Mucilage is a natural source of polysaccharides that has recently attracted attention for use in biomaterial production. It attracts attention with its easy and fast extraction, biocompatibility, high water retention capacity, and biodegradability. Although there are studies on the characterization of mucilage obtained from different plant sources, the interaction of this polymer with other polymers and its potential to form new biomaterials have not yet been sufficiently investigated. Based on this, in this study, the potential of mucilage extracted from flaxseed for the production of cryogels for tissue engineering applications was demonstrated. Firstly, yield, basic physicochemical properties, morphology, and surface charge-dependent isoelectric point determination studies were carried out for the characterization of the extracted mucilage. The successful preparation of mucilage was evaluated for the construction of cryo-scaffolds and 3D, spongy, and porous structures were obtained in the presence of chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol polymers. A heterogeneous morphology with interconnected macro and micro porosity in the range of approximately 85-115 m pore diameter was exhibited. Due to the high hydrophilic structure of the mucilage, which is attached to the structure with weak hydrogen bonds, the contact angle values of the scaffolds were obtained below 80° and they showed the ability to absorb 1000 times their dry weight in approximately 30 min. As a preliminary optimization study for the evaluation of mucilage in cryogel formation, this work introduced a new construct to be developed as wound dressing scaffold for deep and chronic wounds.

In recent years, liquid crystal materials have drawn great interest because of their wide range of applications. Among various thermochromic materials, cholesteric liquid crystalline (CLC) materials have been well studied and reported. CLC materials have the advantages of ready manipulation and multiple color transitions. For the further development of smart clothing and wearable electronics, however, the incorporation of CLC materials into polymers still remains challenging. The difficulties lie in the prevention of leakage of CLC and retention of the cholesteric liquid crystalline phase. In this work, we demonstrate a versatile nonsolvent and phase separation method using polar solvents to incorporate CLC microspheres into polymer matrix. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), a water-soluble polymer, is chosen as the polymer because of its high transparency and ease to handle. Using spin-coating and wet spinning techniques, PVA/CLC films and fibers can be fabricated. The formation of CLC microspheres in the polymer matrix is characterized through optical and polarized microscopy. Compared with the CLC films, the PVA/CLC composites demonstrate superior thermal stability. Moreover, both PVA/CLC films and fibers exhibit good color stability from the electrical tests. This work provides an effective strategy to prepare polymer/CLC composites, paving a wide avenue toward applications in smart textiles, display technologies, and medical devices.

With the continuous development of wearable electronics, higher requirements are put forward for flexible, detachable, stable output, and long service life power modules. Given the limited capacity of energy storage devices, the integration of energy capture and storage is a viable approach. Here, we present a flexible, wearable, wireless-charging power system that integrates a piezoelectric ultrasonic array harvester (PUAH) with MXene-based solid-state supercapacitors (MSSSs) in a soft wristband format for sustainable applications. The MSSS as the energy storage module is developed by using TiCT nanosheet-loaded inserted finger-like carbon cloth skeletons as electrodes and poly(vinyl alcohol)/HPO gel as electrolytes, with high energy density (58.74 Wh kg) and long cycle life (99.37%, 10,000 cycles). A two-dimensional stretchable piezoelectric array as a wireless-charging module hybridizes high-performance 1-3 composite units with serpentine electrodes, which allows wireless power via ultrasonic waves, with a maximum power density of 1.56 W cm and an output voltage of 20.75 V. The overall PUAH-MSSS wireless energy supply system is 2 mm thick and offers excellent energy conversion/storage performance, cyclic stability, and mechanical flexibility. The results of this project will lay the foundation for the development of next-generation wearable electronics.

Postoperative abdominal adhesion (PAA) widely occurs after abdominal surgery, which often produces severe complications. However, there were still no satisfactory anti-adhesive products including barriers and anti-adhesive agents. Herein, we developed a ROS-responsive and scavenging hydrogel barrier, termed AHBC/PSC, wherein the monomer AHBC was synthesized by phenylboronic acid (PBA)-modified hyaluronic acid (HA-PBA) further grafted with adipic dihydrazide (ADH) and PBA-based chlorogenic acid (CGA) via ROS-sensitive borate ester bond, and the other monomer PSC was constructed by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) grafted with sulfated betaine (SB) and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (-CHO). Further, the double crosslinked AHBC/PSC hydrogel was successfully fabricated between AHBC and PSC via forming dynamic covalent acylhydrazone bonds and borate ester bonds. Results showed that AHBC/PSC hydrogel had in situ gelation behavior, satisfactory mechanical properties (storage modulus of about 1 kPa and loss factor Tan δ of about 0.5), suitable wet tissue adhesion strength of about 2.3 kPa on rat abdominal wall, and good biocompatibility, achieving an ideal physical barrier. Particularly, CGA could be responsively released from the hydrogel by breakage of borate ester bonds between CGA and PBA based on high reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels of damaged tissue and exhibited great ROS scavenging capability to regulate inflammation and promote the polarization of macrophages from pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype to anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype. Moreover, the grafted SB as a zwitterionic group could reduce protein adsorption and fibroblast adhesion. Finally, the in vivo experiments revealed that AHBC/PSC hydrogel with good safety and in vivo retention behavior of about 2 weeks, effectively prevented PAA by regulating the inflammatory microenvironment and alleviating the fibrosis process. In brief, the versatile AHBC/PSC hydrogel would provide a more convenient and efficient approach for PAA prevention. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Postoperative abdominal adhesion (PAA) widely occurs after surgery and is often accompanied by severe complications. Excessive inflammation and oxidative stress are very crucial for PAA formation. This study provides a ROS-responsive and scavenging hydrogel with suitable mechanical properties, good biocompatibility and biodegradability, and resistance to protein and fibroblast. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory active ingredient could be responsively released from the hydrogel via triggering by the high ROS levels in the postoperative microenvironment thereby regulating the inflammatory balance. Finally, the hydrogel would effectively regulate the development process of PAA thereby achieving non-adhesion wound healing.

The novel multifunctional active packaging composite film with antimicrobial, antioxidant, water-vapor and UV-barrier, and corrosion resistance properties was successfully prepared from waste biomass. In this study, waste poplar sawdust was pretreated using green liquor to extract black liquor (BL). BL was then mixed with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution for synthesizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). PVA-BL-AgNPs film was fabricated by solution casting method, and the microstructure characterization and macroscopic performance testing of the composite film were conducted. The results revealed that PVA-BL-AgNPs film exhibited inhibitory effects against Staphylococcus aureus (inhibition zone: 33.6 mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (inhibition zone: 31.6 mm), and Escherichia coli (inhibition zone: 32.0 mm). It could eliminate over 99 % of 2,2-diazodi (3-ethyl-benzothiazol-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) free radicals and provided 100 % UV-blocking, reducing light-induced food damage. It exhibited the improvement of water-vapor barrier properties and corrosion resistance. In vitro cytotoxicity assays demonstrated that no significant impact occurred on cell proliferation, confirming the safety of the film. Packaging experiments showed that PVA-BL-AgNPs film effectively inhibited milk spoilage and prolonged the shelf-life of bread and bananas. Therefore, PVA-BL-AgNPs film might extend the shelf-life of food and offer significant opportunities in addressing the issues of low safety and environmental pollution associated with traditional packaging films.

Conductive hydrogels (CHs) with high sensitivity and multifunctional property are considered as excellent materials for wearable devices and flexible electronics. Surface synapses and internal multilayered structures are key factors for highly sensitive pressure sensors. Nevertheless, current CHs lack environmental adaptability, multifunctional perception, and instrument portability, which seriously hinders their application as sensors. Here, waste collagen fibers (buffing dust of leather), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and gelatin (Gel) were used as the basic framework of the hydrogel, loaded with a conductive material (silver nanoparticles (BD-CQDs@AgNPs)) and an anti-freezing moisturizer (glycerol (Gly)), resulting in a multifunctional conductive organohydrogel (BPGC-Gly). As a temperature and humidity sensor, it demonstrated an excellent temperature response range (-20-60 °C) and was capable of rapid response (2.4 s) and recovery (1.6 s) to human breathing. As a strain/pressure sensor, it allowed real-time monitoring of human movement and had a high low-pressure sensitivity ( = 4.26 kPa, 0-12.5 kPa). Interestingly, BPGC-Gly could also be used as a portable bioelectrode or the acquisition, monitoring and analysis of EMG/ECG signals. In this work, BPGC-Gly was assembled with wireless transmission to achieve multimodal heath detection, which opens new avenues for multi-responsive CHs, comprehensive human health monitoring and next-generation wearable electronic skin (e-skin).

Supramolecular biomaterials can recapitulate the structural and functional facets of the native extracellular matrix and react to biochemical cues, leveraging the unique attributes of noncovalent interactions, including reversibility and tunability. However, the low mechanical properties of supramolecular biomaterials can restrict their utilization in specific applications. Combining the advantages of supramolecular polymers with covalent polymers can lead to the fabrication of tailor-made biomaterials with enhanced mechanical properties/degradability. Herein, we demonstrate a synergistic coassembled self-healing gel as a multifunctional supramolecular material. As the supramolecular polymer component, we chose folic acid (vitamin B), an important biomolecule that forms a gel comprising one-dimensional (1D) supramolecular polymers. Integrating polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) into this supramolecular gel alters its ultrastructure and augments its mechanical properties. A drastic improvement of complex modulus (G*) (∼3674 times) was observed in the folic acid-PVA gel with 15% / PVA (33215 Pa) compared with the folic acid gel (9.04 Pa). The coassembled hydrogels possessed self-healing and injectable/thixotropic attributes and could be printed into specific three-dimensional (3D) shapes. Synergistically, the supramolecular polymers of folic acid also improve the toughness, durability, and ductility of the PVA films. A nanocomposite of the gels with silver nanoparticles exhibited excellent catalytic efficiency and antibacterial activity. The folic acid-PVA coassembled gels and films also possessed high cytocompatibility, substantiated by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and live-dead assays. Taken together, the antibacterial and cell-adhesive attributes suggest potential applications of these coassembled biomaterials for tissue engineering and wound healing.

In this work, a SiO doped polyvinyl alcohol/polyethylene glycol (PVA/PEG) gel polymer electrolyte (PVA/PEG-SiO) was constructed an ice-crystal template for zinc-ion batteries. The SiO and the three-dimensional porous skeleton make it have excellent ionic conductivity and mechanical strength, and inhibit the growth of dendrites. The assembled ZIBs exhibit excellent rate performance and cycle stability, making it a promising electrolyte membrane candidate for flexible wearable electronics.

This study focuses on the investigation of the significance of polymers in drug delivery approaches. The carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and dextrin-based hydrogel membrane were prepared and employed for the sustained release of third-generation oral antibiotic (cefixime). Different proportions of CMC, PVA and dextrin were blended and hydrogel membranes were fabricated via solvent casting method. The prepared membrane was characterized by FTIR, SEM, UV-visible, TGA and swelling analysis. Cefixime drug was incorporated in the CMC/PVA/dextrin matrix and drug release was investigated. The sustained release of the tested drug (cefixime) was investigated and the drug was released in 120 min in the phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution. The antibacterial activity of the prepared membrane was promising against , and strains. The swelling capabilities, thermal stability and non-toxic nature of the prepared CMC/PVA/dextrin membrane could have potential applications for cefixime drug in delivery in a controlled way for the treatment of infectious diseases.

Phthalates are extensively employed plasticizers crucial for conferring flexibility and plasticity to polyvinyl chloride. Phthalates, including DEHP (di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate), present in diverse products, have been identified in fine dust and are capable of infiltrating the body, potentially posing health hazards. Importantly, melanocytes, existing at the basal layer of the epidermis, are susceptible to toxic substances. In our study, we employed the 3D human pigmented epidermis model, MelanoDerm™, along with the B16F10 murine melanoma cell line, to examine the influence of DEHP exposure on melanocytes. The exposure to low concentrations of DEHP (~ 5 μM), resulted in the extension of melanocyte dendrites, indicating the stimulation of melanocytes. Analysis of gene expression and protein profiles unveiled the up-regulation of MITF, Arpc2, and TRP1 genes subsequent to DEHP exposure, indicating alterations in cytoskeletal and melanosome-related genetic and protein components in melanocytes. Notably, increased pigmentation was observed in MelanoDerm™ following DEHP exposure. DEHP-stimulated reactive oxygen species generation appeared to be involved in these events since the antioxidant, ascorbic acid attenuated ROS generation and MITF upregulation. Collectively, our study demonstrated that DEHP exposure can induce cytoskeletal disturbance and skin pigmentation through oxidative stress.
