The relationship between the gut-brain-microbiome axis has gained great importance in the study of psychiatric disorders, as it may represent a new target for their treatment. To date, the available literature suggests that the microbiota may influence the pathophysiology of several diseases, including psychosis. The aim of this review is to summarize the clinical and preclinical studies that have evaluated the differences in microbiota as well as the metabolic consequences related to psychosis. Current data suggest that the genera and are increased in schizophrenia (SZ), as well as alterations in the glutamate-glutamine-GABA cycle, serum levels of tryptophan, kynurenic acid (KYNA), and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). There are still very few studies on early-onset psychosis, thus more studies are needed to be able to propose targeted therapies for a point when the disease has just started or has not yet progressed.

BACKGROUND
Bariatric surgery is the most effective method of morbid obesity treatment. Microbiota has many functions in human body and many of them remain to be unknown. The aim of this study was to establish if the composition of duodenal microbiota influences success rate of bariatric surgery.
METHODS
It was a prospective cohort study. The data concerning demographics and comorbidities was collected perioperatively. The duodenal biopsies were collected prior to surgery with the gastroscope. Then DNA analysis was conducted. The data connected to the operation outcomes was gathered after 6 and 12 months after surgery.
RESULTS
Overall, 32 patients were included and divided into two groups (successful - group 1 and unsuccessful - group 0) based on percentage excess weight loss after 6 months were created. The Total Actual Abundance was higher in group 0. In group 0 there was a significantly higher amount of Roseburia and Arthrobacter (p = 0.024, p = 0.027, respectively). Genus LDA effect size analysis showed Prevotella, Megasphaera and Pseudorhodobacter in group 1 to be significant. Whereas abundance of Roseburia and Arthrobacter were significant in group 0.
CONCLUSIONS
Duodenal microbiota composition may be a prognostic factor for the success of the bariatric surgery but further research on the larger group is needed.

Metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is rising in incidence and is an increasingly common cause of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Alterations in the gut microbiota have been shown to correlate with the development and progression of MAFLD. However, little is known regarding differences in the gut microbiomes of MAFLD patients and healthy cohorts, and subgroups at the abnormal activity of hepatic enzymes in China. In this study, we enrolled 81 MAFLD patients and 25 healthy volunteers. The fecal microbiota was assessed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metagenomic sequencing. The results suggested that Ruminococcus obeum and Alistipes were most enriched in healthy individuals when compared with MAFLD patients. Microbe-set Enrichment Analysis (MSEA) results showed Dorea, Lactobacillus and Megasphaera are enriched in MAFLD group. We also found that Alistipes has negatively related to serum glucose (GLU), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Moreover, the abundance of Dorea was found to be significantly overrepresented in the MAFLD patients and the degree of enrichment increased with the increasing abnormal liver enzyme. An increase in Dorea, combined with decreases in Alistipes appears to be characteristic of MAFLD patients. Further study of microbiota may provide a novel insight into the pathogenesis of MAFLD as well as a novel treatment strategy.

BACKGROUND
Probiotics are known to rebalance the gut microbiota in dysbiotic individuals, but their impact on the gut microbiome of healthy individuals is seldom studied. The current study is designed to assess the impact and safety of Bacillus coagulans (Weizmannia coagulans) microbial type culture collection 5856 (LactoSpore®) supplementation on microbiota composition in healthy Indian adults.
METHODS
The study participants (N = 30) received either LactoSpore (2 billion colony-forming units/capsule) or placebo for 28 days. The general and digestive health were assessed through questionnaires and safety by monitoring adverse events. Taxonomic profiling of the fecal samples was carried out by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing using the Illumina MiSeq platform. The bacterial persistence was enumerated by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction.
RESULTS
Gut health, general health, and blood biochemical parameters remained normal in all the participants. No adverse events were reported during the study. Metataxonomic analysis revealed minimal changes to the gut microbiome of otherwise healthy subjects and balance of Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes was maintained by LactoSpore. The relative abundance of beneficial bacteria like Prevotella, Faecalibacterium, Blautia, Megasphaera, and Ruminococcus showed an increase in probiotic-supplemented individuals. The quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed highly variable numbers of B. coagulans in feces before and after the study.
CONCLUSION
The present study results suggest that LactoSpore is safe for consumption and does not alter the gut microbiome of healthy individuals. Minor changes in a few bacterial species may have a beneficial outcome in healthy individuals. The results reiterate the safety of B. coagulans microbial type culture collection 5856 as a dietary supplement and provide a rationale to explore its effect on gut microbiome composition in individuals with dysbiosis.

Recent evidence emphasized the role of the microbiota in the etiopathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Indeed, it has been demonstrated that urinary tract infections are implicated in RA pathogenesis. However, a definitive association between the urinary tract microbiota and RA remains to be investigated. Urine samples from 39 patients affected by RA, including treatment-naive patients, and 37 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals were collected. In RA patients, the urinary microbiota showed an increase in microbial richness and a decrease in microbial dissimilarity, especially in treatment-naive patients. A total of 48 altered genera with different absolute quantities were detected in patients with RA. The 37 enriched genera included Proteus, , and , while the 11 deficient genera included , , , and . Notably, the more abundant genera in RA patients were correlated with the disease activity score of 28 joints-erythrocyte sedimentation rates (DAS28-ESR) and an increase in plasma B cells. Furthermore, the altered urinary metabolites, such as proline, citric acid, and oxalic acid, were positively associated with RA patients, and they were closely correlated with urinary microbiota. These findings suggested a strong association between the altered urinary microbiota and metabolites with disease severity and dysregulated immune responses in RA patients. We revealed that the profile of the urinary tract microbiota in RA featured with increased microbial richness and shifted taxa, associated with immunological and metabolic changes of the disease, underlining the interplay between urinary microbiota and host autoimmunity.

Rapid-reaction kinetics of the butyryl-CoA dehydrogenase component of the electron-bifurcating crotonyl-CoA-dependent NADH:ferredoxin oxidoreductase from Megasphaera elsdenii.
We have investigated the equilibrium properties and rapid-reaction kinetics of the isolated butyryl-CoA dehydrogenase (bcd) component of the electron-bifurcating crotonyl-CoA-dependent NADH:ferredoxin oxidoreductase (EtfAB-bcd) from Megasphaera elsdenii. We find that a neutral FADH• semiquinone accumulates transiently during both reduction with sodium dithionite and with NADH in the presence of catalytic concentrations of EtfAB. In both cases full reduction of bcd to the hydroquinone is eventually observed, but the accumulation of FADH• indicates that a substantial portion of reduction occurs in sequential one-electron processes rather than a single two-electron event. In rapid-reaction experiments following the reaction of reduced bcd with crotonyl-CoA and oxidized bcd with butyryl-CoA, long-wavelength-absorbing intermediates are observed that are assigned to bcd:crotonyl-CoA and bcd:butyryl-CoA charge-transfer complexes, demonstrating their kinetic competence in the course of the reaction. In the presence of crotonyl-CoA there is an accumulation of semiquinone that is unequivocally the anionic FAD• rather than the neutral FADH• seen in the absence of substrate, indicating that binding of substrate/product results in ionization of the bcd semiquinone. In addition to fully characterizing the rapid-reaction kinetics of both the oxidative and reductive half-reactions, our results demonstrate that one-electron processes play an important role in the reduction of bcd in EtfAB-bcd.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS
Intestinal microbiota is intrinsically linked to human health. Evidence suggests that the composition and function of the microbiome differs in those with schizophrenia compared with controls. It is not clear how these alterations functionally impact people with schizophrenia. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to combine and evaluate data on compositional and functional alterations in microbiota in patients with psychosis or schizophrenia.
STUDY DESIGN
Original studies involving humans and animals were included. The electronic databases PsycINFO, EMBASE, Web of Science, PubMed/MEDLINE, and Cochrane were systematically searched and quantitative analysis performed.
STUDY RESULTS
Sixteen original studies met inclusion criteria (1376 participants: 748 cases and 628 controls). Ten were included in the meta-analysis. Although observed species and Chao 1 show a decrease in diversity in people with schizophrenia compared with controls (SMD = -0.14 and -0.66 respectively), that did not reach statistical significance. We did not find evidence for variations in richness or evenness of microbiota between patients and controls overall. Differences in beta diversity and consistent patterns in microbial taxa were noted across studies. We found increases in Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and Megasphaera in schizophrenia groups. Variations in brain structure, metabolic pathways, and symptom severity may be associated with compositional alterations in the microbiome. The heterogeneous design of studies complicates a similar evaluation of functional readouts.
CONCLUSIONS
The microbiome may play a role in the etiology and symptomatology of schizophrenia. Understanding how the implications of alterations in microbial genes for symptomatic expression and clinical outcomes may contribute to the development of microbiome targeted interventions for psychosis.

Fecal samples from participants aged 60-80 were collected and sequenced by a high-throughput second-generation sequencer to explore the structural composition of gut microbiota in elderly patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). Comparison of gut microbiota between patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and healthy controls, α diversity and β diversity were statistically different. At the genus level, compared with the normal group, the abundance of A Blautia, Fusicatenibacter, Anaerostipes, Lachnospiraceae_ND3007_group, CAG-56, Eggerthella, Lachnospiraceae_FCS020_group and Olsenella were decreased significantly in the LC group. In contrast, the abundance of Escherichia-Shigella, Fusobacterium, Megasphaera, Veillonella, Tyzzerella_4, Prevotella_2 and Cronobacter increased significantly. The KEGG and COG pathway analyses showed that the dysbiosis of gut bacteria in primary liver carcinoma is associated with several pathways, including amino acid metabolism, replication and repair, nucleotide metabolism, cell motility, cell growth and death, and transcription. Age is negatively associated with the abundance of Bifidobacterium. Lachnospiraceae_ ND3007_ group, [Eubacterium]_hallii_group, Blautia, Fuscatenibacter and Anaerostipes are negatively correlated with ALT, AST and GGT levels (p < 0.05), respectively. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is positively associated with the abundance of Erysipelatoclostridium, Magasphaera, Prevotella 2, Escherichia-Shigella, Streptococcus and [Eubacterium]_eligens_group (p < 0.05), respectively. A random forest model showed that the genera Eggerthella, Anaerostipes, and Lachnospiraceae_ ND3007_ group demonstrated the best predictive capacity. The area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve of Eggerthella, Anaerostipes and Lachnospiraceae_ ND3007_ group are 0.791, 0.766 and 0.730, respectively. These data are derived from the first known gut microbiome study in elderly patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. Potentially, specific microbiota can be used as a characteristic index for screening, diagnosis, and prognosis of gut microbiota changes in elderly patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and even as a therapeutic clinical target.

Altered commensal microbiota composition has been associated with pediatric type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), but the causal relationship is still unclear. To search for potential pre-diagnostic biomarkers for pediatric T1D or IBD, we compared microbiota in saliva samples in a nested case-control design comprising children developing T1D (n = 52) or IBD (n = 21) and controls with a similar age, sex, and residential area (n = 79). The pre-diagnostic saliva microbiota alpha- and beta-diversity of children who would develop T1D (n = 27) or IBD (n = 14) minimally varied from that of controls. The relative abundances of were higher, while those of , , , , and were lower in children who would develop T1D. Within 2 years before diagnosis, the metabolic PWY-5677 pathway (converting succinate into butyrate) was lower in pre-T1D samples than in controls ( = 0.034). No significant pre-IBD differences were found. In conclusion, saliva microbiota diversity or composition were not successful predictors for pediatric T1D nor IBD. Intriguingly, the succinate fermentation pathway was predicted to be lowered before the onset of T1D. Thus, investigating functional pathways might provide a better approach in searching for biomarkers for autoimmune disease in the future.

Body lesions in pigs are a common welfare concern, particularly during the weaning period. These lesions can lead to pain, infection, and impaired mobility, resulting in reduced growth performance and increased mortality. Moreover, weaning stress can affect gut microbiota, immune response and increase the oxidative stress of piglets during this transition period. It has been hypothesised that social stress and body lesions could contribute to affect the gut microbiota, physiological and immune response of piglets. The study aims to evaluate the impact of the body lesions due to social stress on microbial profile, immune response, and oxidative status of weaned piglets. Lesion score (LS) on skin, tail, ear, neck, middle trunk, and hind quarters was measured 1 week (28 days of age, T1) and 7 weeks postweaning (T2) on 45 tail-docked pigs according to the method suggested from the Walfer Quality® (2009) on a scale from 0 to 2. Based on the LS, at T1, piglets were classified as High LS (n = 16), when LS was >1 in at least two of the areas considered, or Low LS (n = 29). At T2, based on the same scoring system and to the LS observed at T1, piglets were divided into four groups: High to Low LS (H-L, n = 11), High to High LS (H-H, n = 5), Low to Low LS (L-L, n = 21) and Low to High LS (L-H, n = 8). Blood and faecal samples were collected at T1 and T2. At T1, pigs with a high LS had a lower biological antioxidant potential compared with the L group (P < 0.02). At T2, the L-H group had a lower Reactive Oxygen Metabolites concentration compared with the H-H group (P = 0.03) while the L-L group had a lower concentration of Immunoglobulin A compared with H-H and L-H groups (P = 0.02 and P = 0.04, respectively). At T1, piglets with high LS had a different microbiota compared to piglets with low LS (R = 0.04, P < 0.01). Low LS pigs were characterised by a higher abundance of Firmicutes, Blautia, Eubacterium coprostanoligenes, Faecalibacterium, Megasphaera, Subdoligranulum (P.adj < 0.05), while pigs with high LS were characterised by higher abundance of Bacteroidota, Rikenellaceae RC9, Prevotellaceae UCG-003, uncultured-Lachnospiraceae and uncultured-Oscillospiraceae (P.adj < 0.05). At T2, the H-H group were characterised by Oscillospirales-UCG-010, H-L by Agatobachter and L-L by Alloprevotella (P.adj < 0.05). Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the relationship between body lesions, oxidative stress, and gut microbiota in weaned pigs.
