Cortisol monitoring in the agri-food sector is considered a valuable tool due to its direct correlation with growth, reproduction, the immune system, and overall animal welfare. Strategies to monitor this stress hormone and its correlation to food quality and security have been studied in fish farming and the livestock industry. This review discusses studies on monitoring cortisol in the food industry for the first time. The impact of cortisol on animal production, quality, and the security of food products, and the analytical procedures commonly implemented for sample pre-concentration and quantification by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, are reviewed and discussed according to the results published in the period 2012-2022. Aquaculture, or fish farming, is the leading agri-food sector, where cortisol's impact and usefulness are better known than in livestock. The determination of cortisol in fish not only allows for an increase in the production rate, but also the ability to monitor the water quality, enhancing the sustainable development of this industry. In cattle, further studies are needed since it has mainly been used to detect the administration of illicit substances. Current analytical control and monitoring techniques are expensive and often depend on invasive sampling, not allowing fast or real-time monitoring.

Biomarker development, improvement, and clinical implementation in the context of kidney disease have been a central focus of biomedical research for decades. To this point, only serum creatinine and urinary albumin excretion are well-accepted biomarkers in kidney disease. With their known blind spot in the early stages of kidney impairment and their diagnostic limitations, there is a need for better and more specific biomarkers. With the rise in large-scale analyses of the thousands of peptides in serum or urine samples using mass spectrometry techniques, hopes for biomarker development are high. Advances in proteomic research have led to the discovery of an increasing amount of potential proteomic biomarkers and the identification of candidate biomarkers for clinical implementation in the context of kidney disease management. In this review that strictly follows the PRISMA guidelines, we focus on urinary peptide and especially peptidomic biomarkers emerging from recent research and underline the role of those with the highest potential for clinical implementation. The Web of Science database (all databases) was searched on 17 October 2022, using the search terms "marker *" OR biomarker * AND "renal disease" OR "kidney disease" AND "proteome *" OR "peptid *" AND "urin *". English, full-text, original articles on humans published within the last 5 years were included, which had been cited at least five times per year. Studies based on animal models, renal transplant studies, metabolite studies, studies on miRNA, and studies on exosomal vesicles were excluded, focusing on urinary peptide biomarkers. The described search led to the identification of 3668 articles and the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, as well as abstract and consecutive full-text analyses of three independent authors to reach a final number of 62 studies for this manuscript. The 62 manuscripts encompassed eight established single peptide biomarkers and several proteomic classifiers, including CKD273 and IgAN237. This review provides a summary of the recent evidence on single peptide urinary biomarkers in CKD, while emphasizing the increasing role of proteomic biomarker research with new research on established and new proteomic biomarkers. Lessons learned from the last 5 years in this review might encourage future studies, hopefully resulting in the routine clinical applicability of new biomarkers.

The therapeutic response heterogeneity in acromegaly persists, despite the medical-surgical advances of recent years. Thus, personalized medicine implementation, which focuses on each patient, is justified. Metabolomics would decipher the molecular mechanisms underlying the therapeutic response heterogeneity. Identification of altered metabolic pathways would open new horizons in the therapeutic management of acromegaly. This research aimed to evaluate the metabolomic profile in acromegaly and metabolomics' contributions to understanding disease pathogenesis. A systematic review was carried out by querying four electronic databases and evaluating patients with acromegaly through metabolomic techniques. In all, 21 studies containing 362 patients were eligible. Choline, the ubiquitous metabolite identified in growth hormone (GH)-secreting pituitary adenomas (Pas) by in vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), negatively correlated with somatostatin receptors type 2 expression and positively correlated with magnetic resonance imaging T2 signal and Ki-67 index. Moreover, elevated choline and choline/creatine ratio differentiated between sparsely and densely granulated GH-secreting PAs. MRS detected low hepatic lipid content in active acromegaly, which increased after disease control. The panel of metabolites of acromegaly deciphered by mass spectrometry (MS)-based techniques mainly included amino acids (especially branched-chain amino acids and taurine), glyceric acid, and lipids. The most altered pathways in acromegaly were the metabolism of glucose (particularly the downregulation of the pentose phosphate pathway), linoleic acid, sphingolipids, glycerophospholipids, arginine/proline, and taurine/hypotaurine. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization coupled with MS imaging confirmed the functional nature of GH-secreting PAs and accurately discriminated PAs from healthy pituitary tissue.

Nowadays, incorrect apply of antibiotics to treat infections in honey has led to health risks for humans and antibiotic resistance. Current systematic review and meta-analysis conducted to study antibiotic residues in honey. Data were obtained through searching the databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and other internal databases. The pooled concentration of antibiotic residues was 5.032 (µg/kg) that ranged from 4.72 to 5.33 (µg/kg). The ranking of antibiotics concentration was found in order of fluoroquinolone (8.59 µg/kg) > tetracycline (5.68 µg/kg) > sulfonamides (5.54 µg/kg) > macrolides (4.19µg/kg), respectively. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method (37.9.7%), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method (34.4%), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method (27.5.8%) were the most used methods in various studies. In order to avoid contamination, proper use of antibiotics, placement of hives at a suitable distance from agricultural environment, and regular control of antibiotic residues in honey seems to be necessary.

BACKGROUND
Evidence suggests that Dachengqi and its modified decoctions are effective for treating abdominal pain, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and inflammation in various disease conditions. We performed a meta-analysis to ascertain the effectiveness of a series of chengqi decoctions in patients with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP).
METHODS
We searched Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane library, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biomedical Literature, Wanfang database and China Science and Technology Journal Database before August 2022 to identify eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Mortality and MODS were chosen as primary outcomes. Secondary outcomes included time until relief of abdominal pain, APACHE II score, complications, effectiveness, IL-6 and TNF-α levels. The risk ratio (RR) and standardized mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) were selected as effect measures. The quality of evidence was independently assessed by two reviewers using Grading of Recommendations Assessment Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system.
RESULTS
Twenty-three RCTs (n = 1865) were finally included. The results showed that, compared with routine therapies, chengqi-series decoctions (CQSDs) treatment groups were associated with lower mortality rate (RR: 0.41, 95%CI: 0.32 to 0.53, p = 0.992) and incidence of MODS (RR: 0.48, 95%CI: 0.36 to 0.63, p = 0.885). They also reduced remission time of abdominal pain (SMD: -1.66, 95%CI: -1.98 to -1.35, p = 0.000), complications (RR: 0.52, 95%CI: 0.39 to 0.68, p = 0.716), APACHE II score (SMD: -1.04, 95%CI:-1.55 to -0.54, p = 0.003), IL-6 (SMD: -1.5, 95%CI: -2.16 to -0.85, p = 0.000), TNF-α (SMD: -1.18, 95%CI: -1.71 to -0.65, p = 0.000), and improved curative effectiveness (RR:1.22, 95%CI: 1.14 to 1.31, p = 0.757). The certainty of the evidence for these outcomes was low to moderate.
CONCLUSION
CQSDs seem to be effective therapy for SAP patients with notable reductions in mortality, MODS and abdominal pain, with low quality evidence. Large-scale, multi-center RCTs that are more meticulous are advised in order to produce superior evidence.

The introduction of synthetic nicotine by the tobacco industry, also promoted as tobacco-free nicotine, presented new challenges for analytical chemists working in tobacco regulatory science to develop and optimize new methods to assess new nicotine parameters, namely enantiomer ratio and source. We conducted a systematic literature review of the available analytical methods to detect the nicotine enantiomer ratio and the source of nicotine using PubMed and Web of Science databases. Methods to detect nicotine enantiomers included polarimetry, nuclear magnetic resonance, and gas and liquid chromatography. We also covered methods developed to detect the source of nicotine either indirectly via determining the nicotine enantiomer ratio or the detection of tobacco-specific impurities or directly using the isotope ratio enrichment analysis by nuclear magnetic resonance (site-specific natural isotope fractionation and site-specific peak intensity ratio) or accelerated mass spectrometry. This review presents an accessible summary of all these analytical methods.

OBJECTIVES
This review systematically examined the associations between chronic stress and hair cortisol concentration (HCC) in children, and the potential modification effects of type, measurement period and scales of chronic stress, child age and sex, hair length and HCC measurement method, characteristics of study site, and congruence between time periods measured for chronic stress and HCC.
METHODS
Pubmed, Wed of Science, and APA PsycINFO were systematically searched for articles examining the association between chronic stress and HCC.
RESULTS
Thirteen studies from five countries with 1,455 participants were included in the systematic review and nine studies were included in the meta-analysis. Meta-analysis revealed that chronic stress was associated with HCC (pooled-r = 0.09, 95 % CI: 0.03, 0.16). Stratified analyses revealed that type, measurement time and scales of chronic stress, hair length and measurement method of HCC, and the congruence between time periods measured for chronic stress and HCC modified such correlations. The positive correlations between chronic stress and HCC were significant for studies measuring chronic stress as stressful life events, assessing chronic stress within the past six months, extracting HCC from 1 cm, 3 cm, or 6 cm of hair, measuring HCC by LC-MS/MS, or having congruence between time periods measured for chronic stress and HCC. The potential modifying effects of sex and country developmental status could not be concluded due to the limited number of studies included.
CONCLUSIONS
Chronic stress was positively correlated with HCC, varying by characteristics and measurements of chronic stress and HCC. HCC could be a biomarker for chronic stress among children.

AIMS
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) results from an autoimmune attack of the pancreatic β cells that progresses to dysglycemia and symptomatic hyperglycemia. Current biomarkers to track this evolution are limited, with development of islet autoantibodies marking the onset of autoimmunity and metabolic tests used to detect dysglycemia. Therefore, additional biomarkers are needed to better track disease initiation and progression. Multiple clinical studies have used proteomics to identify biomarker candidates. However, most of the studies were limited to the initial candidate identification, which needs to be further validated and have assays developed for clinical use. Here we curate these studies to help prioritize biomarker candidates for validation studies and to obtain a broader view of processes regulated during disease development.
METHODS
This systematic review was registered with Open Science Framework (DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/N8TSA). Using PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic search of proteomics studies of T1D in the PubMed to identify putative protein biomarkers of the disease. Studies that performed mass spectrometry-based untargeted/targeted proteomic analysis of human serum/plasma of control, pre-seroconversion, post-seroconversion, and/or T1D-diagnosed subjects were included. For unbiased screening, 3 reviewers screened all the articles independently using the pre-determined criteria.
RESULTS
A total of 13 studies met our inclusion criteria, resulting in the identification of 251 unique proteins, with 27 (11%) being identified across 3 or more studies. The circulating protein biomarkers were found to be enriched in complement, lipid metabolism, and immune response pathways, all of which are found to be dysregulated in different phases of T1D development. We found a subset of 3 proteins (C3, KNG1 & CFAH), 6 proteins (C3, C4A, APOA4, C4B, A2AP & BTD) and 7 proteins (C3, CLUS, APOA4, C6, A2AP, C1R & CFAI) have consistent regulation between multiple studies in samples from individuals at pre-seroconversion, post-seroconversion and post-diagnosis compared to controls, respectively, making them strong candidates for clinical assay development.
CONCLUSIONS
Biomarkers analyzed in this systematic review highlight alterations in specific biological processes in T1D, including complement, lipid metabolism, and immune response pathways, and may have potential for further use in the clinic as prognostic or diagnostic assays.

INTRODUCTION
The diagnosis of pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI) is challenging. The C mixed triglyceride breath test (C MTGT) has emerged as a promising diagnostic method. However, there is need to assimilate high quality evidence to understand its accuracy and address variation in the conduct of the test. This systematic review aims to appraise the existing literature on the methodology and accuracy of the C MTGT.
METHODS
A systematic literature search of PUBMED, MEDLINE, and EMBASE databases identified articles describing the use of the C MTGT in the analysis of pancreatic function in adults. Data extraction addressed each methodological step in detail. These were combined in a narrative synthesis. For quantitative analysis, those studies within this search that assessed the accuracy of the C MTGT were selected.
RESULTS
37 studies were included for qualitative review, 6 assessed sensitivity and specificity of the C MTGT against another measure of PEI and were included in quantitative synthesis. Areas with a majority consensus were pre-test overnight fasting, a test meal with a lipid load of at least 10 g, within-test control of exercise and dietary intake, breath sampling every 30 min and the preference of isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) for analysis. Good evidence suggests there is no benefit to extend the total timeframe of breath sampling beyond 6 h. Areas of uncertainty are a) Duration of PERT cessation b) the addition of metoclopramide, c) the ideal test meal and d) if the time frame can be shortened. Quantitative analysis among 6 studies demonstrated a pooled sensitivity and specificity of the C MTGT for diagnosing PEI of 0.84 (95% CI: 0.73-0.91) and 0.87 (95% CI: 0.79-0.93) respectively.
CONCLUSION
There is yet to emerge a clear standard of breath test methodology that is validated for all causes of PEI and suitable for routine use. The accuracy of the C MTGT for diagnosing PEI is encouraging when compared to other measures. We present a suggested set protocol based on the current literature and identify areas that need further, high quality evidence. With refinement, the C MTGT could become a valuable, non-invasive PEI diagnostic tool that could be used outside of specialist centres.

BACKGROUND
Liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) is a popular approach for metabolomics data acquisition and requires many data processing software tools. The FAIR Principles - Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability - were proposed to promote open science and reusable data management, and to maximize the benefit obtained from contemporary and formal scholarly digital publishing. More recently, the FAIR principles were extended to include Research Software (FAIR4RS).
AIM OF REVIEW
This study facilitates open science in metabolomics by providing an implementation solution for adopting FAIR4RS in the LC-HRMS metabolomics data processing software. We believe our evaluation guidelines and results can help improve the FAIRness of research software.
KEY SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS OF REVIEW
We evaluated 124 LC-HRMS metabolomics data processing software obtained from a systematic review and selected 61 software for detailed evaluation using FAIR4RS-related criteria, which were extracted from the literature along with internal discussions. We assigned each criterion one or more FAIR4RS categories through discussion. The minimum, median, and maximum percentages of criteria fulfillment of software were 21.6%, 47.7%, and 71.8%. Statistical analysis revealed no significant improvement in FAIRness over time. We identified four criteria covering multiple FAIR4RS categories but had a low %fulfillment: (1) No software had semantic annotation of key information; (2) only 6.3% of evaluated software were registered to Zenodo and received DOIs; (3) only 14.5% of selected software had official software containerization or virtual machine; (4) only 16.7% of evaluated software had a fully documented functions in code. According to the results, we discussed improvement strategies and future directions.
