Aim: The single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs713041, located in the regulatory region, is required to incorporate selenium into the selenoprotein glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) and has been found to have functional consequences. This systematic review aimed to conduct a meta-analysis to determine whether there is an association between GPX4 (rs713041) SNP and the risk of diseases in humans and its correlation with selenium status. Material and methods: A systematic search for English-language manuscripts published between January 1990 and November 2022 was carried out using six databases: CINAHL, Cochrane, Medline, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were applied to assess a relationship between GPX4 (rs713041) SNP and the risk of different diseases based on three genetic models. Review Manager 5.4 and Comprehensive Meta-Analysis 4 software were used to perform the meta-analysis and carry out Egger’s test for publication bias. Results: Data from 21 articles were included in the systematic review. Diseases were clustered according to the physiological system affected to understand better the role of GPX4 (rs713041) SNP in developing different diseases. Carriers of the GPX4 (rs173041) T allele were associated with an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer in additive and dominant models (p = 0.02 and p = 0.004, respectively). In addition, carriers of the T allele were associated with an increased risk of developing stroke and hypertension in the additive, dominant and recessive models (p = 0.002, p = 0.004 and p = 0.01, respectively). On the other hand, the GPX4 (rs713041) T allele was associated with a decreased risk of developing pre-eclampsia in the additive, dominant and recessive models (p < 0.0001, p = 0.002 and p = 0.0005, respectively). Moreover, selenium levels presented lower mean values in cancer patients relative to control groups (SMD = −0.39 µg/L; 95% CI: −0.64, −0.14; p = 0.002, I2 = 85%). Conclusion: GPX4 (rs713041) T allele may influence colorectal cancer risk, stroke, hypertension and pre-eclampsia. In addition, low selenium levels may play a role in the increased risk of cancer.

Galectin-3 and myeloperoxidase (MPO) are novel biomarkers in the field of cardio-oncology, but conflicting results have been reported. Hence, a meta-analysis was performed to assess the monitoring value of galectin-3 and MPO in cancer-therapy-related cardiotoxicity. PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, Embase, CNKI databases and ClinicalTrials.gov were queried. According to the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, eight studies with 1979 patients were included in this meta-analysis. The examination of the study's heterogeneity (I), quality assessment and statistical analysis were performed by two reviewers. No significant differences in galectin-3 levels were noted before and after treatment (WMD = -0.10, 90% CI -6.06-5.85, I: 99%), and a weaker relationship was observed between galectin-3 evaluations and cancer-therapy-related cardiotoxicity (HR = 1.39, 90% CI 0.97-1.98, I: 0%). However, MPO levels were increased in patients post-treatment (SMD = 0.58, 90% CI 0.35-0.80, I: 56%), and an increased risk of cardiotoxicity was associated with early pre-post MPO assessments (HR = 1.16, 90% CI 1.02-1.32, I: 21%). Surprisingly, the MPO levels were a more effective indicator of the response to tumor treatment compared with the TnI (SMD = 2.46, 90% CI -0.26-5.19, I: 96%) and NT-proBNP levels (SMD = 1.08, 90% CI -0.82-2.98, I: 96%). In conclusion, our meta-analysis suggests that MPO may rep-resent a potential biomarker for the early detection of cardiotoxicity in current cardio-oncology practice, but the monitoring value of galectin-3 requires further study.

OBJECTIVE
Brain's aerobic energy metabolism, abundance of the fatty acids and unsaturated lipids, generation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) by hormones, physiological roles of transition metals (i.e., iron and copper), and free radicals in the nervous system may cause inclination to oxidative stress in psychiatric disorders. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may cause oxidative stress by the electrical field or by the induced seizure. It was aimed to review the literature in terms of the influence of ECT on levels of oxidant and antioxidant compounds.
METHODS
The literature search was performed with the keywords that were oxidative stress or "DNA damage" or "RNA damage" or "lipid peroxidase" or "superoxide dismutase" or "catalase" or "glutathione" or "nitrite" or "nitric oxide" and "electroconvulsive therapy" or "electroconvulsive shock" or "electroconvulsive seizure". Twenty of 1480 records were included.
RESULTS
Eleven studies were performed in human subjects, whereas 9 studies were performed in rats. Human studies are conducted with serum, plasma, or urine samples; rat studies include brain tissues from various sites. In rats, four independent studies showed increased levels of lipid oxidation markers, and four independent studies reported increased levels of oxidative stress markers in brain samples. In human studies, studies were performed with circulating blood samples and the results were more inconsistent.
CONCLUSION
Although some markers like superoxide dismutase or thioredoxin imply that ECT may increase the balance for oxidative stress, this notion is not supported by other markers of ECT. The current literature does not clearly suggest that the ECT is associated with oxidative stress in psychiatric disorders. Further studies with similar methods should be performed in big samples.

BACKGROUND
Hydrogen rich water (HRW) was used as an auxiliary treatment for periodontitis and peri-implantitis due to its good antioxidant properties. However, the stability of artificially added active hydrogen was far less than that of pure natural active hydrogen, which greatly reduced active hydrogen molecules number in HRW. Meanwhile, the effect of HRW was relatively slow. Finally, long-term drinking of HRW may cause abnormal liver function. Hence, this study sought to summarize and analyze the effects of HRW on oral inflammation and oral flora in various studies to determine whether HRW can be used to inhibit dental plaque formation and aliviate oral inflammation.
METHODS
Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of HRW and pure water (PW) in the treatment of periodontal diseases published before March 2022 in the PubMed, Web of science, EMBASE, Cochrane, China Knowledge Resource Integrated, Wanfang, and Weipu databases were searched. Changes in the inflammatory factor levels, oxidative stress response, and oral flora were summarized and used as outcome indicators. The quality of included studies was assessed by Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool, and the standardized mean differences (SMD) and the 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using Review Manager 5.3.
RESULTS
In total, 17 studies, comprising 304 subjects, were included in this meta-analysis. Among them, 5 studies had a high risk of bias, and the rest had a certain risk of bias, thus, the total risk of bias was medium to low. The levels of interleukin (IL)-1β (SMD =-0.73; 95% CI: -1.29 to -0.18; P=0.009), tumor necrosis factor alpha (SMD =-2.51; 95% CI: -3.56 to -1.46; P<0.00001), IL-6 (SMD =-1.31; 95% CI: -1.96 to -0.67; P<0.0001), 8-hydroxyguanosine (SMD =-1.61; 95% CI: -2.35 to -0.87; P<0.0001), and reactive oxygen metabolites (SMD =-0.49; 95% CI: -0.91 to -0.06; P=0.02) in the HRW group decreased significantly, while the glutathione peroxidase level increased (SMD =2.5; 95% CI: 1.85 to 3.15; P<0.00001). Additionally, HRW was shown to effectively inhibit oral pathogenic bacteria activity (SMD =-0.91; 95% CI: -1.16 to -0.66; P<0.00001).
CONCLUSIONS
HRW effectively inhibits the inflammatory reaction, oxidative stress level, and bacterial proliferation activity in patients with periodontal disease.

Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs) are chronic autoimmune disorders that cause impaired immunoregulation, leading to specific immune responses against thyroid antigens. Graves' disease (GD) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) are the major forms of AITDs. Increasing evidence suggests a possible role of microbiota alterations in the pathogenesis and progression of AITDs. This systematic review was designed to address the following question: "Is microbiota altered in patients with AITDs?" After screening the selected studies using the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 16 studies were included in this review (in accordance with PRISMA statement guidelines). A meta-analysis revealed that patients with HT showed significantly higher values of diversity indices (except for the Simpson index) and that patients with GD showed significant tendencies toward lower values of all assessed indices compared with healthy subjects. However, the latter demonstrated a higher relative abundance of and at the phylum level and thus and at the genus level, respectively. Thyroid peroxidase antibodies showed the most significant positive and negative correlations between bacterial levels and thyroid functional parameters. In conclusion, significant alterations in the diversity and composition of the intestinal microbiota were observed in both GD and HT patients.

Saliva is a useful biomarker for diagnosing oral health conditions, including periodontal disease (PD). Smoking is a risk factor for PD. The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the salivary biomarkers associated with PD based on smoking status. A comprehensive search of the MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE, Cochrane, SCOPUS, and Web of Sciences databases was conducted up to 1 January 2021 using key terms relevant to the topic of our research and Cochrane methodology and improved with searching a gray literature resource. The methodological quality of all included studies was assessed with the revised Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2. Seven studies were included. Smokers had increased levels of malondialdehyde, sialic acid, salivary cortisol, salivary interleukin 1β, albumin, tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase (TIMP), and the pyridinoline cross-linked carboxyterminal telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP), as well as decreased levels of superoxide dismutase, activity of lactate dehydrogenase, activity of enzyme activity of β-glucuronidase, uric acid, matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8)/TIMP-1 ratio, and combinations of MMP-8 and ICTP. However, mixed results were observed some studies in detecting glutathione peroxidase, MMP-8, and MMP-14. The results were interpreted with caution because of limitations in the number of included studies and the study design. Some salivary biomarkers are potentially useful in combination or alone for diagnosing PD. Methodological and systematic studies are needed to develop more effective biomarkers.

Exposure to nanomaterials (NMs) is suggested to have the potential to cause harmful health effects. Activations of oxidative stress and inflammation are assumed as main contributors to NM-induced toxicity. Thus, oxidative stress- and inflammation-related indicators may serve as biomarkers for occupational risk assessment. However, the correlation between NM exposure and these biomarkers remains controversial. This study aimed to perform a meta-analysis to systematically investigate the alterations of various biomarkers after NM exposure. Twenty-eight studies were found eligible by searching PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases. The pooled results showed NM exposure was significantly associated with increases in the levels of malonaldehyde (MDA) [standardized mean difference (SMD) = 2.18; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.50-2.87], 4-hydroxy-2-nonhenal (HNE) (SMD = 2.05; 95% CI, 1.13-2.96), aldehydes C6-12 (SMD = 3.45; 95% CI, 2.80-4.10), 8-hydroxyguanine (8-OHG) (SMD = 2.98; 95% CI, 2.22-3.74), 5-hydroxymethyl uracil (5-OHMeU) (SMD = 1.90; 95% CI, 1.23-2.58), o-tyrosine (o-Tyr) (SMD = 1.81; 95% CI, 1.22-2.41), 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NOTyr) (SMD = 2.63; 95% CI, 1.74-3.52), interleukin (IL)-1β (SMD = 1.76; 95% CI, 0.87-2.66), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α (SMD = 1.52; 95% CI, 1.03-2.01), myeloperoxidase (MPO) (SMD = 0.25; 95% CI, 0.16-0.34) and fibrinogen (SMD = 0.11; 95% CI, 0.02-0.21), and decreases in the levels of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) (SMD = -0.31; 95% CI, -0.52--0.11) and IL-6 soluble receptor (IL-6sR) (SMD = -0.18; 95% CI, -0.28--0.09). Subgroup analysis indicated oxidative stress biomarkers (MDA, HNE, aldehydes C6-12, 8-OHG, 5-OHMeU, o-Tyr, 3-NOTyr and GPx) in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) and blood samples were strongly changed by NM exposure; inflammatory biomarkers (IL-1β, TNF-α, MPO, fibrinogen and IL-6sR) were all significant in EBC, blood, sputum and nasal lavage samples. In conclusion, our findings suggest that these oxidative stress and inflammatory indicators may be promising biomarkers for the biological monitoring of occupationally NM-exposed workers.

Deciphering the biological basis of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes in complex diseases is challenging. Rapid advances in multi-omics approaches provide new opportunities to unveil the biological basis of TCM syndromes. We intend to summarize the latest significant progress and highlight the crucial value of applying multi-omics approaches to reveal TCM syndromes of stroke in a new horizon. We systematically searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC), Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database (VIP), Wanfang database and China Biology Medicine Database (SinoMed) for relevant studies from their inception to 31 March 2022, and conducted a comprehensive systematic review (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42021285922). A total of 43 relevant studies were included in the final systematic review, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics were all involved. Some gene polymorphisms, differential lncRNAs, mRNAs, miRNAs, proteins, and metabolites may be associated with TCM syndromes of stroke. In addition, some studies conducted a preliminary exploration on the different diseases with the same TCM syndrome. The results showed that thioredoxin-dependent peroxidase reductase may be the specific marker protein of Liver-yang transforming into wind syndrome, and the network formed by mir-146b-5p, -199a-5p, and 23 targeted mRNAs may be the biomarker of Blood-stasis syndrome. Multi-omics technologies have served as powerful tools to investigate the complexity of TCM syndromes and may hold the promise of promoting the modernization of TCM as well as personalized medicine of TCM in stroke.

The Brazil nut (BN) is a promising food due to its numerous health benefits, but it is still necessary to systematically review the scientific evidence on these benefits. Thus, we examined the effects of regular BN consumption on health markers in humans according to the health state (with specific diseases or not) of the subjects. PubMed, Embase, and Scielo databases were used to search for clinical trials. The PRISMA guideline was used to report the review, and the risk of bias for all studies was assessed. Twenty-four studies were included in the present review, of which fifteen were non-randomized. BNs were consumed in the context of a habitual free-living diet in all studies. Improvement in antioxidant status through increased levels of selenium and/or glutathione peroxidase activity in plasma, serum, whole blood, and/or erythrocytes was observed in all studies that evaluated antioxidant status, regardless of the health state of the sample. In addition, healthy subjects improved lipid markers and fasting glucose. Subjects with obesity had improvement in markers of lipid metabolism. Subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus or dyslipidemia improved oxidative stress or DNA damage. Subjects undergoing hemodialysis benefited greatly from BN consumption, as they improved lipid profile markers, oxidative stress, inflammation, and thyroid function. Older adults with mild cognitive impairment improved verbal fluency and constructional praxis, and controversial results regarding the change in a marker of lipid peroxidation were observed in subjects with coronary artery disease. In conclusion, the benefits of BN consumption were found in different pathways of action and study populations.

Salivary proteins play an important role in repairing mechanisms of damaged tissues and the maintenance of oral health. However, there is a dearth of information in the literature regarding the concentrations of salivary proteins in caries-free (CF) and caries-active (CA) subjects. Hence, this systematic review was conducted to update our previous systematic review published in 2013 that aimed to assess the association between caries and salivary proteins by comparing CF and CA individuals. Thereby, evaluating the possibility of whether salivary proteins can be regarded as biomarkers for caries. An extensive search of studies was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science, and Elsevier's Scopus between July 2012 and January 2022, without any language restriction. Manual searching in Google Scholar and evaluation of bibliographies of the included studies were also undertaken. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to assess the risk of bias (RoB) within the included studies. Of 22 included studies, 1,551 human subjects (range: 30-213 participants) were recruited, of which 848 individuals (54.7%) were CA and 703 (45.3%) were CF. Regarding the utilization of DMFT as the caries index, high variability was observed across different articles. A statistically significant increase in the salivary levels of alpha-amylase, acidic proline-rich protein-1, histatin-5, lactoperoxidase, and mucin-1 was found in CA patients, while the salivary levels of carbonic anhydrase 6, proteinase-3, and statherin were observed to be significantly increased in CF subjects. Conflicting results were found regarding the salivary levels of immunoglobulin A and total proteins among CA and CF subjects. The included studies were categorized as low RoB (n = 15), medium RoB (n = 4), and high RoB (n = 3). Due to significant heterogeneity among the included studies, no meta-analysis could be performed. In conclusion, the salivary levels of protein(s) might be a useful biomarker for caries diagnosis, especially alpha-amylase, acidic proline-rich protein-1, histatin-5, lactoperoxidase, mucin-1, carbonic anhydrase 6, proteinase-3, and statherin. However, their diagnostic value must be verified by large-scale prospective studies.
