This study aimed to explore the impact of dietary Bacillus subtilis fmbj (BS) supplementation on acute intestinal dysfunction induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in broilers. One hundred and eighty 1-day-old male Arbor Acres broilers were randomly divided into three treatment groups, each comprising ten replicates of 6 birds. On d 20, LPS-challenged (LPS group and LPS-BS group) and LPS-unchallenged (CON group) broilers received intraperitoneal injections of 1 mg/kg body weight LPS solution and an equivalent volume of sterile saline, respectively. Compared to the CON group, LPS disrupted (P < 0.05) the morphology of the small intestine (jejunum or ileum), exacerbated (P < 0.05) serum, small intestinal, and small intestinal mitochondrial antioxidant capacity, induced (P < 0.05) small intestinal oxidative damage, and altered (P < 0.05) the expression of genes and proteins related to antioxidants, cell adhesion, and mitochondrial function in the jejunum. The LPS-BS group exhibited a tendency towards improvement in small intestinal morphology, serum, small intestinal, and small intestinal mitochondrial antioxidant capacity, small intestinal oxidative damage, and the expression of genes and proteins related to antioxidants, cell adhesion, and mitochondrial function in the jejunum when compared to the LPS group. In conclusion, BS supplementation may confer protection against LPS-induced acute intestinal dysfunction in broilers by enhancing the activation of SIRT1/PGC1α, suggesting its potential as a valuable additive for the poultry industry.

INTRODUCTION
Identifying risk factors for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) progression is important. However, studies that have evaluated this subject using a Brazilian sample is sparce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify risk factors for renal outcomes and death in a Brazilian cohort of ADPKD patients.
METHODS
Patients had the first medical appointment between January 2002 and December 2014, and were followed up until December 2019. Associations between clinical and laboratory variables with the primary outcome (sustained decrease of at least 57% in the eGFR from baseline, need for dialysis or renal transplantation) and the secondary outcome (death from any cause) were analyzed using a multiple Cox regression model. Among 80 ADPKD patients, those under 18 years, with glomerular filtration rate <30 mL/min/1.73 m2, and/or those with missing data were excluded. There were 70 patients followed.
RESULTS
The factors independently associated with the renal outcomes were total kidney length - adjusted Hazard Ratio (HR) with a 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 1.137 (1.057-1.224), glomerular filtration rate - HR (95% CI): 0.970 (0.949-0.992), and serum uric acid level - HR (95% CI): 1.643 (1.118-2.415). Diabetes mellitus - HR (95% CI): 8.115 (1.985-33.180) and glomerular filtration rate - HR (95% CI): 0.957 (0.919-0.997) were associated with the secondary outcome.
CONCLUSIONS
These findings corroborate the hypothesis that total kidney length, glomerular filtration rate and serum uric acid level may be important prognostic predictors of ADPKD in a Brazilian cohort, which could help to select patients who require closer follow up.

Iodine deficiency in the diet globally continues to be a cause of many diseases and disabilities. Kale is a vegetable that has health-promoting potential because of many nutrients and bioactive compounds (ascorbic acid, carotenoids, glucosinolates and phenolic compounds). Brassica vegetables, including kale, have been strongly recommended as dietary adjuvants for improving health. The nutrient and health-promoting compounds in kale are significantly affected by thermal treatments. Changes in phytochemicals upon such activities may result from two contrary phenomena: breakdown of nutrients and bioactive compounds and a matrix softening effect, which increases the extractability of phytochemicals, which may be especially significant in the case of iodine-fortified kale. This study investigated changes of basic composition, iodine, vitamin C, total carotenoids and polyphenols contents as well as antioxidant activity caused by steaming, blanching and boiling processes in the levels of two cultivars of kale (green and red) non-biofortified and biofortified via the application to nutrient solutions in hydroponic of two iodoquinolines [8-hydroxy-7-iodo-5-quinolinesulfonic acid (8-OH-7-I-5QSA) and 5-chloro-7-iodo-8-quinoline (5-Cl-7-I-8-Q)] and KIO3. Thermal processes generally significantly reduced the content of the components in question and the antioxidant activity of kale, regardless of cultivar and enrichment. It was observed that the red cultivar of kale had a greater ability to accumulate and reduce iodine losses during the culinary processes. 8-hydroxy-7-iodo-5-quinolinesulfonic acid showed a protective effect against the treatments used, compared to other enrichments, thus contributing to the preservation of high iodine content.

Pentoxifylline treatment as a safe method for selecting viable testicular spermatozoa before cryopreservation of a small numbers of spermatozoa in azoospermia individuals.
BACKGROUND
Single sperm cryopreservation (SSC) is a specific technique especially used in individuals with small numbers of sperm who suffered from non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA). Testicular specimens possess poor motility and low population of viable spermatozoa. Therefore, sperm selection methods such as applying pentoxifylline (PTX) may improve motility in these cases. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effects of PTX on testicular spermatozoa before and after performing SSC.
METHODS
Thirty testicular samples were obtained from men with azoospermia. This study was conducted in two phases. Phase 1 evaluated the effect of PTX for sperm selection before SSC. Twenty testicular samples were divided to two experimental groups: SSC without (I) and with PTX treatment (II). For PTX treatment spermatozoa were incubated with PTX at 37°C for 30 min and only motile spermatozoa were selected for SSC. In phase 2, ten testicular samples were cryopreserved with SSC and warming procedure was carried out in droplet with and without PTX. Motility and viability rates, morphology by motile sperm organelle morphology examination (MSOME), DNA fragmentation by sperm chromatin dispersion test (SCD) and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) were evaluated.
RESULTS
In phase 1, post warm motility rate was higher in PTX exposed group compared to the unexposed group (25.6 ± 8.13 vs. 0.85 ± 2.1) (p > 0.00). Recovery rate, viability and morphology were not significantly different between groups. DNA integrity and MMP were also similar between both groups. In phase 2 although motility increased in PTX group compared to without PTX group (29.30 ± 12.73 vs. 1.90 ± 2.64) (p > 0.00), the viability rate was not different (70.40 ± 12.12 vs. 65.30 ± 11.87). All above mentioned parameters were similar between the two SSC groups.
CONCLUSIONS
Supplementation of testicular spermatozoa with PTX before cryopreservation increases motility and did not have adverse effects on viability, morphology, DNA integrity and MMP. PTX could be used as sperm selection method before single sperm cryopreservation, but PTX could not maintain motile the most of viable testicular sperms.

(PC) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and food as well as an important essential oil plant in China. PC essential oil exerts pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-platelet, anti-thrombotic, and anti-depressant. This study established a reliable and sensitive gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method for the simultaneous determination of the pharmacokinetics of patchouli alcohol, β-elemene, β-caryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide, and farnesol in the plasma of rats after oral administration of PC essential oil extract. Using ethyl acetate to prepare the plasma samples, and p-menthone was used as the internal standard (IS). An HP5-MS column (0.25 μm × 0.25 mm × 30 m) was used for chromatographic separation, and detection was performed in selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode. The accuracies of intra-day and inter-day for all analytes displayed a range of -6.7 %-9.2 %, with precision below 12.5 %. Extraction recoveries for analytes ranged from 74.0 to 106.4 % and matrix effects ranged from 92.4 to 106.9 %. Stability results have demonstrated that the relative standard deviations (RSD) of analytes were below 12.1 %. Therefore, the developed GC-MS method successfully evaluated the pharmacokinetics of five volatile components in PC essential oil extract administered orally to rats.

The study aimed to examine the impact of increasing environmental temperatures on physiological changes, oxidative stress, nitric oxide production, total antioxidant capacity, and blood cell viability in American bullfrog crossbreeds. Frogs and frog blood cells were exposed to temperature ranges of 25-33 °C and 25-37 °C, respectively. Physiological parameters (body temperature, pulse rate, ventilation rate, and oxygen saturation) and biochemical parameters (total antioxidant power, hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, nitric oxide, and mitochondrial activity) were measured at every 2 °C increment. Results showed that body temperature rose with increased environmental temperature ( < 0.05). Pulse rates at 33 °C were higher than those at 25-31 °C ( < 0.05). Ventilation rates at 31 °C exceeded those at 25 °C and 27 °C ( < 0.05). Oxygen saturation levels remained stable at 25-33 °C ( > 0.05). Total antioxidant power at 25 °C was greater than at 27-37 °C ( < 0.05). Hydrogen peroxide levels at 27 °C were higher compared to 25 °C and 31-37 °C ( < 0.05). Malondialdehyde levels at 25-33 °C were higher than at 35 °C and 37 °C ( < 0.05). Nitric oxide levels at 37 °C were higher than at 25-33 °C ( < 0.05), and at 35 °C were higher than at 25-31 °C (P < 0.05). Blood cell viability at 25-31 °C was higher than at 37 °C ( < 0.05). These results suggest that at an environmental temperature of 33 °C, the frogs' body temperature approached 31 °C or higher, and were likely to be harmful to the frogs. Finally, the environmental temperature that caused frog blood cell death was 37 °C.

Biopeptides from were reported with good ACE inhibitory activity, and the tripeptide SRP was one with the highest ACE inhibition rate. However, the disadvantage of short half-life limited the development of peptide drugs. Moreover, the distinct mechanism of the peptide inhibiting ACE remained unknown. Thus, in this study, a sustained release formulation of SRP-PLGA-MS was designed and prepared. Its long-lasting antihypertensive effect as well as improvement of vascular pathomorphology was verified in spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). In addition, the anti-oxidant activity of SRP in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) was evaluated. The results showed that SRP inhibited the production of ROS and NO, which involve the NADPH oxidase, and Keap1/Nrf2 signaling pathway. This study demonstrated that SRP-PLGA-MS had the potential to develop sustained-release drugs for hypertension treatment.

Resveratrol (RES) is a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound. Recent studies have identified multiple potential health benefits of RES, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, anticancer, anti-diabetic, cardiovascular, and neuroprotective properties. The objective of this review is to summarize and analyze the studies on the biological activities of RES in disease prevention and treatment, as well as its metabolism and bioavailability. It also discusses the challenges in its clinical application and future research directions. RES exhibits significant potential in the prevention and treatment of many diseases. The future direction of RES research should focus on improving its bioavailability, conducting more clinical trials to determine its effectiveness in humans, and investigating its mechanism of action. Once these challenges have been overcome, RES is expected to become an effective health intervention.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by itching, epidermal barrier dysfunction, and an unbalanced inflammatory reaction. AD pathophysiology involves a dysregulated immune response driven by T helper-2 cells. Many factors, including reactive oxygen species (ROS), are involved in AD pathogenesis by causing cellular damage and inflammation resulting in skin barrier dysfunction. This narrative review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the role of natural molecules and antioxidant compounds, highlighting their potential therapeutic value in AD prevention and management. They include vitamin D, vitamin E, pyridoxine, Vitamin C, carotenoids, and melatonin. Some studies report a statistically significant association between antioxidant levels and improvement in AD, however, there are conflicting results in which antioxidant supplementation, especially Vitamin D, did not result in improvement in AD. Therefore, the clinical efficacy of these dietary nutritional factors in the treatment of AD needs to be further evaluated in clinical trials. Meanwhile, antioxidants can be incorporated into the management of AD patients in a personalized manner, tailored to the severity of the disease, comorbidities, and individual needs.

PURPOSE
To examine the potential association between polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hyperuricemia and to elucidate the underlying contributory factors.
METHODS
Retrospective study on 603 women with PCOS and 604 women without PCOS. Anthropometric features, reproductive hormone profiles, and metabolic parameters were measured and compared between two groups of patients. Examinations of correlations between SUA levels and other parameters were conducted to discern potential correlations.
RESULTS
Both serum uric acid levels and the incidence of hyperuricemia exhibited statistically significant elevations in women with PCOS when compared to their counterparts without PCOS. Nonetheless, this statistical difference was not found between the obese subgroup after stratifying study subjects by body mass index (BMI). Pearson's correlation analysis underscored the prominence of BMI as a robust factor influencing SUA levels in women, regardless of their PCOS status. Furthermore, multivariable linear regression model demonstrated significant positive associations between SUA levels and several variables, namely dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S), free androgen index (FAI), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), free fatty acids (FFA), fasting insulin (FINS), homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), area under the curve for insulin (AUC-I), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). Additionally, it is noteworthy that the prevalence of hyperuricemia exhibited a positive association with fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels, while conversely, it displayed a negative association with estradiol (E2) levels.
CONCLUSIONS
PCOS is associated with a significant elevation of SUA level and hyperuricemia prevalence. HA, IR, and dyslipidemia may be the mediators in the pathogenesis of hyperuricemia in women with PCOS.
