BACKGROUND
The prevalence of hearing loss is increasing annually and has a strong relationship with oral health. However, existing research on hearing loss is limited to children, making it necessary to expand the analysis to adults. Therefore, this study aims to identify differences in oral health-related factors according to hearing loss in adults over 40 years of age using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
METHODS
This study analyzed survey data from 2021. The study participants were divided into 1738 individuals in the nonhearing loss group and 1384 in the hearing loss group. Complex sample chi-square and complex sample independent t-tests were performed to determine differences in the sociodemographic characteristics, systemic diseases, hearing loss-related factors, and oral health status between the two groups.
RESULTS
Compared to the nonhearing loss group, the hearing loss group was older and had lower income and education levels. In terms of oral health, the hearing loss group had fewer existing natural teeth, poorer prosthesis conditions, and a higher number of implants than the nonhearing loss group. The hearing loss group also experienced comparatively more problems with chewing and speaking (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONS
Individuals with hearing loss exhibited poorer oral health status than those without hearing loss. Therefore, dental professionals in clinical practice should develop their communication skills to interact effectively with patients with hearing loss and strive to improve their oral health.

AIM
The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term clinical outcomes of zirconia-based prostheses used for tooth-supported or implant-supported single crowns and fixed dental prostheses (FPD).
METHODS
The authors conducted a prospective analysis of 562 zirconia core restorations supported by endodontically treated teeth or titanium implant in 276 patients in a general dental private practice, with a follow-up period of 15 years. The study was stopped after patients achieved 15 yrs of follow-up. The study analyzed the failure and complication rates of single and multiple crowns, based on Kaplan Meier analysis.
RESULTS
During follow-up period, there were 26 complications and 156 failures. The crown level analysis revealed a cumulative failure rate of 28.33% and complication rate of 8.47% for zirconia crowns after 15 years. The complication rate was found to be higher for titanium implant-supported than for natural teeth-supported crowns. The different types of crown-based failure include: veener fracture 5.01% (N = 29), metal zirconia led to 14.85% (N = 86) loss of retention, and 1.73% (N = 10) loss of crown due to extraction.
CONCLUSION
Based on these findings, zirconia core restorations appear to be a reliable long-term solution for crowns and fixed dental prostheses.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE
The study suggests that zirconia restorations can be successfully used for long-term prostheses on natural teeth or implants supported. The study results provide clinicians valuable information when selecting prosthetic restorations material.

OBJECTIVES
To evaluate the longevity of cantilevered zirconia-based resin-bonded fixed partial dentures (RBFPDs) in replacing missing posterior teeth, as well as the quality of life and patient satisfaction experienced by those receiving zirconia RBFPDs.
METHODS
A prospective single-arm uncontrolled clinical trial was conducted to replace one or more missing premolars or molars with a span of 5 to 8 mm using cantilevered zirconia RBFPDs. Thirty-six participants with 40 prostheses were recruited and underwent a 3-year clinical evaluation. The retainer designs included a minimum thickness of 0.8mm, a minimum of 200° circumferential wraparound with an occlusal bar, and a connector dimension of 3 × 3 mm. Patient-reported outcomes, including patient satisfaction and Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP), were assessed.
RESULTS
The average age of participants was 45.8 years, and 72.5% were women. The success rate of the posterior zirconia RBFPDs was 76.2%, with an estimated mean survival duration of 46.1 months. The survival rate was 88.1%, with an estimated mean success duration of 49.4 months. Participants were highly satisfied with the treatment, achieving an average satisfaction score of 80.8 ± 11.9. Participants' total OHIP scores decreased from 52.3 to 39.6 after 3 years, indicating a significant improvement in oral health-related quality of life (P=0.009).
CONCLUSIONS
After 3 years, a moderately high survival rate and favourable patient-reported outcomes of posterior cantilevered zirconia RBFPDs were achieved. Therefore, it can be recommended as a conservative treatment option to replace missing posterior teeth, provided that retainer design considerations are taken into account.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Cantilevered zirconia RBFPDs for posterior teeth can serve as a conservative treatment option that is both aesthetically pleasing and biocompatible. It offers a more cost-effective alternative compared to dental implants, which are often prohibitively expensive for the majority of patients. This approach has the potential to greatly improve patient-reported outcomes.

BACKGROUND
Focal and florid cemento-osseous dysplasia are benign fibro-osseous lesions affecting the quality and quantity of the jawbones. This study aimed to determine the viability of implant-based approaches in the affected patients.
MAIN TEXT
Different scientific databases, including PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar, were searched until October 8, 2023, using a pre-determined search strategy. Two reviewers screened the retrieved reports and extracted the required information from the included studies. The eligibility criteria included English-language case reports/series or clinical trials. The JBI critical appraisal checklist for case reports was used to assess the methodological quality of the included studies. Three studies were deemed eligible to be included in this study out of the initial 202 records found. Five implants were placed in three patients, positioned in the proximity of the lesion area, without any additional treatment to remove the pathology. The mandibular posterior area was the affected site in all patients. Only one implant failed in one patient after 16 years, which was attributed to peri-implantitis and not the lesion. Other implants demonstrated successful maintenance over follow-up periods.
CONCLUSIONS
Although the number of the included records was relatively low to draw firm conclusions, it seems that implant-based treatments in patients with focal/florid cemento-osseous dysplasia could be viable, considering a conservative and well-planned approach.

Phosphate bioactive glass has been studied for its advanced biodegradability and active ion release capability. Our previous research found that phosphate glass containing (PO)-(NaO)-(TiO)-(CaO)-(SrO) or (ZnO) showed good biocompatibility with MG63 and hMSCs. This study further investigated the application of 5 mol% zinc oxide or 17.5 mol% strontium oxide in titanium-doped phosphate glass for bone tissue engineering. Ti-Ca-Na-Phosphate glasses, incorporating 5% zinc oxide or 17.5% strontium oxide, were made with melting quenching technology. The pre-osteoblast cell line MC3T3-E1 was cultured for indirect contact tests with graded diluted phosphate glass extractions and for direct contact tests by seeding cells on glass disks. The cell viability and cytotoxicity were analysed in vitro over 7 days. In vivo studies utilized the tibial defect model with or without glass implants. The micro-CT analysis was performed after surgery and then at 2, 6, and 12 weeks. Extractions from both zinc and strontium phosphate glasses showed no negative impact on MC3T3-E1 cell viability. Notably, non-diluted Zn-Ti-Ca-Na-phosphate glass extracts significantly increased cell viability by 116.8% (P < 0.01). Furthermore, MC3T3-E1 cells cultured with phosphate glass disks exhibited no increase in LDH release compared with the control group. Micro-CT images revealed that, over 12 weeks, both zinc-doped and strontium-doped phosphate glasses demonstrated good bone incorporation and longevity compared to the no-implant control. Titanium-doped phosphate glasses containing 5 mol% zinc oxide, or 17.5 mol% strontium oxide have promising application potential for bone regeneration research.

Prevalence, Location, and Variations of the Posterior Superior Alveolar Canal With Age and Gender in the Indian Population: A Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT)-Based Retrospective Study.
BACKGROUND
Enhancing the availability of bone in the vertical dimension for implant insertion is thought to be possible through implant site preparation using direct or indirect sinus lift. The posterior superior alveolar (PSA) canal is extremely vulnerable to trauma during this procedure. The anatomy of this region should be thoroughly evaluated to prevent traumatizing this artery and eventual perioperative bleeding. Due to a lack of relevant knowledge and the clinical importance of this problem, the position, diameter, detectability, and proximity of this canal to the alveolar ridge were assessed on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans which were the main objectives of this study.
METHODOLOGY
A total of 240 CBCT scans were examined, and the position of the PSA canal, its diameter, the perpendicular distance from the inferior border of the PSA canal to the alveolar crest, and the perpendicular distance from the inferior border of the canal to the maxillary sinus floor was measured.
RESULTS
Intraosseous PSA canals were the most prevalent, followed by intrasinusal and extraosseous canals. Males had larger canal diameters and greater distances between the maxillary sinus floor and alveolar crest and the canal (< 0.05).
CONCLUSION
CBCT was proven to be a useful method for assessing and localizing the PSA artery to prevent intraoperative bleeding and further complications.

The mechanical strength of magnesium implants undergoes a rapid decline after implantation due to bioabsorption, which can lead to the risk of rupture. To ensure sustained mechanical strength and initiate bioabsorption selectively upon specific external stimuli until the bone regains sufficient support, we developed a biosafe near-infrared light (NIR)-sensitive polymer coating using polycaprolactone (PCL) and TiC (MXenes). The synthetic MXene powders were characterized using SEM, EDS, and XRD, and the amount of MXenes had a proliferation-promoting effect on MC3T3-E1, as observed through cell assays. The PCL-MXene coating was successfully prepared on the magnesium surface using the casting coating method, and it can protect the magnesium surface for up to 28 days by decreasing the corrosion ratio. However, the coating can be easily degraded after exposure to NIR light for 20 minutes to expose the magnesium substrate, especially in a liquid environment. Meanwhile, the magnesium implant with the PCL-MXene coating has no cytotoxicity toward MC3T3-E1. These findings can provide a new solution for the development of controlled degradation implants.

BACKGROUND
Edentulism remains a major disability worldwide, especially among the elderly population, although the prevalence of complete edentulism has declined over the last decades. In Uganda, the prevalence of edentulism in people aged 20 years and above is 1.8%. The therapy for edentulous patients can be realized through the use of conventional removable complete dentures, implant-supported prostheses, and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CADCAM), however, the provision of removable complete dentures continues to be the predominant rehabilitation for edentulous patients. However, no published study has explored the lived experiences with removable complete dentures among the Ugandan population. The aim of the present study was to explore patients' lived experiences on the usage of removable complete dentures among Ugandan edentulous patients attending Makerere University Dental Hospital.
METHODS
This was a qualitative study approach using purposive sampling. Fifteen (15) respondents were selected across social demographics. Interviews were recorded and transcribed and themes were generated to draw a deeper meaning to the usage of removable complete dentures. A qualitative statistical package, Atlas Ti software was used to generate themes from the interviews followed by an interpretation of the generated data and the results were presented as text and in a table.
RESULTS
The reported key positive experiences due to removable complete denture rehabilitation were the improvement in speech, eating ability, regaining good facial appearance, better oral hygiene management, self-esteem and confidence to smile in public, and a feeling of completeness. However, respondents complained of pain and discomfort due to the looseness of dentures, inability to eat certain foods, and regular cleaning of dentures. The respondents did not go through proper informed consent processes before getting removable complete dentures.
CONCLUSION
The study found that patients were satisfied with their removable complete dentures rehabilitation due to the positive experiences registered, such as the ability to eat and talk well, and restoration of self-esteem, all of which improved their quality of life. However, they experience pain and discomfort due to the looseness of dentures.

OBJECTIVE
This study aimed to validate the integrated correlation between the buccal bone and gingival thickness of the anterior maxilla, and to gain insight into the reference plane selection when measuring these two tissues before treatment with implants.
METHODOLOGY
Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and model scans of 350 human subjects were registered in the coDiagnostiX software to obtain sagittal maxillary incisor sections. The buccal bone thickness was measured at the coronal (2, 4, and 6 mm apical to the cementoenamel junction [CEJ]) and apical (0, 2, and 4 mm coronal to the apex plane) regions. The buccal gingival thickness was measured at the supra-CEJ (0, 1mm coronal to the CEJ) and sub-CEJ regions (1, 2, 4, and 6 mm apical to the CEJ). Canonical correlation analysis was performed for intergroup correlation analysis and investigation of key parameters.
RESULTS
The mean thicknesses of the buccal bone and gingiva at different levels were 0.64~1.88 mm and 0.66~1.37 mm, respectively. There was a strong intergroup canonical correlation between the thickness of the buccal bone and that of the gingiva (r=0.837). The thickness of the buccal bone and gingiva at 2 mm apical to the CEJ are the most important indices with the highest canonical correlation coefficient and loadings. The most and least prevalent subgroups were the thin bone and thick gingiva group (accounting for 47.6%) and the thick bone and thick gingiva group (accounting for 8.6%).
CONCLUSION
Within the limitations of this retrospective study, the thickness of the buccal bone is significantly correlated with that of the buccal gingiva, and the 2 mm region apical to the CEJ is a vital plane for quantifying the thickness of these two tissues.

Orthopedic and dental implant failure continues to be a significant concern due to localized bacterial infections. Previous studies have attempted to improve implant surfaces by modifying their texture and roughness or coating them with antibiotics to enhance antibacterial properties for implant longevity. However, these approaches have demonstrated limited effectiveness. In this study, we attempted to engineer the titanium (Ti) alloy surface biomimetically at the nanometer scale, inspired by the cicada wing nanostructure using alkaline hydrothermal treatment (AHT) to simultaneously confer antibacterial properties and support the adhesion and proliferation of mammalian cells. The two modified Ti surfaces were developed using a 4 h and 8 h AHT process in 1 N NaOH at 230 °C, followed by a 2-hour post-calcination at 600 °C. We found that the control plates showed a relatively smooth surface, while the treatment groups (4 h & 8 h AHT) displayed nanoflower structures containing randomly distributed nano-spikes. The results demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in the contact angle of the treatment groups, which increased wettability characteristics. The 8 h AHT group exhibited the highest wettability and significant increase in roughness 0.72 ± 0.08 µm (P < 0.05), leading to more osteoblast cell attachment, reduced cytotoxicity effects, and enhanced relative survivability. The alkaline phosphatase activity measured in all different groups indicated that the 8 h AHT group exhibited the highest activity, suggesting that the surface roughness and wettability of the treatment groups may have facilitated cell adhesion and attachment and subsequently increased secretion of extracellular matrix. Overall, the findings indicate that biomimetic nanotextured surfaces created by the AHT process have the potential to be translated as implant coatings to enhance bone regeneration and implant integration.
