In this study, we address the mate selection problem in the hybridization stage of a breeding pipeline, which constitutes the multi-objective breeding goal key to the performance of a variety development program. The solution framework we formulate seeks to ensure that individuals with the most desirable genomic characteristics are selected to cross in order to maximize the likelihood of the inheritance of desirable genetic materials to the progeny. Unlike approaches that use phenotypic values for parental selection and evaluate individuals separately, we use a criterion that relies on the genetic architecture of traits and evaluates combinations of genomic information of the pairs of individuals. We introduce the expected cross value (ECV) criterion that measures the expected number of desirable alleles for gametes produced by pairs of individuals sampled from a population of potential parents. We use the ECV criterion to develop an integer linear programming formulation for the parental selection problem. The formulation is capable of controlling the inbreeding level between selected mates. We evaluate the approach or two applications: (i) improving multiple target traits simultaneously, and (ii) finding a multi-parental solution to design crossing blocks. We evaluate the performance of the ECV criterion using a simulation study. Finally, we discuss how the ECV criterion and the proposed integer linear programming techniques can be applied to improve breeding efficiency while maintaining genetic diversity in a breeding program.

A Cu-6at%Ag cast alloy was deformed by means of high-pressure torsion to different applied strain levels until a steady-state regime is reached. The continuous structural refinement is attended by the successive dissolution of the Ag precipitates in the Cu matrix. The results show that the Ag regions need to fall below a phase size of ~ 5 nm to fully dissolve. Atomistic calculations indicate that the final dissolution can be explained based on the enthalpy difference between the solid solution and layered systems which are in between the coherent and semi-coherent structure. These findings are supported by detailed microstructural investigations.

Review
Precision nutrition requires precise tools to monitor dietary habits. Yet current dietary assessment instruments are subjective, limiting our understanding of the causal relationships between diet and health. Biomarkers of food intake (BFIs) hold promise to increase the objectivity and accuracy of dietary assessment, enabling adjustment for compliance and misreporting. Here, we update current concepts and provide a comprehensive overview of BFIs measured in urine and blood. We rank BFIs based on a four-level utility scale to guide selection and identify combinations of BFIs that specifically reflect complex food intakes, making them applicable as dietary instruments. We discuss the main challenges in biomarker development and illustrate key solutions for the application of BFIs in human studies, highlighting different strategies for selecting and combining BFIs to support specific study designs. Finally, we present a roadmap for BFI development and implementation to leverage current knowledge and enable precision in nutrition research.

Due to the limited reserves of uranium, the abundance of thorium compared to it and other advantages, the development of the thorium fuel cycle is of interest in different countries. The optimization of thorium extraction from a feed solution produced by Saghand ore with bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272) on a laboratory scale was evaluated by response surface method. The operating variables include Cyanex 272 concentration of 0.001 to 0.2 mol/L, pH of 0 to 2, equilibrium time of 5 to 60 min and aqueous to organic phase ratio of 0.5 to 2.5 were conducted. The value of R = 0.9695 and an error of less than 4% indicate the validity of the model. Therefore, the model is in good agreement with the experimental results. It can be said that there are significant interactions between operational parameters, which vindicate different feedbacks of the system in different operational conditions. The results showed that the 4 mol/L sulfuric acid was a suitable agent for recovering thorium ions from the loaded organic phase. In optimum conditions, the thorium purity percentage and thorium stripping efficiency were obtained 98.99 and 94.12%, respectively.

As the node positioning of underwater wireless sensor networks is easily affected by tidal motion, ocean current motion and multipath effect, the node positioning accuracy is low. In order to better improve the positioning accuracy of moving nodes of underwater wireless sensor networks, a method of locating mobile nodes of underwater wireless sensor based on tidal motion model is proposed. Firstly, the Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) localization optimized by niche genetic algorithm is used to initialize each node. The integration of niche technology can effectively find multiple excellent solutions in the solution space, thus providing more abundant solution choices. This algorithm has excellent performance in multi-modal optimization problems, and can avoid the algorithm falling into local optimal solutions, so as to obtain more comprehensive optimization results. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has better positioning accuracy than the traditional Chan algorithm and Taylor algorithm. Then, each node is updated in real time by the optimized tidal movement model formula predicted by Kalman filter algorithm. The prediction algorithm is used to compare the real-time predicted update position of the node with the actual position. The positioning distance error of the prediction algorithm is also enough to meet the practical application requirements.

To treat hypovolemic shock, fluid infusion or blood transfusion is essential to address insufficient volume. Much controversy surrounds resuscitation in hypovolemic shock. We aimed to identify the ideal fluid combination for treating hypovolemic shock-induced swine model, analyzing bioelectrical impedance and hemodynamics. Fifteen female three-way crossbred pigs were divided into three different groups. The three resuscitation fluids were (1) balanced crystalloid, (2) balanced crystalloid + 5% dextrose water, and (3) balanced crystalloid + 20% albumin. The experiment was divided into three phases and conducted sequentially: (1) controlled hemorrhage (1 L bleeding, 60 min), (2) resuscitation phase 1 (1 L fluid infusion, 60 min), and (3) resuscitation phase 2 (1 L fluid infusion, 60 min). Bioelectrical impedance analysis was implemented with a segmental multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analyzer. A total of 61 impedance measurements were assessed for each pig at six different frequencies in five segments of the pig. Pulse rate (PR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), stroke volume (SV), and stroke volume variation (SVV) were measured using a minimally invasive hemodynamic monitoring device. The three-dimensional graph showed a curved pattern when infused with 1 L of balanced crystalloid + 1 L of 5% dextrose water and 1.6 L of balanced crystalloid + 400 ml of 20% albumin. The 1M impedance increased in all groups during the controlled hemorrhage, and continuously decreased from fluid infusion to the end of the experiment. Only balanced crystalloid + 20% albumin significantly restored MAP and SV to the same level as the start of the experiment after the end of fluid infusion. There were no significant differences in MAP and SV from the time of recovery to the initial value of 1M impedance to the end of fluid infusion in all groups. The change and the recovery of hemodynamic indices such as MAP and SV coincide with the change and the recovery of 1M impedance. Using balanced crystalloid mixed with 20% albumin in hypovolemic shock-induced swine model may be helpful in securing hemodynamic stability, compared with balanced crystalloid single administration.

This retrospective cohort study investigated patients with cytomegalovirus anterior uveitis (CMV AU) and compared treatment outcomes between regional and systemic antiviral therapies. Treatment modalities included topical (2% ganciclovir [GCV] eye drops or 0.2% GCV eye gel) and systemic (intravenous GCV or oral valganciclovir) groups. The comparison parameters included response rates, time to response, recurrence rates, time to recurrence, and complications. Forty-four patients (54.5% male) with a mean age of 56 ± 9.87 years were enrolled, with 31 eyes in the topical group and 13 eyes in the systemic group. The median response time was significantly slower in the topical group (63 days [IQR 28-112]) compared to the systemic group (28 days [IQR 24-59]) (p = 0.04). Treatment response rates were 87.1% (27/31) in the topical group and 100% (13/13) in the systemic group (p = 0.30), while recurrence rates were 37% (10/27) and 69.2% (9/13) (p = 0.056), with a median time to recurrence of 483 days [IQR 145-1388] and 392 days [IQR 203.5-1907.5] (p = 0.20), respectively. In conclusion, both topical and systemic GCV treatments demonstrated favorable outcomes for CMV AU. Systemic GCV showed rapid control of intraocular inflammation.

Passively harmonic mode-locking has been experimentally demonstrated in an erbium-doped fiber laser with large normal dispersion using single-multi-single mode structure as artificial saturable absorber. By increasing the pump power under the same polarization setting, the mode-locking operation can switch from fundamental mode-locked to 5th order harmonic mode-locked. Highest repetition rate of 4.26 MHz (5th order harmonic) is observed, with pulse width and pulse energy ascertained at 290 fs and 3.0 nJ, respectively. Excellent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of above 50 dB is observed for all harmonic orders. The findings validated that SMS structure can be used to generate stable and switchable high order of harmonic mode-locked. The low-cost SMS fiber for harmonic mode-locked generation technique could lay the groundwork for future sustainable industrial growth.

This research examines pseudoparabolic nonlinear Oskolkov-Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers (OBBMB) equation, widely applicable in fields like optical fiber, soil consolidation, thermodynamics, nonlinear networks, wave propagation, and fluid flow in rock discontinuities. Wave transformation and the generalized Kudryashov method is utilized to derive ordinary differential equations (ODE) and obtain analytical solutions, including bright, anti-kink, dark, and kink solitons. The system of ODE, has been then examined by means of bifurcation analysis at the equilibrium points taking parameter variation into account. Furthermore, in order to get insight into the influence of some external force perturbation theory has been employed. For this purpose, a variety of chaos detecting techniques, for instance poincaré diagram, time series profile, 3D phase portraits, multistability investigation, lyapounov exponents and bifurcation diagram are implemented to identify the quasi periodic and chaotic motions of the perturbed dynamical model. These techniques enabled to analyze how perturbed dynamical system behaves chaotically and departs from regular patterns. Moreover, it is observed that the underlying model is quite sensitivity, as it changing dramatically even with slight changes to the initial condition. The findings are intriguing, novel and theoretically useful in mathematical and physical models. These provide a valuable mechanism to scientists and researchers to investigate how these perturbations influence the system's behavior and the extent to which it deviates from the unperturbed case.

Coronary artery bypass surgery can result in endothelial dysfunction due to ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injury. Previous studies have demonstrated that DuraGraft helps maintain endothelial integrity of saphenous vein grafts during ischemic conditions. In this study, we investigated the potential of DuraGraft to mitigate endothelial dysfunction in arterial grafts after IR injury using an aortic transplantation model. Lewis rats (n = 7-9/group) were divided in three groups. Aortic arches from the control group were prepared and rings were immediately placed in organ baths, while the aortic arches of IR and IR + DuraGraft rats were preserved in saline or DuraGraft, respectively, for 1 h before being transplanted heterotopically. After 1 h after reperfusion, the grafts were explanted, rings were prepared, and mounted in organ baths. Our results demonstrated that the maximum endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation to acetylcholine was significantly impaired in the IR group compared to the control group, but DuraGraft improved it (control: 89 ± 2%; IR: 24 ± 1%; IR + DuraGraft: 48 ± 1%, p < 0.05). Immunohistochemical analysis revealed decreased intercellular adhesion molecule-1, 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal, caspase-3 and caspase-8 expression, while endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 immunoreactivity was increased in the IR + DuraGraft grafts compared to the IR-group. DuraGraft mitigates endothelial dysfunction following IR injury in a rat bypass model. Its protective effect may be attributed, at least in part, to its ability to reduce the inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and apoptosis.
