Growing evidence supports dopamine's role in aversive states, yet systematic reviews focusing on dopamine receptors in defensive behaviors are lacking. This study presents a systematic review of the literature examining the influence of drugs acting on dopamine D2-like receptors on unconditioned and conditioned fear in rodents. The review reveals a predominant use of adult male rats in the studies, with limited inclusion of female rodents. Commonly employed tests include the elevated plus maze and auditory-cued fear conditioning. The findings indicate that systemic administration of D2-like drugs has a notable impact on both innate and learned aversive states. Generally, antagonists tend to increase unconditioned fear, while agonists decrease it. Moreover, both agonists and antagonists typically reduce conditioned fear. These effects are attributed to the involvement of distinct neural circuits in these states. The observed increase in unconditioned fear induced by D2-like antagonists aligns with dopamine's role in suppressing midbrain-mediated responses. Conversely, the reduction in conditioned fear is likely a result of blocking dopamine activity in the mesolimbic pathway. The study highlights the need for future research to delve into sex differences, explore alternative testing paradigms, and identify specific neural substrates. Such investigations have the potential to advance our understanding of the neurobiology of aversive states and enhance the therapeutic application of dopaminergic agents.

While psychological stress is believed to contribute to abnormal menstruation, little is known of the effects of discrete psychological stressors, including the COVID-19 pandemic, on menstrual function. A systematic database search was performed and studies investigating the relation between psychological stress and menstrual cycle irregularity in otherwise healthy adults were included. Two independent investigators completed abstract and full-text screening, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment. In the 41 included studies, a variety of stressors were assessed, namely COVID-19 pandemic stress, academic stress, and occupational stress. Our review found most studies report an association between psychological stress and menstrual dysfunction, with the most common disruptions being irregular menstruation and abnormal menstrual flow. Our findings also underlined notable discrepancies in the operational definitions used in the study of menstrual disorders. These observations emphasize the importance of psychological stress as a modifiable risk factor associated with irregular menstruation.
PRISMA ABSTRACT
Background: Regular menstruation is a key indicator of general health and irregular menstrual parameters have been associated with elevated risk of adverse health outcomes. As such, we aimed to systematically review the evidence on the associations between adulthood psychological stress and irregular menstruation.
METHODS
A systematic database search of MEDLINE, APA PsycInfo, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, CINAHL, and Web of Science was performed on May 18, 2023, and studies investigating the relation between psychological stress and menstrual cycle irregularity in otherwise healthy adults were included (PROSPERO record: CRD42023428005). Two independent investigators completed abstract and full-text screening, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment using the JBI critical appraisal checklist for analytical cross-sectional studies. Findings are summarized using descriptive statistics.
RESULTS
The review included 41 studies, totalizing 39,756 participants, which were recruited from 30 countries across the world. A variety of stressors were assessed, namely COVID-19 pandemic stress, academic stress, and occupational stress. Our review found most studies to report an association between psychological stress and increased menstrual dysfunction, with the most common disruptions being irregular menstruation and abnormal menstrual flow.
CONCLUSIONS
Our review underlined notable discrepancies in the operational definitions used in the study of menstrual disorders. Overall, these observations emphasize the importance of psychological stress as a modifiable risk factor associated with irregular menstruation.

OBJECTIVE
Over the past 4 decades, discrepant research findings have emerged in the juror-confession literature, prompting the need for a systematic review and meta-analysis that assesses the effect of confession evidence (coerced or noncoerced) on conviction rates and the efficacy of trial safeguards.
HYPOTHESES
We did not predict any directional hypotheses. Some studies show increased convictions when a confession is present (vs. not), regardless of whether that confession was coerced; other studies demonstrate that jurors are able to discount coerced confessions. Studies have also demonstrated sensitivity effects (safeguards aided jurors in making appropriate decisions), skepticism effects (safeguards led jurors to indiscriminately disregard confession evidence), or null effects with regard to expert testimony and jury instructions.
METHOD
We identified 83 independent samples (N = 24,860) that met our meta-analytic inclusion criteria. Using extracted Hedges' g effect sizes, we conducted both network meta-analysis and metaregression to address key research questions.
RESULTS
Coerced and noncoerced confessions (vs. no confession) increased convictions (network gs = 0.34 and 0.70, respectively), yet coerced (vs. noncoerced) confessions reduced convictions (network g = -0.36). When jury instructions were employed (vs. not), convictions in coerced confession cases were reduced (this difference did not emerge for noncoerced confessions; a sensitivity effect). Expert testimony, however, reduced conviction likelihood regardless of whether a confession was coerced (a skepticism effect).
CONCLUSION
Confession evidence is persuasive, and although jurors appear to recognize the detrimental effect of coercive interrogation methods on confession reliability, they do not fully discount unreliable confessions. Educational safeguards are therefore needed, but more research is encouraged to identify the most effective forms of jury instructions and expert testimony. One potential reform could be in the interrogation room itself, as science-based interviewing approaches could provide jurors with more reliable defendant statement evidence that assists them in reaching appropriate verdict decisions. BACKGROUND
Three meta-analyses suggested that the psychological assessment as a therapeutic intervention approach might have therapeutic effects but had unspecific inclusion criteria.
METHODS
We searched four databases for RCTs that reported on the use of psychological assessment as an intervention. Two reviewers independently selected papers, extracted data, and assessed study quality.We conducted and reported the systematic review following the PRISMA statement. We assessed the Risk of bias in included studies using the Risk of Bias tool and graded the strength of the evidence with GRADE.
RESULTS
We included two RCTs: The first study investigated Therapeutic Assessment (TA) combined with Manual-Assisted Cognitive Behavior Therapy (MACT) compared with MACT only in 16 outpatients with personality disorders. The trial found among completers ( = 7) no difference in borderline symptomatology but a possible difference regarding suicidality favoring MACT + TA. The trial did not provide any outcomes relating to readiness for treatment. The other trial investigated TA compared with a Goal-focused Pretreatment Intervention in a sample of 74 outpatients with personality disorders. The results found no intervention effects on symptomatology but suggested that TA might improve patient expectancy for future treatment among completers of the intervention. Both trials were judged at a high risk of bias and with very low certainty of evidence.
DISCUSSION
We found no support for the clinical effect of psychological assessment as a therapeutic intervention due to the high risk of bias and low certainty of the evidence.

BACKGROUND
Previous neuroimaging studies have revealed structural and functional brain abnormalities in patients with cervical spondylosis (CS). However, the results are divergent and inconsistent. Therefore, the present study conducted a multi-modal meta-analysis to investigate the consistent structural and functional brain alterations in CS patients.
METHODS
A comprehensive literature search was conducted in five databases to retrieve relevant resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI), structural MRI and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies that measured brain functional and structural differences between CS patients and healthy controls (HCs). Separate and multimodal meta-analyses were implemented, respectively, by employing Anisotropic Effect-size Signed Differential Mapping software.
RESULTS
13 rs-fMRI studies that used regional homogeneity, amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) and fractional ALFF, seven voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies and one DTI study were finally included in the present research. However, no studies on surface-based morphometry (SBM) analysis were included in this research. Due to the insufficient number of SBM and DTI studies, only rs-fMRI and VBM meta-analyses were conducted. The results of rs-fMRI meta-analysis showed that compared to HCs, CS patients demonstrated decreased regional spontaneous brain activities in the right lingual gyrus, right middle temporal gyrus (MTG), left inferior parietal gyrus and right postcentral gyrus (PoCG), while increased activities in the right medial superior frontal gyrus, bilateral middle frontal gyrus and right precuneus. VBM meta-analysis detected increased GMV in the right superior temporal gyrus (STG) and right paracentral lobule (PCL), while decreased GMV in the left supplementary motor area and left MTG in CS patients. The multi-modal meta-analysis revealed increased GMV together with decreased regional spontaneous brain activity in the left PoCG, right STG and PCL among CS patients.
CONCLUSION
This meta-analysis revealed that compared to HCs, CS patients had significant alterations in GMV and regional spontaneous brain activity. The altered brain regions mainly included the primary visual cortex, the default mode network and the sensorimotor area, which may be associated with CS patients' symptoms of sensory deficits, blurred vision, cognitive impairment and motor dysfunction. The findings may contribute to understanding the underlying pathophysiology of brain dysfunction and provide references for early diagnosis and treatment of CS.

INTRODUCTION
The knee is the most commonly affected joint in osteoarthritis (OA), affecting millions of people worldwide. Knee OA significantly impacts the activities of daily living (ADL) along with affecting overall quality of life of patients (QoL), thereby leading to substantial socio-economic burden. Conservative therapies are prioritized, resorting to surgery only when needed. However, these traditional approaches have limitations. Regenerative medicine, involving the use of orthobiologics, including autologous peripheral blood-derived orthobiologics such as growth factor concentrate (GFC), has evolved and shown potential for managing knee OA. The primary goal of this review is to summarize the results of in vitro, preclinical and clinical studies involving GFC for the management of knee OA.
METHODS
Multiple databases (PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science and Embase) were searched applying terms for the intervention 'GFC' and treatment 'knee OA' for the studies published in the English language to March 10, 2024.
RESULTS
Only three clinical studies met our pre-defined criteria and were included in this review.
CONCLUSION
Intra-articular administration of GFC is safe and potentially efficacious to manage OA of the knee. More, adequately powered, multi-center, prospective, RCTs are warranted to demonstrate the long-term effectiveness of GFC in patients suffering from mild-to-moderate knee OA and to justify its routine clinical use. Further studies evaluating the efficacy of GFC compared to other orthobiologics are also required to allow physicians/surgeons to choose the optimal orthobiologic for the treatment of OA of the knee.

Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) lessens ischemic brain injury. Cytoprotective agents can augment protection, although it is unclear which combinations are most effective. The objective of this study is to identify which cytoprotective drug works best with delayed TH. Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic review (PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, Scopus) identified controlled experiments that used an focal ischemic stroke model and evaluated the efficacy of TH (delay of ≥1 hour) coupled with cytoprotective agents. This combination was our main intervention compared with single treatments with TH, drug, or no treatment. Endpoints were brain injury and neurological impairment. The CAMARADES checklist for study quality and the SYRCLE's risk of bias tool gauged study quality. Twenty-five studies were included. Most used young, healthy male rats, with only one using spontaneously hypertensive rats. Two studies used mice models, and six used adult animals. Study quality was moderate (median score = 6), and risk of bias was high. Pharmacological agents provided an additive effect on TH for all outcomes measured. Magnesium coupled with TH had the greatest impact compared with other agent-TH combinations on all outcomes. Longer TH durations improved both behavioral and histological outcomes and had greater cytoprotective efficacy than shorter durations. Anti-inflammatories were the most effective in reducing infarction (standardized mean difference [SMD]: -1.64, confidence interval [CI]: [-2.13, -1.15]), sulfonylureas reduced edema the most (SMD: -2.32, CI: [-3.09, -1.54]), and antiapoptotic agents improved behavioral outcomes the most (normalized mean difference: 52.38, CI: [45.29, 59.46]). Statistically significant heterogeneity was observed ( = 82 - 98%, all < 0.001), indicating that studies wildly differ in their effect size estimates. Our results support the superiority of adding cytoprotective therapies with TH (vs. individual or no therapy). Additional exploratory and confirmatory studies are required to identify and thoroughly assess combination therapies owing to limited work and inconsistent translational quality.

Research has indicated unique challenges in audiovisual integration of speech among autistic individuals, although methodological differences have led to divergent findings. We conducted a systematic literature search to identify studies that measured audiovisual speech integration among both autistic and non-autistic individuals. Across the 18 identified studies (combined N = 952), autistic individuals showed impaired audiovisual integration compared to their non-autistic peers (g = 0.69, 95% CI [0.53, 0.85], p <.001). This difference was not found to be influenced by participants' mean ages, studies' sample sizes, risk-of-bias scores, or paradigms investigated. However, a subgroup analysis suggested that child studies may show larger between-group differences than adult ones. The prevailing pattern of impaired audiovisual speech integration in autism may have cascading effects on communicative and social behavior. However, small samples and inconsistency in design/analysis translated into considerable heterogeneity in findings and opacity regarding the influence of underlying unisensory and attentional factors. We recommend three key directions for future research: larger samples, more research with adults, and standardization of methodology and analytical approaches.

OBJECTIVES
Loneliness and social isolation are associated with adverse health outcomes, especially within the elderly population, underlining the need for effective interventions. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to summarize all available evidence regarding the effectiveness of interventions for loneliness and social isolation, to map out their working mechanisms, and to give implications for policy and practice.
DESIGN
Systematic literature review and meta-analysis.
SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS
Older adults (≥65 years).
METHODS
A systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL for studies quantitively or qualitatively assessing effects of interventions for loneliness and social isolation in older adults, following predefined selection criteria. Risk of bias as well as small study effects were assessed and, wherever appropriate, information about effect sizes of individual studies pooled using random-effects meta-analyses. Sources for between-study heterogeneity were explored using meta-regression.
RESULTS
Of n = 2223 identified articles, n = 67 were eventually included for narrative synthesis. Significant intervention effects were reported for a proportion of studies (55.9% and 50.0% for loneliness and social isolation, respectively) and 57.6% of studies including a follow-up measure (n = 29) reported sustained intervention effects. Meta-analysis of n = 27 studies, representing n = 1756 participants, suggested a medium overall effect of loneliness interventions (d = -0.47; 95% CI, -0.62 to -0.32). Between-study heterogeneity was substantial and could not be explained by differences in study design, year of publication, outcome measures, intervention length, participant demographics, setting, baseline level of loneliness, or geographic location. However, non-technology-based interventions reported larger effect sizes on average (Δd = -0.35; 95% CI, -0.66 to -0.04; P = .029) and were more often significant. Qualitative assessment of potential intervention mechanisms resulted in 3 clusters of effective components: "promoting social contact," "transferring knowledge and skills," and "addressing social cognition".
CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS
Interventions for loneliness and social isolation can generally be effective, although some unexplained between-study heterogeneity remains. Further research is needed regarding the applicability of interventions across different settings and countries, also considering their cost-effectiveness.

BACKGROUND
Together with environmental factors, intrinsic capacity (the composite of all the physical and mental capacities of an individual) has been proposed as a marker of healthy ageing. However, whether intrinsic capacity predicts major clinical outcomes is unclear. We aimed to explore the association of intrinsic capacity with functional decline and mortality in older adults.
METHODS
In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we conducted a systematic search in MEDLINE (via PubMed), Scopus, and Web of Science from database inception to Feb 14, 2024, of observational longitudinal studies conducted in older adults (age ≥60 years) assessing the association of intrinsic capacity with impairment in basic activities of daily living (BADL) or instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) or risk of mortality. Estimates were extracted by two reviewers (JLS-S and W-HL) and were pooled using three-level meta-analytic models. The quality of each study was independently assessed by two authors (JLS-S and PLV) using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for longitudinal studies. Heterogeneity was evaluated using the I indicator at two levels: within-study (level 2) and between-study (level 3) variation. For associations between intrinsic capacity and IADL and BADL, we transformed data (standardised β coefficients and odds ratios [ORs]) into Pearson product moment correlation coefficients (r) using Pearson and Digby formulas to allow comparability across studies. For associations between intrinsic capacity and risk of mortality, hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% CIs were extracted from survival analyses. This study is registered with PROSPERO, CRD42023460482.
FINDINGS
We included 37 studies (206 693 participants; average age range 65·3-85·9 years) in the systematic review, of which 31 were included in the meta-analysis on the association between intrinsic capacity and outcomes; three studies (2935 participants) were included in the meta-analysis on the association between intrinsic capacity trajectories and longitudinal changes in BADL or IADL. Intrinsic capacity was inversely associated with longitudinal impairments in BADL (Pearson's r -0·12 [95% CI -0·19 to -0·04]) and IADL (-0·24 [-0·35 to -0·13]), as well as with mortality risk (hazard ratio 0·57 [95% CI 0·51 to 0·63]). An association was also found between intrinsic capacity trajectories and impairment in IADL (but not in BADL), with maintained or improved intrinsic capacity over time associated with a lower impairment in IADL (odds ratio 0·37 [95% CI 0·19 to 0·71]). There was no evidence of publication bias (Egger's test p>0·05) and there was low between-study heterogeneity (I=18·4%), though within-study (I=63·2%) heterogeneity was substantial.
INTERPRETATION
Intrinsic capacity is inversely associated with functional decline and mortality risk in older adults. These findings could support the use of intrinsic capacity as a marker of healthy ageing, although further research is needed to refine the structure and operationalisation of this construct across settings and populations.
