The Neolithic communities of Eastern Sudan combined intensive pastoralism with plant exploitation as their main subsistence strategies. However, to date, it remains unclear which plant species were part of the human diet during the Neolithic. This contribution presents direct data on plant consumption in Eastern Sudan from the Early to Late Neolithic, obtained through the analysis of microdebris inclusions in the dental calculus of 37 individuals, integrated by dentoalveolar pathology analysis of 78 individuals, from the sites UA53 (4th millennium BCE) and Mahal Teglinos (3rd-2nd millennium BCE), located in the Gash Delta/Kassala region. Dental calculus inclusions indicate a diverse intake of cereals, legumes, and tubers during the Middle Neolithic, thus supporting the hypothesis of high reliance on plant resources. Dentoalveolar pathologies, possibly related to the consumption of carbohydrate-rich foods, have also been recorded. For the Late Neolithic, consistent with the shift towards aridity that occurred in the Middle/Late Holocene, dental calculus exclusively indicates the exploitation of sorghum and tubers-species well adapted to arid conditions-showing how the Neolithic communities modified their subsistence in response to environmental changes. Evidence of plant processing techniques, such as cooking/heating, was also revealed from the dental calculus analysis.

There has been an exponential increase in the diagnosis of transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CA). In response, the Midlands Amyloidosis Service was launched with the aim of providing patients with a timely diagnosis, remote expertise from the National Amyloidosis Centre and access to emerging transthyretin (TTR)-directed therapies. This was a descriptive study of a pilot hub-and-spoke model of delivering specialist amyloidosis care. Patients with suspected amyloidosis were referred from the wider Midlands region, and seen in a consultant-led multidisciplinary clinic. The diagnosis of ATTR-CA was established according to either the validated non-biopsy criteria or histological confirmation of ATTR deposits with imaging evidence of amyloid. Study endpoints were the volume of service provision and the time to diagnosis from the receipt of referral. Patients (n=173, age 75±2 years; male 72 %) were referred between 2019 and 2021. Eighty patients (46 %) were found to have cardiac amyloidosis, of whom 68 (85 %) had ATTR-CA. The median time from referral to diagnosis was 43 days. By removing the need for patients to travel to London, an average of 187 patient-miles was saved. Fifteen (9 %) patients with wild-type ATTR-CA received tafamidis under the Early Access to Medicine scheme; 10 (6 %) were enrolled into phase 3 clinical trials of RNA interference or antisense oligonucleotide therapies. Our results suggest that implementing a UK amyloidosis network appears feasible and would enhance equity of access to specialised amyloidosis healthcare for the increasing numbers of older patients found to have ATTR-CA.

Repeated local delivery of hyaluronic acid gel as adjunctive treatment of residual pockets in periodontitis patients undergoing supportive periodontal care. A randomized controlled clinical trial.
OBJECTIVES
To assess the effect of hyaluronic acid (HyA) application as adjunct to re-instrumentation of residual pockets in patients undergoing regular supportive periodontal care (SPC).
METHODS
Chronic periodontitis patients (stage III and IV, grade B and C) with 4 interproximal residual pockets were randomly assigned to the test (HyA gel) or control (saline) group. After subgingival instrumentation, test or control substance was applied subgingivally, then daily supragingivally for 3 months, and if required a second time after subgingival re-instrumentation after 3 months. Clinical and patient reported outcome parameters were recorded every 3 months for 12 months. Pocket closure [probing pocket depth (PPD) ≤ 4mm with absence of bleeding on probing (BoP) at PPD = 4mm] was the main outcome parameter.
RESULTS
Fifty-six patients (221 experimental sites) were analysed. Pocket closure was achieved in 56.8 and 46.6% of the experimental sites in the test and control group, respectively (p > 0.05), while median PPD and PPD distribution (< 5mm/5mm/ > 5mm) differed significantly between groups in favour of the test group, at 12 months. Further, significantly fewer sites in the HyA group required re-instrumentation at 3 months, and sites in the HyA group showed a tendency for lower odds to remain diseased compared to the control group (OR 0.48, 95%CI 0.22-1.06). The odds for a site to remain diseased after 12 months increased significantly in the presence of plaque (OR 7.94, 95%CI 4.12-15.28), but in general, decreased significantly over time (OR 0.48, 95%CI 0.28-0.81).
CONCLUSION
Re-instrumentation of residual pockets in SPC patients, per se, leads to a significant increase in pocket closure over time; this was impeded by poor plaque control. Repeated local application of HyA results in fewer sites requiring re-instrumentation and might slightly improve the rate of pocket closure. (clinicaltrials.gov registration nr. NCT04792541).
CLINICAL RELEVANCE
HyA gel is easy to apply, well accepted by patients, and may have some positive effect in terms of fewer sites requiring re-instrumentation at 3 months and higher pocket closure rate at 12 months.

OBJECTIVE
To investigate the effects of different polishing methods on the surface microstructure and roughness of teeth following initial periodontal treatment.
METHODS
Teeth were divided into three groups (silica onegloss, polishing disc, and polishing strip) in vitro. Tooth surface microstructure was characterized via scanning electron microscopy. Roughness was measured by profilometry and laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM). According to the in vitro results, one group was chosen for further clinical trials. Effects of the chosen polishing method on patient plaque control and satisfaction were assessed via plaque staining and visual analog scale (VAS).
RESULTS
Electron microscopy results revealed that the polishing disc group had smoother roots and crowns than did the other two groups. Roughness analysis revealed that the crown roughness with the polishing disc and silica onegloss was lower, and the root roughness with the polishing disc was the lowest (p < .05) The LSCM results showed that the pigment deposition depth with the polishing disc and silicon onegloss in the crowns and roots were significantly lower than those with the other two methods (p = .000). The polishing effect of the polishing disc was best among the three groups. Clinical trials were performed to verify the polishing disc effects. Plaque staining results showed that the decrease in plaque in the polishing disc group was greater than that of the rubber cup group (p = .020), which was similar to the results of LSCM. The VAS results showed that the polishing disc made teeth feel smoother, similar to the results of the roughness detection, and the procedure was more comfortable (p < .05). However, there was no significant difference between the two groups regarding foreign body sensation during pronunciation (p = .178).
CONCLUSION
Combining in vitro and in vivo evaluations, the use of a polishing disc following periodontal treatment yielded superior polishing effects on teeth and was better accepted by patients.

BACKGROUND
Gingivitis is driven by plaque accumulation and, if left untreated, can progress to irreversible periodontitis. For many, the mechanical action of toothbrushing does not achieve adequate plaque control. The aim of this study was to investigate whether twice-daily use of a toothpaste containing 0.2% high molecular weight (HMW) sodium hyaluronate with 67% sodium bicarbonate and 0.221% sodium fluoride (experimental toothpaste) could improve gingival health compared with a regular fluoride toothpaste (negative control). The study also assessed whether the experimental toothpaste could provide additive gingival health benefit over a toothpaste containing only 67% sodium bicarbonate and 0.221% sodium fluoride (positive control).
METHODS
This was a single-center, examiner-blinded, randomized, clinical study in healthy adults with mild-to-moderate gingivitis. At baseline, after abstaining from toothbrushing for 12 h, prospective participants underwent oral soft tissue (OST) and oral hard tissue examination followed by assessments for gingival inflammation (Modified Gingival Index [MGI]), gingival bleeding (Bleeding Index [BI]), and supra-gingival plaque (Turesky Plaque Index [TPI]). Eligible participants were stratified by gender and baseline number of bleeding sites (low: <45; high: ≥45 bleeding sites). Following randomization, participants underwent prophylactic dental treatment. Participants received a full OST examination, MGI, BI and TPI assessments after 3 days, 1, 2 and 6 weeks of product use.
RESULTS
In total, 110 participants were screened for study entry and all were randomized to receive one of three toothpastes (experimental: sodium hyaluronate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium fluoride; positive control: sodium bicarbonate, sodium fluoride; negative control: regular fluoride toothpaste). For all measures, significant improvements were observed in participants receiving either sodium bicarbonate-containing toothpaste (experimental or positive control) compared with the regular fluoride toothpaste (negative control) at week 6. No significant difference was observed in any assessment or visit comparing the experimental toothpaste with the positive control.
CONCLUSIONS
Both the experimental and the positive control toothpastes demonstrated clinically relevant improvements in gingival health compared with a regular fluoride toothpaste (negative control). However, no additional gingival health improvement was observed for the experimental toothpaste compared with the positive control, therefore, no additional gingival health benefit can be attributed to the inclusion of sodium hyaluronate in this formulation.

Teeth are the hardest and most chemically stable tissues in the body, are well-preserved in archaeological remains and, being resistant to decomposition in the soil, survive long after their supporting structures have deteriorated. It has long been recognised that visual and radiographic examination of teeth can provide considerable information relating to the lifestyle of an individual. This paper examines the latest scientific approaches that have become available to investigate recent and ancient teeth. These techniques include DNA analysis, which can be used to determine the sex of an individual, indicate familial relationships, study population movements, provide phylogenetic information and identify the presence of disease pathogens. A stable isotopic approach can shed light on aspects of diet and mobility and even research climate change. Proteomic analysis of ancient dental calculus can reveal specific information about individual diets. Synchrotron microcomputed tomography is a non-invasive technique which can be used to visualise physiological impactful events, such as parturition, menopause and diseases in cementum microstructure - these being displayed as aberrant growth lines.

BACKGROUND
To investigate the effects of combinations of mechanical (brushing and flossing) and chemotherapeutic regimens which included essential oils (EO) non-alcohol and alcohol-containing mouthrinses compared to brushing only in the prevention and reduction of plaque, gingivitis, and gingival bleeding.
METHODS
This was a randomized, virtually supervised, examiner blind, controlled clinical trial. Following informed consent and screening, subjects (N = 270) with gingivitis were randomly assigned to one of the following regimens: (1) Brush Only (B, n = 54); (2) Brush/Rinse (EO alcohol-containing mouthrinse) (BA, n = 54); (3) Brush/Rinse (EO non-alcohol containing mouthrinse) (BZ, n = 54); (4) Brush/Floss (BF, n = 54); (5) Brush/Floss/Rinse (EO non-alcohol containing mouthrinse) (BFZ, n = 54). Unflavored waxed dental floss (REACH unflavored waxed dental floss), and fluoridated toothpaste (Colgate Cavity Protection) were used. Examinations included oral hard and soft tissue, plaque, gingivitis, gingival bleeding, probing depth and bleeding on probing.
RESULTS
After 12 weeks, both BA and BZ and the BFZ group were superior in reducing interproximal plaque (30.8%, 18.2%, 16.0%, respectively), gingivitis (39.0%, 36.9%, 36.1%, respectively), and bleeding (67.8%, 73.6%, 79.8%, respectively) compared to B. The BF group did not provide significant reductions in interproximal plaque but did reduce interproximal gingivitis (5.1%, p = 0.041) at Week 4 and bleeding at Weeks 4 and 12 (34.6%, 31.4%, p < 0.001 respectively) compared to B. The BFZ group did not significantly reduce interproximal plaque, gingivitis or bleeding compared to BZ.
CONCLUSIONS
This study demonstrated that the addition of EO non-alcohol containing mouthrinse to the manual toothbrushing and flossing regimen further reduces plaque, gingivitis and bleeding showing that addition of EO mouthrinses (alcohol or non-alcohol containing) to the oral hygiene regimen provides sustained reductions in plaque to help maintain gingival health after a dental prophylaxis. Dental professional recommendation of the addition of an EO non-alcohol containing mouthrinse to daily oral hygiene routines of brushing or brushing and flossing should be considered to aid supragingival plaque control and improve gingivitis prevention.

OBJECTIVES
The positive effects of strontium on dental and skeletal remineralization have been confirmed in the literature. This study aimed to assess the properties of a calcium silicate cement (CSC) containing a sintered strontium silicate phase.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
The calcium silicate and strontium silicate phases were synthesized by the sol-gel technique. Strontium silicate powder in 0 (CSC), 10 (CSC/10Sr), 20 (CSC/20Sr), and 30 (CSC/30Sr) weight percentages was mixed with calcium silicate powder. Calcium chloride was used in the liquid phase. X-ray diffraction (XRD) of specimens was conducted before and after hydration. The setting time and compressive strength were assessed at 1 and 7 days after setting. The set discs of the aforementioned groups were immersed in the simulated body fluid (SBF) for 1 and 7 days. The ion release profile was evaluated by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Biomineralization on the specimen surface was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). Data were analyzed by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, one-way and mixed ANOVA, Levene's test, and LSD post hoc test ( < 0.05).
RESULTS
Except for an increasement in the peak intensity of hydrated specimens, XRD revealed no other difference in the crystalline phases of hydrated and nonhydrated specimens. The compressive strength was not significantly different at 1 and 7 days in any group ( > 0.05). The setting time significantly decreased by an increase in percentage of strontium ( < 0.05). Release of Ca and Si ions significantly decreased by an increase in percentage of strontium ( < 0.05). SEM/EDS showed the formation of calcium phosphate deposits at 1 and 7 days.
CONCLUSION
Incorporation of 10-30 wt% sintered strontium silicate phase as premixed in CSC can significantly decrease the setting time without compromising the compressive strength or biomineralization process of the cement.

Leprosy was one of the most outwardly visible diseases in the European Middle Ages, a period during which leprosaria were founded to provide space for the sick. The extant documentary evidence for leprosy hospitals, especially in relation to diet, therapeutic, and medical care, is limited. However, human dental calculus stands to be an important source of information as it provides insight into the substances people were exposed to and accumulated in their bodies during their lives. In the present study, microremains and DNA were analysed from the calculus of individuals buried in the late medieval cemetery of St Leonard, a leprosarium located in Peterborough, England. The results show the presence of ginger (Zingiber officinale), a culinary and medicinal ingredient, as well as evidence of consumption of cereals and legumes. This research suggests that affected individuals consumed ingredients mentioned in medieval medical textbooks that were used to treat regions of the body typically impacted by leprosy. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first study which has identified Zingiber officinale in human dental calculus in England or on the wider European continent.

BACKGROUNDS
The pathogenic microorganisms and clinical manifestations of caries and periodontitis are different, caries and periodontitis are usually discussed separately, and the relationship between them is ignored. Clinically, patients prone to dental caries generally have a healthier periodontal status, whereas patients with periodontitis generally have a lower incidence of dental caries. The relationship between dental caries and periodontitis remains unclear.
OBJECTIVES
This study aimed to explain the clinical phenomenon of antagonism between dental caries and periodontitis by exploring the ecological chain and bacterial interactions in dental caries, periodontitis, and other comorbid diseases.
METHODS
The dental plaque microbiomes of 30 patients with oral diseases (10 each with caries, periodontitis, and comorbid diseases) were sequenced and analysed using 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. The Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database was used for a differential functional analysis of dental plaque microbial communities in caries, periodontitis, and comorbid diseases.
RESULTS
The coinfection group had the greatest bacterial richness in dental plaque. The principal coordinate analysis showed that caries and periodontitis were separate from each other, and comorbid diseases were located at the overlap of caries and periodontitis, with most of them being periodontitis. Simultaneously, we compared the microbiomes with significant differences among the three groups and the correlations between the microbiome samples. In addition, KEGG pathway analysis revealed significant differences in functional changes among the three groups.
CONCLUSIONS
This study revealed the composition of the dental plaque microbial communities in caries, periodontitis, and comorbidities and the differences among the three. Additionally, we identified a possible antagonism between periodontitis and caries. We identified a new treatment strategy for the prediction and diagnosis of caries and periodontitis.
