The study aimed to analyze the relationship between serum adiponectin concentration, Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence, and Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet adherence in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). Thirty-three SCI patients (21 males, 12 females; median age: 33 years; range, 18 to 65 years) and 33 age-, sex-, and body mass index-matched healthy controls (21 males, 12 females; median age: 33 years; range, 18 to 64 years) were included in this cross-sectional study between March 2021 and March 2022. Serum adiponectin concentrations of all participants were measured. Body weight, height, and neck, hip, waist, and mid-upper arm circumferences were measured. Twenty-four-hour dietary records were obtained by the researchers for evaluation of the nutritional status. The DASH diet score and MD score were measured for each participant. Most of the cases of SCI were due to motor vehicle collisions (n=12, 36.4%) and complete paraplegic. Mid-upper arm circumference, waist circumference, hip circumference, and neck circumference of the patient group were significantly higher than the control group (p=0.020, p=0.002, p=0.042, and p<0.001, respectively). Mediterranean diet scores and DASH diet scores of the patient group were significantly higher than the control group (p<0.001 and p=0.031, respectively). Serum adiponectin concentration of patients was significantly higher than the control group (p=0.049). No correlation was detected between adiponectin concentration, MD score, and DASH diet score in both groups. Although correlation analysis in the current research did not show significant relation between nutrition and adiponectin concentrations, nutrition of patients with SCI, as demonstrated by higher adherence to MD and DASH, may have provided positive effects on adiponectin concentrations. Future studies focused on the effect of a healthy diet intervention on serum adiponectin concentration is warranted.

BACKGROUND
Excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) is related to increased offspring fat accrual, and increased fat mass (FM) is related to obesity development. Prenatal DHA supplementation has been linked to lower levels of offspring FM; however, conflicting data exist.
OBJECTIVES
This study aimed to determine if there is a protective effect of prenatal DHA supplementation on offspring fat accrual and adipose tissue deposition at 24 mo in offspring born to females who gain excessive weight compared with nonexcessive weight during pregnancy. We also explored if the effect of DHA dose on FM differed by offspring sex.
METHODS
Infants born to females who participated in the Assessment of DHA on Reducing Early Preterm Birth randomized controlled trial (ADORE) were recruited. In ADORE, females were randomly assigned to either a high or low prenatal DHA supplement. Offspring body composition and adipose tissue distribution were measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). GWG was categorized as excessive or not excessive based on clinical guidelines.
RESULTS
For total FM, there was a significant main effect for the DHA dose ( = 0.03); however, the dose by GWG status was nonsignificant ( = 0.44). Therefore, a higher prenatal DHA dose was related to greater offspring FM (622.9 g greater) and unrelated to GWG status. When investigating a DHA dose by sex effect, a significant main effect for DHA dose ( = 0.01) was detected for central FM. However, no interaction was detected ( = 0.98), meaning that both boys and girls had greater central FM if their mother was assigned to the higher DHA dose.
CONCLUSIONS
Greater prenatal DHA supplementation was associated with greater offspring FM and adipose tissue distribution at 24 mo. It will be important to understand if these effects persist into childhood.This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03310983.

The emerging predictors of childhood undernutrition include household food insecurity (HFI) and inadequate diet diversity (DD). Geographical, socio-cultural, economic, and demographic factors contribute to HFI. Earlier, HFI was often considered an outcome of hunger and poverty leading to undernutrition. The increasing availability of data related to childhood DD and its direct association with undernutrition indicates that DD could mediate the relationship between HFI and undernutrition. This narrative review examined the association of HFI and/or DD with undernutrition in children younger than 5 years in the Indian subcontinent; and the current programmes and policies. The current evidence showed a possible association between HFI and DD either independently or together with childhood undernutrition. Until now, nutrition-specific interventions to address moderate and severe forms of undernutrition were focused, with a limited attention on nutrition-sensitive approaches to improve HFI and DD. Interventions which improve HFI and DD may be included in the existing programmes and would help address the undernutrition in children younger than 5 years.

The study highlighted the potential of sesame seed coat (SSC), typically discarded during sesame paste processing, as a valuable resource for valorization through extracting bioactive compounds. It examined the phenolic composition and antioxidant activity of SSC, and evaluated its antibacterial properties against foodborne pathogens such as O157:H7, and Typhimurium. Additionally, SSC underwent nanoemulsion coating, analyzed using dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy, to enhance its application as a natural preservative. The research specifically focused on incorporating SSC nanoemulsion into milk to determine its effectiveness as a preservative. SSC demonstrated considerable antioxidant activity and phenolic content, with catechin identified as the predominant polyphenol. GC-MS analysis revealed seven major compounds, led by oleic acid. Notably, SSC effectively inhibited in broth at 100 mg/ml. The application of SSC and its nanoemulsion resulted in changes to bacterial morphology and a significant reduction in bacterial counts in milk, highlighting its potential as an effective natural antibacterial agent. The findings of this study highlight the potential use of SSC as a valuable by-product in the food industry, with significant implications for food preservation.

Dietary glycemic index and glycemic load predict longitudinal change in glycemic and cardio-metabolic biomarkers among old diabetic adults living in a resource-poor country.
This study aims to investigate longitudinal associations between the dietary glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) and changes in glycemic and cardio-metabolic outcomes. A 28-month retrospective cohort study included 110 Vietnamese diabetic patients, collecting their dietary GI and GL values along with blood biochemical data from baseline 24-h dietary recall and medical records. Latent class growth modelling identified three distinct HbA1c trajectories during the follow-up period, with 51% of patients achieving good glycemic control. The adjusted linear mixed-effect model showed that 1 unit increase in logarithms in dietary GL was associated with a 0.14% increase in the log-HbA1c. Among poorly controlled diabetic patients, baseline GL values were positively correlated with increases in HbA1c; GI showed effects on changes in fasting plasma glucose and the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index. No significant association was observed in patients with good glycemic control.

This study investigated the in vitro bioaccessibility of aluminum, copper, iron, manganese, lead, selenium, and zinc in three important species of farmed insects: the yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor), the house cricket (Acheta domesticus) and the migratory locust (Locusta migratoria). Results show that all three insect species constitute excellent sources of essential elements (Fe, Cu and Zn) for the human diet, contributing to the recommended dietary allowance, i.e., 10%, 50%, and 92%, respectively. A higher accumulation of Se (≥1.4 mg Se/kg) was observed with increasing exposure concentration in A. domesticus, showing the possibility of using insects as a supplements for this element. The presence of Al and Fe nanoparticles was confirmed in all three species using single particle-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and transmission electron microscopy. The results also indicate that Fe bioaccessibility declines with increasing Fe-nanoparticle concentration. These findings contribute to increase the nutritional and toxicological insights of farmed insects.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS
There has been a growing emphasis on dietary therapies for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Furthermore, there has been an evolving evidence base for the low fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAP) diet, gluten-free diet (GFD), and lactose-free diet. This study examines the dietary approaches employed and the factors influencing dietetic decision-making for IBS interventions.
METHODS
Participants, including registered dietitians and nutritionists, were recruited from diverse healthcare settings at the point of registration for the 4th Sheffield National Dietetic Gastroenterology Symposium, 2023. A 15-question online survey investigated the practices of dietitians and nutritionists in managing IBS patients, covering dietary approaches, decision-making factors, and patient education. The evidence base for different dietary interventions was provided and a follow-up survey assessed symposium attendees, views on current IBS dietary practices.
RESULTS
Out of 731 respondents, primarily registered dietitians (93%) and females (93%), 54% spent 10-50% of clinic time on IBS. Respondents noted that a GFD (34%), low lactose (32%), and traditional dietary advice (TDA) (18%) were the most frequently used dietary interventions that patients try before seeking professional advice. Delegates were asked to rank their dietary intervention preferences pre- and post-meeting (after the evidence base had been presented): TDA pre-meeting 75% versus post-meeting 87% (p=0.04), fibre modification 59% versus 6% (p<0.0001), low FODMAP 25% versus 10% (p=0.0001), low lactose 12% versus 62% (p<0.0001) and GFD 6% to 23% (p<0.0001).
CONCLUSIONS
TDA remains the choice of diet for dietitians. After our educational event, the use of low-lactose and gluten-free diet significantly increased. Factors influencing the decision-making process were based on patient acceptability, counselling time, supporting evidence base and dietary triggers.

BACKGROUND
Poor dietary quality is a risk factor for diet-related chronic disease and suboptimal nutritional patterns often begin early in the life course. While the dietary intakes of young children, adolescents, and middle-aged and older adults are well established, much less is known about emerging adults, who represent a unique timepoint in life, as they are undergoing significant changes in food environments, autonomy, finances, and caregiver and parental involvement.
OBJECTIVE
To examine dietary quality, as assessed via the Healthy Eating Index (HEI), by demographic, socioeconomic, and health-related characteristics among U.S. emerging adults (18-23y) who participated in the 2015-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).
METHODS
NHANES data were collected via a household interview and 2 24-hour dietary recalls (24HR). Usual dietary intakes from the 24HRs were approximated using the multivariate National Cancer Institute Method to compute mean HEI-2015 overall and component scores (range 0-100, higher scores indicating higher dietary quality).
RESULTS
Overall dietary quality among U.S. emerging adults [HEI-2015: 50.3±1.3] was significantly lower than other U.S. adults (≥24y) [HEI-2015: 56.3±0.5; p<0.0001], with differences primarily driven by lower intakes of whole fruit, vegetables, and whole grains, and higher intakes of sodium, refined grains, and saturated fat. Few differences in HEI-2015 scores were noted across population subgroups by sex, food security, family income, and food assistance program participation, except for added sugar; intakes of added sugar were significantly higher among women, food insecure, and food assistance program participants as compared to their counterparts, respectively.
CONCLUSIONS
Dietary quality is poor among U.S. emerging adults and persists across all population subgroups, suggesting a significant need for tailored public health interventions to improve dietary quality among this population. Future research investigating to what extent emerging adults prioritize healthful behaviors and exploring other indicators for identifying nutritionally vulnerable subgroups may be impactful for identifying disparities among this life stage.

Nanosilver (AgNPs) is popular nanomaterials used in food industry that makes gastrointestinal tract an essential route of its uptake. The aim of the presented study was to assess the effects of intragastric exposure to AgNPs on redox balance and steroid receptors in the testes of adult Fisher 344 rats. The animals were exposed to 20 nm AgNPs (30 mg/kg bw/day, by gavage) for 7 and 28 days compared to saline (control groups). It was demonstrated that 7-day AgNPs administration resulted in increased level of total antioxidant status (TAS), glutathione reductase (GR) activity, lower superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), decreased glutathione (GSH) level and GSH/GSSG ratio, as well as higher estrogen receptor (ESR2) and aromatase (Aro) protein expression in Leydig cells compared to the 28-day AgNPs esposure. The longer-time effects of AgNPs exposition were associated with increased lipid hydroperoxidation (LOOHs) and decreased SOD activity and androgen receptor protein level. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated the adverse gastrointestinally-mediated AgNPs effects in male gonads. In particular, the short-term AgNPs exposure impaired antioxidant defence with concurrent effects on the stimulation of estrogen signaling, while the sub-chronic AgNPs exposition revealed the increased testicle oxidative stress that attenuated androgens signaling.

PURPOSE
To evaluate the prognostic value of C-reactive protein (CRP), albumin, CRP/albumin ratio (CAR), and modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) at different thresholds in patients with advanced cancer in palliative care.
METHODS
Prospective cohort study with patients evaluated at a palliative care unit in Brazil between July 2016 and March 2020. We included patients ≥ 20 years old, both sexes, able to provide the necessary information or accompanied by someone able to do so, and Karnofsky Performance Status ≥ 30 %. The exclusion criteria were the absence of laboratory data and previous diagnosis of autoimmune and infectious diseases. The thresholds analyzed were: CRP < 5 vs. 5-10 vs. > 10 mg/L, albumin < 2.4 vs. 2.4-2.9 vs. 3.0-3.5 vs. > 3.5 g/dL; CAR <1.2 vs. 1.2-2.0 vs. > 2.0, and mGPS equal to 0 vs. 1 vs. 2. Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression models (with hazard ratios [HR] and 95% confidence interval [CI]) were used to evaluate prognostic value, and the concordance statistic (C-statistic) was used to evaluate the predictive accuracy of these thresholds to predict death within 90 days.
RESULTS
A total of 1,877 patients were included. Median overall survival was 51 (19;124) days and decreased in line with the deterioration of the inflammatory biomarkers. According to the Cox regression models, HR increased as the thresholds worsened (CRP: 1.74 [95% CI, 1.50-2.02] to 2.30 [95% CI, 2.00-2.64]; albumin: 1.77 [95% CI, 1.52-2.07] to 2.60 [95% CI, 2.15-3.14]; CAR: 1.47 [95% CI, 1.21-1.77] to 2.35 [95% CI, 2.05-2.69]; mGPS: 1.78 [95% CI, 1.40-2.23] to 1.89 [95% CI, 1.65-2.15]). All the inflammatory biomarkers evaluated showed discriminatory accuracy for predicting death (C-statistic >0.70), with CAR as the best parameter (C-statistic: 0.80).
CONCLUSION
Our results suggest that CRP, albumin, CAR, and mGPS can be used as clinically meaningful biomarkers to stratify patients with advanced cancer in palliative care according to the severity of these indicators.
