A retrospective study.
PURPOSE
To investigate the correlation between Hounsfield unit (HU) values measured by chest computed tomography (CT) and dual-energy Xray absorptiometry (DXA) T-scores. HU-based thoracolumbar (T11 and T12) cutoff thresholds were calculated for a cohort of Chinese patients.
OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE
For patients with osteoporosis, the incidence of fractures in the thoracolumbar segment is significantly higher than that in other sites. However, most current clinical studies have focused on L1.
METHODS
This retrospective study analyzed patients who underwent chest CT and DXA at our hospital between August 2021 and August 2022. Thoracic thoracolumbar segment HU values, lumbar T-scores, and hip T-scores were computed for comparison, and thoracic thoracolumbar segment HU thresholds suggestive of potential bone density abnormalities were established using receiver operating characteristic curves.
RESULTS
In total, 470 patients (72.4% women; mean age, 65.5±12.3 years) were included in this study. DXA revealed that of the 470 patients, 90 (19%) had osteoporosis, 180 (38%) had reduced osteopenia, and 200 (43%) had normal bone mineral density (BMD). To differentiate osteoporosis from osteopenia, the HU threshold was established as 105.1 (sensitivity, 54.4%; specificity, 72.2%) for T11 and 85.7 (sensitivity, 69.4%; specificity, 61.1%) for T12. To differentiate between osteopenia and normal BMD, the HU threshold was 146.7 for T11 (sensitivity, 57.5%; specificity, 84.4%) and 135.7 for T12 (sensitivity, 59.5%; specificity, 80%).
CONCLUSIONS
This study supports the significance of HU values from chest CT for BMD assessment. Chest CT provides a new method for clinical opportunistic screening of osteoporosis. When the T11 HU is >146.7 or the T12 HU is >135.7, additional osteoporosis testing is not needed unless a vertebral fracture is detected. If the T11 HU is <105.1 or the T12 HU is <85.7, further DXA testing is strongly advised. In addition, vertebral HU values that fall faster than those of the T11 and L1 vertebrae may explain the high incidence of T12 vertebral fractures.

PURPOSE
This study aimed to assess the reliability of quantitative computed tomography (QCT) in measuring bone mineral density (BMD) of instrumented vertebrae and investigate the effect of less paraspinal muscle damage on BMD changes after lumbar interbody fusion.
OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE
Patients always experience a decrease in vertebral BMD after lumbar interbody fusion. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has analyzed the effect of paraspinal muscles on BMD changes.
METHODS
This retrospective analysis included a total of 155 patients who underwent single-level lumbar fusion, with 81 patients in the traditional group and 74 patients in the Wiltse group (less paraspinal muscle damage). QCT was used to measure the volumetric BMD (vBMD), Hounsfield unit value, and cross-sectional area of the paraspinal muscles at the upper instrumented vertebrae (UIV), vertebrae one segment above the UIV (UIV+1), and the vertebrae one segment above the UIV+1 (UIV+2). Statistical analyses were performed.
RESULTS
No significant differences in general data were observed between the two groups (p>0.05). Strong correlations were noted between the preoperative and 1-week postoperative vBMD of each segment (p<0.01), with no significant difference between the two time points in both groups (p>0.05). Vertebral BMD loss was significantly higher in UIV+1 and UIV+2 in the traditional group than in the Wiltse group (-13.6%±19.1% vs. -4.2%±16.5%, -10.8%±20.3% vs. -0.9%±37.0%; p<0.05). However, no statistically significant difference was observed in the percent vBMD changes in the UIV segment between the two groups (37.7%±70.1% vs. 36.1%±78.7%, p>0.05).
CONCLUSIONS
QCT can reliably determine BMD in the instrumented spine after lumbar interbody fusion. With QCT, we found that reducing paraspinal muscle destruction through the Wiltse approach during surgery can help preserve the adjacent vertebral BMD; however, it does not help increase the BMD in the instrumented vertebrae.

Global warming, caused by greenhouse gas emissions, is a major challenge for all human societies. To ensure that ambitious carbon neutrality and sustainable economic development goals are met, regional human activities and their impacts on carbon emissions must be studied. Guizhou Province is a typical karst area in China that predominantly uses fossil fuels. In this study, a backpropagation (BP) neural network and extreme learning machine (ELM) model, which is advantageous due to its nonlinear processing, were used to predict carbon emissions from 2020 to 2040 in Guizhou Province. The carbon emissions were calculated using conversion and inventory compilation methods with energy consumption data and the results showed an "S" growth trend. Twelve influencing factors were selected, however, five with larger correlations were screened out using a grey correlation analysis method. A prediction model for carbon emissions from Guizhou Province was established. The prediction performance of a whale optimization algorithm (WOA)-ELM model was found to be higher than the BP neural network and ELM models. Baseline, high-speed, and low-carbon scenarios were analyzed and the size and time of peak carbon emissions in Liaoning Province from 2020 to 2040 were predicted using the WOA-ELM model.

INTRODUCTION
Malnutrition is one of the most serious community health issues in developing countries. This study estimated total energy intake, Iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn), Selenium (Se), Calcium (Ca), and Phosphate (PO4) levels among school-going children (aged 13-17 years) of the underprivileged area in Sindh, Pakistan.
METHODS
Children from Mithi City, District Tharparkar, were selected for this cross-sectional investigation. Students from various schools from both genders who fulfilled the selection criteria were selected. A questionnaire was filled, and five ml blood samples were taken to analyze blood parameters. Each participant's estimated nutrient intake (ENI) per day was assessed and matched to the recommended daily allowance (RDA) to determine their micro and macronutrient intake.
RESULTS
A total of 300 school-going children [150(50%) boys (mean age 15± 0.8 years) and 150(50%) girls (mean age 14±1.3years)] were included in this study. Total calories (1449±949 Kcal vs. 1245±215 Kcal; p < .001), carbohydrates (138±27 gm vs. 126 ±25 gm; p < .001) protein (47±9.1 gm vs. 44±6 gm; p < .001) was significantly higher among boys compared to girls. In contrast, calcium (1094±105 mg vs. 1144±100; 0.004), phosphate 1050±125 vs. 1148±147; p<0.001), iron (9.2±1.7 mg vs. 10±1.3 mg; p<0.001), and Zinc (7.4±1.8 mg vs. 9.9±1.7 mg; p<0.001) intake was significantly higher among girls than boys. Gender-wise comparison of serum metals in school-going children showed that serum iron was significantly lower among girls than boys (100.86±25.65 μg/dl vs. 78.48±28.66 μg/dl; p<0.001), and no difference was found in serum Zn, Se, and Ca levels. Total proteins were also significantly lower among girls than boys (6.48±1.01g/dl vs. 4.87±1.4301g/dl; p<0.001). Serum iron, Ca, and total proteins were significantly lower among girls with normal ranges compared to boys with normal ranges. Total protein was significantly lower among girls below normal ranges than boys with normal ranges (p < .001). The correlation of carbohydrates, protein, and fat with some serum biochemical parameters in school-going children showed that serum Fe was significantly linked with proteins (r = 0.255; p < .0.05).
CONCLUSION
Our findings showed a concurrent shortage of macro and micronutrients. The current study also revealed that total energy intake was lower than the RDA and significant Fe, Zn, and Se deficiencies. The findings highlight the importance of measures aimed at improving children's nutritional status.

IMPORTANCE
A major concern with weight loss is concomitant bone loss. Exercise and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) represent weight loss strategies that may protect bone mass despite weight loss.
OBJECTIVE
To investigate bone health at clinically relevant sites (hip, spine, and forearm) after diet-induced weight loss followed by a 1-year intervention with exercise, liraglutide, or both combined.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS
This study was a predefined secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial conducted between August 2016 and November 2019 at the University of Copenhagen and Hvidovre Hospital in Denmark. Eligible participants included adults aged 18 to 65 years with obesity (body mass index of 32-43) and without diabetes. Data analysis was conducted from March to April 2023, with additional analysis in February 2024 during revision.
INTERVENTIONS
After an 8-week low-calorie diet (800 kcal/day), participants were randomized to 1 of 4 groups for 52 weeks: a moderate- to vigorous-intensity exercise program (exercise alone), 3.0 mg daily of the GLP-1 RA liraglutide (liraglutide alone), the combination, or placebo.
MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES
The primary outcome was change in site-specific bone mineral density (BMD) at the hip, lumbar spine, and distal forearm from before the low-calorie diet to the end of treatment, measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry in the intention-to-treat population.
RESULTS
In total, 195 participants (mean [SD] age, 42.84 [11.87] years; 124 female [64%] and 71 male [36%]; mean [SD] BMI, 37.00 [2.92]) were randomized, with 48 participants in the exercise group, 49 participants in the liraglutide group, 49 participants in the combination group, and 49 participants in the placebo group. The total estimated mean change in weight losses during the study was 7.03 kg (95% CI, 4.25-9.80 kg) in the placebo group, 11.19 kg (95% CI, 8.40-13.99 kg) in the exercise group, 13.74 kg (95% CI, 11.04-16.44 kg) in the liraglutide group, and 16.88 kg (95% CI, 14.23-19.54 kg) in the combination group. In the combination group, BMD was unchanged compared with the placebo group at the hip (mean change, -0.006 g/cm2; 95% CI, -0.017 to 0.004 g/cm2; P = .24) and lumbar spine (-0.010 g/cm2; 95% CI, -0.025 to 0.005 g/cm2; P = .20). Compared with the exercise group, BMD decreased for the liraglutide group at the hip (mean change, -0.013 g/cm2; 95% CI, -0.024 to -0.001 g/cm2; P = .03) and spine (mean change, -0.016 g/cm2; 95% CI, -0.032 to -0.001 g/cm2; P = .04).
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE
In this randomized clinical trial, the combination of exercise and GLP-1RA (liraglutide) was the most effective weight loss strategy while preserving bone health. Liraglutide treatment alone reduced BMD at clinically relevant sites more than exercise alone despite similar weight loss.

L. is a flowering succulent halophyte in the ice plant family Aizoaceae. There are various ecotypes distributed in sandy coastlines and salty marshlands in tropical and subtropical regions with the common name of sea purslane. These plants are tolerant to salt, drought, and flooding stresses and have been used for the stabilization of sand dunes and the restoration of coastal areas. With the increased salinization of agricultural soils and the widespread pollution of toxic metals in the environment, as well as excessive nutrients in waterbodies, has been explored for the desalination of saline soils and the phytoremediation of metals from contaminated soils and nitrogen and phosphorus from eutrophic water. In addition, sea purslane has nutraceutical and pharmaceutical value. Tissue analysis indicates that many ecotypes are rich in carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and mineral nutrients. Native Americans in Florida eat it raw, pickled, or cooked. In the Philippines, it is known as atchara after being pickled. contains high levels of ecdysteroids, which possess antidiabetic, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory activities in mammals. In this review article, we present the botanical information, the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying the tolerance of sea purslane to different stresses, its nutritional and pharmaceutical value, and the methods for its propagation and production in saline soils and waterbodies. Its adaptability to a wide range of stressful environments and its role in the production of valuable bioactive compounds suggest that can be produced in saline soils as a leafy vegetable and is a valuable genetic resource that can be used for the bioremediation of soil salinity and eutrophic water.

Gukang Capsule has been used as a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for the treatment of primary osteoporosis (POP) in China. The primary aim of this study was to assess the clinical effectiveness and safety of Gukang Capsule in POP patients. A systematic search was conducted across multiple academic databases including PubMed, Web of science, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chongqing VIP Information, and Wanfang database to identify randomized controlled trials investigating the Gukang Capsule in the treatment of POP. The screening process, data extraction, and assessment of methodological quality were conducted independently by two reviewers. Statistical analysis was performed using the Rev Man 5.3 software. Subgroup analysis was carried out through the combination of OPF. Subgroup analysis was performed according to whether OPF were combined. Stata 12.0 was used for sensitivity and bias analysis. Nineteen studies were assessed that included 1804 participants. It was found that compared with the control group, the total effective rate (RR = 1.26, 95% CI, 1.20, 1.33), the Medical Outcomes Study Short-form 36 [RR = 1.26, 95% CI(1.20, 1.33)], the bone mineral density (BMD) of lumbar vertebra (SMD = 0.77, 95% CI, 0.48, 1.07), the BMD of femoral neck [SMD = 0.84, 95% CI(0.53, 1.14)], and the BMD of Ward's triangle (SMD = 0.64, 95% CI, 0.44, 0.85) of the Gukang Capsule experimental group were higher. Compared with the control group, the fracture healing time (SMD = -2.14, 95% CI, -2.45, -1.84), the bone specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP) levels in serum (SMD = -2.00, 95% CI, -2.83, -1.17), the tartrate resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRACP-5b) levels in serum (SMD = -2.58, 95% CI, -3.87, -1.29) of the Gukang Capsule experimental group were lower. The bone glaprotein (BGP) levels in serum (SMD = -0.22, 95% CI, -1.86, 1.43) and the adverse events (RR = 0.80, 95% CI, 0.40, 1.63) of the experimental group and the control group have no difference. BACKGROUND
Low energy availability (LEA) causes pathophysiology of the female athlete's body affecting the bone and reproductive health and was observed to have a high prevalence in recreational female athletes previously. The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between low energy availability in females questionnaire (LEAF-Q), bone mineral density (BMD), and postural stability in recreational athletes.
METHODS
Recreational female athletes ( = 24, age: 23.71 ± 2.94, Tier I) completed LEAF-Q, postural stability measurement during quiet stance (Zebris platform FDM; GmbH) and their BMD was measured using DXA (Hologic QDR Horizon A). Non-parametric statistical tests were used to analyse the relationships between LEAF-Q, BMD, and postural stability and to compare differences between participants divided by the LEAF-Q score and its subscales.
RESULTS
Risk of LEA was observed in 50% of recreational athletes participating in this study. Up to 46% of participants perceived menstrual bleeding changes related to training and 37.50% experienced menstrual dysfunction. Body composition and body weight fluctuations were observed to affect postural stability and BMD. With the risk score for LEA, the BMD and postural stability were not negatively affected in recreational athletes. However, the high number of recreational athletes in the risk score for LEA and menstrual dysfunctions highlights the need for public health programs aimed to increase awareness of LEA and its health consequences and for open communication about the menstrual cycle. Future longitudinal studies observing LEA, BMD, menstrual function, postural stability, and their interrelationship in female athletes are needed to increase the knowledge of this topic.

BACKGROUND
Osteoporosis is significantly associated with fractures and burdens the health of especially older people. Osteoporotic fractures cause pain, disability, and increased mortality. Early diagnosis of osteoporosis allows earlier initiation of treatment, thereby reducing the risk of osteoporotic fractures. Chiropractors encounter potential osteoporotic patients daily, and perform radiological evaluation of these and other patients, including evaluation of X-rays done for other purposes than osteoporosis. Therefore, chiropractors may identify vertebral fractures, vertebral deformity or osteopenia not otherwise suspected or recorded.
METHODS
This study examines procedures available to the chiropractor to describe conventional X-rays with the focus of osteoporosis related findings. We review the indications for radiological examination in chiropractic practice, and in the realm of osteoporosis we describe radiological methods available for examination of conventional radiographs, and the necessity of inter-disciplinary communication.
RESULTS
National guidelines are available regarding referral for X-rays in chiropractic practice. Standardized protocols ensure image acquisition of the highest quality in the chiropractors' radiological department. Conventional X-ray examination is not indicated on clinical suspicion of osteoporosis alone, as bone mineral density testing is the diagnostic test. Radiological assessment of all available X-rays of patients above the age of 50 years should include evaluation of the bone quality, and hip and vertebral fracture assessment. The Singh index, Genant Semi-Quantitative tool (GSQ), and Algorithm-Based Qualitative method (ABQ) should be used consistently during interpretation. Referral for additional imaging and evaluation should be prompt and systematic when needed.
CONCLUSIONS
This article presents an overview of evidence-based radiological procedures for the purpose of promoting early diagnosis of osteoporosis. We present recommendations to the clinicians where we propose an opportunistic evaluation of X-rays, done for any reason, which include systematic evaluation of bone quality, presence of hip and vertebral fractures, and vertebral deformation of all patients above the age of 50 years. Detailed referral to healthcare professionals for further diagnostic evaluation is performed when needed. Consistent, high-quality radiological procedures in chiropractic practices could feasibly contribute to the timely diagnosis of osteoporosis, ultimately minimizing the impact of osteoporosis-related complications on patients' health.
