ZnO nanorod nonwoven fabrics (ZNRN) were developed through hydrothermal synthesis to facilitate the prevention of the transmission of respiratory pathogens. The superhydrophobicity and antibacterial properties of ZNRN were improved through the response surface methodology. The synthesized material exhibited significant water repellency, indicated by a water contact angle of 163.9°, and thus demonstrated antibacterial rates of 91.8% for Escherichia coli () and 79.75% for Staphylococcus aureus (). This indicated that with thinner peptidoglycan may be more easily killed than . This study identified significant effects of synthesis conditions on the antibacterial effectiveness, with comprehensive multivariate analyses elucidating the underlying correlations. In addition, the ZnO nanorod structure of ZNRN was characterized through SEM and XRD analyses. It endows the properties of superhydrophobicity (thus preventing bacteria from adhering to the ZNRN surface) and antibacterial capacity (thus damaging cells through the puncturing of these nanorods). Consequently, the alignment of two such features is desired to help support the development of personal protective equipment, which assists in avoiding the spread of respiratory infections.

Organic arsenic compounds such as -aminophenylarsine oxide (-APAO) are easier for structural optimization to improve drug-like properties such as pharmacokinetic properties, therapeutic efficacy, and target selectivity. In order to strengthen the selectivity of 4-(1,3,2-dithiarsinan-2-yl) aniline 7 to tumor cell, a thiourea moiety was used to strengthen the anticancer activity. To avoid forming a mixture of α/β anomers, the strategy of 2-acetyl's neighboring group participation was used to lock the configuration of 2,3,4,6-tetra--acetyl-β-d-glucopyranosyl isothiocyanate from 2,3,4,6-tetra--acetyl-α-d-glucopyranosyl bromide. 1-(4-(1,3,2-dithiarsinan-2-yl) aniline)-2-N-(2,3,4,6-tetra--acetyl-β-d-glucopyranos-1-yl)-thiourea 2 can increase the selectivity of human colon cancer cells HCT-116 (0.82 ± 0.06 μM vs. 1.82 ± 0.07 μM) to human embryonic kidney 293T cells (1.38 ± 0.01 μM vs. 1.22 ± 0.06 μM) from 0.67 to 1.68, suggesting a feasible approach to improve the therapeutic index of arsenic-containing compounds as chemotherapeutic agents.

To investigate the effect of the chemical composition of a metal-organic crosslinker on the performances of fracturing fluid in high-temperature conditions, four zirconium (Zr) crosslinkers and one aluminum-zirconium (Al-Zr) crosslinker with a polyacrylamide were used. The crosslinkers possessed the same Zr concentration, but they differed in component amounts and the order of the addition of the crosslinker components, leading to different chemical compositions in the crosslinkers. The fracturing fluids prepared by different tested crosslinkers were compared in terms of properties of rheological behavior, sand-carrying ability, microstructure, and gel breaking characteristics. The results showed that the fracturing fluids prepared by zirconium lactic acid, ethanediamine, and sorbitol crosslinkers offered the slowest viscosity development and highest final viscosity compared to the zirconium lactic acid crosslinker and the zirconium lactic acid and ethanediamine crosslinker. The zirconium sorbitol, lactic acid, and ethanediamine crosslinker exhibited a faster crosslinking rate and a higher final viscosity than the zirconium lactic acid, ethanediamine, and sorbitol crosslinker; the crosslinker showed crosslinking density and crosslinking reactivity, resulting in more crosslinking sites and a higher strength in the fracturing fluid. The Al-Zr-based crosslinker possessed better properties in temperature and shear resistance, viscoelasticity, shear recovery, and sand-carrying ability than the Zr-based crosslinker due to the synergistic crosslinking effect of aluminum and zirconium ions. The tertiary release gelation mechanism of the Al-Zr-based fracturing fluid achieved a temperature resistance performance in the form of continuous crosslinking, avoiding the excessive crosslinking dehydration and reducing viscosity loss caused by early shear damage. These results indicated that the chemical compositions of metal-organic crosslinkers were important factors in determining the properties of fracturing fluids. Therefore, the appropriate type of crosslinker could save costs without adding the additional components required for high-temperature reservoirs.

This paper focuses on the development of electroplating on 150 mm wafer level for microsystem technology applications from 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (EMImCl) with Aluminumtrichloride (AlCl). The deposition was carried out on 150 mm wafers with Au or Al seed layers deposited by physical vapor deposition (PVD). The electrodeposition was carried out using pattern plating. On the Au seed layer, bipolar pulse plating was applied. Compared to the Au seed layer, the electrodeposition on the Al seed layer was favorable, with lower current densities and pulsing frequencies. Utilizing the recurrent galvanic pulses and avoiding ionic liquid convection, inhomogeneities lower than 15% were achieved with a laboratory plating cell. One major aspect of this study was the removal of the native Al oxide prior to deposition. It was investigated on the chip and wafer levels using either current- or potential-controlled removal pulses. This process step was affected by the plasma treatment of the wafer, thus the surface free energy, prior to plating. It turned out that a higher surface free energy hindered proper oxide removal at a potential of 3 V. The theory of oxide breakdown based on electrostriction force via the electrical field was applied to discuss the findings and to derive conclusions for future plating experiments.

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have become a research hotspot due to their high intensity and subwavelength localization. Through free-electron excitation, a portion of the momentum of moving electrons can be converted into SPPs. Converting highly localized SPPs into a radiated field is an approach with the potential to aid in the development of a light radiation source. Reducing losses of SPPs is currently a critical challenge that needs to be addressed. The lifetime of SPPs in metal films is longer than that in metal blocks. Traditional optical gratings can transform SPPs into radiation to avoid the decay of SPPs in metal; however, they are created by etching metal films, so they tend to alter the dispersion characteristics of these films and will emit radiation in the direction perpendicular to the metal surface. This paper proposes an approach to converting the SPPs of a metal film excited by free electrons into a radiation field via lateral grating and obtaining in-plane radiation. We investigate the properties of SPP lateral radiation. The study of lateral radiation from metal films holds significant importance for SPP radiation sources and SPP on-chip circuit development.

To address surface morphological defects that have a destructive effect on the epitaxial wafer from the aspect of 4H-SiC epitaxial growth, this study thoroughly examined many key factors that affect the density of defects in 4H-SiC epitaxial wafer, including the ratio of carbon to silicon, growth time, application of a buffer layer, hydrogen etching and other process parameters. Through systematic experimental verification and data analysis, it was verified that when the carbon-silicon ratio was accurately controlled at 0.72, the density of defects in the epitaxial wafer was the lowest, and its surface flatness showed the best state. In addition, it was found that the growth of the buffer layer under specific conditions could effectively reduce defects, especially surface morphology defects. This provides a new idea and method for improving the surface quality of epitaxial wafers. At the same time, we also studied the influence of hydrogen etching on the quality of epitaxial wafers. The experimental results show that proper hydrogen etching can optimize surface quality, but excessive etching may lead to the exposure of substrate defects. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully control the conditions of hydrogen etching in practical applications to avoid adverse effects. These findings have important guiding significance for optimizing the quality of epitaxial wafers.

Pinch milling is a new technique for slender and long blade machining, which can simultaneously improve the machining quality and efficiency. However, two-cutter orientation planning is a major challenge due to the irregular blade surfaces and the structural constraints of nine-axis machine tools. In this paper, a method of twin-tool smoothing orientation determination is proposed for a thin-walled blade with pinch milling. Considering the processing status of the two cutters and workpiece, the feasible domain of the twin-tool axis vector and its characterization method are defined. At the same time, an evaluation algorithm of global and local optimization is proposed, and a smoothing algorithm is explored within the feasible domain along the two tool paths. Finally, a set of smoothly aligned tool orientations are generated, and the overall smoothness is nearly globally optimized. A preliminary simulation verification of the proposed algorithm is conducted on a turbine blade model and the planning tool orientation is found to be stable, smooth, and well formed, which avoids collision interference and ultimately improves the machining accuracy of the blade with difficult-to-machine materials.

The demand for strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) structures has increased considerably. Implementing carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) bars and concrete jacketing are the most effective techniques for RC beam retrofitting. Using the mechanical anchorage system (MAS) to attach CFRP bars to old concrete is highly recommended to avoid any debonding when it is applied to cyclic loads. However, the design of strengthening details is the most challenging issue because it involves many effective parameters. In this study, a design process for strengthening beams using CFRP bars with new MASs and concrete jacketing is proposed, and various design schemes are studied. The number of applied MASs and the thickness and grade of the concrete jacket were investigated through experimental testing and finite element (FE) simulations to define strengthening design details, such as the number and size of employed CFRP bars. Accordingly, an analytical technique was formulated to predict the performance of the strengthened beam in terms of the nominal ultimate load. The results demonstrated the high performance of the proposed system in preventing premature debonding. The proposed system enhances the beam capacity from 44 kN to 83 kN, representing an increase of more than 90%. In contrast, the conventional near-surface mounted (NSM) system exhibits a lower percentage increase at less than 37%. Both FE simulations and analytical approaches can be effectively employed to predict the behavior and capacity of the strengthened beam while considering various design parameters.

Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) are prevalent in the elderly population and might be the source of back pain if they are fresh and yet unhealed. In many cases, it is a diagnostic challenge to differentiate fresh VCFs from healed united fractures, which retain similar radiographic characteristics but no longer generate pain. This information is crucial for appropriate management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of bone scintigraphy (BS) in identifying fresh VCFs appropriate for targeted treatment when compared to the findings of Computerized Tomography (CT). : We retrospectively reviewed 190 patients with back pain suspected to stem from a recent VCF that underwent both a CT and a BS and compared the imaging patterns per vertebra. : The studies were concordant in the majority of cases (95.5%), diagnosing 84.4% normal vertebrae, 6.4% acute VCFs, and 4.7% chronic VCFs. However, in 37 patients, 45 occult acute VCFs were only detected on BS and not on CT. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that these patients were older and had lower bone density compared to the rest of the study population. Additionally, 40 patients had acute VCFs visible on CT, but with no increased or low intensity uptake on BS. These cases were associated with a shorter time period between trauma and BS, a higher prevalence of male patients, and a higher bone density. Acute VCFs with no increased uptake or low levels of uptake were found only within the first six days of the trauma. : BS detects radiologically occult fractures and can differentiate if a radiographically evident VCF is indeed clinically active, guiding possible treatment options. To avoid missing acute VCFs, BS should be performed six days or more after the injury.

: This study assesses the effects of the 'Radiant' image enhancement technique on fetal nuchal translucency (NT) measurements during first-trimester sonographic exams. : A retrospective analysis of 263 ultrasound images of first-trimester midsagittal sections was conducted. NT measurements were obtained using a semi-automatic tool. Statistical methods were applied to compare NT measurements with and without 'Radiant' enhancement. An in vitro setup with predefined line distances provided additional data. : Incremental increases in NT measurements were observed with varying levels of 'Radiant' application: an average increase of 0.19 mm with 'Radiant min', 0.24 mm with 'Radiant mid', and 0.30 mm with 'Radiant max.' The in vitro results supported these findings, showing consistent effects on line thickness and measurement accuracy, with the smallest mean deviation occurring at the 'Radiant mid' setting. : 'Radiant' image enhancement leads to significant increases in NT measurements. To avoid systematic biases in clinical assessments, it is advisable to disable 'Radiant' during NT measurement procedures. Further studies are necessary to corroborate these findings and to consider updates to the NT reference tables based on this technology.
