional nanomaterials has achieved notable milestones. Single-atom catalysts (SACs), featuring atomically dispersed metal active sites, have garnered significant attention. SACs offer unprecedented control over active sites and surface structures at the atomic level. However, to fully harness their potential, ongoing efforts focus on strategies to enhance the catalytic performance of SACs, profoundly influencing both the sensitivity and selectivity of SACs-based sensing platforms.
RESULTS
In this study, we focused on the synthesis and application of Fe-Co-PNC dual-atom catalysts (DACs) with the incorporation of phosphorus, aiming to enhance catalytic efficiency, particularly in the context of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) correlated cathodic luminol ECL. The synergistic effects arising from the combination of Fe and Co in DACs were explored by ECL emission. Comparative studies with Fe-PNC SACs highlighted the superior catalytic performance of Fe-Co-PNC DACs. The ECL sensing platform exhibited excellent sensitivity, which provided a fast detection of Trolox with a wide linear range (0.1 μM-1.0 mM) and a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.03 μM. The platform demonstrated remarkable reproducibility and long-term stability, showcasing its potential for practical biosensing applications.
SIGNIFICANCE
This study introduced the novel concept of Fe-Co-PNC DACs. The demonstrated synergistic effects and enhanced catalytic efficiency of DACs offer new avenues for the rational design of advanced catalysts. The successful application in the sensitive detection of Trolox emphasizes their potential significance in biosensing. It not only expands our understanding of SACs but also opens doors for the development of efficient and stable catalysts with broader applications.

BACKGROUND
Shih Tzus are a popular dog breed in the UK although there is relatively little reported information on their health. This study aimed to characterise the demography, common disorders and mortality of Shih Tzus under primary veterinary care during 2016 in the UK using de-identified clinical records from the VetCompass™ Programme.
RESULTS
The study population of 336,865 dogs under veterinary care during 2016 included 11,082 Shih Tzus (3.3%). The median age was 4.1 years (IQR: 2.1-7.1, range: 0.3-20.4) and mean adult bodyweight was 7.9 kg (SD: 1.9 kg). Annual proportional births increased from 2.2% of all dog births in 2005 to 3.8% in 2013, dropping to 3.3% by 2016. From a random subset of 2,423 Shih Tzus that had information extracted on disorders diagnosed during 2016, the most prevalent fine-level precision disorders were periodontal disease (n = 229, prevalence 9.5%, 95% CI: 8.4-10.7), anal sac impaction (180, 7.4%, 95% CI: 6.5-8.5) and ear disorders (134, 5.5%, 95% CI: 4.7-6.5). The most prevalent grouped-level precision disorders were cutaneous (n = 402, prevalence: 16.6%, 95% CI: 15.2-18.1), dental (322, 13.3%, 95% CI: 12.0-14.7), and ophthalmological (289, 11.9%, 95% CI: 10.7-13.3). Males were more likely than females to be diagnosed with skin disorders (P = 0.007) and musculoskeletal disorders (P = 0.010) while females were more likely than males to be diagnosed with hernias (P = 0.005). The median age of death was 12.7 years (IQR 8.7-14.3, range 2.0-19.9) and did not differ statistically between males and females. The most common grouped causes of death were enteropathy (7.9%, 95% CI: 3.9-15.4), heart disease (7.9%, 95% CI: 3.9-15.4) and poor quality of life (7.9%, 95% CI: 3.9-15.4).
CONCLUSIONS
Periodontal disease, anal sac impaction and ear disorders were identified as common health issues. Shih Tzus had higher prevalence of anal sac impaction, umbilical hernias and eye problems than reported previously in dogs overall, suggesting potential predispositions. Shih Tzus appear to be relatively long-lived compared to previous reports of lifespan in dogs overall. The results can inform veterinarians and owners on priority disorders for monitoring to protect welfare. Oral hygiene was highlighted as a healthcare priority.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs), specifically iron single atoms dispersed on nitrogen-doped carbon (Fe-NC), have shown promising potential in the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia (NitRR), but there is a lack of understanding of their intrinsic activity. The conventional measurements often overlook the intrinsic performance of SACs, leading to significant underestimation. This study presents an in situ electrochemical probing protocol, using two poisoning molecules (SCN and NO), to characterize the reactivity of Fe sites in Fe-NC SACs for NitRR. The technique aids in quantifying the yield rate of ammonia on Fe sites and the active site number. The findings reveal the intrinsic turnover frequency (TOF) based on the number and ammonia yield rate of Fe sites, challenging the current understanding of SACs' inherent performances. This unique approach holds considerable potential for determining the intrinsic activity of other SACs in complex reactions, opening new avenues for the exploration of electrocatalytic processes.

In this case report, we describe the presentation, diagnosis, and outcome of septic peritonitis secondary to neoplasia in patients lacking evidence of gastrointestinal content leakage, liver abscessation, or other treatment-associated risk factors. Two dogs presented with a diagnosis of neoplasia and nonspecific clinical signs such as lethargy, hyporexia, vomiting, and discomfort that was localized to the abdomen. The diagnoses at presentation consisted of a perianal tumor consistent with apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma and systemic mastocytosis. Neither of the dogs was considered systemically immunocompromised or had received recent cytotoxic chemotherapy treatment or surgical procedures. A common finding on blood work in the two dogs was the presence of band neutrophils. The diagnosis of septic peritonitis via fluid analysis and cytology was delayed in both cases. No treatment for the supposed underlying cause of septic peritonitis was pursued and euthanasia was pursued in both cases owing to poor prognosis. On necropsy, one dog was suspected to have developed septic peritonitis because of an abscessed lymph node, and in the other case, no definitive source was identified. Septic peritonitis can arise secondary to neoplasia that is not primarily involving the liver or gastrointestinal tract in canine patients that lack treatment-associated risk factors.

For dogs with anal sac adenocarcinoma (ASAC), metastasis to intra-abdominal and pelvic lymph nodes occurs early in the disease course. Death is usually related to locoregional progression. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice, but may not be possible in advanced cases. Dogs treated with RT in the gross disease setting showed a 38%-75% overall response rate, but side effects to organs at risk in this area (especially the colon, bladder, and spinal cord) were reported. Stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT) utilizes highly conformal treatment planning with rapid dose fall-off and hypofractionation. SRT may help to reduce the risk of late side effects of radiation while also creating a larger biological effect on ASACs. A primary aim of this prospective, descriptive, exploratory study was to describe the safety and feasibility of an SRT protocol in a small sample of dogs with ASAC, using objective and subjective measures to monitor acute and late side effects. A secondary aim was to describe the anti-tumor response of the SRT protocol using CT at 3- and 6 months posttreatment. Five dogs completed the radiation protocol. Four had follow-up CT characteristics of complete response (1), partial response (2), and stable disease (1). Minimal acute side effects were observed. Despite some large tumor volumes, constraints for OAR were achieved in all but the spinal cord for one patient. Findings indicated that SRT is a safe and feasible treatment for dogs with ACAC. Future studies are warranted to compare patient outcomes for SRT versus other treatments.
