We performed a detailed ultrastructural reconstruction of the "passive" miracidium of Derogenes varicus Muller, 1784 , a species from Hemiurata group. The miracidium is highly miniaturized and simplified in comparison with the "active" miracidia. For the first time we elucidate the nature of the spines on the surface of hemiuroid larva: they are derivatives of the epithelial plates. The anterior end of the larva is equipped with three epithelial plates that bear both spines and cilia. The major part of the miracidial surface is formed by tegument. The nervous and excretory systems of the D. varicus miracidium are extremely reduced. Single undifferentiated cell comprises the germinal material of the miracidium. We discuss the trends of evolution of hemiuroid miracidia that are associated with transition to passive strategy of infection.

In dynamic impact events, thoracic injuries often involve rib fractures, which are closely related to injury severity. Previous studies have investigated the behavior of isolated ribs under impact loading conditions, but often neglected the variability in anatomical shape and tissue material properties. In this study, we used probabilistic finite element analysis and statistical shape modeling to investigate the effect of population-wide variability in rib cortical bone tissue mechanical properties and rib shape on the biomechanical response of the rib to impact loading. Using the probabilistic finite element analysis results, a response surface model was generated to rapidly investigate the biomechanical response of an isolated rib under dynamic anterior-posterior load given the variability in rib morphometry and tissue material properties. The response surface was used to generate pre-fracture force-displacement computational corridors for the overall population and a population sub-group of older mid-sized males. When compared to the experimental data, the computational mean response had a RMSE of 4.28N (peak force 94N) and 6.11N (peak force 116N) for the overall population and sub-group respectively, whereas the normalized area metric when comparing the experimental and computational corridors ranged from 3.32% to 22.65% for the population and 10.90% to 32.81% for the sub-group. Furthermore, probabilistic sensitivities were computed in which the contribution of uncertainty and variability of the parameters of interest was quantified. The study found that rib cortical bone elastic modulus, rib morphometry and cortical thickness are the random variables that produce the largest variability in the predicted force-displacement response. The proposed framework offers a novel approach for accounting biological variability in a representative population and has the potential to improve the generalizability of findings in biomechanical studies.

The fine structure of echiurid blood vessels in the proboscis is known in detail, but the circulatory system of the trunk is still understood mainly at the level of general anatomy. The trunk circulatory system was studied in Bonellia viridis females, and specialized podocytes were found to form the walls of the ring vessel and the anterior part of the ventral vessel. Podocytes were for the first time described in the echiurid circulatory system. Podocytes of B. viridis displayed a typical cell architecture, which is known for other bilaterians. A podocyte consists of a cell body; primary processes; and pedicels, which extend from the primary processes and are interconnected via specialized slit diaphragms. The presence of podocytes indicates that the ventral and ring vessels act as ultrafiltration sites, where the plasma is filtered through the basal lamina into the body cavity.

Music is a powerful medium that influences our emotions and memories. Neuroscience research has demonstrated music's ability to engage brain regions associated with emotion, reward, motivation, and autobiographical memory. While music's role in modulating emotions has been explored extensively, our study investigates whether music can alter the emotional content of memories. Building on the theory that memories can be updated upon retrieval, we tested whether introducing emotional music during memory recollection might introduce false emotional elements into the original memory trace. We developed a 3-day episodic memory task with separate encoding, recollection, and retrieval phases. Our primary hypothesis was that emotional music played during memory recollection would increase the likelihood of introducing novel emotional components into the original memory. Behavioral findings revealed two key outcomes: 1) participants exposed to music during memory recollection were more likely to incorporate novel emotional components congruent with the paired music valence, and 2) memories retrieved 1 day later exhibited a stronger emotional tone than the original memory, congruent with the valence of the music paired during the previous day's recollection. Furthermore, fMRI results revealed altered neural engagement during story recollection with music, including the amygdala, anterior hippocampus, and inferior parietal lobule. Enhanced connectivity between the amygdala and other brain regions, including the frontal and visual cortex, was observed during recollection with music, potentially contributing to more emotionally charged story reconstructions. These findings illuminate the interplay between music, emotion, and memory, offering insights into the consequences of infusing emotional music into memory recollection processes.

European Spine Journal : Official... Jul 2024This study was a retrospective multi-center comparative cohort study.
STUDY DESIGN
This study was a retrospective multi-center comparative cohort study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A retrospective institutional database of operative adult spinal deformity patients was utilized. All fusions > 5 vertebral levels and including the sacrum/pelvis were eligible for inclusion. Revisions, 3 column osteotomies, and patients with < 2-year clinical follow-up were excluded. Patients were separated into 3 groups based on surgical approach: 1) posterior spinal fusion without interbody (PSF), 2) PSF with interbody (PSF-IB), and 3) anteroposterior (AP) fusion (anterior lumbar interbody fusion or lateral lumbar interbody fusion with posterior screw fixation). Intraoperative, radiographic, and clinical outcomes, as well as complications, were compared between groups with ANOVA and χ tests.
RESULTS
One-hundred and thirty-eight patients were included for study (PSF, n = 37; PSF-IB, n = 44; AP, n = 57). Intraoperatively, estimated blood loss was similar between groups (p = 0.171). However, the AP group had longer operative times (547.5 min) compared to PSF (385.1) and PSF-IB (370.7) (p < 0.001). Additionally, fusion length was shorter in PSF-IB (11.4) compared to AP (13.6) and PSF (12.9) (p = 0.004). There were no differences between the groups in terms of change in alignment from preoperative to 2 years postoperative. There were no differences in clinical outcomes. While postoperative complications were largely similar between groups, operative complications were higher in the AP group (31.6%) compared to the PSF (5.4%) and PSF-IB (9.1) groups (p < 0.001).
CONCLUSION
While there were differences in intraoperative outcomes (operative time and fusion length), there were no differences in postoperative clinical or radiographic outcomes. AP fusion was associated with a higher rate of operative complications.

OBJECTIVE
To compare the clinical efficacy of anterior column reconstruction using single or double titanium mesh cage (TMC) after total en bloc spondylectomy (TES) of thoracic and lumbar spinal tumors.
METHODS
A retrospective cohort study was performed involving 39 patients with thoracic or lumbar spinal tumors. All patients underwent TES, followed by anterior reconstruction and screw-rod instrumentation via a posterior-only procedure. Twenty-two patients in group A were treated with a single TMC to reconstruct the anterior column, whereas 17 patients in group B were reconstructed with double TMCs.
RESULTS
The overall follow-up is 20.5 ± 4.6 months. There is no significant difference between the 2 groups regarding age, sex, body mass index, tumor location, operative time, and intraoperative blood loss. The time for TMC placement was significantly shortened in the double TMCs group (5.2 ± 1.3 minutes vs. 15.6 ± 3.3 minutes, p = 0.004). Additionally, postoperative neural complications were significantly reduced with double TMCs (5/22 vs. 0/17, p = 0.046). The kyphotic Cobb angle and mean intervertebral height were significantly corrected in both groups (p ≤ 0.001), without obvious loss of correction at the last follow-up in either group. The bone fusion rates for single TMC and double TMCs were 77.3% and 76.5%, respectively.
CONCLUSION
Using 2 smaller TMCs instead of a single large one eases the placement of TMC by shortening the time and avoiding nerve impingement. Anterior column reconstruction with double TMC is a clinically feasible, and safe alternative following TES for thoracic and lumbar tumors.

OBJECTIVE
Cervical hybrid surgery optimizes the use of cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) and zero-profile (ZOP) devices in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) but lacks uniform combination and biomechanical standards, especially in revision surgery (RS). This study aimed to investigate the biomechanical characteristics of adjacent segments of the different hybrid RS constructs in ACDF RS.
METHODS
An intact 3-dimensional finite element model generated a normal cervical spine (C2-T1). This model was modified to the primary C5-6 ACDF model. Three RS models were created to treat C4-5 adjacent segment degeneration through implanting cages plus plates (Cage-Cage), ZOP devices (ZOP-Cage), or Bryan discs (CDA-Cage). A 1.0-Nm moment was applied to the primary C5-6 ACDF model to generate total C2-T1 range of motions (ROMs). Subsequently, a displacement load was applied to all RS models to match the total C2-T1 ROMs of the primary ACDF model.
RESULTS
The ZOP-Cage model showed lower biomechanical responses including ROM, intradiscal pressure, maximum von Mises stress in discs, and facet joint force in adjacent segments compared to the Cage-Cage model. The CDA-Cage model exhibited the lowest biomechanical responses and ROM ratio at adjacent segments among all RS models, closely approached or lower than those in the primary ACDF model in most motion directions. Additionally, the maximum von Mises stress on the C3-4 and C6-7 discs increased in the Cage-Cage and ZOP-Cage models but decreased in the CDA-Cage model when compared to the primary ACDF model.
CONCLUSION
The CDA-Cage construct had the lowest biomechanical responses with minimal kinematic change of adjacent segments. ZOP-Cage is the next best choice, especially if CDA is not suitable. This study provides a biomechanical reference for clinical hybrid RS decision-making to reduce the risk of ASD recurrence.

OBJECTIVE
The study compared the morphometric changes of the cervical spinal cord using dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) and assessed the correlation with kinematic changes, cord cross-sectional area (CSA), and high signal intensity (SI) on T2-weighted imaging (T2WI).
METHODS
Patients with CSM were evaluated through dynamic MRI for sagittal and axial CSA changes of the cervical cord, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) reserve ratio, degree of cord impingement, cord compression rate, range of motion (ROM), and severity of SI on T2WI. The degree of cord impingement was evaluated using the Muhle grading system. Clinical outcomes were assessed using Japanese Orthopaedic Association scoring and Nurick grade.
RESULTS
The study included 191 patients (113 males) with a mean age of 55.34 ± 12.09 years. The lowest sagittal CSF reserve ratio and cord occupation rate were observed during extension. Cord impingement and SI change were more prevalent in extension-positioned MRI. There was no difference between ROM on dynamic radiographs and dynamic MRI. Preoperative cervical ROM was greater in patients with intensely high SI change.
CONCLUSION
Dynamic MRI is useful for evaluating neck movement. Patients with high SI had greater ROM before surgery but worse outcomes after. Neck extension exacerbated cervical stenosis and cord compression compared to flexion, and cervical spinal motion contributed to the severity of CSM. Cervical spinal motion should be carefully evaluated, particularly in hyperextension, to prevent worsening of CSM.

A number of hardware-based and software-based strategies have been suggested to eliminate motion artifacts for improvement of 3D-optical coherence tomography (OCT) image quality. However, the hardware-based strategies have to employ additional hardware to record motion compensation information. Many software-based strategies have to need additional scanning for motion correction at the expense of longer acquisition time. To address this issue, we propose a motion artifacts correction and motion estimation method for OCT volumetric imaging of anterior segment, without requirements of additional hardware and redundant scanning. The motion correction effect with subpixel accuracy for in vivo 3D-OCT has been demonstrated in experiments. Moreover, the physiological information of imaging object, including respiratory curve and respiratory rate, has been experimentally extracted using the proposed method. The proposed method offers a powerful tool for scientific research and clinical diagnosis in ophthalmology and may be further extended for other biomedical volumetric imaging applications.
