Chronic administration of cannabinoid agonists ACEA (CB1), AM1241 (CB2), and CP55,940 (mixed CB1/CB2) induce sex-specific differences in tolerance and sex hormone changes in a chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy.
Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common side effect of chemotherapy treatment, routinely manifesting as increased pain sensitivity (allodynia) in distal extremities. Despite its prevalence, effective treatment options are limited. Cannabinoids are increasingly being evaluated for their ability to treat chronic pain conditions, including CIPN. While previous studies have revealed sex differences in cannabinoid-mediated antinociception in acute and chronic pain models, there is a paucity of studies addressing potential sex differences in the response of CIPN to cannabinoid treatment. Therefore, we evaluated the long-term anti-allodynic efficacy of CB-selective (ACEA), CB-selective (AM1241), and CB/CB mixed (CP55,940) agonists in the cisplatin CIPN model, using both male and female mice. CB selective agonism was observed to have sex differences in the development of tolerance to anti-allodynic effects, with females developing tolerance more rapidly than males, while the anti-allodynic effects of selective CB agonism lacked tolerance development. Compound-specific changes to the female estrous cycle and female plasma estradiol levels were noted, with CB selective agonism decreasing plasma estradiol while CB selective agonism increased plasma estradiol. Chronic administration of a mixed CB/CB agonist resulted in increased mRNA expression of proinflammatory cytokines and endocannabinoid regulatory enzymes in female spinal cord tissue. Ovarian tissue was noted to have proinflammatory cytokine mRNA expression following administration of a CB acting compound while selective CB agonism resulted in decreased proinflammatory cytokines and endocannabinoid regulatory enzymes in testes. These results support the need for further investigation into the role of sex and sex hormones signaling in pain and cannabinoid-mediated antinociceptive effects. CIPN is a common side effect of chemotherapy. We have found that both CB1 and CB2 receptor agonism produce antinociceptive effects in a cisplatin CIPN model. We observed that tolerance to CB1-mediated antinociception developed faster in females and did not develop for CB¬2-mediated antinociception. Additionally, we found contrasting roles for CB1/CB¬2 receptors in the regulation of plasma estradiol in females, with CB1 agonism attenuating estradiol and CB¬2 agonism enhancing estradiol. These findings support the exploration of cannabinoid agonists for CIPN.

The successful unfolding of many social interactions relies on our capacity to predict other people's action goals, whether these are proximal (i.e., immediate) or distal (i.e., upcoming). The present set of studies asks whether observers can predict the distal goal of two-step action sequences when presented with communicative modulations of the first movement component of the sequence. We conducted three online experiments in which we presented participants with animations of a box moving to a first target location before moving onwards to a final, either near or far, target location. The second movement component and the target locations were occluded. After observing the first movement, participants were asked to select the most likely final target location, i.e., the distal goal of the sequence. Experiment 1 showed that participants relied on the velocity modulations of the first movement to infer the distal goal. The results of Experiment 2 indicated that such predictions of distal goals are possible even when the second movement in the sequence does not contain any velocity information, thus suggesting that the information present in the first movement plays the major role in the process of linking movements to their distal goals. However, Experiment 3 showed that under some circumstances the second movement can also contribute to how observers predict a distal goal. We discuss these results in terms of the underlying simulation processes that enable observers to predict a distal goal from the observation of proximal communicative modulations.

Successful polyethylene glycol fusion (PEG-fusion) of severed axons following peripheral nerve injuries for PEG-fused axons has been reported to: (1) rapidly restore electrophysiological continuity; (2) prevent distal Wallerian Degeneration and maintain their myelin sheaths; (3) promote primarily motor, voluntary behavioral recoveries as assessed by the Sciatic Functional Index; and, (4) rapidly produce correct and incorrect connections in many possible combinations that produce rapid and extensive recovery of functional peripheral nervous system/central nervous system connections and reflex (e.g., toe twitch) or voluntary behaviors. The preceding companion paper describes sensory terminal field reorganization following PEG-fusion repair of sciatic nerve transections or ablations; however, sensory behavioral recovery has not been explicitly explored following PEG-fusion repair. In the current study, we confirmed the success of PEG-fusion surgeries according to criteria (1-3) above and more extensively investigated whether PEG-fusion enhanced mechanical nociceptive recovery following sciatic transection in male and female outbred Sprague-Dawley and inbred Lewis rats. Mechanical nociceptive responses were assessed by measuring withdrawal thresholds using von Frey filaments on the dorsal and midplantar regions of the hindpaws. Dorsal von Frey filament test was a more reliable method than plantar von Frey filament test to assess mechanical nociceptive sensitivity following sciatic nerve transections. Baseline withdrawal thresholds of the sciatic-mediated lateral dorsal region differed significantly across strain but not sex. Withdrawal thresholds did not change significantly from baseline in chronic Unoperated and Sham-operated rats. Following sciatic transection, all rats exhibited severe hyposensitivity to stimuli at the lateral dorsal region of the hindpaw ipsilateral to the injury. However, PEG-fused rats exhibited significantly earlier return to baseline withdrawal thresholds than Negative Control rats. Furthermore, PEG-fused rats with significantly improved Sciatic Functional Index scores at or after 4 weeks postoperatively exhibited yet-earlier von Frey filament recovery compared with those without Sciatic Functional Index recovery, suggesting a correlation between successful pPEG-fusion and both motor-dominant and sensory-dominant behavioral recoveries. This correlation was independent of the sex or strain of the rat. Furthermore, our data showed that the acceleration of von Frey filament sensory recovery to baseline was solely due to the PEG-fused sciatic nerve and not saphenous nerve collateral outgrowths. No chronic hypersensitivity developed in any rat up to 12 weeks. All these data suggest that PEG-fusion repair of transection peripheral nerve injuries could have important clinical benefits.

BACKGROUND
Advancements in surgical techniques have improved outcomes in patients undergoing pancreatic surgery. To date there have been no meta-analyses comparing robotic and laparoscopic approaches for distal pancreatectomies (DP) in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC). This systematic review and network meta-analysis aims to explore the oncological outcomes of laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy (LDP), robotic distal pancreatectomy (RDP) and open distal pancreatectomy (ODP).
METHODS
A systematic search was conducted for studies reporting laparoscopic, robotic or open surgery for DP. Frequentist network meta-analysis of oncological outcomes (overall survival, resection margins, tumor recurrence, examined lymph nodes, administration of adjuvant therapy) were performed.
RESULTS
Fifteen studies totalling 9,301 patients were included in the network meta-analysis. 1,946, 605 and 6,750 patients underwent LDP, RDP and ODP respectively. LDP (HR: 0.761, 95% CI: 0.642-0.901, = 0.002) and RDP (HR: 0.757, 95% CI: 0.617-0.928, = 0.008) were associated with overall survival (OS) benefit when compared to ODP. LDP (HR: 1.00, 95% CI: 0.793-1.27, = 0.968) was not associated with OS benefit when compared to RDP. There were no significant differences between LDP, RDP and ODP for resection margins, tumor recurrence, examined lymph nodes and administration of adjuvant therapy.
CONCLUSION
This study highlights the longer OS in both LDP and RDP when compared to ODP for patients with PDAC.

AIM
Significant gastrointestinal hemorrhages, resulting from long-term compression of the duodenum by a hepatic pseudoaneurysm (HAPA), is an extremely rare condition. In fact, when the pseudoaneurysm is small in diameter, diagnosis can be particularly challenging. Timely and effective diagnosis and treatment is therefore of great significance, and in this case, endoscopy, combined with intravascular therapy, can provide an effective approach, especially since it removes the need for surgery while yielding favorable outcomes.
CASE SUMMARY
A 75-year-old old man presented to the hospital's emergency department with hematemesis and black stool. Despite conservative treatments such as "acid suppression, fluid resupply, hemostasis and blood transfusion", no significant improvement was noted. Emergency gastroscopy subsequently revealed an ulcer in the duodenal bulb (Figure 1), with an exposed thrombotic head and active bleeding on the surface. In addition, abdominal computed tomography (Figure 2) showed no obvious HAPA manifestations. After unsuccessful endoscopic hemostasis, angiography was performed (Figure 3) and a pseudotumor-like dilatation measuring 5.56 mm in diameter was found at the distal end of the proximal branch vessel of the common hepatic artery. Following spring coil embolization (Figure 4), the patient's condition improved and he was discharged from the hospital, with a follow-up after six months showing no signs of recurrence or complications.
CONCLUSION
Duodenal ulcer hemorrhages due to small hepatic pseudoaneurysms are very rare, with endoscopic intervention being effective for such cases.

Review
Intestinal ischemia/reperfusion is a prevalent pathological process that can result in intestinal dysfunction, bacterial translocation, energy metabolism disturbances, and subsequent harm to distal tissues and organs via the circulatory system. Acute lung injury frequently arises as a complication of intestinal ischemia/reperfusion, exhibiting early onset and a grim prognosis. Without appropriate preventative measures and efficacious interventions, this condition may progress to acute respiratory distress syndrome and elevate mortality rates. Nonetheless, the precise mechanisms and efficacious treatments remain elusive. This paper synthesizes recent research models and pertinent injury evaluation criteria within the realm of acute lung injury induced by intestinal ischemia/reperfusion. The objective is to investigate the roles of pathophysiological mechanisms like oxidative stress, inflammatory response, apoptosis, ferroptosis, and pyroptosis; and to assess the strengths and limitations of current therapeutic approaches for acute lung injury stemming from intestinal ischemia/reperfusion. The goal is to elucidate potential targets for enhancing recovery rates, identify suitable treatment modalities, and offer insights for translating fundamental research into clinical applications.

BACKGROUND
Periodontitis preceded by gingivitis is the most common form of periodontal disease and occurs due to the interaction of microorganisms present in the complex bacterial aggregates of dental plaque biofilm and their metabolism products with periodontal tissues. Histamine is a heterocyclic biogenic amine acting via four types of receptors. Histamine H receptors act as presynaptic auto/heteroreceptors to regulate the release of histamine and other neurotransmitters.
AIM
Since the nervous system is able to regulate the progression of the inflammatory process and bone metabolism, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of DL76, which acts as an antagonist/inverse agonist of H receptors, on the course of experimental periodontitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
This study was conducted in 24 mature male Wistar rats weighing 245-360 g, aged 6-8 weeks. A silk ligature was placed on the second maxillary molar of the right maxilla under general anesthesia. From the day of ligating, DL76 and 0.9% NaCl solutions were administered subcutaneously for 28 days in the experimental and control groups, respectively. After the experiment, histopathological, immunohistochemical and radiological examinations were performed.
RESULTS
Ligation led to the development of the inflammatory process with lymphocytic infiltration, increased epithelial RANKL and OPG expression as well as bone resorption. DL76 evoked a reduction in (1) lymphocytic infiltration, (2) RANKL and OPG expression as well as (3) bone resorption since the medians of the mesial and distal interdental spaces in the molars with induced periodontitis were 3.56-fold and 10-fold lower compared to the corresponding values in saline-treated animals with periodontitis.
CONCLUSION
DL76 is able to inhibit the progression of experimental periodontitis in rats, as demonstrated by a reduction in the inflammatory cell infiltration, a decrease in the RANKL/RANK OPG pathway expression and a reduction in the alveolar bone resorption.

Tissue imaging is crucial in oral cancer diagnostics. Imaging techniques such as X-ray imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and computed tomography (CT) enable the visualization and analysis of tissues, aiding in the detection and diagnosis of cancers. A significant amount of research has been conducted on designing OCT probes for tissue imaging, but most probes are either heavy, bulky and require external mounting or are lightweight but straight. This study addresses these challenges, resulting in a curved lightweight, low-voltage and compact handheld imaging probe for oral soft tissue examination. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first curved handheld OCT probe with its shape optimized for oral applications. This probe features highly compact all-fiber optics with a diameter of 125 μm and utilizes innovative central deflection magnetic actuation for controlled beam scanning. To ensure vertical stability while scanning oral soft tissues, the fiber was secured through multiple narrow slits at the probe's distal end. This apparatus was encased in a 3D-printed angular cylinder tube (15 mm outer diameter, 12 mm inner diameter and 160 mm in length, weighing < 20 g). An angle of 115° makes the probe easy to hold and suitable for scanning in space-limited locations. To validate the feasibility of this probe, we conducted assessments on a multi-layered imaging phantom and human tissues, visualizing microstructural features with high contrast.

Different modifications of the standard bread recipe have been proposed to improve its nutritional and health benefits. Here, we utilized the Human Gut Simulator (HGS) to assess the fermentation of one such artisan bread by human gut microbiota. Dried and milled bread, composed of almond flour, psyllium husks, and flax seeds as its three main ingredients, was first subjected to an protocol designed to mimic human oro-gastro-intestinal digestion. The bread digest was then supplied to complex human gut microbial communities, replacing the typical Western diet-based medium (WM) of the GHS system. Switching the medium from WM to bread digest resulted in statistically significant alterations in the community structure, encoded functions, produced short-chain fatty acids, and available antioxidants. The abundances of dietary fiber degraders , , and increased; levels of , , and decreased. These community alterations resembled the previously revealed differences in the distal gut microbiota of healthy human subjects consuming typical Mediterranean vs. Western-pattern diets. Therefore, the consumption of bread high in dietary fiber and unsaturated fatty acids might recapitulate the beneficial effects of the Mediterranean diet on the gut microbiota.

The nematode family Aphelenchoididiae is considered fungal-feeding, predatory, or root hair feeders. Some members of this family are universally present in agricultural landscapes and are an integral part of soil health and conservation studies. In the present soil nematode biodiversity survey, we detected four species of the genera , , and . Because fungal-feeding nematodes from southern Alberta have not previously been reported, we conducted a detailed morphological and molecular investigation, identifying these species as , , n. sp. and n. sp. The first two species we document as new records from southern Alberta, whereas n. sp. and n. sp. we describe in detail as new taxa. Briefly, n. sp. is an amphimictic species having 4 lateral lines; hemispherical anteriorly flattened lip region; delicate stylet and swelling-like stylet knobs; excretory pore at the posterior edge of nerve ring. Female tail conical, gradually tapering towards a truncated end with single mucro. Spicule 23.0 (20.0-25.0) µm long having elongated rounded condylus, small, blunt conical rostrum, and lamina that gradually tapers towards the rounded distal end; three pairs of caudal papillae were present on the male tail. n. sp., is a parthenogenetic species with 3 lines in the lateral fields; lip region rounded, anteriorly flattened; stylet robust, with knobs rounded to bean-shaped; excretory pore located posterior to nerve ring; reproductive components were quite indiscernible with a short 24.0 (18.0-27.0) µm post-vulval uterine sac; tail conical, ending with pointed to wedge-shaped tip. We performed molecular characterizations for each species and constructed phylogenetic trees to study the phylogenetic relationship of these aphelenchid species. The discovery of n. sp. and n. sp. indicates that soil nematode diversity is relatively unexplored in southern Alberta. The findings of this study will significantly enhance the identification processes and may contribute towards future soil health and biodiversity efforts.
