Heat-related illness commonly affects adolescent patients, especially as summer approaches and global temperature extremes worsen. Basic counseling on sunburn prevention can decrease the risk for future malignancies, and rapidly preventing, identifying, and treating heat stroke can prevent severe morbidity and mortality. This article will review the epidemiology of exertional heat-related illness and the variations in presentations and pathology, from heat rash and sunburn to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. By the end of this review clinicians should be able to identify and treat different heat-related illnesses in adolescents and potentially save a life. .

Vitiligo is a common acquired disease of pigment loss. In lesions recalcitrant to non-invasive treatment, transplantation of cultured autologous melanocytes is an emerging choice. Conventionally, the recipient site is often prepared by laser-mediated or mechanical dermabrasion. Such preparation procedures have disadvantages including prolonged transplantation duration, long period for reepithelialization and potential scarring. We propose a method of preparing recipient sites by psoralen and controlled ultraviolet A (PUVA)-induced blistering followed by transplanting suspended melanocytes. We introduced this method in 10 patients with segmental vitiligo on their recipient site 3 to 5 days before transplantation and blistering developed in 2 to 3 days afterwards. On the day of transplantation, the blister roof could be peeled off easily without bleeding and the recipient site preparation could be completed in 20 min. The recipient site became reepithelialized within 1 week. Progressive repigmentation was observed for up to 6 months, with an average of 65.06% repigmentation in the recipient site without scarring at the end of follow-up. Hence, preparation of the recipient site by controlled PUVA-induced sunburn-like blistering can potentially facilitate melanocyte transplantation and prevent scarring.

INTRODUCTION
Exposure to solar radiation can cause a range of skin damage, including sunburn, erythema, skin carcinogenesis, the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS), inflammation, DNA damage, and photoaging. Other wavelengths beyond UVB, such as UVA, blue light, and infrared radiation, can also contribute to the harmful effects of solar radiation. Reconstructed full-thickness human skin has the potential to serve as effective predictive in vitro tools for evaluating the effects of solar radiation on the skin. The aim of this work was to evaluate the damaging effects of UVA, blue light, and infrared radiation in a full-thickness skin model in terms of viability, inflammation, photoaging, tissue damage, photocarcinogenesis.
METHODS
Full thickness skin models were purchased from Henkel (Phenion FT; Düsseldorf, Germany), and irradiated with increasing doses of UVA, blue light, or infrared radiation. Different endpoints were analyzed on the tissues: Hematoxylin-eosin staining, inflammation mediators, photoaging-related dermal markers and oxidative stress marker GPX1, evaluated by real-time quantitative PCR, as well as photocarcinogenesis markers by Western Blot.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
The results showed differential responses in cytokine release for each light source. In terms of photoaging biomarkers, collagen, metalloproteinases 1 and 9, elastin, and decorin were modulated by UVA and blue light exposure, while not all these markers were affected by infrared radiation. Furthermore, exposure to UVA and blue light induced loss of fibroblasts and modulation of the photocarcinogenesis markers p53 and p21. In conclusion, the presented results suggest that the various wavelengths of solar light have distinct and differential damaging effects on the skin. Understanding the differential effects of UVA, blue light, and infrared radiation can serve as a valuable tool to investigate the efficacy of photoprotective agents in full thickness skin models.

Skin cancer, a malignant neoplasm originating from skin cell types including keratinocytes, melanocytes, and sweat glands, comprises three primary forms: basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and malignant melanoma (MM). BCC and SCC, while constituting the most prevalent categories of skin cancer, are generally considered less aggressive compared to MM. Notably, MM possesses a greater capacity for invasiveness, enabling infiltration into adjacent tissues and dissemination via both the circulatory and lymphatic systems. Risk factors associated with skin cancer encompass ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure, fair skin complexion, a history of sunburn incidents, genetic predisposition, immunosuppressive conditions, and exposure to environmental carcinogens. Early detection of skin cancer is of paramount importance to optimize treatment outcomes and preclude the progression of disease, either locally or to distant sites. In pursuit of this objective, numerous computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been developed. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI), distinguished by its capacity to capture information spanning the electromagnetic spectrum, surpasses conventional RGB imaging, which relies solely on three color channels. Consequently, this study offers a comprehensive exploration of recent CAD investigations pertaining to skin cancer detection and diagnosis utilizing HSI, emphasizing diagnostic performance parameters such as sensitivity and specificity.

BACKGROUND
Middle childhood (ages 8-12 years) is a critical period for forming behavioral habits and reducing the risk for the development of skin cancer later in life. During this time, children develop more autonomy and spend more unsupervised time away from their parents. Professional agencies recommend that all children engage in regular sun protection behaviors and avoid the sun during peak daytime hours. Unfortunately, in middle childhood, child sun protection often declines and UV radiation exposure increases. Effective parenting involves balancing ways to encourage the child's increasing independence while providing practical assistance to ensure sun protection is implemented.
OBJECTIVE
The goal was to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effects of Sun Safe Families, a Facebook group intervention for parents of children between 8 and 12 years of age.
METHODS
The team developed Facebook messages targeting parent knowledge, normative influences, sun safety barriers, planning and goal setting, confidence in implementing sun safety, communication, forming habits, and managing sun safety in risky situations. A total of 92 parents were enrolled, and the groups ran for 6 weeks. Feasibility was measured by enrollment and retention rates. Acceptability was measured by engagement in the Facebook groups. Satisfaction was assessed by a treatment evaluation. At pre- and post-intervention, parents completed measures of child sun protection, UV radiation exposure, sunburn, sun safety knowledge, child risk, barriers, sun protection self-efficacy, planning, sun safe habits, norms for child sun safety, and communication about sun safety.
RESULTS
Enrollment (64.3%, 92/143) and retention (94.6%, 87/92) were good. On average, participants viewed 67.6% (56.8/84) of posts, "liked" 16.4% (13.77/84) of posts, commented on 14.8% (12.43/84) of posts, and voted on 46% (6.4/14) of polls. Satisfaction was excellent. From pre- to post-intervention, there were significant increases in child sun protection, sun exposure, and sunburn (P<.01; moderate effect sizes), as well as statistically significant increases in planning and self-efficacy (P<.05) and family norms and parent communication (P<.01).
CONCLUSIONS
This study demonstrated high survey retention, acceptability, and satisfaction with the intervention. There were promising preliminary effects on child sun protection behaviors and parent sun protection attitudes and communication with their child. Replication with a larger sample size and a comparison condition is warranted.

Previous evidence has suggested that childhood sunburn could be a risk factor for cutaneous malignant melanoma (MM) and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). However, existing observational studies could not reveal the causal associations genetically. This study aimed to investigate whether there was a genetic causal relationship between childhood sunburn and skin cancers. Univariable Mendelian randomization (MR) and Causal Analysis Using Summary Effect analysis was carried out for causal estimates and evaluation for the horizontal pleiotropy. Multivariable MR and the mediation effects analysis were used to test whether the causal associations were mediated by potential confounders. A suggestively significant causal association between childhood sunburn and MM was indicated (OR = 4.74; 95% CI: 1.31-17.19; p = 1.79E-02). Genetically predicted childhood sunburn was significantly associated with increased risk of overall melanoma in situ (MIS) (OR = 4.02; 95% CI: 2.00-8.08; p = 9.40E-05), MIS of face (OR = 18.28; 95% CI: 5.28-63.35; p = 4.59E-06), and MIS of trunk (OR = 7.05; 95% CI: 2.06-24.13; p = 1.88E-03). Similar trends were found for childhood sunburn and NMSC (OR = 8.16; 95% CI: 6.07-10.99; p = 1.53E-20), including both basal cell carcinoma (BCC) (OR = 3.76; 95% CI:2.96-4.77; p = 2.19E-08) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (OR = 7.44; 95% CI: 5.09-10.87; p = 2.19E-08). After adjustment for hair and skin color, facial ageing, vitamin D levels, body mass index, alcohol consumption, and smoking status, childhood sunburn showed an independent association with MIS, MIS of face, MIS of trunk, as well as NMSC, including both BCC and SCC. Mediation analysis showed no significant mediation effect. This study demonstrated a causal relationship between childhood sunburn and the risk of both MM and NMSC, which suggested that enhanced screening and prevention for childhood sunburn could contribute to the early detection and decreased risk of MM and NMSC.

BACKGROUND
Incidence of skin cancer has been increasing among U.S. Hispanics, who often are diagnosed with larger lesions and at later stage disease. Behaviors to decrease exposure to ultraviolet radiation can reduce risk of skin cancer. We describe skin cancer prevention behaviors and psychosocial variables among Hispanic participants recruited into a skin cancer prevention trial.
METHODS
Self-reported Hispanic participants from eight primary care clinics in Tampa, Florida and Ponce, Puerto Rico were recruited into a randomized controlled prevention trial. Information on demographics, sun-related behaviors, and psychosocial variables were collected before intervention materials were provided. Multivariable regression models were used to compare baseline sun-related behaviors and psychosocial variables across groups defined by geographic location and language preference.
RESULTS
Participants reported low levels of intentional outdoor tanning, weekday and weekend sun exposure, and very low levels of indoor tanning. However, only a minority of participants practiced sun-protective behaviors often or always, and about 30% experienced a sunburn in the past year. Participants had low levels of recent worry and concern about skin cancer, modest levels of perceived risk and severity, and high levels of response efficacy and self-efficacy. When comparing across groups defined by geographic location and language preference, English-preferring Tampa residents (hereafter referred to as Tampeños) had the highest proportion who were sunburned (35.9%) and tended toward more risky behavior but also had higher protective behavior than did Spanish-preferring Tampeños or Puerto Ricans. Spanish-preferring Puerto Ricans had higher recent concern about skin cancer, comparative chance of getting skin cancer, and response efficacy compared to either English- or Spanish-preferring Tampeños. Spanish-preferring Tampeños had the highest levels of familism and recent distress about skin cancer.
CONCLUSIONS
Our results mirror previous observations of low levels of sun-protective behavior among U.S. Hispanics compelling the need for culturally appropriate and translated awareness campaigns targeted to this population. Because Hispanics in Tampa and Puerto Rico reported modest levels of perceived risk and severity, and high levels of response efficacy and self-efficacy, interventions aiming to improve skin cancer prevention activities that are anchored in Protection Motivation Theory may be particularly effective in this population subgroup.

Human skin microbes play critical roles in skin health and diseases. Microbes colonizing on the skin of Tibetans living in the high-altitude area for generations may have a stronger ability to resist the harsh environment, such as high ultraviolet radiation (UV). Isolation of a potential probiotic from Tibetans skin is beneficial for resistance of skin disease for humans in the world. In this study, the signature microbiota for Tibetan skin were characterized compared to low-altitude humans. Next, using culture-omics, 118 species were isolated. The culturability of high-altitude of Tibetan skin microbiome reached approximate 66.8%. Next, we found that one strain, , had the greatest ability to repair UV damage to the skin as the lowest pathological score was observed in this group. Interestingly, another animal trial found this bacterium resisted UV rather than its metabolites. Using whole genome sequencing, this strain was confirmed, and its functions were annotated. It might involve in the metabolic pathway of carotenoid biosynthesis with anti-oxidative stress properties, which plays critical roles in UV-damage repair. In conclusion, we characterized the signature microbes of skin in high-altitude Tibetans, isolated a skin bacterium of which could repair UV damage via involving the metabolic pathway of carotenoid biosynthesis. Our results provide a new potential skin probiotic for skin disease prevention or sunburn.
