The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of the direct-fed microbial 10-G upon cattle growth performance, liver and lung health, carcass quality, and yield outcomes, as well as prevalence and enumeration of in feces and lymph nodes. Fed beef heifers ( = 1,400; initial shrunk body weight [] 343.3 ± 36.2 kg) were blocked by the day of arrival and randomly allocated to one of two treatments (0 [negative control, CON] or 2 g of a direct-fed microbial [10-G] that provided 1 billion CFUs per animal per day of , , , , and ) with 10 pens per treatment. Recto-anal mucosal fecal samples (; = 477) and subiliac lymph nodes (; = 479) were collected longitudinally at harvest from 23 to 25 heifers per pen. Data were analyzed using mixed models; pen served as the experimental unit; block and harvest date were random effects. No differences were detected in dry matter intake ( = 0.78), final BW ( = 0.64), average daily gain ( = 0.51), gain to feed ( = 0.71), hot carcass weight ( = 0.54), dressed carcass yield ( = 0.52), 12th rib fat depth ( = 0.13), longissimus muscle area ( = 0.62), calculated empty body fat ( = 0.26), or marbling score ( = 0.82). Distributions of liver scores ( ≥ 0.34), quality grades ( ≥ 0.23), and yield grades ( ≥ 0.11) were also not different between treatments. A tendency was detected for more normal lungs ( = 0.08; 10-G = 65.96%, CON = 61.12%) and fewer inflated lungs at harvest for cattle fed 10-G ( = 0.10; 10-G = 0.29%, CON = 1.16%); other lung outcomes did not differ ( ≥ 0.54). prevalence did not differ for RAM samples ( = 0.41; 10-G = 97.74%, CON = 96.82%) or SLN ( = 0.22; 10-G = 17.92%, CON = 13.66%). concentration of RAM samples ( = 0.25; 10-G = 3.87 log CFU/g, CON = 3.32 log CFU/g) or SLN ( = 0.37; 10-G = 1.46 log CFU/g, CON = 1.14 log CFU/g) also did not differ between treatments at harvest. These results do not demonstrate any difference in live animal performance, carcass characteristics, or carriage for heifers fed 10-G.

INTRODUCTION
Traumatic rib fractures present a considerable risk to patient well-being, contributing to morbidity and mortality in trauma patients. To address the risks associated with rib fractures, evidence-based interventions have been implemented, including effective pain management, pulmonary hygiene, and early walking. Vancouver General Hospital, a level 1 trauma center in British Columbia, Canada, developed a comprehensive multidisciplinary chest trauma clinical practice guideline (CTCPG) to optimize the management of patients with rib fractures. This prospective cohort study aimed to assess the impact of the CTCPG on pain management interventions and patient outcomes.
METHODS
The study involved patients admitted between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2021 (post-CTCPG cohort) and a historical control group admitted between November 1, 2018 and December 31, 2019 (pre-CTCPG cohort). Patient data were collected from patient charts and the British Columbia Trauma Registry, including demographics, injury characteristics, pain management interventions, and relevant outcomes.
RESULTS
Implementation of the CTCPG resulted in an increased use of multimodal pain therapy (99.4% vs 96.1%; p=0.03) and a significant reduction in the incidence of delirium in the post-CTCPG cohort (OR 0.43, 95% CI 0.21 to 0.80, p=0.0099). There were no significant differences in hospital length of stay, ICU (intensive care unit) days, non-invasive positive pressure ventilation requirement, ventilator days, pneumonia incidence, or mortality between the two cohorts.
DISCUSSION
Adoption of a CTCPG improved chest trauma management by enhancing pain management and reducing the incidence of delirium. Further research, including multicenter studies, is warranted to validate these findings and explore additional potential benefits of the CTCPG in the management of chest trauma patients.

Due to the high cost, low-performance lasers and detectors in the mid-infrared (MIR) band, the development of MIR-integrated devices is very slow. Here, we demonstrate an effective method to characterize the parameters of MIR devices by using frequency conversion technology. We designed and fabricated rib waveguides and the micro-ring resonators (MRRs) on a silicon-on-sapphire platform. The MIR laser for the test is generated by difference frequency generation, and the transmission spectrum of the MIR-MRRs is detected by sum frequency generation. The experimental results show that the waveguide transmission loss is 4.5 dB/cm and the quality factor of the micro-ring reaches 38000, which is in good agreement with the numerical simulations. This work provides a useful method to characterize MIR integrated devices based on the frequency conversion technique, which can boost the development of MIR integrated optics in the future.

BACKGROUND
Carcass traits are essential economic traits in the commercial pig industry. However, the genetic mechanism of carcass traits is still unclear. In this study, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) based on the specific-locus amplified fragment sequencing (SLAF-seq) to study seven carcass traits on 223 four-way intercross pigs, including dressing percentage (DP), number of ribs (RIB), skin thinkness (ST), carcass straight length (CSL), carcass diagonal length (CDL), loin eye width (LEW), and loin eye thickness (LET).
RESULTS
A total of 227,921 high-quality single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were detected to perform GWAS. A total of 30 SNPs were identified for seven carcass traits using the mixed linear model (MLM) (p < 1.0 × 10), of which 9 SNPs were located in previously reported quantitative trait loci (QTL) regions. The phenotypic variation explained (PVE) by the significant SNPs was from 2.43 to 16.32%. Furthermore, 11 candidate genes (LYPLAL1, EPC1, MATN2, ZFAT, ZBTB10, ZNF704, INHBA, SMYD3, PAK1, SPTBN2, and ACTN3) were found for carcass traits in pigs.
CONCLUSIONS
The GWAS results will improve our understanding of the genetic basis of carcass traits. We hypothesized that the candidate genes associated with these discovered SNPs would offer a biological basis for enhancing the carcass quality of pigs in swine breeding.

PURPOSE
This study aims to examine predisposing anatomic factors and subsequent post-decompression functional outcomes among high-intensity athletes with thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS).
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A single-institution retrospective review was performed on a prospective database of patients with TOS from 2018 to 2023 who had undergone operative decompression for TOS. Demographics, TOS characteristics, predisposing anatomy, operative details, and postoperative outcomes were examined. The primary outcome was postoperative return to sport. Secondary outcomes included vascular patency.
RESULTS
A total of 13 patients who were engaged in high-demand athletic activity at the time of their diagnosis were included. Diagnoses included 8 (62%) patients with venous TOS, 4 (31%) patients with neurogenic TOS, and 1 (8%) patient with arterial TOS. Mixed vascular and neurogenic TOS was observed in 3 (23%) patients. The mean age of the cohort was 30 years. Abnormal scalene structure was observed in 12 (92%) patients, and abnormal bone structures were noted in 4 (27%) patients; 2 (15%) with cervical ribs and 3 (23%) patients with clavicular abnormalities. Prior ipsilateral upper extremity trauma was reported in 4 (27%) patients. Significant joint hypermobility was observed in 8 (62%) patients with a median Beighton score of 6. Supraclavicular cervical and/or first rib resection with scalenectomy was performed in all patients. One case of postoperative pneumothorax was treated non-operatively. Ten (77%) patients returned to sport. Duplex ultrasonography showed subclavian vein patency in all 8 patients with venous TOS and wide patency with no drop in perfusion indices in the patient with arterial TOS.
CONCLUSION
Athletes with TOS who required operative intervention had a high incidence of musculoskeletal aberrations and joint hypermobility. Supraclavicular decompression was associated with a high success rate, with overall good functional outcomes and good likelihood of patients returning to preoperative high-intensity athletics.

This comprehensive review aims to delineate the prevailing non-cardiac thoracic injuries occurring in urban environments following initial on-site treatment and subsequent admission to hospital emergency departments. Our study involved a rigorous search within the PubMed database, employing key phrases and their combinations, including "thoracic injury," "thoracic trauma," "haemothorax," "lung contusion," "traumatic pneumothorax," "rib fractures," and "flail chest." We focused on original research articles and reviews. Non-cardiac thoracic injuries exhibit a high prevalence, often affecting poly-trauma patients, and contributing to up to 35% of polytrauma-related fatalities. Furthermore, severe thoracic injuries can result in a substantial 5% mortality rate. This review provides insights into clinical entities such as lung contusion, traumatic haemothorax, pneumothorax, rib fractures, and sternal fractures. Thoracic injuries represent a frequent and significant clinical concern for emergency department physicians and thoracic surgeons, warranting thorough understanding and timely intervention.

The value of precise dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) cut weight predictions to lamb allocation to cut plans is unknown. Lambs (n = 191) varying in carcase weight (HSCW) and GR (tissue depth over the 12th rib) were DEXA scanned and boned out to weigh retail cuts. Cut weights were predicted using HSCW; HSCW + GR; HSCW + DEXA and HSCW + DEXA image components in GLM models. DEXA improved cut weight predictions in most cuts (P < 0.05). A dataset of 10,000 carcases was then simulated using the associations between HSCW, GR and cut weights, before being truncated to 4500 lambs representing onel day's HSCW distribution. A lamb Carcase Optimisation Tool scenario was developed with 2-3 cut options per carcase section and cut weight thresholds applied to several cuts. Processing costs, market values and actual cut weights were input into the Optimiser to determine carcase allocation to cut options for optimised profits. This scenario was repeated using the predicted cut weights to determine the cut misallocations caused. DEXA-predicted cut weights produced 16.7% and 8.0% less misallocations than HSCW and GR. DEXA produced 20.8% and 14.3% less misallocations than HSCW and GR in shortloins, and 25.5% and 12.9% less in hindquarters. While cut misallocations have little direct impact on total profits, as product is over and under-valued when misallocated, reducing cut misallocations will improve processor compliance when sorting carcases into cut plans- reducing their need to retrim, downgrade and repackage product or the erosion of customer confidence caused by supplying product not meeting market specifications.

BACKGROUND
The technological innovation of fast kilovoltage (KV)-switching dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) has enabled the accurate measurement of vertebral bone density; however, it does not account for the effects of abdominal fat and ribs on the vertebral body. In our study, a European spine phantom (ESP) was used to establish an abdominal phantom for normal weight and obese people, and to explore the best scanning parameters for DECT to measure the bone mineral density (BMD) of the human lumbar spine.
METHODS
Revolution CT was used to conduct energy spectrum scanning for each body mode. A total of 20 sets of energy spectrum scans was conducted and each set of conditions was scanned 10 times. The data conformed to a normal distribution, and the differences between the measured and actual values of ESP L1-3 vertebrae were compared using a one-sample -test, and quantitative data were described by . A P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Relative error (RE) and root mean square error (RMSE) of BMD measurements were calculated for different scanning conditions in normal and obese populations.
RESULTS
When simulating the upper abdominal condition (L1-2 level, fat area 140 cm, with rib influence) in a normal weight population, there was no statistical difference (P>0.05) in BMD measurements for each vertebra at 0.8 s/rotation (rot) with different tube currents, the smallest RE at 0.8 s/rot, 190 mA condition, and the smallest RMSE for L1 and 2 vertebral BMD measurements at 190 mA; when simulating the abdominal condition at the L4 level in a normal weight population (fat area of 240 cm, no rib influence), there were no statistical differences between the measurements at 0.8 s/rot, 190 and 275 mA conditions (P>0.05), and the RE and RMSE in the 190 mA condition was smaller than that in the 275 mA condition. Simulating the upper abdominal condition in the obese population (L1-2 level, fat area 340 cm, with rib influence), there were no statistical difference between the measurements in the 0.8 s/rot, 315 and 355 mA conditions (P>0.05), the RE and RMSE in the 315 mA condition was less than those in the 355 mA; simulated obese abdominal condition at the L4 level in the population (fat area 450 cm, no rib influence) resulted in 0.8 s/rot, no statistical difference in measurements between 315 mA (P>0.05), RE in 315 mA conditions were L1: 3.75%, L2: -1.06%, L3: 0.42%, and the RMSE under 315 mA condition were L1: 2.13, L2: 1.21, L3: 1.66.
CONCLUSIONS
When using Revolution CT to measure lumbar spine bone density, 0.8 s/rot at 190 mA may be the best scanning parameter for a normal weight population, and 0.8 s/rot at 315 mA may be the best scanning parameter for an obese population.

BACKGROUND
Bilateral first rib fractures are rare. This article presented the diagnosis and treatment of a case of bilateral first rib fractures with multi-organ complications and discussed the injury mechanism.
CASE PRESENTATION
A 15-year-old girl fell off a motorcycle. She complained of right neck root pain and right upper limb weakness. The myodynamia of the right upper limb was grade 0, and the sensation disappeared below the level of the elbow joint. The computed tomography (CT) showed bilateral first rib fractures and transverse process fracture of the 6th cervical vertebra. Chest CT revealed a massive hemothorax in the right thoracic cavity, and head magnetic resonance imaging showed bilateral cerebellar infarction. Cervical computed tomography angiography (CTA) revealed a lumen occlusion at the origin of the right subclavian artery. The patient underwent an emergency thoracoscopy, and a re-examination of chest CT indicated that no obvious pleural effusion was found after the hemothorax was cleared. The patient underwent right subclavian arteriography and interventional endovascular thrombolysis, and the right subclavicular artery was patency postoperative. Bilateral first rib fractures and cerebellar infarction were treated conservatively. The brachial plexus injury did not show any signs of recovery after conservative treatment, and she was recommended to be transferred to a superior hospital for surgical treatment.
CONCLUSIONS
The injury mechanism of bilateral first rib fractures with multi-organ complications was closely related to the initial factor of the right neck root colliding with a bulge on the ground. We believe that the fractures occur as a result of a combination including a high energy trauma from direct impact and a low-energy mechanism from violent muscle contraction caused by neck hyperextension. This case report was helpful for clinicians to understand bilateral first rib fractures and their complications.

Ewing sarcoma is one of the small round blue cell tumors of childhood that typically affects bone. Recently, a subgroup of undifferentiated round-cell sarcomas has been genetically identified as BCOR (B-cell Line 6 Corepressor)-altered sarcomas (BAS). We present a case of a six-year-old male child who presented with a chief complaint of shortness of breath and tachypnea and was found to have a large mediastinal mass concerning sarcoma. Preliminary biopsy results were positive for small round blue cells, possibly Ewing sarcoma. After six cycles of chemotherapy, with subsequent shrinkage of mediastinal mass, the patient was able to undergo wedge resection and excision of the mass with en bloc resection of the fifth and sixth rib, preserving his right lung. Final tissue pathology was positive for BAS. There have been only four reported cases of BAS of the chest wall and zero reported cases of primary tumor presentation of the lung, making this a rare presentation of the disease.
