BACKGROUND
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and microwave ablation (MWA) are the most frequently used percutaneous ablation techniques for the treatment of liver cancer. The aim of our study was to identify the ablation method that had a better long-term prognosis for patients with cirrhotic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
METHODS
This retrospective study consisted of HCC patients with cirrhosis who underwent RFA and MWA between January 2014 to December 2021 at Beijing You'an Hospital. Patients were divided into two groups according to the therapeutic approaches: the RFA group and the MWA group. The prognosis was compared before and after 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM).
RESULTS
A total of 800 HCC patients with cirrhosis who received interventional treatment from January 2014 to December 2021 were prospectively enrolled. After PSM, there were 268 patients in each of the RFA and MWA groups. The statistically significant differences in recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) between RFA and MWA groups can be observed, both before and after PSM. Besides, 1-, 3-year RFS, and 5-year OS rates were higher in those the RFA group than in the MWA group. Age, tumor size, gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT), and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) were independent risk factors for RFS. Child-Pugh, lymphocyte (Lym), GGT, and treatment modality were independent risk factors for OS.
CONCLUSIONS
For patients with HCC associated with cirrhosis, RFA can provide a better prognosis than MWA, with lower recurrence and mortality rate.

To evaluate the long-term efficacy of percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma. 2054 cases with Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage 0~B at the Fifth Medical Center of the Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital from January 2006 to September 2020 were retrospectively collected. All patients were followed up for at least 2 years. The primary endpoint of overall survival and secondary endpoints (tumor-related survival, disease-free survival, and postoperative complications) of patients treated with ultrasound-guided percutaneous MWA were analyzed. Kaplan-Meier method was used for stratified survival rate analysis. Fine-and-Gray competing risk model was used to analyze overall survival. A total of 5 503 HCC nodules [mean tumor diameter (2.6±1.6) cm] underwent 3 908 MWAs between January 2006 and September 2020, with a median follow-up time of 45.6 (24.0 -79.2) months.The technical effectiveness rate of 5 375 tumor nodules was 97.5%. The overall survival rates at 5, 10, and 15-years were 61.6%, 38.8%, and 27.0%, respectively. The tumor-specific survival rates were 67.1%, 47.2%, and 37.7%, respectively. The free tumor survival rates were 25.8%, 15.7%, and 9.9%, respectively. The incidence rate of severe complications was 2.8% (108/3 908). Further analysis showed that the technical effectiveness and survival rate over the passing three time periods from January 2006-2010, 2011-2015, and 2016-September 2020 were significantly increased, with < 0.001, especially for liver cancer 3.1~5.0 cm ( < 0.001). Microwave ablation therapy is a safe and effective method for BCLC stage 0-B, with significantly enhanced technical efficacy and survival rate over time.

Focused microwave breast hyperthermia (FMBH) employs a phased antenna array to perform beamforming that can focus microwave energy at targeted breast tumors. Selective heating of the tumor endows the hyperthermia treatment with high accuracy and low side effects. The effect of FMBH is highly dependent on the applied phased antenna array. This work investigates the effect of polarizations of antenna elements on the microwave-focusing results by simulations. We explore two kinds of antenna arrays with the same number of elements using different digital realistic human breast phantoms. The first array has all the elements' polarization in the vertical plane of the breast, while the second array has half of the elements' polarization in the vertical plane and the other half in the transverse plane, i.e., cross polarization. In total, 96 sets of different simulations are performed, and the results show that the second array leads to a better focusing effect in dense breasts than the first array. This work is very meaningful for the potential improvement of the antenna array for FMBH, which is of great significance for the future clinical applications of FMBH. The antenna array with cross polarization can also be applied in microwave imaging and sensing for biomedical applications.

Carbon quantum dots are a novel form of carbon material. They offer numerous benefits including particle size adjustability, light resistance, ease of functionalization, low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and high-water solubility, as well as their easy accessibility of raw materials. Carbon quantum dots have been widely used in various fields. The preparation methods employed are predominantly top-down methods such as arc discharge, laser ablation, electrochemical and chemical oxidation, as well as bottom-up methods such as templates, microwave, and hydrothermal techniques. This article provides an overview of the properties, preparation methods, raw materials for preparation, and the heteroatom doping of carbon quantum dots, and it summarizes the applications in related fields, such as optoelectronics, bioimaging, drug delivery, cancer therapy, sensors, and environmental remediation. Finally, currently encountered issues of carbon quantum dots are presented. The latest research progress in synthesis and application, as well as the challenges outlined in this review, can help and encourage future research on carbon quantum dots.

The aim of this study was to analyze the long-term results of different locoregional treatments for colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRLM), including transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), laser-induced thermotherapy (LITT) and microwave ablation (MWA). A total of 2140 patients with CRLM treated at our department between 1993 and 2020 were included in this retrospective study. The patients were divided into the following groups: LITT (573 patients; median age: 62 years), TACE + LITT (346 patients; median age: 62 years), MWA (67 patients; median age: 59 years), TACE + MWA (152 patients; median age: 65 years), and TACE (1002 patients; median age: 62 years). Median survival was 1.9 years in the LITT group and 1.7 years in the TACE + LITT group. The median survival times in the MWA group and TACE + MWA group were 3.1 years and 2.1 years, respectively. The median survival in the TACE group was 0.8 years. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates were 77%, 27%, and 9% in the LITT group and 74%, 18%, and 5% in the TACE + LITT group, respectively. The corresponding survival rates were 80%, 55%, and 33% in the MWA group, 74%, 36%, and 20% in the TACE + MWA group and 37%, 3%, and 0% in the TACE group, respectively. The long-term results of this study demonstrate the efficacy of locoregional treatments in treating patients with CRLM. The longest survival was found in the MWA group, followed by the combination therapy of TACE and MWA.

Commercial beef burgers and vegan analogues were purchased and, after a microwave treatment, they were submitted to an in vitro digestion (INFOGEST). Vegan cooked burgers showed similar protein content (16-17 %) but lower amounts of total peptides than beef burgers. The protein digestibility was higher in beef burgers. Peptide amounts increased during in vitro digestion, reaching similar amounts in both types of products in the micellar phase (bioaccessible fraction). The fat content in cooked vegan burgers was significantly lower than in beef burgers (16.7 and 21.2 %, respectively), with a higher amount of PUFAs and being the lipolysis activity, measure by FFA, less intense both after cooking and after the gastrointestinal process. Both types of cooked samples showed high carbonyl amounts (34.18 and 25.51 nmol/mg protein in beef and vegan samples, respectively), that decreased during in vitro digestion. On the contrary, lipid oxidation increased during gastrointestinal digestion, particularly in vegan samples. The antioxidant capacity (ABTS and DPPH) showed higher values for vegan products in cooked samples, but significantly decreased during digestion, reaching similar values for both types of products.

Maintenance treatment of immunotherapy after microwave ablation plus drug-eluting bead bronchial arterial chemoembolization for advanced non-small cell lung cancer: a retrospective single-center cohort study.
BACKGROUND
The combination therapy of immunotherapy and drug-eluting bead bronchial artery chemoembolization (DEB-BACE) or microwave ablation (MWA) has been attempted as an effective and safe approach for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the outcomes of immunotherapy plus multiple interventional techniques for advanced NSCLC remain unclear. This retrospective study thus aimed to investigate the effectiveness and safety of the maintenance treatment of programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) blockade after MWA plus DEB-BACE for advanced NSCLC.
METHODS
This retrospective cohort study consists of 95 patients with advanced NSCLC who were treated with DEB-BACE between April 2017 and October 2022 and who were allocated to three groups: group A (MWA + DEB-BACE + PD-1 blockade; n=15), group B (MWA + DEB-BACE; n=25), and group C (DEB-BACE alone; n=55). The adverse events (AEs) were compared between the three groups. The outcomes were compared via Kaplan-Meier methods, including median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Survival analyses were performed via the univariate and multivariate analyses to investigate the prognostic predictors.
RESULTS
The overall incidence of AEs in the groups A-C was 53.3% (8/15), 36.0% (9/25), and 32.7% (18/55), respectively, which did not represent a significant difference (P=0.42). No severe AEs (SAEs) occurred. Group A, compared with group B and group C, had a significantly longer estimated median PFS (33.0 7.0 3.0 months; P<0.001) and OS (33.0 13.0 6.0 months; P=0.002). PD-1 blockade (P=0.006), tumor number (P=0.01), and DEB-BACE/bronchial artery infusion (BAI) chemotherapy cycles (P=0.04) were identified as the predictors of PFS, while the predictors of OS were PD-1 blockade (P<0.001), number of metastases (P<0.001), tumor diameter (P<0.001), and DEB-BACE/BAI cycles (P=0.02).
CONCLUSIONS
Compared with that of advanced NSCLC treated with MWA plus DEB-BACE or DEB-BACE alone, the maintenance treatment of immunotherapy after MWA plus DEB-BACE might provide a superior prognosis without increasing the risk of AEs.

BACKGROUND
Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is the most common mesenchymal tumor of the digestive tract, with the potential to metastasize. Metastases to bone and soft tissue are more frequent in advanced cases, where targeted therapy is the standard treatment. However, around 10-15% of patients develop disease progression despite treatment. Studies have shown the efficacy of ablation in managing bone and soft tissue metastases (1, 2), but there are no reports of ablation for treating GIST bone or soft tissue metastases.
CASE PRESENTATION
In 2022, a 58-year-old man complaining of left back pain was admitted to Sichuan Cancer Hospital. He had undergone radical resection of the primary gastric GIST and vertebral metastases in 2014 and 2018, respectively. In 2019, rib metastases still occurred despite the use of targeted therapy. During the course of radiotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, he experienced persistent chest wall pain. In addition, new lesions occurred in the lungs and chest wall in 2022. After a thorough assessment, microwave ablation (MWA) was recommended in response to his demand for immediate pain relief. The large rib metastasis constricted the spleen, so we completed the ablation in two sessions to reduce the risk of complications. He had 17 months of follow-up until September 2023, during which time his discomfort was considerably reduced.
CONCLUSION
For GIST patients with soft tissue and bone metastases, MWA may offer substantial immediate pain alleviation. When other treatment procedures fail to achieve adequate efficacy, it provides an option.

Laparoscopic-assisted microwave ablation (LAMWA), as one of the locoregional therapies, has been employed to treat hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study aims to compare the efficacy and safety of LAMWA and laparoscopic hepatectomy in the treatment of small HCC.This study included 140 patients who met the inclusion criteria. Among them, 68 patients received LAMWA and 72 patients underwent laparoscopic hepatectomy. The perioperative condition, liver function recovery, the alpha fetoprotein (AFP) level, morbidities, hospitalization time, overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS) and recurrence rate between the two groups were compared. The rate of complete elimination of tumor tissue was 100% and the AFP level was returned to normal within 3 months after surgery in both groups (P > 0.05). The mean alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) peak in the LAMWA group was lower than that in the laparoscopic hepatectomy group (259.51 ± 188.75 VS 388.9 ± 173.65, P = 0.000) and (267.34 ± 190.65 VS 393.1 ± 185.67, P = 0.000), respectively. The mean operation time in the LAMWA group was shorter than that in the laparoscopic hepatectomy group (89 ± 31 min VS 259 ± 48 min, P = 0.000). The blood loss in the LAMWA group was less than that in the laparoscopic hepatectomy group (58.4 ± 64.0 ml VS 213.0 ± 108.2 ml, P = 0.000). Compared with the laparoscopic hepatectomy group, patients in the LAMWA group had lower mean hospital stay (4.8 ± 1.2d VS 11.5 ± 2.9d, P = 0.000). The morbidities of the LAMWA group and the hepatectomy group were 14.7%(10/68) and 34.7%(25/72), respectively (P = 0.006). The one-, three-, and five-year OS rates were 88.2%, 69.9%, 45.6% for the LAMWA group and 86.1%, 72.9%, 51.4% for the laparoscopic hepatectomy group (P = 0.693). The corresponding DFS rates for the two groups were 76.3%, 48.1%, 27.9% and 73.2%, 56.7%, 32.0% (P = 0.958). Laparoscopic-assisted microwave ablation is a safe and effective therapeutic option for selected small HCC.
