BACKGROUND
This study investigates the relationship between professional and recreational singing on temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) in women compared to a nonsinging control group.
METHODS
A total of 288 female subjects between the ages of 18 and 45 participated in the self-assessment questionnaire including demographic data, as well as questions on vocal practice and TMDs symptoms. Depending on the singing time per week, the (non)vocalists were assigned to the groups professional (n = 96), recreational (n = 96) and nonsingers (n = 96).
RESULTS
The TMDs prevalence in professional singers (42%) was higher than that in recreational singers (31%) and noticeably higher than that in nonsingers (25%). The Fisher-Freeman-Halton exact test showed that the differences between the groups were not noticeable (p = .053) but could be formulated as tendencies. The professionals suffered much more from restricted jaw movement (p = .004; OR = 2.718; 95% CI = 1.409-5.242), temporomandibular joint sounds (p < .009; OR = 2.267; 95% CI = 1.264-4.064) and temporomandibular pain (p = .010; OR = 2.333; 95% CI = 1.264-4.308) than nonsingers.
CONCLUSIONS
Singing might have an enhancing effect on the appearance of TMDs. In particular, professional singers suffered more from self-reported TMDs than recreational singers and nonsingers. In addition to the high level of physical workload if participating in professional singing, the psychosocial impact should be investigated more in further studies. No new treatment strategies resulted from this study, as the etiological significance of singing is still unclear. Knowledge about risk factors for multifactorial TMDs can help practitioners and patients prevent and treat TMDs.

Cherubism is an uncommon, multilocular cystic condition of the jaws. This autosomal dominant, nonneoplastic, fibro-osseous condition of the jaws affects children and is self-limiting. Clinically, it shows up as an expansion or distortion of the jaw together with an unnatural teeth alignment. In their most severe forms, these deformations might cause phonation difficulties, decreased pharynx lumen, visual issues, and psychological effects. This case report describes a case report of two siblings involving the maxilla and the mandible presenting with a painless bilateral symmetrical enlargement. Cherubism is a hereditary condition characterized by nonneoplastic bone lesions that damage the jaws. Surgery should be used to resolve any functional or aesthetically problematic issues. Typically, the surgical procedure is postponed until after puberty.

INTRODUCTION
Many transsexual women seek to feminise their voice through pitch elevation surgeries so that it becomes congruent with their gender identity. This study aims to determine the safety and effectiveness of Wendler glottoplasty (WG) in vocal feminisation through the assessment of acoustic and aerodynamic parameters of the voice, as well as voice-related quality of life (QoL) in male-to-female transsexuals.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of transsexual women who underwent WG for voice feminisation at our institution between 2016 and 2023. All acoustic and aerodynamic analyses, a voice self-assessment, and a videolaryngostroboscopic evaluation were performed in the immediate preoperative period and at the follow-up visit 6 weeks after the procedure.
RESULTS
A total of 11 patients with a mean age of 32.73 years were included. After WG, there was a significant fundamental frequency and speaking fundamental frequency increase of 109.64 Hz and 83.48 Hz, respectively (p < 0.001), representing an average rise by 9.71 semitones and 8.36 semitones (STs), respectively. No significant differences were found between the mean pre- and postoperative values of fundamental frequencies, frequency range, upper limit of the frequency range of spoken voice, and maximum phonation time. Contrarily, the mean lower limit of frequency range rose by 75.56 Hz (p < 0.001), representing an average increase of 10.56 STs. None of the assessed spirometric parameters changed significantly after WG (p > 0.05). The mean overall Voice Handicap Index (VHI) and Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) scores significantly improved after the surgery, decreasing by 24.54 points (p = 0.008) and 11.5 points (p = 0.001), respectively. A significant improvement was observed in the functional and emotional domains of VHI. Additionally, significantly fewer patients considered the overall quality of their voice to be "poor" after WG.
CONCLUSIONS
WG constitutes an effective method of surgical voice feminisation in male-to-female transsexuals with concurrent improvement in their voice-related QoL. Furthermore, it remains a safe procedure without persistent complications and negative influence on the acoustic-aerodynamic measures of the voice.

In recent years, there has been a notable rise in the number of patients afflicted with laryngeal diseases, including cancer, trauma, and other ailments leading to voice loss. Currently, the market is witnessing a pressing demand for medical and healthcare products designed to assist individuals with voice defects, prompting the invention of the artificial throat (AT). This user-friendly device eliminates the need for complex procedures like phonation reconstruction surgery. Therefore, in this review, we will initially give a careful introduction to the intelligent AT, which can act not only as a sound sensor but also as a thin-film sound emitter. Then, the sensing principle to detect sound will be discussed carefully, including capacitive, piezoelectric, electromagnetic, and piezoresistive components employed in the realm of sound sensing. Following this, the development of thermoacoustic theory and different materials made of sound emitters will also be analyzed. After that, various algorithms utilized by the intelligent AT for speech pattern recognition will be reviewed, including some classical algorithms and neural network algorithms. Finally, the outlook, challenge, and conclusion of the intelligent AT will be stated. The intelligent AT presents clear advantages for patients with voice impairments, demonstrating significant social values.

Achieving flexible electronics with comfort and durability comparable to traditional textiles is one of the ultimate pursuits of smart wearables. Ink printing is desirable for e-textile development using a simple and inexpensive process. However, fabricating high-performance atop textiles with good dispersity, stability, biocompatibility, and wearability for high-resolution, large-scale manufacturing, and practical applications has remained challenging. Here, water-based multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-decorated liquid metal (LM) inks are proposed with carbonaceous gallium-indium micro-nanostructure. With the assistance of biopolymers, the sodium alginate-encapsulated LM droplets contain high carboxyl groups which non-covalently crosslink with silk sericin-mediated MWCNTs. E-textile can be prepared subsequently via printing technique and natural waterproof triboelectric coating, enabling good flexibility, hydrophilicity, breathability, wearability, biocompatibility, conductivity, stability, and excellent versatility, without any artificial chemicals. The obtained e-textile can be used in various applications with designable patterns and circuits. Multi-sensing applications of recognizing complex human motions, breathing, phonation, and pressure distribution are demonstrated with repeatable and reliable signals. Self-powered and energy-harvesting capabilities are also presented by driving electronic devices and lighting LEDs. As proof of concept, this work provides new opportunities in a scalable and sustainable way to develop novel wearable electronics and smart clothing for future commercial applications.

Speech rate reduction is a global speech therapy approach for speech deficits in Parkinson's disease (PD) that has the potential to result in changes across multiple speech subsystems. While the overall goal of rate reduction is usually improvements in speech intelligibility, not all people with PD benefit from this approach. Speech rate is often targeted as a means of improving articulatory precision, though less is known about rate-induced changes in other speech subsystems that could help or hinder communication. The purpose of this study was to quantify phonatory changes associated with speech rate modification across a broad range of speech rates from very slow to very fast in talkers with and without PD. Four speaker groups participated: younger and older healthy controls, and people with PD with and without deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS). Talkers read aloud standardized sentences at 7 speech rates elicited using magnitude production: habitual, three slower rates, and three faster rates. Acoustic measures of speech intensity, cepstral peak prominence, and fundamental frequency were measured as a function of speech rate and group. Overall, slower rates of speech were associated with differential effects on phonation across the four groups. While all talkers spoke at a lower pitch in slow speech, younger talkers showed increases in speech intensity and cepstral peak prominence, while talkers with PD and STN-DBS showed the reverse pattern. Talkers with PD without STN-DBS and older healthy controls behaved in between these two extremes. At faster rates, all groups uniformly demonstrated increases in cepstral peak prominence. While speech rate reductions are intended to promote positive changes in articulation to compensate for speech deficits in dysarthria, the present results highlight that undesirable changes may be invoked across other subsystems, such as at the laryngeal level. In particular, talkers with STN-DBS, who often demonstrate speech deterioration following DBS surgery, demonstrated more phonatory detriments at slowed speech rates. Findings have implications for speech rate candidacy considerations and speech motor control processes in PD.

Vocal fold (VF) vibrations are the primary source of human phonation. High-speed video (HSV) endoscopy enables the computation of descriptive VF parameters for assessment of physiological properties of laryngeal dynamics, i.e., the vibration of the VFs. However, underlying biomechanical factors responsible for physiological and disordered VF vibrations cannot be accessed. In contrast, physically based numerical VF models reveal insights into the organ's oscillations, which remain inaccessible through endoscopy. To estimate biomechanical properties, previous research has fitted subglottal pressure-driven mass-spring-damper systems, as inverse problem to the HSV-recorded VF trajectories, by global optimization of the numerical model. A neural network trained on the numerical model may be used as a substitute for computationally expensive optimization, yielding a fast evaluating surrogate of the biomechanical inverse problem. This paper proposes a convolutional recurrent neural network (CRNN)-based architecture trained on regression of a physiological-based biomechanical six-mass model (6 MM). To compare with previous research, the underlying biomechanical factor "subglottal pressure" prediction was tested against 288 HSV porcine recordings. The contributions of this work are two-fold: first, the presented CRNN with the 6 MM handles multiple trajectories along the VFs, which allows for investigations on local changes in VF characteristics. Second, the network was trained to reproduce further important biomechanical model parameters like VF mass and stiffness on synthetic data. Unlike in a previous work, the network in this study is therefore an entire surrogate of the inverse problem, which allowed for explicit computation of the fitted model using our approach. The presented approach achieves a best-case mean absolute error (MAE) of 133 Pa (13.9%) in subglottal pressure prediction with 76.6% correlation on experimental data and a re-estimated fundamental frequency MAE of 15.9 Hz (9.9%). In-detail training analysis revealed subglottal pressure as the most learnable parameter. With the physiological-based model design and advances in fast parameter prediction, this work is a next step in biomechanical VF model fitting and the estimation of laryngeal kinematics.

BACKGROUND
Rehabilitation of the anterior area when the mesio-distal space is reduced is a challenge for the clinician, due to the patient's anatomical limitations and aesthetic requirements. Narrow Diameter Implants (NDI) are an option of treatment when the standard diameter implant is not possible, but the evidence is scarce. This prospective clinical study aims to analyze the formation of the tooth-implant papilla between the implant and the adjacent natural tooth in the maxillary lateral incisors and mandibular incisors.
METHODS
A total of 40 patients treated with NDI, of titanium-zirconium (Ti-Zr) alloy i.e., 2.9 mm Test Group (TG) and 3.3 mm Control Group (CG), were included. The mesiodistal distance between the adjacent natural teeth was used for implant selection, maintaining 1.5 mm between the fixation and the adjacent tooth. Clinical assessment was performed by a clinical examiner at 6 and 12 months after the final prosthesis. The primary variable was the Jemt Papillary Index. Also, implant survival rate (SR), complications, Implant Stability Quotient (ISQ), and patient-reported outcomes measures (PROMs) such as aesthetics, chewing, phonation, comfort, and self-esteem were analyzed.
RESULTS
A significant amount of papilla filling was observed concerning the baseline, with a trend towards more formation of the papilla in the TG, with a JPI score of 3. No significant differences were observed between the two groups regarding implant SR, clinical parameters, and complications. In terms of PROMs, a higher satisfaction in the TG was observed, with significant intergroup differences for aesthetics, comfort, self-esteem, and primary stability ISQ (TG: 59.05 (SD: 5.4) vs. CG: 51.55 (SD: 5.7)).
CONCLUSIONS
The 2.9 mm diameter Ti-Zr implants achieved a formation of papilla similar to 3.3 mm implants in the anterior region at 12 months of follow-up after the final prosthetic restoration. The use of Ti-Zr implants with a diameter of 2.9 mm to rehabilitate single teeth in areas of the anterior region, where the mesiodistal distance is limited, showed favorable clinical results and a high degree of satisfaction during 1 year of observation similar to 3.3 mm dental implants.

This study was retrospectively registered in ClinicalTrials.gov with the number NCT05642520, dated 18/11/2022.

Several studies have been conducted that show the crucial role of active participation in music in health promotion (e.g. Dingle et al., 2021; Sheppard & Broughton, 2020); however, little research has focused on the biopsychosocial effects of choral singing. The present study aims to evaluate the effectiveness, in terms of improving physiological and psychosocial factors, of a choral program for middle-aged and older individuals. We integrated our study with qualitative observations of the atmosphere and flow state experienced by the choristers. The data were collected before and after 12 weeks of training, with 23 participants took part in the study. They experienced significant improvements in weight, oxygen saturation, heart rate, and satisfaction of psychological needs. A beneficial trend, although not statistically significant, were observed for blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, stress, psychological needs, and mental health. The observations progressively revealed a more cohesive and focused group. Our findings support the potential for cross-disciplinary collaboration between healthcare and arts policy to promote and enhance health and well-being throughout the lifespan.

Abductor laryngeal dystonia (ABLD) is a rare neurological voice disorder which results in sporadic opening of the vocal folds during speech. Etiology is unknown, and to date there is no identified effective behavioral treatment for it. It is hypothesized that LSVT LOUD®, which was developed to treat dysphonia secondary to Parkinson's disease, may have application to speakers with ABLD to improve outcomes beyond that with botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) treatment alone. The participant received one injection of BoNT in each vocal fold 2 to 3 months prior to initiating intensive voice therapy via teletherapy. Objective measures of vocal loudness (dB sound pressure level), maximum phonation time, and high/low pitch frequency (Hz) were recorded in all treatment sessions and follow-up sessions. Over the course of treatment, the participant showed steady gains in phonation time, volume, pitch range, and vocal quality with a substantial reduction in aphonic voice breaks by the end of the treatment program. Perceptual symptoms of ABLD were nearly undetectable by the participant and the clinicians up to 12 months posttreatment, with no additional BoNT injections. The results suggest that LSVT LOUD® following BoNT was effective, with long-lasting improvement in vocal function, for this speaker with ABLD.
