A groundbreaking optical sensing membrane has been engineered for the accurate assessment of copper ions. The pliable poly(vinyl chloride) membrane is formulated through the integration of sodium tetraphenylborate (Na-TPB), 4-(2-hydroxy-4-nitro azobenzene)-2-methyl-quinoline (HNAMQ), and tri-n-octyl phosphine oxide (TOPO), in conjunction with o-nitrophenyl octyl ether (o-NPOE). The sensor membrane undergoes a thorough investigation of its composition to optimize performance, revealing that HNAMQ serves a dual role as both an ionophore and a chromoionophore. Simultaneously, TOPO contributes to enhancing the complexation of HNAMQ with copper ions. Demonstrating a linear range for Cu ions spanning from 5.0 × 10 to 7.5 × 10 M, the proposed sensor membrane showcases detection and quantification limits of 1.5 × 10 and 5.0 × 10 M, respectively. Rigorous assessments of potential interferences from other cations and anions revealed no observable disruptions in the detection of Cu. With no discernible HNAMQ leaching, the membrane demonstrates rapid response times and excellent durability. The sensor exhibits remarkable selectivity for Cu ions and can be regenerated through exposure to 0.05 M EDTA. Successful application of the sensor in determining the presence of Cu in biological (blood, liver and meat), soil, food (coffee, black tea, sour cherry juice, black currant, and milk powder) and environmental water samples underscores its efficacy.

In this study, new, functional hydroxyapatite-lignin hybrid systems were designed and characterized. The efficacy of the mechanical method utilized to obtain these systems was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The hybrid materials were also noted for their good electrokinetic stability and thermal stability. The introduction of 2.5 to 10 wt% hydroxyapatite-lignin systems into an unplasticized PVC blend using a two-step kneading and pressing method resulted in composites with relatively homogeneous distribution, as confirmed by SEM observations. The processing properties of the filler-containing blends were investigated using plastographometric analysis and MFR tests. The introduction of a lignin-predominant hybrid system into the PVC matrix results in a significant improvement of thermal stability, softening temperature, and tensile strength, while maintaining sufficient impact strength for numerous applications. Hybrid materials containing higher amounts of added lignin are promising materials with bacteriostatic properties. This can be utilized to stabilize and prevent the deposition of microorganisms, as well as the formation of biofilms, on material surfaces, thereby limiting the spread of pathogens. New eco-composites based on PVC and a hybrid filler containing lignin show promise in producing components with surfaces resistant to bacterial colonization. Hence, these materials could be used in medical and hospital equipment.

Review
One of the challenges preventing wide use of inorganic salt hydrate phase change materials (PCMs) is their low viscosity above their melting point, leading to leakage, phase segregation, and separation from heat exchanger surfaces in thermal management applications. The development of a broad strategy for using polymers that provide tunable, temperature-reversible shape stabilization of a variety of salt hydrates by using the lowest possible polymer concentrations is hindered by differences in solubility and gelation behavior of polymers with change in the type of ion. This work addressed the challenge of creating robust, temperature-responsive shape-stabilizing polymer gels (i.e., salogels) using a low cost PCM, calcium chloride hexahydrate (CaCl·6HO, CCH). Due to the extremely high (9 M) concentration of chloride ions and the tendency to salting-out polymer chains, the previous strategy of using single-polymer salogels was not successful. Thus, this work introduced a strategy of using two polymers, poly(vinyl alcohol) and ultrahigh molecular weight polyacrylamide (PVA and PAAm, respectively), along with borax as a cross-linker to achieve temperature-reversible, shape-stable salogels. This system resulted in robust salogels whose gel-to-sol transition temperature () was tunable within an application-relevant range of gelation temperature (30-80 °C). This behavior was enabled by a synergistic combination of dynamic covalent cross-links between PVA units and entanglements of PAAm chains which were combined into a single hybrid network. The hybrid salogels had <5 wt % polymer content, maintaining ∼95% of the heat of fusion of the pure PCM. Importantly, the noncovalent nature of gelation supported thermo-reversibility of gelation, shape stability, and retention of thermal properties over 50 melting/crystallization cycles.

Mg nanoparticles are an emerging plasmonic material due to Mg's abundance and ability to sustain size- and shape-dependent localized surface plasmon resonances across a broad range of wavelengths from the ultraviolet to the near infrared. However, Mg nanoparticles are colloidally unstable due to their tendency to aggregate and sediment. Nanoparticle aggregation can be inhibited by the addition of capping agents that impart surface charges or steric repulsion. Here, we report that the common capping agents poly(vinyl) pyrrolidone (PVP), polyethylene glycol (PEG), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) interact differently and have varied effects on the aggregation and colloidal stability of Mg nanoparticles. Nanoparticles synthesized in the presence of PVP showed improvements in colloidal stability and reduced aggregation, as observed by electron microscopy and optical spectroscopy. The binding of PVP was confirmed through infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The influence of PVP on the reduction of di--butyl magnesium was evaluated through analysis of particle size distribution and Mg yield as a function of reaction time, reducing agent, and temperature. Furthermore, the presence of PVP drastically changes the growth pattern of metallic Mg structures obtained from the reduction of the Grignard reagents butylmagnesium chloride and phenylmagnesium chloride by lithium naphthalenide: large polycrystalline aggregates and well-separated faceted nanoparticles grow without and with PVP, respectively. This study provides new synthetic routes that generate colloidally stable and well-dispersed Mg nanoparticles for plasmonic and other applications.

Lung infections, such as: pneumonia, chronic obstructive cystic fibrosis, tuberculosis are generally caused by viruses, bacteria and fungi. As these infections are very difficult to treat, new therapeutic approaches are investigated in order to maximize the efficiency of the treatment and to reduce the major complications that can occur. The main objective of this study was focused on the preparation of drug-loaded peptides-functionalized microcapsules, obtained by a double emulsion, based on carboxylated chitosan (CMCS), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and an activator [4-(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-4-methylmorpholinium chloride] (DMT-MM), for the dual active targeting and treatment of pulmonary infections. The microcapsules were functionalized on the surface with both CGSPGWVRC and indolicidin (IN) peptides, as effective ligands for the active targeting of both alveolar capillary endothelial cells and bacterial cells. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the formation of ester and amide bonds into the structure of prepared microcapsules. Microcapsules diameter varied between 893 and 965 nm. The swelling degree in PBS, at pH 7.4, ranged between 1760 %- 2100 %. All the analyzed samples showed hemolysis degrees lower than 2 %, which demonstrated their non-hemolytic character. Evaluation of the impact of microcapsules on WI-38 normal human lung cells and RAW 264.7 mouse macrophages revealed a non-toxic or slightly cytotoxic effect. Internalization assay proved that microcapsules were localized at intracellular level.

Successive multiple ionic-polymer layers (SMILs) have long since proved their worth in capillary electrophoresis as they ensure stable electroosmotic flow (EOF) and relatively high separation efficiency. Recently, we demonstrated that plotting the plate height (H) against the solute migration velocity (u) enabled a reliable quantitative evaluation of the coating performances in terms of separation efficiency. In this work, various physicochemical and chemical parameters of the SMIL coating were studied and optimized in order to decrease the slope of the ascending part of the H vs u curve, which is known to be controlled by the homogeneity in charge of the coating surface and by the possible residual solute adsorption onto the coating surface. SMILs based on poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) and poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) (PSS) were formed and the effect of each polyelectrolyte molar mass and of the number of polyelectrolyte layers (up to 21 layers) was studied. The use of polyethylene imine as an anchoring first layer was considered. More polyelectrolyte couples based on PDADMAC, polybrene, PSS, poly(vinyl sulfate), and poly(acrylic acid) were tested. Finally, zwitterionic polymers based on the poly(α-l-lysine) scaffold were synthesized and used as the last layer of SMILs, illustrating their ability to finetune the EOF, while maintaining good separation efficiency.

The endotracheal tube (ETT) affords support for intubated patients, but the increasing incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is jeopardizing its application. ETT surfaces promote (poly)microbial colonization and biofilm formation, with a heavy burden for VAP. Devising safe, broad-spectrum antimicrobial materials to tackle the ETT bioburden is needful. Herein, we immobilized ciprofloxacin (CIP) and/or chlorhexidine (CHX), through polydopamine (pDA)-based functionalization, onto poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) surfaces. These surfaces were characterized regarding physicochemical properties and challenged with single and polymicrobial cultures of VAP-relevant bacteria (, , , , ) and fungi (). The coatings imparted PVC surfaces with a homogeneous morphology, varied wettability, and low roughness. The antimicrobial immobilization via pDA chemistry was still evidenced by infrared spectroscopy. Coated surfaces exhibited sustained CIP/CHX release, retaining prolonged (10 days) activity. CIP/CHX-coated surfaces evidencing no A549 lung cell toxicity displayed better antibiofilm outcomes than CIP or CHX coatings, preventing bacterial attachment by 4.1-7.2 Log CFU/mL and modestly distressing. Their antibiofilm effectiveness was endured toward polymicrobial consortia, substantially inhibiting the adhesion of the bacterial populations (up to 8 Log CFU/mL) within the consortia in dual- and even in// triple-species biofilms while affecting fungal adhesion by 2.7 Log CFU/mL (dual consortia) and 1 Log CFU/mL (triple consortia). The potential of the dual-drug coating strategy in preventing triple-species adhesion and impairing bacterial viability was still strengthened by live/dead microscopy. The pDA-assisted CIP/CHX co-immobilization holds a safe and robust broad-spectrum antimicrobial coating strategy for PVC-ETTs, with the promise laying in reducing VAP incidence.

Infection-associated complications and repair failures and antibiotic resistance have emerged as a formidable challenge in hernia repair surgery. Consequently, the development of antibiotic-free antibacterial patches for hernia repair has become an exigent clinical necessity. Herein, a GBC/Gel/LL37 biological patch (biopatch) with exceptional antibacterial properties is fabricated by grafting 2-Methacryloyloxyethyl trimethylammonium chloride (METAC), a unique quaternary ammonium salt with vinyl, onto bacterial cellulose (GBC), followed by compounding with gelatin (Gel) and LL37. The GBC/Gel/LL37 biopatch exhibits stable swelling capacity, remarkable mechanical properties, flexibility, and favorable biocompatibility. The synergistic effect of METAC and LL37 confers upon the GBC/Gel/LL37 biopatch excellent antibacterial efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, effectively eliminating invading bacteria without the aid of exogenous antibiotics in vivo while significantly reducing local acute inflammation caused by infection. Furthermore, the practical efficacy of the GBC/Gel/LL37 biopatch is evaluated in an infected ventral hernia model, revealing that the GBC/Gel/LL37 biopatch can prevent the formation of visceral adhesions, facilitate the repair of infected ventral hernia, and effectively mitigate chronic inflammation. The prepared antibacterial GBC/Gel/LL37 biopatch is very effective in dealing with the risk of infection in hernia repair surgery and offers potential clinical opportunities for other soft injuries, exhibiting considerable clinical application prospects.

BACKGROUND
Among adults, stroke is the main causes of mortality and permanent disability. Neuroinflammation is one of the main causes of stoke-mediated neuronal death. Our previous study revealed that (E)-5-(2-(Quinolin-4-yl) vinyl) benzene-1, 3-diol (RV01), a quinolinyl analog of resveratrol, inhibits microglia-induced neuroinflammation and safeguards neurons from inflammatory harm. The preventive role of RV01 in ischemic stroke and its underlying cellular mechanisms and molecular targets remain poorly understood.
PURPOSE
To investigate whether RV01 alleviates ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury by inhibiting microglia-mediated neuroinflammation and determine the potential molecular mechanisms and targets by which RV01 inhibits the I/R-mediated microglia activation.
METHODS
Rat middle cerebral artery occlusion and reperfusion (MCAO/R) and BV-2 or primary microglial cells oxygen-glucose deprivation and reperfusion (OGD/R) models were established. The neurological behavior scores, 2, 3, 5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride staining and immunofluorescence were used to detect the neuroprotective effect of RV01 in the MCAO/R rats. In addition, the mRNA expression levels of IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β were detected to reveal the antineuroinflammatory effect of RV01. Moreover, a western blot assay was performed to explore the protein expression changes in NF-κB-mediated neuroinflammation. Finally, we identified TLR4 as an RV01 target through molecular docking, drug sensitivity target stability analysis, cellular thermal shift analysis, and surface plasmon resonance techniques.
RESULTS
RV01 reduced the infarct volume and neurological deficits, increased the rotarod duration, and decreased the number of rightward deflections in the MCAO/R rats. RV01 inhibited the NF-κB signaling pathway in vitro and in vivo, as demonstrated by the reduction in the transcription factor p65-mediated expression of several inflammatory factors including IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β. Further studies showed that its protective effect was associated with targeting the TLR4 protein. Notably, the anti-inflammatory effect of RV01 was markedly reinforced by the TLR4 knockdown, but inhibited by the overexpression of TLR4. Results revealed that the conditioned medium derived from the RV01-treated BV-2 cells significantly decreased the OGD/R-mediated neuronal damage.
CONCLUSION
Our results are the first to reveal the protective effects of RV01 on cerebral ischemia, depending on its inhibitory effect on the NF-κB pathway by targeting TLR4. RV01 could be a potential protective agent in ischemic stroke treatment.

The increased load of plastic in waste streams after the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak has increased the possibility of microplastics (MPs) contamination channelling through the rivers and infiltrating the aquatic ecosystems. MPs in packaged water, community-stored water, groundwater, and surface water of Kaveri River (KR), Thamirabarani River (TR), Adyar River (AR), and Cooum River (CR) in Tamil Nadu were therefore investigated about 2 years after the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. Using μFTIR and μRaman spectroscopy, polyamide, polypropylene, polyethylene, ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer resin, and polyvinyl chloride were identified as the primary polymer types. The average number of MPs was 2.15 ± 1.9 MP/L, 1.1 ± 0.99 MP/L, 5.25 ± 1.15 MP/L, and 4 ± 2.65 MP/L in KR, TR, AR, and CR, respectively, and 1.75 ± 1.26 MP/L in groundwater, and 2.33 ± 1.52 MP/L in community stored water. Only LDPE was detected in recycled plastic-made drinking water bottles. More than 50% of MPs were found to be of size less than 1 mm, with fibrous MPs being the prevalent type, and a notable prevalence of blue-coloured microplastics in all the sample types. The Pollution Load Index (PLI) was >1 in all the rivers. Toxicity rating based on the polymer risk index (PORI) categorized AR and TR at medium risk (category II), compared to KR and CR at considerable risk (category III). Overall pollution risk index (PRI) followed a decreasing trend with CR > AR > KR > TR of considerable to low-risk category. Ecological risk assessment indicates a negligible risk to freshwater biota, except for four sites in the middle and lower stretches of Adyar River (AR - 2, AR - 4) and upper and lower stretches of Cooum River (CR - 1, CR - 3), located adjacent to direct sewer outlets, and one location in the lower stretch of Kaveri River (KR - 9), known for fishing and tourist activities.
