Chinese self-report version of biological rhythms interview for assessment in neuropsychiatry (C-BRIAN-SR) - psychometric properties and prospective follow-up in patients with non-seasonal depression.
This study examined the psychometric properties and longitudinal changes of the self-reporting Traditional Chinese version of Biological Rhythms Interview for Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (C-BRIAN-SR) among healthy controls (HC) and patients with major depressive episode (MDE). Eighty patients with a current MDE and 80 HC were recruited. Assessments were repeated after two weeks in HC, and upon the discharge of MDE patients to examine the prospective changes upon remission of depression. The C-BRIAN-SR score was significantly higher in the MDE than HC group. The concurrent validity was supported by a positive correlation between scores of C-BRIAN-SR, Insomnia Severity Index and the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale. C-BRIAN-SR negatively correlated MEQ in the MDE group ( = .30, = 0.009), suggesting higher rhythm disturbances were associated with a tendency toward eveningness. A moderate test-retest reliability was found ( = .61, < 0.001). A cut-off of 38.5 distinguished MDE subjects from HC with 82.9% of sensitivity and 81.0% of specificity. C-BRIAN-SR score normalized in remitted MDE patients but remained higher in the non-remitted. The C-BRIAN-SR is a valid and reliable scale for measuring the biological rhythms and may assist in the screening of patients with MDE.

The enhancement of associative synaptic plasticity often results in impaired rather than enhanced learning. Previously, we proposed that such learning impairments can result from saturation of the plasticity mechanism (Nguyen-Vu et al., 2017), or, more generally, from a history-dependent change in the threshold for plasticity. This hypothesis was based on experimental results from mice lacking two class I major histocompatibility molecules, MHCI H2-K and H2-D (MHCI KD), which have enhanced associative long-term depression at the parallel fiber-Purkinje cell synapses in the cerebellum (PF-Purkinje cell LTD). Here, we extend this work by testing predictions of the threshold metaplasticity hypothesis in a second mouse line with enhanced PF-Purkinje cell LTD, the knockout mouse model of Fragile X syndrome (FXS). Mice lacking gene expression in cerebellar Purkinje cells (L7- KO) were selectively impaired on two oculomotor learning tasks in which PF-Purkinje cell LTD has been implicated, with no impairment on LTD-independent oculomotor learning tasks. Consistent with the threshold metaplasticity hypothesis, behavioral pre-training designed to reverse LTD at the PF-Purkinje cell synapses eliminated the oculomotor learning deficit in the L7- KO mice, as previously reported in MHCI KDmice. In addition, diazepam treatment to suppress neural activity and thereby limit the induction of associative LTD during the pre-training period also eliminated the learning deficits in L7- KO mice. These results support the hypothesis that cerebellar LTD-dependent learning is governed by an experience-dependent sliding threshold for plasticity. An increased threshold for LTD in response to elevated neural activity would tend to oppose firing rate stability, but could serve to stabilize synaptic weights and recently acquired memories. The metaplasticity perspective could inform the development of new clinical approaches for addressing learning impairments in autism and other disorders of the nervous system.

BACKGROUND
Adherence to post-stroke secondary prevention medications mitigates recurrence risk. This study aimed to measure adherence to secondary prevention medications during 3 years post-ischemic stroke/transient ischemic attack, using prescription and dispensing data, and identify factors associated with suboptimal adherence.
METHODS
This multicenter, prospective, cohort study involved patients from the STROKE 69 cohort, which included all consecutive patients with suspected acute stroke admitted between November 2015 and December 2016 to any emergency department or stroke center in the Rhône area in France. Prescription data for antihypertensive agents, antidiabetic agents, lipid-lowering drugs, and antithrombotics were collected. Dispensing data were provided by the French regional reimbursement database. Adherence was calculated using the continuous medication acquisition index. Associations between suboptimal adherence and potential influencing factors across the World Health Organization's five dimensions were explored through univariate and multivariate analyses.
RESULTS
From 1512 eligible patients, 365 were included. Optimal adherence to overall treatment (≥90%) was observed in 61%, 62%, and 65% of patients in the first, second, and third years, respectively. Education level (high school diploma or higher: OR = 3.24, 95% CI [1.49; 7.36]) and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Depression scores 8-10: OR = 1.90, 95% CI [1.05; 3.44]) were significantly associated with suboptimal adherence.
CONCLUSIONS
Overall adherence to secondary prevention medications was fairly good. Having an initial diagnosis of transient ischemic attack, a high level of education, or depression was associated with increased odds of suboptimal adherence, while having a history of heart rhythm disorder was associated with lower odds.

Objective To assess the influences of self-and interviewer-administered methods on the scores of anxiety and depression questionnaires among the patients with sports injuries.Methods A total of 532 participants with sports injuries treated in the Sports Medicine Center of West China Hospital,Sichuan University from November 2022 to May 2023 were included.They were randomly assigned to either the interviewer-administered group (=270) or the self-administered group (=262) to complete the generalized anxiety disorder (GAD-7) and the patient health questionnaire (PHQ-9) scales.The total scores and prevalence rates of anxiety and depression were compared between the two groups.Results There was no statistically significant difference in gender,occupation,or surgical site between the two groups (all >0.05).The self-administered group had higher scores of GAD-7 and PHQ-9 scales than the interviewer-administered group (<0.001,<0.001).A greater proportion of participants in the self-administered group than in the interview-administered group met the criteria for mild to moderate anxiety and depression (<0.001,=0.002).The prevalence rates of moderate to severe anxiety (GAD-7≥10) and depression (PHQ-9≥10) showed no statistically significant difference between the two groups (=0.761,=0.086).Conclusion This study demonstrates that the participants in the self-administered group are more likely to report mild to moderate symptoms of anxiety and depression than those in the interviewer-administered group.

Adolescent health research with biomarker data collection is limited due to difficulties in recruiting and engaging this age group. Thus, successful recruitment, engagement, and retention of adolescents in translational research are necessary to elucidate factors influencing mental and physical health conditions, uncover novel biomarkers, and expand prevention and treatment options. This paper describes strategies for effective recruitment and retention of adolescents in a research study, using a project examining depressive symptoms and the microbiome to illustrate these approaches. This cross-sectional study collected electronic self-reported survey data and self-collected biospecimens (stool and salivary samples) from adolescents 13-19 years old. All but two participants completed the questionnaires, with few missing responses. 94% provided at least one salivary sample and 89% supplied a stool sample. Participants were able to adhere to the study instructions. Using a participant-centered approach, our study successfully recruited and engaged the targeted 90 participants in self-collection of electronic survey data and biospecimens. Successful strategies of recruitment and retention included: 1) on-site clinic recruitment by research team, 2) active involvement of parents as appropriate, 3) use of electronic surveys and self-collection of biospecimens to foster control and ease of participation while addressing privacy concerns, 4) noninvasive collection of data on biospecimen, 5) frequent texting to communicate with participants, 6) flexibility in the pickup and transferring of biospecimens to accommodate adolescent schedules, 7) developmentally appropriate research, 8) participant reimbursement, and 9) sensitivity toward discussing stool sample materials. As a result of these strategies, adolescent participation in the research proved feasible.

Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) is the term used to describe the decline in the physical, cognitive, and/or mental condition of individuals who have been discharged from the intensive care unit (ICU). This complication could result in a significant reduction in quality of life, with some patients experiencing symptoms of prolonged weakness, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Intensive care advancement over the years has resulted in an increase in ICU survival rates and a proportional increase in PICS, creating a need for more in-depth research into the prevention and management of the disease. Hence, this study aims to examine the present body of literature on PICS, encompassing its underlying physiological processes and elements that contribute to its development, methods for evaluating and diagnosing the condition, current treatment choices as well as potential new approaches, and the constraints in managing PICS and the necessity for further investigation. In this article, studies were compiled from several databases, including, but not limited to, Google Scholar, PubMed, and Cochrane Library. These studies were reviewed, and their data were used to highlight important aspects regarding the efficacy of current PICS screening tools, the optimization and limitations of both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment methods, and the feasibility and safety of emerging treatments and technologies. The major conclusions of this review were centered around the need for multidisciplinary management of PICS. From pharmacological management using analgesia to non-pharmacological management using early mobilization and exercise therapy, the effective treatment of PICS requires a multifaceted approach. Patient follow-up and its importance were touched upon, including strategies and policies to bolster proper follow-up, thereby increasing favorable outcomes. Lastly, the importance of family involvement and the increased need for research into this topic were highlighted.

BACKGROUND
The COVID-19 pandemic has had tremendous implications for billions of adolescents worldwide due to school closures, forcing students to embrace internet usage for daily tasks. Uncontrolled use of the internet among adolescents makes them vulnerable to internet addiction (IA). This study aims to determine the prevalence of IA among adolescents and assess its association with sociodemographic factors, smartphone use, and psychological distress during the pandemic.
METHOD
A cross-sectional self-administered online survey was conducted among students aged 13-17 from May 15, 2021, until May 30, 2021, using the Malay version of the Internet Addiction Test (MVIAT), the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21), and the Coronavirus Impacts Questionnaires, as well as a sociodemographic information form. The data was analyzed with IBM SPSS Statistics version 23.
RESULTS
A total of 420 adolescents participated in the survey. The majority of them (70.7%) were female, with a mean age of 15.47 years (±1.49 years old). About 45.5% of the respondents were classified as internet addicted users. The Chi-square test analysis showed that age ( = 0.002), smartphone usage ( = 0.010), rate of midnight use ( < 0.001), frequency ( < 0.001), duration ( < 0.001) of device usage, and presence of depression, anxiety, and stress (p < 0.001) were all significantly associated with IA. Multiple logistic regression showed age (aOR = 1.16, 95% CI [1.00-1.35], = 0.048), smartphone usage (aOR =3.52, 95% CI [1.43-8.67], = 0.006), mild or moderate depression (aOR = 2.43, 95% CI [1.36-4.34], = 0.003), severe or extremely severe stress (aOR = 6.41, 95% CI [2.18-18.82], = 0.001) were significantly related to IA.
CONCLUSIONS
Late adolescence, the use of smartphones, and the presence of psychological distress like depression, and stress were potentially associated with IA. Wise use of smartphones and early identification of any psychological distress among adolescents are warranted, especially during the pandemic.

BACKGROUND
Overweight and obesity now affect more than a third of the world's population. They are strongly associated with somatic diseases, in particular increasing the risk of many metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, but also with mental disorders. In particular, there is a strong association between obesity and depression. As a result, more attention is paid to the neurobiological, behavioural, and psychological mechanisms involved in eating. One of these is food addiction (FA). Research comparing lifestyle elements, physical and mental health problems of excess body weight and individuals with FA is limited and has focused on younger people, mainly students. There is also a lack of studies that relate actual metabolic parameters to FA. To better understand the problem of FA also in older adults, it is important to understand the specific relationships between these variables.
METHODS
A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 172 adults with overweight and obesity (82% female) aged 23-85 years. The mean age of all subjects was = 59.97 years ( = 11.93), the mean BMI was = 32.05 kg/m ( = 4.84), and the mean body fat was = 39.12% ( = 6.48). The following questionnaires were used: Food Frequency Questionnaire-6 (FFQ-6), Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), Three Factor Eating Questionnaire-R18 (TFEQ-R18), Yale Food Addiction Scale 2. 0 (YFAS 2.0), Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). Body composition, anthropometry, fasting glucose, lipid profile, and blood pressure were measured.
RESULTS
A total of 22.7% of participants with overweight and obesity had symptoms of depression according to the SDS, and 18.6% met the criteria for FA according to YFAS 2.0. FA was statistically significantly more common among people up to 50 years. BMI, body fat mass, diastolic blood pressure and sedentary behaviour were statistically significantly higher in people with FA symptoms. Those who were sedentary for 301-450 min per day were significantly more likely to have depressive symptoms, and those who were sedentary for more than 450 min per day were significantly more likely to have FA symptoms.
CONCLUSIONS
Our findings complement the current literature on FA, particularly in older adults and metabolic parameters, and suggest further research directions. Although our cross-sectional study design does not allow causal interpretations, increasing physical activity appears to be particularly important in the management of people with overweight or obesity and FA. This may be even more important than for people with depression alone, but future research is needed to explore these relationships further.

BACKGROUND
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) with rising prevalence worldwide. DM increases the risk for depression as the prevalence of depression has been reported to be three times more in diabetics than in non-diabetics. Though depressive symptoms are more common in diabetes, they are not usually recognized and treated. Little is known about the predictors of depression in this group of people, especially among the Nigerian population. This study explored the sociodemographic factors associated with depression in patients with type 2 DM without prior psychiatric history.
METHODOLOGY
This was a cross-sectional study conducted among two hundred and sixty-four patients using structured questionnaires. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 20. Chi-square tests were performed to compare associations between categorical variables. A probability (p) value less than 0.05 was taken as statistically significant.
RESULTS
Females [176 (66%)] were three times more than males [88 (33.3%)] respectively. The prevalence of depression was 49.2%. Level of education (p= 0.008), occupation (p= 0.014), and social class (p= 0.040) were significantly associated with depression among the respondents. Depression was higher among the older age group, females, and the widowed.
CONCLUSION
Females and older adults were more affected by depression. The predictors of depression were level of education, occupation, and social class. Thus, there is a need to screen those who have been diagnosed with T2DM for depression, especially females and older adult patients.
