Sulfonamides can be effectively removed from wastewater through a photocatalytic process. However, the mineralization achieved by this method is a long-term and expensive process. The effect of shortening the photocatalytic process is the partial degradation and formation of intermediates. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity and transformation of photocatalytic reaction intermediates in aerobic biological processes. Sulfadiazine and sulfamethoxazole solutions were used in the study, which were irradiated in the presence of a TiO-P25 catalyst. The resulting solutions were then aerated after the addition of river water or activated sludge suspension from a commercial wastewater treatment plant. The reaction kinetics were determined and fifteen products of photocatalytic degradation of sulfonamides were identified. Most of these products were further transformed in the presence of activated sludge suspension or in water taken from the river. They may have been decomposed into other organic and inorganic compounds. The formation of biologically inactive acyl derivatives was observed in the biological process. However, compounds that are more toxic to aquatic organisms than the initial drugs can also be formed. After 28 days, the sulfamethoxazole concentration in the presence of activated sludge was reduced by 66 ± 7%. Sulfadiazine was practically non-biodegradable under the conditions used. The presented results confirm the advisability of using photocatalysis as a process preceding biodegradation.

Although the incidence of infections in orthopedic surgeries, including periprosthetic surgeries, remains low at approximately 1-2%, the number of surgeries and the incidence of drug-resistant bacteria is increasing. The cost and morbidity associated with revision surgeries are huge. More effective drug combinations and delivery methods are urgently needed. In this paper, three anti-infective drugs (vancomycin, rifampicin, and silver sulfadiazine) have been jointly and effectively electrospun in thin (0.1 mm) flexible nanofiber mats of either poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) or poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA). The inclusion of poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) enabled optimal drug release with a reduced water contact angle for wetting. The controlled release of these three agents from 20% PEG (/ to polymer)-blended PMMA or PLGA nanofiber mats may allow for the prophylactical prevention of implant-related infections or provide methods to treat orthopedic infections at the time of revision surgeries. These combinations of drugs provide excellent additive or synergistic antibiotic action against a broader spectrum of bacteria than each drug alone.

is the etiologic agent of toxoplasmosis, a highly prevalent parasitosis. () transits in the brain from acute (AT) to chronic toxoplasmosis (CT), under host immune control. In immunocompromised patients, reactivation of CT is potentially life-threatening. Behavioral and neurological complications have been associated with CT. Furthermore, an effective treatment targeting CT is still lacking. We previously reported the efficacy of imiquimod against CT. Here, we demonstrate the molecular effects of imiquimod or imiquimod followed by the clinically used combination of sulfadiazine and pyrimethamine (SDZ + PYR) on CT-associated behavior in a rat model. Imiquimod decreased the number of cysts in the brains of chronically infected rats due to an induced reactivation of bradyzoites into tachyzoites. Importantly, this decrease was more pronounced in rats treated with imiquimod followed by SDZ + PYR. Rats chronically infected with exhibited an anxiety-like behavior. Notably, treatment with imiquimod reversed this behavior aberrancy, with even a more pronounced effect with imiquimod followed by SDZ/PYR. Similarly, rats chronically infected with exhibited learning deficits, and imiquimod alone or followed by SDZ/PYR reversed this behavior. Our results enhance our knowledge of the implications of CT on behavioral aberrancies and highlight the potency of imiquimod followed by SDZ + PYR on these CT-associated complications.

Based on multiple ligands strategy, a series of multivariate metal organic frameworks (MTV-MOFs) named as PCN-224-DCDPS were prepared using one-pot solvothermal method to extract and remove sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs). The pore structure and adsorption performance can be further regulated by modulating the doping ratios of medium-tetra(4-carboxylphenyl) porphyrin and 4,4'-dicarboxydiphenyl sulfones. The MTV-MOFs of PCN-224-DCDPS possesses very large specific surface area (1625 m/g). Using PCN-224-DCDPS as sorbent, a dispersive solid-phase extraction method was developed to extract and preconcentrate SAs from water, eggs, and milk prior to high performance liquid chromatography analysis. The limits of detection of method were determined between 0.17 and 0.27 ng/mL with enrichment factors ranging 214-327. The adsorption can be finished within 30 s, and the recovery rate remains above 80 % after 10 repeated uses. The adsorption capacities of sorbent were determined from 300 to 621 mg/g for sulfadiazine, sulphapyridine, sulfamethoxydiazine, sulfachlorpyridazine, sulfabenzamide, and sulfadimethoxine. The adsorption mechanisms were investigated and can be attributed to π-π interactions, hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic interactions. This work represents a method for preparation of MTV-MOFs and uses as sorbent for extraction and enrichment of trace pollutants from complex samples.

INTRODUCTION
This study investigates the potential effects of cannabis seed oil (CSO) on the wound healing process. The aim was to assess the efficacy of CSO in treating skin wounds using an animal model and to explore its anti-inflammatory properties through in silico analysis.
METHODS
Eighteen male albino Wistar rats, weighing between 200 and 250 g, were divided into three groups: an untreated negative control group, a group treated with the reference drug silver sulfadiazine (SSD) (0.01 g/mL), and a group treated topically with CSO (0.962 g/mL). The initial wound diameter for all groups was 1 cm. In silico studies were conducted using Maestro 11.5 to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of phytoconstituents against cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2).
RESULTS
CSO and SSD treatments led to a significant reduction (p <0.05) in the size of burned skin wounds by day 5, with contraction rates of 53.95% and 45.94%, respectively, compared to the untreated negative control group. By day 15, wounds treated with CSO and SSD had nearly healed, showing contraction rates of 98.8% and 98.15%, respectively. By day 20, the wounds treated with CSO had fully healed (100%), while those treated with SSD had almost completely healed, with a contraction rate of 98.97%. Histological examination revealed granulated tissue, neo-blood vessels, fibroblasts, and collagen fibers in wounds treated with CSO. In silico studies identified arachidic acid, γ-linolenic acid, and linolenic acid as potent inhibitors of COX-1 and COX-2. Serum biochemical parameters indicated no significant changes (p > 0.05) in liver and kidney function in rats treated with CSO, whereas a significant increase (p < 0.01) in ALAT level was observed in rats treated with SSD.
DISCUSSION
The findings demonstrate that CSO has a promising effect on wound healing. The CSO treatment resulted in significant wound contraction and histological improvements, with no adverse effects on liver and kidney function. However, the study's limitations, including the small sample size and the need for detailed elucidation of CSO's mechanism of action, suggest that further research is necessary. Future studies should focus on exploring the molecular pathways and signaling processes involved in CSO's pharmacological effects.

The propagation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) induced by the release of antibiotics poses great threats to ecological safety and human health. In this study, periodate (PI)/FeS/simulated sunlight (SSL) system was employed to remove representative ARB, ARGs and antibiotics in water. 1 × 10 CFU mL of gentamycin-resistant Escherichia coli was effectively disinfected below limit of detection in PI/FeS/SSL system under different water matrix and in real water samples. Sulfadiazine-resistant Pseudomonas and Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis could also be efficiently sterilized. Theoretical calculation showed that (110) facet was the most reactive facet on FeS to activate PI for the generation of reactive species (·OH, ·O, h and Fe(IV)=O) to damage cell membrane and intracellular enzyme defense system. Both intracellular and extracellular ARGs could be degraded and the expression levels of multidrug resistance-related genes were downregulated during the disinfection process. Thus, horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of ARB was inhibited. Moreover, PI/FeS/SSL system could disinfect ARB in a continuous flow reactor and in an enlarged reactor under natural sunlight irradiation. PI/FeS/SSL system could also effectively degrade the HGT-promoting antibiotic (ciprofloxacin) via hydroxylation and ring cleavage process. Overall, PI/FeS/SSL exhibited great promise for the elimination of antibiotic resistance from water.

Comparative Study
The indications for collagenase ointment (CO) and its efficacy are not clearly established in the treatment of second-degree burn wounds. To evaluate the efficacy of CO versus silver sulfadiazine ointment (SSD) in the treatment of second-degree burn wounds. A total of 170 eligible patients with deep second-degree burns, aged 18-65 years, with injuries occurring within 48-96 h, and having a total wound area of less than 30% of the total body surface area were included from 5 centers in China. The primary outcome was the wound healing time, and the secondary outcomes were the clearance time of wound necrotic tissues, wound healing rate, and wound inflammation. The study included 85 patients in SSD group and 84 in CO group in the modified intention-to-treat (mITT) population. The median time of wound healing was comparable in both groups (10 days vs. 10.5 days P = 0.16). The time for wound necrotic tissue removal was significantly shortened by CO compared with SSD (5 vs. 10 days P < 0.01). Wound inflammation, pain, wound healing rate, and scar were compared with SSD (all P-values > 0.05). No adverse events, such as infection or allergic reactions to the drugs and materials used, were reported. Both CO and SSD could heal the burn wounds at 10 days of treatment. However, CO significantly shortened the time of wound necrotic tissue removal by 5 days. Trial Registration: ChiCTR2100046971.

Given the increasing pressure on water bodies, it is imperative to explore sustainable methodologies for wastewater treatment and reuse. The simultaneous presence of multiples contaminants in complex wastewater, such as the liquid effluents from biogas plants, can compromise biological treatment effectiveness for reclaiming water. Vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands were established as low-cost decentralized wastewater treatment technologies to treat the liquid fraction of digestate from municipal organic waste with metals, antibiotics, and antibiotic resistance genes, to allow its reuse in irrigation. Twelve lab-scale planted constructed wetlands were assembled with gravel, light expanded clay aggregate and sand, testing four different treating conditions (liquid digestate spiked with oxytetracycline, sulfadiazine, or ofloxacin, at 100 μg/ L, or without dosing) during 3 months. Physicochemical parameters (pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), nutrients, metals, and antibiotics), the microbial communities dynamics (through 16S high-throughput sequencing) and antibiotic resistance genes removal (qPCR) were monitored in influents and effluents. Systems removed 85.8%-96.9% of organic matter (as COD), over 98.1% of ammonium and phosphate ions, and 69.3%-99.4% of nitrate and nitrite ions, with no significant differences between the presence or absence of antibiotics. Removal of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb and Cr exceeded 82% in all treatment cycles. The treatment also removed oxytetracycline, sulfadiazine and ofloxacin over 99%, and decreased , and gene copies. Nonetheless, after 3 months of ofloxacin dosing, gene started being detected. Removal processes relied on high HRT (14 days) and various mechanisms including sorption, biodegradation, and precipitation. Microbial community diversity in liquid digestate changed significantly after treatment in constructed wetlands with a decrease in the initial Firmicutes dominance, but with no clear effect of antibiotics on the microbial community structure. Removals above 85% and 94% were observed for and respectively. Results suggest that vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands were a suitable technology for treating the liquid digestate to reuse it in irrigation agricultural systems, contributing to the circular bioeconomy concept. However, a more profound understanding of effective wastewater treatment strategies is needed to avoid antibiotic resistance genes dissemination.

MATERIALS AND METHODS
In a research experiment, 48 male Wistar rats were anesthetized and second-degree burns were induced on their backs. The rats' wounds were then uniformly inoculated with MRSA. Various treatments were applied to the burn wounds daily, including Myrtus ointment, silver nanoparticles, silver nanoparticles-Myrtus ointment, silver sulfadiazine-Myrtus ointment, silver sulfadiazine 1%, mupirocin ointment, and a positive control. The study measured the antimicrobial effects, wound area, percentage of wound healing, antioxidant capacities, malondialdehyde, and nitric oxide concentrations in the serum of the rats. Data analysis was performed using GraphPad software, with one-way ANOVA and Tukey's tests used to determine the statistical significance of the results.
RESULTS
Rats treated with Myrtus ointment, silver nanoparticles-Myrtus ointment, and mupirocin had reduced bacterial growth compared to the positive control group, nanoparticle ointment, and silver sulfadiazine ( < 0.05). The wound area of the Myrtus ointment group decreased significantly on the seventh and fourteenth days, as well as the level of MDA and nitric oxide, compared to the other groups. In Myrtus and silver sulfadiazine-Myrtus ointment increased the thickness of the epidermis and dermis compared to the other groups.
CONCLUSION
Based on the anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound healing properties of Myrtus, with further studies, an ointment of this plant may be used as a main or complementary treatment for burn wound infections caused by MRSA.

To comprehensively assess the pollution characteristics and ecological risks of antibiotics in the rivers in Beijing, the concentrations of 35 common antibiotics belonging to four categories were quantified by using solid phase extraction combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The ecological risks of antibiotics were evaluated using the methods of risk quotient (RQ) and joint probability curves (JPCs). The results showed that a total of 33 antibiotics were detected in the surface water of ten rivers in Beijing, and the total concentrations of antibiotics ranged from N.D. to 1 573.57 ng·L. Sulfamethoxazole showed the highest concentration (N.D.-160.04 ng·L), followed by sulfadiazine (0.09-147.90 ng·L) and ofloxacin (0.28-94.72 ng·L). There were 16 antibiotics with a detection frequency greater than 50.0 %. The RQ method showed that there were 12 antibiotics with potential ecological risks. Tetracycline, clarithromycin, and trimethoprim showed the highest risks, with RQs of 3.99, 1.86, and 1.01, respectively. The risks of antibiotics at the outlets of wastewater treatment plants were higher than those in mainstream rivers. The PNEC exceedance rates of tetracycline, clarithromycin, and trimethoprim were above 2.3 %. Based on JPCs, the maximum risk product of clarithromycin was 1.66 %, and it showed low risks to 0.3 %-7.0 % of species. The risks of other antibiotics could be ignored. The detection frequency, distribution of concentrations, most sensitive species, and species sensitivity distribution of antibiotics had important impacts on the ecological risk assessment. Using the multilevel ecological risk assessment strategy can effectively avoid inadequate protection and overprotection and is also conducive to the hierarchical and zoning management of antibiotics throughout the region.
