OBJECTIVE
Surgeon burnout has received increasing attention due to evidence of high prevalence across specialties. We aimed to (1) systematically characterize existing definitions of burnout, (2) evaluate tools to measure burnout, and (3) determine risk factors of surgical burnout.
DESIGN
PubMed, Google Scholar, and Embase databases were searched to identify burnout rates and tools used to measure the quality of life (QoL) published from January 2000-December 2021.
PARTICIPANTS
Surgical Trainees and Practicing Surgeons.
RESULTS
We identified 39 studies that defined surgical burnout, with 9 separate tools used to measure QoL. Surgeon burnout rates were found to be highest among general surgery trainees (20%-95%). Burnout among general surgery attendings ranged from 25% to 44%. Those most likely to experience burnout were younger and female. High rates of surgeon burnout were reported among all surgical specialties; however, these rates were lower than those of general surgeons.
CONCLUSION
Definitions of burnout vary throughout the surgical literature, but are consistently characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of personal accomplishment. The most utilized tool to measure surgical burnout has been the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Across specialties, there are high rates of burnout in both surgical trainees and attendings, indicating that this is a systemic issue within the field of surgery. Given the wide-scale nature of the problem, it is recommended that institutions provide support to surgical trainees and attending surgeons and that individual surgeons take steps toward mitigating burnout.

BACKGROUND
Burnout is a consequence of chronic occupational stress exposure. Psychiatrists are prone to burnout due to specific work-related factors. This study examined the burnout prevalence among psychiatrists.
METHODS
The study protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020204615). We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, ClinicalTrials.gov, and OpenGrey for relevant publications. Random-effect meta-analysis was performed. We used subgroup analysis and meta-regression to reveal any association of geographical region, survey year, participants' age, gender, and response rate with burnout.
RESULTS
Thirty-six studies involving 5481 participants were included. The prevalence of overall burnout was 25.9% [11.1%-40.7%] as measured by a Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and 50.3% [30.9%-69.8%] as measured by a Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI). The pooled prevalence was 43.5% [27.9%-59%] for high emotional exhaustion (EE), 28.2% [17.5%-38.9%] for high depersonalization (DP), and 32.4% [3.4%-61.3%] for low personal accomplishment (PA). The mean scores of 22-item MBI subscales were 21.51 [18.64%-24.38%] for EE, 6.57 [5.53%-7.62%] for DP, and 31.83 [25.73%-37.94%] for PA. European psychiatrists revealed (p = 0.045) lower EE score (20.82; 95% CI 7.24-24.41) measured by 22-item MBI compared to their non-European colleagues (24.99; 95% CI 23.05-26.94). Other results include mean scores for 16-item MBI-General Survey, burnout rates, and scores in CBI subscales.
LIMITATIONS
The main limitation was high heterogeneity in terms of statistics, screening methods, burnout definitions, and cut-off points utilized in included studies.
CONCLUSIONS
Burnout is highly prevalent among psychiatrists. Future research should focus on finding consensus on burnout screening, longitudinal evaluation of psychiatrists' burnout predictors, and development of effective intervention strategies.

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Burnout, Compassion Fatigue, and Compassion Satisfaction in Healthcare Personnel: A Systematic Review of the Literature Published during the First Year of the Pandemic.
This literature review aimed to determine the level of burnout, compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction, as well as their associated risks and protective factors, in healthcare professionals during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. We reviewed 2858 records obtained from the CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed, and Web of Science databases, and finally included 76 in this review. The main results we found showed an increase in the rate of burnout, dimensions of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and compassion fatigue; a reduction in personal accomplishment; and levels of compassion satisfaction similar to those before the pandemic. The main risk factors associated with burnout were anxiety, depression, and insomnia, along with some sociodemographic variables such as being a woman or a nurse or working directly with COVID-19 patients. Comparable results were found for compassion fatigue, but information regarding compassion satisfaction was lacking. The main protective factors were resilience and social support.

BACKGROUND
Significant proportions of burnout have been reported among both oncologists and oncology nurses. However, these groups have not been compared in a meta-analytic design. It is important to compare how burnout affects different types of health professionals to understand its individual implications and devise ways of minimizing and treating it.
OBJECTIVE
The current meta-analysis study aimed to systematically compare burnout prevalence between oncologists and oncology nurses.
METHOD
Authors assessed 34 studies (four included nurses and oncologists and 30 focused either on oncologists or oncology nurses) that used the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) to measure burnout. Both fixed- and random-effects models were used to calculate meta-analytic estimates of the burnout subscales: emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and personal accomplishment (PA).
RESULTS
The pooled sample size was 4,705 oncologists and 6,940 oncology nurses. The average proportions of EE, DP, and PA were 32%, 26%, and 25%, respectively, among oncologists and 32%, 21%, and 26%, respectively, among oncology nurses. Higher DP was found among oncologists compared with oncology nurses, only in the analysis of studies that included samples of both oncologists and oncology nurses. The subgroup analysis showed higher levels of DP in Europe and Asia and lower PA in Asia and Canada. No evidence of publication bias was found.
CONCLUSIONS
Findings suggest differences in burnout between oncologists and oncology nurses and among geographic regions. This highlights the need for tailored interventions for different professions and regions. Hospitals should provide support and encourage teamwork to improve oncology professionals' well-being and provide optimal care for patients. BACKGROUND
Burnout among general practitioners (GPs) has attracted the attention of more and more researchers. An adequate understanding the prevalence and related factors of burnout to prevent and reduce burnout is necessary. This study systematically measured the global prevalence of burnout among GPs.
METHODS
Eligible original studies were identified from the PubMed, Ovid Embase, Ovid Medline (R), and Web of science databases. We searched the full-time period available for each database, up to 30 September 2021. The adjusted prevalence rate was estimated using a random-effects meta-analysis. The heterogeneity was evaluated using I2 statistic. Differences by study-level characteristics were estimated via subgroup analyses and meta-regression.
RESULTS
A total of 16 cross-sectional studies with 7,595 participants were included. The pooled burnout rate showed 37%, 28%, and 26% of general GPs suffer from high emotional exhaustion (EE), high depersonalization (DP), and low personal exhaustion (PA), respectively. Groups comparisons found that high EE, high DP, and low PA rate data obtained from 2001 to 2009, high DP rate data obtained from Europe, low PA rate data obtained from high-quality studies had much higher rates.
CONCLUSIONS
This study demonstrated the prevalence of burnout in the GPs and alert health managers to tailor their strategies to retain this community. Targeted initiatives are needed to provide adequate GPs' well-being and maintain primary health care.

Burnout and post-traumatic stress disorder in frontline nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic: a systematic literature review and meta-analysis of studies published in 2020.
This study aimed to systematically synthesize evidence regarding burnout and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among nurses engaged in the frontline during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting their risk and protective factors. The specific literature on nurses' mental health outcomes still remains not synthesized. A systematic review was performed (PROSPERO: CRD42021227939), searching literature published in 2020 on Pubmed, Scopus, CINAHL, and PsycInfo. We quantitatively pooled means of included studies measuring burnout and PTSD with the same tools. Twenty-five studies were included in this review. Seven (3766 nurses) were included in the meta-analysis for estimating means of depersonalization and emotional exhaustion assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory, respectively: 7,40 (95%CI=6,00-8,80) and 22,82 (95%CI=19,24-26,41). Likely, 12 studies were used to estimate two pooled means for PTSD, one for six studies adopting the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (1551 nurses), and six adopting the PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (8547 nurses). The main risk and protective factors of both outcomes were female sex and younger age, work-related variables, and physical and mental factors, such as concerns, skin lesions from wearing personal protective equipment. This systematic review portrayed the situation described in literature during 2020 on nurses' burnout and PTSD during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the outcomes' levels described in the included studies are diverse, the broad situation appears alarming, and supportive multi-level strategies, considering individual and system-level, should be planned to decrease the described worsening scenario within the clinical settings avoid middle and long-term negative consequences.

Burnout is a work-related syndrome documented to have negative consequences for GPs and their patients.
AIM
To review the existing literature concerning studies published up to December 2020 on the prevalence of burnout among GPs in general practice, and to determine GP burnout estimates worldwide.
DESIGN AND SETTING
Systematic literature search and meta-analysis.
METHOD
Searches of CINAHL Plus, Embase, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Scopus were conducted to identify published peer-reviewed quantitative empirical studies in English up to December 2020 that have used the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey to establish the prevalence of burnout in practising GPs (that is, excluding GPs in training). A random-effects model was employed.
RESULTS
Wide-ranging prevalence estimates (6% to 33%) across different dimensions of burnout were reported for 22 177 GPs across 29 countries were reported for 60 studies included in this review. Mean burnout estimates were: 16.43 for emotional exhaustion; 6.74 for depersonalisation; and 29.28 for personal accomplishment. Subgroup and meta-analyses documented that country-specific factors may be important determinants of the variation in GP burnout estimates. Moderate overall burnout cut-offs were found to be determinants of the variation in moderate overall burnout estimates.
CONCLUSION
Moderate to high GP burnout exists worldwide. However, substantial variations in how burnout is characterised and operationalised has resulted in considerable heterogeneity in GP burnout prevalence estimates. This highlights the challenge of developing a uniform approach, and the importance of considering GPs' work context to better characterise burnout.

Burnout can be defined as an occupational syndrome resulting from poorly managed chronic workplace stress. It is characterized by three dimensions: feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; increased mental distance from one's job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job; and reduced professional efficacy. Teachers are among the human service professionals particularly vulnerable to occupational burnout. Teaching is a highly demanding and challenging task, in that requires constant confrontation with different stakeholders (students and their parents, administrators). Among teachers, physical education teachers have been particularly understudied even though a recently published systematic review has found that they are exposed to high levels of stress. To better explore burnout syndrome among physical education teachers, the present systematic review was undertaken, searching up to six languages. Fifty-six studies were included in the present review. The reported rate of high emotional exhaustion ranged from 11.52 to 60.6%, according to the single study. Pooling together 12 studies and totaling 2,153 physical education teachers, the prevalence rate of high emotional exhaustion was computed to be 28.6 [95% CI 21.9-35.8]. The reported rate of high depersonalization ranged from 3.6 to 45.2%, according to the single study. Pooling together 11 studies and totaling 2,113 physical education teachers, the prevalence rate of high depersonalization was computed to be 14.5% [95% CI 8.0-22.4]. The reported rate of low personal accomplishment ranged from 13.63 to 55.6%, according to the single study. Pooling together 12 studies and totaling 2,153 physical education teachers, the prevalence rate of low personal accomplishment was computed to be 29.5% [95% CI 23.8-35.4]. The reported rate of overall burnout ranged from 10.0 to 51.6%, according to the single study. Pooling together 7 studies and totaling 1,101 physical education teachers, the prevalence rate of overall burnout was computed to be 23.9% [95% CI 13.6-36.0]. No evidence of publication bias could be found, both visually inspecting the funnel plot and conducting the Egger's linear regression test. Burnout imposes a significant burden among physical education teachers. Based on the information contained in the present systematic review and meta-analysis, tailored interventions could be designed to mitigate such a burden. Burnout among healthcare personnel has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic's unique features. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this systematic review and meta-analysis aims to provide a complete assessment of the prevalence of burnout across various healthcare personnel. Until January 2021, systematic searches for English language papers were conducted using PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and ProQuest. Thirty observational studies were found after conducting systematic searches. The pooled overall prevalence of burnout was 52% [95% confidence interval (CI) 40-63%]. Pooled emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and lack of personal accomplishment (PA) were 51% (95% CI 42-61%), 52% (95% CI 39-65%), and 28% (95% CI 25-31%), respectively. This study demonstrated that nearly half of the healthcare workers experienced burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the studies that were included, non-frontline COVID-19 exposed healthcare personnel also experienced burnout. From high to lower middle-income countries, there was a gradient in the prevalence of total burnout, EE, and lack of PA. Further studies on burnout in low and lower-middle-income countries are suggested. A uniform diagnostic tool for the assessment of burnout is warranted.

Nursing is considered to be an at-risk profession of burnout due to daily exposure to difficult situations such as death and pain care. In addition, some units such as the intensive care unit (ICU), can be stressful due to high levels of morbidity and mortality and ethical dilemmas. Burnout causes a deterioration in quality of care, increasing the risk of mortality in patients due to poor performance and errors in the healthcare environment. The aim of this study was to analyse the levels, prevalence and related factors of burnout in ICU nurses. A systematic review and meta-analysis were carried out in the Medline, Scopus and CINAHL databases. Fifteen articles were found for the systematic review and four for the meta-analysis. With a sample of = 1986 nurses, the meta-analytic estimate prevalence for high emotional exhaustion was 31% (95% CI, 8-59%), for high depersonalization was 18% (95% CI, 8-30%), and for low personal accomplishment was 46% (95% CI, 20-74%). Within the dimensions of burnout, emotional exhaustion had a significant relationship with depression and personality factors. Both sociodemographic factors (being younger, single marital status, and having less professional experience in ICU) and working conditions (workload and working longer hours) influence the risk of burnout syndrome.
