The limited supply and rising demand for kidney transplantation has led to the use of allografts more susceptible to ischemic reperfusion injury (IRI) and oxidative stress to expand the donor pool. Organ preservation and procurement techniques, such as machine perfusion (MP) and normothermic regional perfusion (NRP), have been developed to preserve allograft function, though their long-term outcomes have been more challenging to investigate. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the benefits of MP and NRP compared to traditional preservation techniques. PubMed (MEDLINE), Embase, Cochrane, and Scopus databases were queried, and of 13,794 articles identified, 54 manuscripts were included ( = 41 MP; = 13 NRP). MP decreased the rates of 12-month graft failure (OR 0.67; 95%CI 0.55, 0.80) and other perioperative outcomes such as delayed graft function (OR 0.65; 95%CI 0.54, 0.79), primary nonfunction (OR 0.63; 95%CI 0.44, 0.90), and hospital length of stay (15.5 days vs. 18.4 days) compared to static cold storage. NRP reduced the rates of acute rejection (OR 0.48; 95%CI 0.35, 0.67) compared to in situ perfusion. Overall, MP and NRP are effective techniques to mitigate IRI and play an important role in safely expanding the donor pool to satisfy the increasing demands of kidney transplantation.

INTRODUCTION
Evaluation of post-nephrectomy social health in living kidney donors is essential. This systematic review examines their emotional need for social relatedness post-donation.
METHODS
Following the PRISMA guidelines, we systematically searched Scopus, CINAHL, and PsycINFO.
RESULTS
Among the screened records, 32 quantitative and 16 qualitative papers met the inclusion criteria. Quantitative research predominantly utilized questionnaires featuring generic items on social functioning. However, a minority delved into emotional and social dimensions, aligning with qualitative studies emphasizing the importance of social connection and perceived social support post-donation. Specifically, post-donation changes in connecting with others encompass a sense of belongingness, heightened autonomy, shifts in concern for the recipient's health, and continued care by shielding the recipient from personal health issues. Social acknowledgment and social support from both close and extended networks are reported as relevant for recovery after nephrectomy.
DISCUSSION
These findings underscore the necessity for targeted measures of emotional needs and social functioning to effectively assess post-donation adjustment. They also inform the identification of key health themes for kidney donor Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) and Patient-Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) questions.

Is the Hedgehog Pathway Involved in the Pathophysiology of Schizophrenia? A Systematic Review of Current Evidence of Neural Molecular Correlates and Perspectives on Drug Development.
Among the pathophysiological correlates of schizophrenia, recent research suggests a potential role for the Hedgehog (Hh) signalling pathway, which has been traditionally studied in embryonic development and oncology. Its dysregulation may impact brain homeostasis, neuroplasticity, and potential involvement in neural processes. This systematic review provides an overview of the involvement of Hh signalling in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and antipsychotic responses. We searched the PubMed and Scopus databases to identify peer-reviewed scientific studies focusing on Hh and schizophrenia, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement, finally including eight studies, including three articles focused on patients with schizophrenia, two animal models of schizophrenia, two animal embryo studies, and one cellular differentiation study. The Hh pathway is crucial in the development of midbrain dopaminergic neurons, neuroplasticity mechanisms, regulating astrocyte phenotype and function, brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression, brain glutamatergic neural transmission, and responses to antipsychotics. Overall, results indicate an involvement of Hh in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and antipsychotic responses, although an exiguity of studies characterises the literature. The heterogeneity between animal and human studies is another main limitation. Further research can lead to better comprehension and the development of novel personalised drug treatments and therapeutic interventions.

BACKGROUND
Female athletes are at increased risk for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. The influence of hormonal variation on female ACL injury risk remains ill-defined. Recent data suggests that the collagen-degrading menstrual hormone relaxin may cyclically impact female ACL tissue quality. This review aims to identify any correlation between menstrual relaxin peaks and rates of female ACL injury.
METHODS
A systematic review was performed, utilizing the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CINAHL databases. Included studies had to directly address relaxin/female ACL interactions. The primary outcome variable was relaxin proteolysis of the ACL, at cellular, tissue, joint, and whole-organism levels. The secondary outcome variable was any discussed method of moderating relaxin levels, and the clinical results if available.
RESULTS
AllThe numerous relaxin receptors on female ACLs upregulate local collagenolysis and suppress local collagen production. Peak serum relaxin concentrations (SRC) occur during menstrual cycle days 21-24; a time phase associated with greater risk of ACL injury. Oral contraceptives (OCPs) reduce SRC, with a potential ACLprotective effect.
CONCLUSION
A reasonable correlative and plausible causative relationship exists between peak relaxin levels and increased risk of ACL injury in females, and further investigation is warranted. .

BACKGROUND
The prevalence of pelvic organ prolapse is varied in different countries. For validating the results of numerous studies on the prevalence of Pelvic organ prolapse in the world, a meta-analysis study seems necessary to provide an accurate and valid prevalence for planners and researchers in this field. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the worldwide prevalence of pelvic organ prolapse using the meta-analysis method.
METHODS
By using valid keywords, searching was done in ISI Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Medline databases, and 22 articles were selected based on inclusion criteria between 2009 and 2021. The quality of articles was checked using The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklist. Meta-analysis was performed on collected data using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis Software (CMA, Version 2). Meta-analysis of data was done with a random-effects model. The heterogeneity of the study was checked using the I2 index. Publication bias was assessed by the Egger test and funnel graph.
RESULTS
The overall prevalence of included studies was 30.9% (95% confidence interval: 24.4-38.2%), (<0.001, heterogeneity I2=99.8%). Meta-analysis of subgroups in studies that used a questionnaire to estimate the prevalence rate showed the prevalence was 25.0% and, in the studies, used the physical examination was 41.8%.
CONCLUSION
Studies carried out in different parts of the world have examined the prevalence of pelvic organ prolapse using different tools. Since some cases are asymptomatic, especially in the low stage of prolapse, physical examination of pelvic organ prolapse should be considered an essential tool in evaluating pelvic organ prolapse.

Food allergy can range from mild to severe, life-threatening reactions with various symptoms and organ involvement. The impact of asthma on severe food-induced allergic reactions is not completely understood. In the hypothesis that asthma increases the risk of severe food-induced allergic reactions, the aim of this study is to compare the incidence of severe food-induced allergic reactions in patients with history of asthma compared with patients without history of asthma. We performed a systematic research on electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Observational studies, studies reporting medical characteristics of patients diagnosed with food allergy, and studies reporting medical history of patients with allergic reactions were included. The primary outcome was the incidence of severe food-induced allergic reactions in patients with history of asthma compared with patients without history of asthma. The protocol of this review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023448293). Eight studies with a total of 90,367 patients met the inclusion criteria and were included, with a total population of 28,166 of patients with food allergy. The incidence of severe food-induced allergic reactions in patients with history of asthma compared with patients without history of asthma was increased (OR = 1.28; 95% CI 1.03-1.59; p = 0.03; I2 = 59%). Individuals with both food allergy and asthma are at high risk of severe, potentially fatal allergic reactions. Healthcare professionals should prioritize prevention and management strategies for these subjects.

BACKGROUND
The oncological outcomes of fertility-sparing surgery (FSS) compared to radical surgery (RS) in patients with stage I epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) remain a subject of debate. We evaluated the risk ratios (RRs) for outcomes in patients with stage I EOC who underwent FSS versus RS.
METHODS
We conducted a systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase for articles published up to November 29, 2023. Studies that did not involve surgical procedures or included pregnant patients were excluded. We calculated the RRs for disease-free survival, overall survival, and recurrence rate. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias in Nonrandomized Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-I) tool. The meta-analysis was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42024546460).
RESULTS
From the 5,529 potentially relevant articles, we identified 83 articles for initial screening and included 12 articles in the final meta-analysis, encompassing 2,906 patients with epithelial ovarian cancer. There were no significant differences between the two groups in disease-free survival (RR [95% confidence interval {CI}], 0.90 [0.51, 1.58]; P = 0.71), overall survival (RR [95% CI], 0.74 [0.53, 1.03]; P = 0.07), and recurrence rate (RR [95% CI], 1.10 [0.69, 1.76]; P = 0.68). In sensitivity analyses, the significant difference was observed only for overall survival (before exclusion: RR [95% CI], 0.74 [0.53-1.03], P = 0.07; after exclusion: RR [95% CI], 0.70 [0.50-0.99]; P = 0.04).
CONCLUSIONS
This is the first and only individual patient data meta-analysis comparing disease-free survival, overall survival, and recurrence rate of patients with early-stage epithelial ovarian cancer undergoing FSS and RS. FSS was associated with similar disease-free survival and risk of recurrence as RS. We hypothesized that the decreased overall survival in the FSS group could not be attributed to distant metastases from epithelial ovarian cancer.

BACKGROUND
Previous studies have yielded varying conclusions regarding the impact of single-patient room design on nosocomial infection in the intensive care unit (ICU). We aimed to examine the impact of ICU single-patient room design on infection control.
METHODS
We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CNKI, WanFang Data, and CBM databases from inception to October 2023, without language restrictions. We included observational cohort and quasi-experimental studies assessing the effect of single- versus multi-patient rooms on infection control in the ICU. Outcomes measured included the nosocomial infection rate, incidence density of nosocomial infection, nosocomial colonization and infection rate, acquisition rate of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs), and nosocomial bacteremia rate. The choice of effect model was determined by heterogeneity.
RESULTS
Our final analysis incorporated 12 studies involving 12,719 patients. Compared with multi-patient rooms in the ICU, single-patient rooms demonstrated a significant benefit in reducing the nosocomial infection rate (odds ratio [OR]: 0.68; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.59, 0.79; < 0.00001). Analysis based on nosocomial infection incidence density revealed a statistically significant reduction in single-patient rooms (OR: 0.64; 95% CI: 0.44, 0.92; = 0.02). Single-patient rooms were associated with a marked decrease in nosocomial colonization and infection rate (OR: 0.44; 95% CI: 0.32, 0.62; < 0.00001). Furthermore, patients in single-patient rooms experienced lower nosocomial bacteremia rate (OR: 0.73; 95% CI: 0.59, 0.89; = 0.002) and lower acquisition rate of MDROs (OR: 0.41; 95% CI: 0.23, 0.73; = 0.002) than those in multi-patient rooms.
CONCLUSION
Implementation of single-patient rooms represents an effective strategy for reducing nosocomial infections in the ICU.

OBJECTIVE
This study, examining literature up to December 2023, aims to comprehensively assess surgical care for incarcerated individuals, identifying crucial knowledge gaps for informing future health services research and interventions.
BACKGROUND
The US prison system detains around 2 million individuals, mainly young, indigent males from ethnic and racial minorities. The constitutional right to healthcare does not protect this population from unique health challenges and disparities. The scarcity of literature on surgical care necessitates a systematic review to stimulate research, improve care quality, and address health issues within this marginalized community.
METHODS
A systematic review, pre-registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42023454782), involved searches in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science. Original research on surgical care for incarcerated individuals was included, excluding case reports/series (<10 patients), abstracts, and studies involving prisoners of war, plastic surgeries for recidivism reduction, transplants using organs from incarcerated individuals, and nonconsensual surgical sterilization.
RESULTS
Out of 8209 studies screened, 118 met inclusion criteria, with 17 studies from 16 distinct cohorts reporting on surgical care. Predominantly focusing on orthopedic surgeries, supplemented by studies in emergency general, burns, ophthalmology, and kidney transplantation, the review identified delayed hospital presentations, a high incidence of complex cases, and low postoperative follow-up rates. Notable complications, such as nonfusion and postarthroplasty infections, were more prevalent in incarcerated individuals compared with nonincarcerated individuals. Trauma-related mortality rates were similar, despite lower intraabdominal injuries following penetrating abdominal injuries in incarcerated patients.
CONCLUSION
While some evidence suggests inferior surgical care in incarcerated patients, the limited quality of available studies underscores the urgency of addressing knowledge gaps through future research. This is crucial for patients, clinicians, and policymakers aiming to enhance care quality for a population at risk of surgical complications during incarceration and postrelease.

Due to their ability to replicate the in vivo microenvironment through cell interaction and induce cells to stimulate cell function, three-dimensional cell culture models can overcome the limitations of two-dimensional models. Organoids are 3D models that demonstrate the ability to replicate the natural structure of an organ. In most organoid tissue cultures, matrigel made of a mouse tumor extracellular matrix protein mixture is an essential ingredient. However, its tumor-derived origin, batch-to-batch variation, high cost, and safety concerns have limited the usefulness of organoid drug development and regenerative medicine. Its clinical application has also been hindered by the fact that organoid generation is dependent on the use of poorly defined matrices. Therefore, matrix optimization is a crucial step in developing organoid culture that introduces alternatives as different materials. Recently, a variety of substitute materials has reportedly replaced matrigel. The purpose of this study is to review the significance of the latest advances in materials for cell culture applications and how they enhance build network systems by generating proper cell behavior. Excellence in cell behavior is evaluated from their cell characteristics, cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and even gene expression. As a result, graphene oxide as a matrix optimization demonstrated high potency in developing organoid models. Graphene oxide can promote good cell behavior and is well known for having good biocompatibility. Hence, advances in matrix optimization of graphene oxide provide opportunities for the future development of advanced organoid models.
