Human immunodeficiency virus prevalence was increasing worldwide. Medication-associated urinary calculi are very commonly caused by medications used to treat HIV-positive patients. We present a case of an HIV-positive 39-year-old male with ureteral stent encrustation and kidney stone. Ureterolithotripsy using a disposable flexible ureteroscope is performed. The postoperative evolution was favorable. The disposable flexible ureteroscope is effective in the treatment of HIV combined with ureteral stent encrustation.

In recent years, the production of volatile fatty acids (VFA) through mixed culture fermentation (MCF) has been gaining attention. Most authors have focused on the fermentation of carbohydrates, while other possible substrates, such as proteins, have not been considered. Moreover, there is little information about how operational parameters affect the microbial communities involved in these processes, even though they are strongly related to reactor performance and VFA selectivity. Hence, this study aims to evaluate how microbial composition changes according to three different parameters (pH, type of protein and micronutrient addition) during anaerobic fermentation of protein-rich side streams. For this, two continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTR) were fed with two different proteins (casein and gelatine) and operated at different conditions: three pH values (5.0, 7.0 and 9.0) with only macronutrients supplementation and two pH values (5.0 and 7.0) with micronutrients' supplementation as well. Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were the dominant phyla in the two reactors at all operational conditions, but their relative abundance varied with the parameters studied. At pH 7.0 and 9.0, the microbial composition was mainly affected by protein type, while at acidic conditions the driving force was the pH. The influence of micronutrients was dependent on the pH and the protein type, with a special effect on Clostridiales and Bacteroidales populations. Overall, this study shows that the acidogenic microbial community is affected by the three parameters studied and the changes in the microbial community can partially explain the macroscopic results, especially the process selectivity.

A major worldwide health problem, Helicobacter Pylori (H. pylori) infection is associated with a number of gastrointestinal disorders, such as gastric cancer and peptic ulcers. The shortcomings of traditional treatment plans often include adverse effects, low patient compliance, and the emergence of antibiotic resistance. Investigating different delivery methods is thus necessary to improve the effectiveness of treatment. Mucoadhesive microspheres show promise as a method for delivering anti H. pylori drugs in a targeted and sustained manner. With their ability to stick to the stomach mucosa, these microspheres increase the local concentration of the medication and guarantee a more thorough removal of the pathogen. The potential of Mucoadhesive microspheres in the management of H. pylori infection is examined in this review. We explore the properties and benefits of Mucoadhesive polymers, the production techniques for microspheres, and the variables affecting their functionality. To provide a thorough grasp of this delivery system, a variety of drug-loading strategies, release mechanisms, and in vitro and in vivo assessment methodologies are covered. The potential of Mucoadhesive microspheres to overcome the drawbacks of traditional therapy is shown by highlighting recent developments in their formulation and their therapeutic consequences. Mucoadhesive microspheres constitute an important advancement in the treatment of Helicobacter pylori because they guarantee a regulated release of antibiotics and improve medication absorption at the site of infection. In order to fully appreciate the advantages of this novel delivery method, further study is necessary. Future research paths and the difficulties in the clinical translation of this technology are also discussed.

Prior research has established the anti-apoptotic effects in insect cell cultures of () hemolymph, as well as the heightened production yields of recombinant proteins facilitated by baculovirus vectors in insect cells cultivated in media supplemented with this hemolymph. In this study, we investigated the hemolymph of another Lepidoptera species, (), and observed similar beneficial effects in insect cells cultivated in media supplemented with this natural substance. We observed enhancements in both production yield (approximately 1.5 times higher) and late-stage cell viabilities post-infection (30-40% higher). Storage-protein 2 from (SP2Bm) has previously been identified as one of the abundant hemolymph proteins potentially responsible for the beneficial effects observed after the use of hemolymph-supplemented cell culture media. By employing a dual baculovirus vector that co-expresses the SP2Bm protein alongside the GFP protein, we achieved a threefold increase in reporter protein production compared to a baculovirus vector expressing GFP alone. This study underscores the potential of hemolymph proteins sourced from various Lepidoptera species as biotechnological tools to augment baculovirus vector productivities, whether utilized as natural supplements in cell culture media or as hemolymph-derived recombinant proteins co-expressed by baculovirus vectors.

The menace of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections among low- and middle-income countries with no access to a free HPV vaccine is a public health concern. HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Nigeria, while the most known types of HPV genotypes being transmitted are the high-risk HPV-16 and 18 genotypes. In this study, we explored the predictors of self-reported HPV infections and HPV genital warts infection among a population of students, non-academic staff, and academic staff of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) University located in Lapai, Nigeria. We also assessed their knowledge about HPV infections and genotypes, and sexual behaviors. An online cross-sectional study was conducted by setting up a structured questionnaire on Google Forms and it was distributed to the university community via Facebook and other social media platforms of the university. The form captured questions on HPV infection, and knowledge about HPV infection and genotypes, as well as the sexual health of the participants. All variables were described using frequencies and percentage distribution; chi-squared test statistics were used to explore the association between HPV infection (medical records of HPV infection) and the participants' profile, and a logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the factors associated with HPV genital warts infection among the population. This study reveals those participants between the ages of 26-40 years (81.3%) and those currently not in a sexually active relationship-single/divorced (26.4%)-who have self-reported having the HPV-16 and -18 genotypes. Moreover, participants between 26-40 years of age (OR: 0.45, 95%CI: 0.22-0.89) reported themselves to be carriers of HPV genital warts. Therefore, this study reveals the factors associated with HPV infection and genital warts peculiar to IBB university students and staff. Hence, we suggest the need for HPV awareness programs and free HPV vaccine availability at IBB university.

The interface between material science and ophthalmic medicine is witnessing significant advances with the introduction of biopolymers in medical device fabrication. This review discusses the impact of biopolymers on the development of ophthalmic devices, such as intraocular lenses, stents, and various prosthetics. Biopolymers are emerging as superior alternatives due to their biocompatibility, mechanical robustness, and biodegradability, presenting an advance over traditional materials with respect to patient comfort and environmental considerations. We explore the spectrum of biopolymers used in ophthalmic devices and evaluate their physical properties, compatibility with biological tissues, and clinical performances. Specific applications in oculoplastic and orbital surgeries, hydrogel applications in ocular therapeutics, and polymeric drug delivery systems for a range of ophthalmic conditions were reviewed. We also anticipate future directions and identify challenges in the field, advocating for a collaborative approach between material science and ophthalmic practice to foster innovative, patient-focused treatments. This synthesis aims to reinforce the potential of biopolymers to improve ophthalmic device technology and enhance clinical outcomes.

Movement-related cortical potential (MRCP) is observed in EEG recordings prior to a voluntary movement. It has been used for e.g., quantifying motor learning and for brain-computer interfacing (BCIs). The MRCP amplitude is affected by various factors, but the effect of caffeine is underexplored. The aim of this study was to investigate if a cup of coffee with 85 mg caffeine modulated the MRCP amplitude and the classification of MRCPs versus idle activity, which estimates BCI performance. Twenty-six healthy participants performed 2 × 100 ankle dorsiflexion separated by a 10-min break before a cup of coffee was consumed, followed by another 100 movements. EEG was recorded during the movements and divided into epochs, which were averaged to extract three average MRCPs that were compared. Also, idle activity epochs were extracted. Features were extracted from the epochs and classified using random forest analysis. The MRCP amplitude did not change after consuming caffeine. There was a slight increase of two percentage points in the classification accuracy after consuming caffeine. In conclusion, a cup of coffee with 85 mg caffeine does not affect the MRCP amplitude, and improves MRCP-based BCI performance slightly. The findings suggest that drinking coffee is only a minor confounder in MRCP-related studies.

The complexity of information processing in the brain requires the development of technologies that can provide spatial and temporal resolution by means of dense electrode arrays paired with high-channel-count signal acquisition electronics. In this work, we present an ultra-low noise modular 512-channel neural recording circuit that is scalable to up to 4096 simultaneously recording channels. The neural readout application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) uses a dense 8.2 mm × 6.8 mm 2D layout to enable high-channel count, creating an ultra-light 350 mg flexible module. The module can be deployed on headstages for small animals like rodents and songbirds, and it can be integrated with a variety of electrode arrays. The chip was fabricated in a TSMC 0.18 µm 1.8 V CMOS technology and dissipates a total of 125 mW. Each DC-coupled channel features a gain and bandwidth programmable analog front-end along with 14 b analog-to-digital conversion at speeds up to 30 kS/s. Additionally, each front-end includes programmable electrode plating and electrode impedance measurement capability. We present both standalone and in vivo measurements results, demonstrating the readout of spikes and field potentials that are modulated by a sensory input.

The monitoring of body temperature is a recent addition to the plethora of parameters provided by wellness and fitness wearable devices. Current wearable temperature measurements are made at the skin surface, a measurement that is impacted by the ambient environment of the individual. The use of near-infrared spectroscopy provides the potential for a measurement below the epidermal layer of skin, thereby having the potential advantage of being more reflective of physiological conditions. The feasibility of noninvasive temperature measurements is demonstrated by using an in vitro model designed to mimic the near-infrared spectra of skin. A miniaturizable solid-state laser-diode-based near-infrared spectrometer was used to collect diffuse reflectance spectra for a set of seven tissue phantoms composed of different amounts of water, gelatin, and Intralipid. Temperatures were varied between 20-24 °C while collecting these spectra. Two types of partial least squares (PLS) calibration models were developed to evaluate the analytical utility of this approach. In both cases, the collected spectra were used without pre-processing and the number of latent variables was the only optimized parameter. The first approach involved splitting the whole dataset into separate calibration and prediction subsets for which a single optimized PLS model was developed. For this first case, the coefficient of determination (R) is 0.95 and the standard error of prediction (SEP) is 0.22 °C for temperature predictions. The second strategy used a leave-one-phantom-out methodology that resulted in seven PLS models, each predicting the temperatures for all spectra in the held-out phantom. For this set of phantom-specific predicted temperatures, R and SEP values range from 0.67-0.99 and 0.19-0.65 °C, respectively. The stability and reproducibility of the sample-to-spectrometer interface are identified as major sources of spectral variance within and between phantoms. Overall, results from this in vitro study justify the development of future in vivo measurement technologies for applications as wearables for continuous, real-time monitoring of body temperature for both healthy and ill individuals.

Telehealth and remote patient monitoring (RPM), in particular, have been through a massive surge of adoption since 2020. This initiative has proven potential for the patient and the healthcare provider in areas such as reductions in the cost of care. While home-use medical devices or wearables have been shown to be beneficial, a literature review illustrates challenges with the data generated, driven by limited device usability. This could lead to inaccurate data when an exam is completed without clinical supervision, with the consequence that incorrect data lead to improper treatment. Upon further analysis of the existing literature, the RPM Usability Impact model is introduced. The goal is to guide researchers and device manufacturers to increase the usability of wearable and home-use medical devices in the future. The importance of this model is highlighted when the user-centered design process is integrated, which is needed to develop these types of devices to provide the proper user experience.
