Elucidating the role of rice straw biochar in modulating Helianthus annuus L. antioxidants, secondary metabolites and soil post-harvest characteristics in different types of microplastics.
The emergence of microplastics (MPs) as pollutants in agricultural soils is increasingly alarming, presenting significant threats to soil ecosystems. Given the widespread contamination of ecosystems by various types of MPs, including polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyethylene (PE), it is crucial to understand their effects on agricultural productivity. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of different types of MPs (PS, PVC, and PE) on various aspects of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) growth with the addition of rice straw biochar (RSB). This study aimed to examine plant growth and biomass, photosynthetic pigments and gas exchange characteristics, oxidative stress indicators, and the response of various antioxidants (enzymatic and non-enzymatic) and their specific gene expression, proline metabolism, the AsA-GSH cycle, cellular fractionation in the plants and post-harvest soil properties. The research outcomes indicated that elevated levels of different types of MPs in the soil notably reduced plant growth and biomass, photosynthetic pigments, and gas exchange attributes. Different types of MPs also induced oxidative stress, which caused an increase in various enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant compounds, gene expression and sugar content; notably, a significant increase in proline metabolism, AsA-GSH cycle, and pigmentation of cellular components was also observed. Favorably, the addition of RSB significantly increased plant growth and biomass, gas exchange characteristics, enzymatic and non-enzymatic compounds, and relevant gene expression while decreasing oxidative stress. In addition, RSB amendment decreased proline metabolism and AsA-GSH cycle in H. annuus plants, thereby enhancing cellular fractionation and improving post-harvest soil properties. These results open new avenues for sustainable agriculture practices and show great potential for resolving the urgent issues caused by microplastic contamination in agricultural soils.

Microplastic has emerged as a global threat owing to its chronic ubiquity and persistence. Microplastics' small size expedites their ingestion at each trophic level causing biomagnification and bioaccumulation, which has raised public concerns. The present study isolated, quantified and characterized the abundance, shape, size, color, and chemical composition of the microplastics from water and sediments of the Hirakud Reservoir through a scanning electron microscope and FTIR. The ecological risk associated with the microplastics was assessed using the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) method to derive the Predicted No-Effect Concentration (PNEC) value and risk quotient (RQ). The abundance of microplastics in the surface water and sediments of the Hirakud Reservoir was estimated at 82-89 particles/L and 159-163 particles/kg, respectively. Fiber-shaped microplastics dominated both surface water (46.21%) and sediment samples (44.86%). Small-sized microplastics (53-300 μm) prevailed in all samples. Color delineation exhibited an abundance of transparent microplastics. Chemical characterization indicated the dominance of polypropylene (38%), followed by high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, and polystyrene. The calculated PNEC value was 3,954 particles/m, and the RQ was estimated to be 0.02073-0.04122 indicating negligible ecological risk to freshwater species in all the sampling sites.

Protein cages are promising tools for the controlled delivery of therapeutics and imaging agents when endowed with programmable disassembly strategies. Here, we produced hybrid nanocomposites made of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs), designed to disrupt the viral protein cages using magnetically induced release of heat. We studied the effects of this magnetic hyperthermia on the programmable viral protein capsid disassembly using (1) elongated nanocomposites of TMV coated heterogeneously with magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (TMV@IONPs) and (2) spherical nanocomposites of polystyrene (PS) on which we deposited presynthesized IONPs and TMV via layer-by-layer self-assembly (PS@IONPs/TMV). Notably, we found that the extent of the disassembly of the protein cages is contingent upon the specific absorption rate (SAR) of the magnetic nanoparticles, that is, the heating efficiency, and the relative position of the protein cage within the nanocomposite concerning the heating sources. This implies that the spatial arrangement of components within the hybrid nanostructure has a significant impact on the disassembly process. Understanding and optimizing this relationship will contribute to the critical spatiotemporal control for targeted drug and gene delivery using protein cages.

Room temperature synthesis of nanocomposite thin films with embedded CsAgInBiCl lead-free double perovskite nanocrystals with long-term water stability, wide range pH tolerance, and high quantum yield.
The synthesis of CsAgInBiCl nanocrystals was achieved at room temperature under ambient conditions using the ligand-assisted reprecipitation (LARP) method. The synthesized NCs exhibit bright orange emission when excited at 375 nm and have broad photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra with a maximum of 630 nm. A photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 36% was observed in these NCs without any polymer coatings. Polystyrene (PS), and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were used to enhance the water stability and PLQY values up to 64%. Nanocomposite thin films with these polymer encapsulations exhibit good thermal stability up to at least 353 K and high quantum yields. PMMA-coated NCs showed long-term water stability for at least 4 months. The composites remain photostable when in contact with water for at least 120 min under continuous 365 nm UV illumination at 1 mW cm. Due to their excellent optical properties, aqueous stability, and wide range pH tolerance, these nanocomposite thin films could be employed for a variety of biological applications.

Clay minerals have different negative effects on the froth flotation process such as low adsorption of collectors on valuable minerals, increased pulp viscosity, and the reduction in recovery and grade concentrates of copper sulfides. This study aims to evaluate the use of polystyrene-based nanoparticles (NPs) for the froth flotation of chalcopyrite and their ability to mitigate the negative effect of montmorillonite on the recovery of this sulfide. The experimental stage consisted of preparing a type of polystyrene-based nanoparticle (St-CTAB-VI), which was analyzed by dynamic night scattering (DLS) to establish its hydrodynamic size. Then, the effect of NPs on chalcopyrite's angle's in the presence and absence of montmorillonite (15%) was evaluated and compared with the contact angle achieved using potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and a mixture of PAX and NPs. In addition, zeta potential measurements were carried out to investigate the interactions between the chalcopyrite and the montmorillonite or the NPs under fixed concentrations and microflotation tests were performed employing different times to evaluate the chalcopyrite recovery in the presence of montmorillonite, using NPs and mixtures with PAX. Finally, turbidity analysis as a function of time was performed to evaluate the occurrence of sedimentation and flocculation phenomena in suspensions of 15% montmorillonite in the presence and absence of chalcopyrite, nanoparticles, and mixtures of NPs and PAX. The results indicated that the mixture of NPs and PAX contributed to increasing the contact angle of chalcopyrite in the presence of montmorillonite. This can be associated with the presence of molecular and nanometric collectors that generated a higher hydrophobicity on the chalcopyrite particles, contributing to reducing the presence of clay minerals on the mineral surface. In addition, the mixture of NPs and PAX promoted the generation of nanoparticles on the sulfide mineral surface, which helps to detach the slime and facilitate the bubble/mineral attachment step during flotation.

A degradation mechanism of polystyrene (PS) in mealworms reared on expanded PS (EPS) was investigated by its decrease in molecular weight and change in chemical structure. A 33% decrease in molecular weight was observed for the digested PS in the frass after 1 week of feeding to mealworms. The FT-IR and py-GC/MS spectra of the digested PS showed radical oxidative reactions taking place in the mealworm body. The presence of hydroperoxide, alcohol and phenol groups was confirmed, and dimer fragments of styrene with quinone and phenol groups were obtained. The decrease in molecular weight and the alternation of benzene rings indicated that autoxidation and quinonization via phenolic intermediates occurred simultaneously in the mealworm body. The survival rate of mealworms reared on EPS was higher than that of starved worms, indicating that EPS was a nutrient source. However, no weight gain was observed in mealworms fed EPS alone. Comparison with the mixed diets with bran or urethane foams (PU) indicated that protein, phosphorus and magnesium components absent from EPS were required for mealworm growth.

Curvature-Insensitive Transparent Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrate Based on Large-Area Ag Nanoparticle-Coated Wrinkled Polystyrene/Polydimethylsiloxane Film for Reliable In Situ Detection.
Flexible and transparent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates have attracted considerable attention for their ability to enable the direct in situ detection of analytes on curved surfaces. However, the curvature of an object can impact the signal enhancement of SERS during the measurement process. Herein, we propose a simple approach for fabricating a curvature-insensitive transparent SERS substrate by depositing silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) onto a large-area wrinkled polystyrene/polydimethylsiloxane (Ag NP@W-PS/PDMS) bilayer film. Using rhodamine 6G (R6G) as a probe molecule, the optimized Ag NP@W-PS/PDMS film demonstrates a high analytical enhancement factor (AEF) of 4.83 × 10, excellent uniformity (RSD = 7.85%) and reproducibility (RSD = 3.09%), as well as superior mechanical flexibility. Additionally, in situ measurements of malachite green (MG) on objects with diverse curvatures, including fish, apple, and blueberry, are conducted using a portable Raman system, revealing a consistent SERS enhancement. Furthermore, a robust linear relationship (R ≥ 0.990) between Raman intensity and the logarithmic concentration of MG detected from these objects is achieved. These results demonstrate the tremendous potential of the developed curvature-insensitive SERS substrate as a point-of-care testing (POCT) platform for identifying analytes on irregular objects.

Future industrial applications of microparticle fractionation with deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) devices are hindered by exceedingly low throughput rates. To enable the necessary high-volume flows, high flow velocities as well as high aspect ratios in DLD devices have to be investigated. However, no experimental studies have yet been conducted on the fractionation of bi-disperse suspensions containing particles below 10 µm with DLD at a Reynolds number (Re) above 60. Furthermore, devices with an aspect ratio of more than 4:1, which require advanced microfabrication, are not known in the DLD literature. Therefore, we developed a suitable process with deep reactive ion etching of silicon and anodic bonding of a glass lid to create pressure-resistant arrays. With a depth of 120 µm and a gap of 23 µm between posts, a high aspect ratio of 6:1 was realized, and devices were investigated using simulations and fractionation experiments. With the two-segmented array of 3° and 7° row shifts, critical diameters of 8 µm and 12 µm were calculated for low Re conditions, but it was already known that vortices behind the posts can shift these values to lower critical diameters. Suspensions with polystyrene particles in different combinations were injected with an overall flow rate of up to 15 mL/min, corresponding to Re values of up to 90. Suspensions containing particle combinations of 2 µm with 10 µm as well as 5 µm with 10 µm were successfully fractionated, even at the highest flow rate. Under these conditions, a slight widening of the displacement position was observed, but there was no further reduction in the critical size as it was for Re = 60. With an unprecedented fractionation throughput of nearly 1 L per hour, entirely new applications are being developed for chemical, pharmaceutical, and recycling technologies.

Certain ocular conditions result from the non-physiological presence of intraocular particles, leading to visual impairment and potential long-term damage. This happens when the normally clear aqueous humor becomes less transparent, thus blocking the visual axis and by intraocular pressure elevation due to blockage of the trabecular meshwork, as seen in secondary open-angle glaucoma (SOAG). Some of these "particle-related pathologies" acquire ocular conditions like pigment dispersion syndrome, pseodoexfoliation and uveitis. Others are trauma-related, such as blood cell accumulation in hyphema. While medical and surgical treatments exist for SOAG, there is a notable absence of effective preventive measures. Consequently, the prevailing clinical approach predominantly adopts a "wait and see" strategy, wherein the focus lies on managing secondary complications and offers no treatment options for particulate matter disposal. We developed a new technique utilizing standing acoustic waves to trap and direct intraocular particles. By employing acoustic trapping at nodal regions and controlled movement of the acoustic transducer, we successfully directed these particles to specific locations within the angle. Here, we demonstrate control and movement of polystyrene (PS) particles to specific locations within an in vitro eye model, as well as blood cells in porcine eyes (ex vivo). The removal of particles from certain areas can facilitate the outflow of aqueous humor (AH) and help maintain optimal intraocular pressure (IOP) levels, resulting in a non-invasive tool for preventing secondary glaucoma. Furthermore, by controlling the location of trapped particles we can hasten the clearance of the AH and improve visual acuity and quality more effectively. This study represents a significant step towards the practical application of our technique in clinical use.

This research is aimed at studying the properties of polymer anticorrosion coatings based on ED-20 resin widely used in practice and industrial wastes. In this work, three basic types of nanoscale nanofillers were chosen: dispersed particles-microsilica, microspheres obtained at Kazakh enterprises, and carbon nanotubes. Physicochemical research methods were used in the research: a laser analyzer for studying the dispersibility of industrial waste and spectrometric research methods. The properties of materials were investigated by standardized methods. The obtained results show that the introduction of microsilica and microspheres obtained at Kazakhstani enterprises, used as additives, improves both the physical and mechanical properties of epoxy composites compared to the standard (control) material. The results of experiments have shown that the optimal content of additives of microsilica and microspheres provides an improvement in the physical and mechanical properties of epoxy composites in comparison with the standard (control) material. Studies have shown that the introduction of microspheres into ED-20 polymer increases impact toughness. The introduction of microsilica into the matrix contributes to the increase of elastic modulus. Experimental studies of optical properties of samples of carbon composite polymer films based on polystyrene (PS) with additives of carbon nanotubes C and C and multilayer carbon nanotubes were also carried out. The experimental results obtained for the optical properties of polymer composites based on basic polymers from solid waste and carbon nanotubes showed that the optical properties of polymer composites undergo noticeable changes.
