A systematic review and meta-analysis.
OBJECTIVE
Treatment of traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) has been a subject of debate for many decades due to the scarcity of evidence-based treatment protocols. This review compares surgical decompression (SD) and steroid therapy (ST) as treatment approaches in TON patients.
METHODS
A PRISMA-guided systematic review using PubMed, Embase, Ovid and Scopus databases was performed till the last search date of July 31st 2021. The outcome of interest was an improvement in visual acuity. A meta-analysis of the odds ratio was performed using a random-effect model and sub-group analysis based upon criteria for assessment of improvement in visual acuity.
RESULTS
Sixteen studies (including 1046 patients) were included in the review. The review could identify 590 patients treated with SD and 456 treated with ST. In addition, there was a second cohort of patients presenting with NLP (no light perception). A meta-analysis with a sub-group analysis revealed that there was statistically no significant difference between the two treatment approaches in terms of improvement in VA.
CONCLUSIONS
There is no difference in treatment results of SD or ST for TON. Several treatment protocols and different criteria for assessing visual acuity led to difficulty in generating evidence for selecting the correct treatment approach.

Standard automated perimetery is considered the gold standard for evaluating a patient's visual field. However, it is costly and requires a fixed testing environment. In response, perimetric devices using virtual reality (VR) headsets have emerged as an alternative way to measure visual fields in patients. This systematic review aims to characterize both novel and established VR headsets in the literature and explore their potential applications within visual field testing. A search was conducted using MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and the Core Collection (Web of Science) for articles published until January 2023. Subject headings and keywords related to virtual reality and visual field were used to identify studies specific to this topic. Records were first screened by title/abstract and then by full text using predefined criteria. Data was extracted accordingly. A total of 2404 records were identified from the databases. After deduplication and the two levels of screening, 64 studies describing 36 VR headset perimetry devices were selected for extraction. These devices encompassed various visual field measurement techniques, including static and kinetic perimetry, with some offering vision rehabilitation capabilities. This review reveals a growing consensus that VR headset perimetry devices perform comparably to, or even better than, standard automated perimetry. They are better tolerated by patients in terms of gaze fixation, more cost-effective, and generally more accessible for patients with limited mobility.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with deficits in social functioning, including peer difficulties and poor relationship quality. Little is known, however, about the integrity of foundational sociocognitive abilities that support interpersonal interactions in ADHD. Face processing-a fundamental component of social cognition-has been a popular topic of recent investigations in this area. Researchers have attempted to delineate face processing mechanisms in ADHD to elucidate social deficits often seen in the disorder. Investigating the N170 event-related potential, a neural marker of face processing, has been a popular approach in this endeavour. Here, we present two accounts that offer competing views of how social deficits might arise in those with ADHD. Next, we systematically review and synthesise the literature on the N170 in ADHD to identify whether atypicalities in sociocognitive domains like face processing occur in this patient population. Gaps in the literature are identified and concrete solutions are offered to improve future research in this area. We end by discussing immediate implications for treatment approaches designed to address widely observed social deficits in individuals with ADHD. Sensory Substitution (SS) allows the elaboration of information via non preferential sensory modalities. This phenomenon occurs in robotic-assisted surgery (RAS), in which haptic feedback is lacking. It has been suggested that SS could sustain surgeons' proficiency by means of visual clues for inferring tactile information, that also promotes the feeling of haptic phantom sensations. A critical role in reaching a good performance in procedural tasks is also sustained by the Sense of Embodiment (SE), that is, the capacity to integrate objects into subjective bodily self-representation. As SE is enhanced by haptic sensations, we hypothesize a role of SS in promoting SE in RAS. Accordingly, the goal of this systematic review is to summarize the evidence pertaining the study of SS in RAS in order to highlight the impact on the performance, and to identify a mediating role of the SE in increasing dexterity in RAS. Eight studies selected from the MEDLINE and Scopus® databases met inclusion criteria for a qualitative synthesis. Results indicated that haptic to other modalities SS enhanced force consistency and accuracy, and decreased surgeon fatigue. Expert surgeons, as compared to novices, showed a better natural SS processing, testified by a proficient performance with and without SS aids. No studies investigated the mediating role of SE. These findings indicate that SS is subjected to learning and memory processes that help surgeons to rapidly derive haptic-correlates from visual clues, which are highly required for a good performance. Also, the higher ability of doing SS and the associated perception of haptic sensations might increase multisensory integration, which might sustain performance.

BACKGROUND
Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP) is a prevalent global health issue, leading to prolonged discomfort and functional limitations. Hot spring hydrotherapy, which utilizes mineral-rich, warm spring water, offers a unique physical therapy that holds promise in alleviating CLBP symptoms.
OBJECTIVE
This meta-analysis aims to assess the effectiveness of hot spring hydrotherapy in improving CLBP symptoms, encompassing pain intensity, functional disability, quality of life, and medication usage.
METHODS
A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted by searching relevant literature in multiple databases. Included studies compared hot spring hydrotherapy with control interventions or other treatments. Standardized mean differences (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for pain intensity, functional disability, medication usage, and quality of life.
RESULTS
A total of 16 studies met the inclusion criteria, involving 1656 participants with chronic low back pain across various countries. The meta-analysis demonstrated that hot spring hydrotherapy was effective in reducing pain intensity (SMD = -0.901, 95% CI [-1.777, -0.025], < 0.05) and improving functional disability (SMD = -3.236, 95% CI [-4.898, -1.575], < 0.0001) in CLBP patients. Hot spring hydrotherapy also resulted in a significant reduction in medication usage ( < 0.05). Subgroup analysis showed that the effects of hot spring hydrotherapy were more pronounced in patients aged 60 and above, while no significant differences were observed in patients below 60 years of age, single hot Spring Hydrotherapy help improve patients' quality of life.
CONCLUSION
Hot spring hydrotherapy is an effective intervention for improving CLBP symptoms, including pain intensity, functional disability, and medication usage. It is particularly beneficial for CLBP patients aged 60 and above. These findings support the integration of hot spring hydrotherapy into the treatment approach for CLBP, although further research is needed to determine its efficacy in younger patients and to explore the underlying mechanisms of its therapeutic effects.

Alcohol has been linked to both positive (e.g., sociability) and negative (e.g., aggression) social outcomes, and researchers have proposed that alcohol-induced changes in emotion recognition may partially explain these effects. Here, we systematically review alcohol administration studies to clarify the acute effects of alcohol on emotion recognition. We also investigate various moderator variables (i.e., sex, study quality, study design, alcohol dosage, emotion recognition task and outcome measure). PsycINFO, PubMed and Google Scholar were searched following a pre-registered PROSPERO protocol (CRD42021225392) and PRISMA methodology. Analyses focused on differences in emotion recognition between participants consuming alcoholic and/or non-alcoholic (i.e., placebo or no-alcohol control) beverages. Nineteen unique samples (N = 1271 participants) were derived from 17 articles (two articles included two studies, each conducted on a unique sample). Data were extracted for sample characteristics, alcohol administration methods and emotion recognition tasks and outcomes. All studies compared an alcoholic beverage to a placebo beverage and used tasks that asked participants to identify emotions from images or videos of facial expressions. Otherwise, methodologies varied substantially across studies, including the alcohol dosage(s) tested, the specific emotion recognition task(s) used and the outcome variable(s) assessed. No consistent effects of alcohol on emotion recognition emerged for any emotion. None of the moderator variables affected the findings, except for some indication that alcohol may affect males' emotion recognition abilities more so than females. Alcohol does not appear to consistently affect positive or negative emotion recognition of facial expressions, at least with the tasks currently used in the field.

With the introduction of therapies to treat geographic atrophy (GA), GA management in clinical practice is now possible. A living systematic review can provide access to timely and robust evidence synthesis. This review found that complement factor 3 and 5 (C3 and C5) inhibition compared to sham likely reduces change in square root GA area at 12 months and untransformed GA area at 24 months. There is likely little to no difference in the rate of systemic treatment-emergent adverse events compared to sham. C3 and C5 inhibition, however, likely does not improve best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at 12 months, and the evidence is uncertain regarding change in BCVA at 24 months. Higher rates of ocular treatment emergent adverse effects with complement inhibition occur at 12 months and likely at 24 months. Complement inhibition likely results in new onset neovascular age-related macular degeneration at 12 months. This living meta-analysis will continuously incorporate new evidence.

Diagnosis of dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) typically relies on a set of diagnostic clinical features, including decreased visual acuity, impaired color vision, presence of relative afferent pupillary defect, optic disc swelling and ancillary tests including visual field (VF), pattern visual evoked potential (pVEP), and apical crowding or optic nerve stretching on neuroimaging. We summarize various diagnostic methods to establish or rule out DON. A total of 95 studies (involving 4619 DON eyes) met the inclusion criteria. All of the studies considered clinical features as evidence of DON, while most of the studies confirmed DON diagnosis by combining clinical features with ancillary tests. Forty studies (42.1%) used at least 2 out of the 3 tests (VF, pVEP and neuroimaging) and 13 studies (13.7%) used all 3 tests to diagnose DON. In 64 % of the published studies regarding DON, the diagnostic methods of DON were not specified. It is important to note the limitations of relying solely on clinical features for diagnosing DON. On the other hand, since some eyes with optic neuropathy can be normal in one ancillary test, but abnormal in another, using more than one ancillary test to aid diagnosis is crucial and should be interpreted in correlation with clinical features. We found that the diagnostic methods of DON in most studies involved using a combination of specific clinical features and at least 2 ancillary tests.

Rhythmic visual stimulation (RVS), the periodic presentation of visual stimuli to elicit a rhythmic brain response, is increasingly applied to reveal insights into early neurocognitive development. Our systematic review identified 69 studies applying RVS in 0- to 6-year-olds. RVS has long been used to study the development of the visual system and applications have more recently been expanded to uncover higher cognitive functions in the developing brain, including overt and covert attention, face and object perception, numeral cognition, and predictive processing. These insights are owed to the unique benefits of RVS, such as the targeted frequency and stimulus-specific neural responses, as well as a remarkable signal-to-noise ratio. Yet, neural mechanisms underlying the RVS response are still poorly understood. We discuss critical challenges and avenues for future research, and the unique potentials the method holds. With this review, we provide a resource for researchers interested in the breadth of developmental RVS research and hope to inspire the future use of this cutting-edge method in developmental cognitive neuroscience.

PURPOSES
To investigate the incidence and factors influencing the occurrence of metamorphopsia in patients with simple rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) after surgery.
METHODS
Relevant studies of metamorphopsia were identified by searching in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane until August 2022. Meta-analysis of the incidence of metamorphopsia after rhegmatogenous retinal detachment surgery was performed using Review Manager 5.4 statistical software.
RESULTS
A total of 12 studies reported 1133 participants with 469 patients with postoperative metamorphopsia. The meta-analysis showed a higher incidence of metamorphopsia in macular-off cases compared with macular-on RRD (RR = 2.88, 95% CI: 2.35 to 3.52). The use of perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL) during pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) reduced the incidence of metamorphopsia (RR = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.41 to 0.92). There was no evidence of any important difference in metamorphopsia between participants in the PPV group and the scleral buckling (SB) group (RR = 1.04, 95% CI: 0.82 to 1.33). There was little or no difference in metamorphopsia between gas and silicon oil (SO) in the PPV group (RR = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.69 to 1.13).
CONCLUSION
The incidence of postoperative metamorphopsia is higher in macular-off RRD, and PFCL should be a preferred choice to prevent postoperative metamorphopsia in macula-off RRD cases.
