The equilibrium theory of island biogeography (ETIB) is a widely applied dynamic theory proposed in the 1960s to explain why islands have coherent differences in species richness. The development of the ETIB was temporarily challenged in the 1970s by the alternative static theory of ecological impoverishment (TEI). The TEI suggests that the number of species on an island is determined by its number of habitats or niches but, with no clear evidence relating species richness to the number of niches however, the TEI has been almost dismissed as a theory in favour of the original ETIB. Here, we show that the number of climatic niches on islands is an important predictor of the species richness of plants, herpetofauna and land birds. We therefore propose a model called the niche-based theory of island biogeography (NTIB), based on the MacroEcological Theory on the Arrangement of Life (METAL), which successfully integrates the number of niches sensu Hutchinson into ETIB. To account for greater species turnover at the beginning of colonisation, we include higher initial extinction rates. When we test our NTIB for resident land birds in the Krakatau Islands, it reveals a good correspondence with observed species richness, immigration and extinction rates. Provided the environmental regime remains unchanged, we estimate that the current species richness at equilibrium is ~45 species (range between 38.39 and 61.51). Our NTIB provides better prediction because it counts for changes in species richness with latitude, which is not considered in any theory of island biogeography.

BACKGROUND
Major depressive disorder (MDD) pathogenesis may involve metalloids in a significant way. The aim of our study was to identify potential links between MDD and metalloid elements [boron (B), germanium (Ge), arsenic (As), antimony (Sb)].
METHODS
A total of 72 MDD cases and 75 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited from Zhumadian Second People's Hospital in Henan Province, China. The levels of four metallic elements (B, Ge, As, and Sb) in the serum and urine were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).
RESULTS
In comparison to the HCs, the B, As, and Sb levels were considerably lower in the MDD group ( < 0.05) in the serum; the MDD group had significantly higher ( < 0.05) and significantly lower ( < 0.001) B and Sb levels in the urine. After adjusting for potential confounders, serum B (OR = 0.120; 95% CI, 0.048, 0.300; < 0.001) and Sb (OR = 0.133; 95% CI, 0.055, 0.322; < 0.001) showed a negative correlation with MDD. Urine B had a negative correlation (OR = 0.393; 95% CI, 0.193, 0.801; = 0.01) with MDD, while urine Sb had a positive correlation (OR = 3.335; 95% CI, 1.654, 6.726; = 0.001) with MDD.
CONCLUSION
Our current research offers insightful hints for future investigation into the function of metalloids in connection to MDD processes.

Oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) containing unmethylated cytosine-phosphate-guanosine (CpG) motifs are readily recognized by Toll-like receptor 9 on immune cells, trigger an immunomodulatory cascade, induce a Th1 -biased immune milieu, and have great potential as an adjuvant in cancer vaccines. In this study, a green one-step synthesis process was adopted to prepare an amino-rich metal-organic nanoplatform (FN). The synthesized FN nanoplatform can simultaneously and effectively load model tumor antigens (OVA)/autologous tumor antigens (dLLC) and immunostimulatory CpG ODNs with an unmodified PD backbone and a guanine quadruplex structure to obtain various cancer vaccines. The FN nanoplatform and immunostimulatory CpG ODNs generate synergistic effects to enhance the immunogenicity of different antigens and inhibit the growth of established and distant tumors in both the murine E.G7-OVA lymphoma model and the murine Lewis lung carcinoma model. In the E.G7-OVA lymphoma model, vaccination efficiently increases the CD4, CD8, and tetramerCD8 T cell populations in the spleens. In the Lewis lung carcinoma model, vaccination efficiently increases the CD3CD4 and CD3CD8 T cell populations in the spleens and CD3CD8, CD3CD8, and CD11bCD80 cell populations in the tumors, suggesting the alteration of tumor microenvironments from cold to hot tumors.

Review
Recent advancements in vaccine delivery systems have seen the utilization of various materials, including lipids, polymers, peptides, metals, and inorganic substances, for constructing non-viral vectors. Among these, lipid-based nanoparticles, composed of natural, synthetic, or physiological lipid/phospholipid materials, offer significant advantages such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and safety, making them ideal for vaccine delivery. These lipid-based vectors can protect encapsulated antigens and/or mRNA from degradation, precisely tune chemical and physical properties to mimic viruses, facilitate targeted delivery to specific immune cells, and enable efficient endosomal escape for robust immune activation. Notably, lipid-based vaccines, exemplified by those developed by BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna against COVID-19, have gained approval for human use. This review highlights rational design strategies for vaccine delivery, emphasizing lymphoid organ targeting and effective endosomal escape. It also discusses the importance of rational formulation design and structure-activity relationships, along with reviewing components and potential applications of lipid-based vectors. Additionally, it addresses current challenges and future prospects in translating lipid-based vaccine therapies for cancer and infectious diseases into clinical practice.

Bacteriophages (phages) are viruses that infect the bacteria within which their reproduction cycle takes place, a process that ends in the lysis and death of the bacterial cell. Some phages are also able to destroy bacterial biofilms. Due to increased antibiotics resistance, , another biofilm-forming pathogen, is a problem in many parts of the world. Zinc oxide (ZnO) and other metal nanoparticles (NPs) are biologically active and also possess anti-biofilm properties. ZnO-NPs were prepared by the green synthesis method using orange peels. The vibrational peaks of the ZnO-NPs were analyzed using FTIR analysis, and their size and morphological properties were determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The ability of the ZnO-NPs to reduce or eliminate biofilm alone or in combination with phages PB10 and PA19 was investigated. The cells were effectively killed in the preformed 48 h biofilms during a 24 h incubation with the ZnO-NP-phage combination, in comparison with the control or ZnO-NPs alone. The treatments on growing biofilms were most efficient in the final stages of biofilm development. All five treatment groups showed a significant biofilm reduction compared to the control group ( < 0.0001) at 48 h of incubation. The influence of the ZnO-NPs and phages on the quorum sensing system of was monitored by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) of the autoinducer biosynthesis gene . While the ZnO-NPs repressed the gene transcription, the phages slightly activated it at 24 and 48 h of incubation. Also, the effect of the ZnO-NPs and phage PA19 on the viability of HFF2 cells was investigated and the results showed that the combination of NPs with PA19 reduced the toxic effect of ZnO-NPs and also stimulated the growth in normal cells.

The adsorption mechanism of superabsorbent polymer (SAP) can provide theoretical guidance for their practical applications in different environments. However, there has been limited research on the mechanism of attapulgite-sodium polyacrylate. This research aimed to compare the Cd(II) adsorption characteristics and water retention properties of organic-inorganic composite SAP (attapulgite-sodium polyacrylate, OSAP) and organic SAP (polyacrylamide, JSAP). Batch experiments were used to investigate the kinetics of Cd(II) adsorption, as well as the thermodynamic properties and factors influencing these properties. The results show that the Cd(II) adsorption capacity was directly proportional to the pH value. The maximum adsorption capacities of OSAP and JSAP were of 770 and 345 mg·g. The Cd(II) adsorption for OSAP and JSAP conformed to the Langmuir and the quasi-second-order kinetic model. This indicates that chemical adsorption is the primary mechanism. The adsorption process was endothermic (ΔH > 0) and spontaneous (ΔG < 0). The water adsorption ratios of OSAP and SAP were 474.8 and 152.6 in pure water. The ratio decreases with the increase in Cd(II) concentration. OSAP and JSAP retained 67.23% and 38.37% of the initial water adsorption after six iterations of water adsorption. Hence, OSAP is more suitable than JSAP for agricultural and environmental ecological restoration in arid and semi-arid regions.

Traditional metal-plastic dissimilar welding methods directly heat the metal workpiece, which may cause potential thermal damage to the metal workpiece. Ultrasonic extruded weld-riveting (UEWR) is a relatively new method for dissimilar joining of carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic (CFRTP) and metal. In this method, the CFRTP workpiece is melted using the ultrasonic effect and is squeezed into prefabricated holes in the metal workpiece to form a rivet structure. In this method, the metal workpiece is not directly heated, and potential high-temperature losses can be avoided. This paper investigates the process characterizations of UERW of AZ31B magnesium alloy to carbon fiber-reinforced PA66. The process parameters are optimized by the Taguchi method. The joint formation process is analyzed based on the fiber distribution in the cross-sections of joints. The effects of welding parameters on the joint microstructure and fracture surface morphology are discussed. The results show that a stepped amplitude strategy (40 μm amplitude in the first stage and 56 μm amplitude in the second stage) could balance the joint strength and joint appearance. Insufficient (welding energy < 2600 J or amplitude-A < 50%) or excessive (welding energy > 2800 J or amplitude-A > 50%) welding parameters lead to the formation of porous defects. Three fracture modes are identified according to the fracture surface analysis. The maximum tensile shear strength of joints at the optimal parameters is about 56.5 ± 6.2 MPa.

Increasing concern over the safety of consumable products, particularly aquatic products, due to freshness issues, has become a pressing issue. Therefore, ensuring the quality and safety of aquatic products is paramount. To address this, a dual-mode colorimetric-fluorescence sensor utilizing Ce-MOF as a mimic peroxidase to detect HS was developed. Ce-MOF was prepared by a conventional solvothermal synthesis method. Ce-MOF catalyzed the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by hydrogen peroxide (HO) to produce blue oxidized TMB (oxTMB). When dissolved, hydrogen sulfide (HS) was present in the solution, and it inhibited the catalytic effect of Ce-MOF and caused the color of the solution to fade from blue to colorless. This change provided an intuitive indication for the detection of HS. Through steady-state dynamic analysis, the working mechanism of this sensor was elucidated. The sensor exhibited pronounced color changes from blue to colorless, accompanied by a shift in fluorescence from none to light blue. Additionally, UV-vis absorption demonstrated a linear correlation with the HS concentration, ranging from 200 to 2300 µM, with high sensitivity (limit of detection, LOD = 0.262 μM). Fluorescence intensity also showed a linear correlation, ranging from 16 to 320 µM, with high selectivity and sensitivity (LOD = 0.156 μM). These results underscore the sensor's effectiveness in detecting HS. Furthermore, the sensor enhanced the accuracy of HS detection and fulfilled the requirements for assessing food freshness and safety.

Silver-based metal-organic decomposition inks composed of silver salts, complexing agents and volatile solvents are now the subject of much research due to the simplicity and variability of their preparation, their high stability and their relatively low sintering temperature. The use of this type of ink in inkjet printing allows for improved cost-effective and environmentally friendly technology for the production of electrical devices, including flexible electronics. An approach to producing a silver salt-based reactive ink for jet printing has been developed. The test images were printed with an inkjet printer onto polyimide substrates, and two-stage thermal sintering was carried out at temperatures of 60 °C and 100-180 °C. The structure and electrical properties of the obtained conductive lines were investigated. As a result, under optimal conditions an electrically conductive film with low surface resistance of approximately 3 Ω/square can be formed.

Novel functionalized and/or grafted crosslinked chitosan adsorbents were synthesized and used to remove several toxic heavy metal ions such as nickel, lead, chromium, and cadmium ions from contaminated water. The chitosan biopolymer was functionalized by maleic anhydride (CS_MA) acting also as a crosslinking agent. Glutaraldehyde-crosslinked chitosan (CS_GA) grafted with poly(methyl methacrylate) (CS_MMA) was also synthesized. The synthesized adsorbents were characterized using a variety of analytical techniques such as SEM, TGA, and FTIR, which confirmed their chemical structures and morphology. The adsorption capacity of the adsorbents was analyzed under various conditions of contact time, adsorbent dose, initial concertation, temperature, and pH and evaluated against those of pure chitosan (CS) and the crosslinked chitosan(CS_GA). The ultimate removal conditions were 0.5 g/100 mL adsorbent dose, an initial metal ion concentration of 50 ppm, a temperature of 45 °C, and pH 9. CS_MMA had the highest removal percentages for all metal ions, ranging from 92% to 94%. The adsorption was demonstrated to fit a pseudo-first-order model that followed a Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The results highlight the capacity of the synthesized polymers to efficiently remove major toxic contaminants at low cost from contaminated water, present especially in low-income areas, without harming the environment.
