OBJECTIVE
This systematic review aimed at assessing the effect of the repositioned bone lid on bone augmentation in lateral sinus lift in pre-clinical in vivo and clinical studies. Secondary aims were to report on the healing of the bone window and to assess the implant survival rate.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
Animal and human studies comparing lateral maxillary sinus floor elevation in combination or not with the repositioned bone lid were retrieved from MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science and Cochrane online library. Studies published in English up to April 2022 and reporting on histological and/or radiographic outcomes were considered. Case reports, case series and reviews were excluded. A hand search was also conducted. Risk of bias was assessed and meta-analysis performed to investigate the effect of the bone lid on new bone formation.
RESULTS
After screening, 5 animal studies (4 in rabbits, 1 in sheep) and 2 clinical studies (1 RCT, 1 case-control) were included. Meta-analysis confirmed a higher new bone formation in rabbits at 2 and 8 weeks using the bone lid. The two clinical studies investigated lateral sinus lift with concomitant implant placement and reported similar results and high short-term implant success rate in both test and control groups.
CONCLUSIONS
The meta-analysis provided moderate evidence that the repositioned bone lid favored the formation of new bone to a higher extent as compared to resorbable membranes in animal studies. Implant success seems not to be influenced by the technique in the short term.

Implant dentistry has become a popularized means of replacing damaged or missing teeth. Although it has become common practice, there are accounts of implants displacing into surrounding structures, commonly the maxillary sinus. We present the case of a 54-year-old man who presented with chronic left sided pain and pressure found to be secondary to a displaced implant obstructing the left maxillary outflow sinus tract. A systematic review was conducted to assess the current management and treatment options for dental implants displaced into the maxillary sinus. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) and the lateral window approach were both found to be safe techniques with minimal postoperative complications.

In the attempt to reduce the invasiveness of a transcrestal sinus floor elevation procedure, different aspects must be considered; that is, the minimization of intra- and postsurgery morbidity, the reduction of treatment time, and the simplification/elimination of the reconstructive technology. Within this context, a systematic literature search was performed for controlled clinical trials evaluating the impact of one or more of these aspects on transcrestal sinus floor elevation invasiveness. Nineteen articles (15 studies) were included. Overall, the results confirmed that transcrestal sinus floor elevation is a minimally invasive and effective option for bone augmentation in the edentulous, atrophic posterior maxilla. By using powered instruments rather than manual osteotomes and hand mallet, the invasiveness of transcrestal sinus floor elevation can be further reduced without affecting its clinical effectiveness. To impact effectively on morbidity, the key elements to consider when selecting instruments for transcrestal sinus floor elevation are (a) their availability as a standardized sequence, to be adapted on predetermined residual bone height, and (b) the possibility to control pressure (eg, with screwable osteotomes) and/or instrument excursion (eg, with stop devices) to fracture the maxillary sinus floor. Among powered instruments, a standardized sequence of drills incorporating a trephine drill seem to be particularly indicated, due to reduced chair time, high tolerability for the patient, and the possibility to isolate a bone core to implement histomorphometric outcomes. At molar extraction sites with an interradicular septum characterized by a height of at least 4 mm, immediate transcrestal sinus floor elevation and implant placement can be considered a valid option to shorten treatment time.

BACKGROUND
Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Lung cancer metastasis to oral region is very rare. Very few research work has been conducted till date to analyse the jaw bone metastasis from Lung cancer as the primary source. The goal of this research was to examine published cases of jaw bone metastasis from lung cancer as the sole primary source from 1st December 1961 to 31st December 2021 and to learn about their characteristics.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
An electronic search of the published English literature was performed in PubMed/ Medline, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Research gate databases, using keywords like 'Lung cancer', OR/AND 'Lung carcinoma', OR/AND 'Metastasis', OR/AND 'Primary', OR/AND 'Source', OR/AND 'Oral cavity' OR/AND 'Jaw', OR/ AND 'Mandible', OR/AND 'Maxilla', OR/ AND 'Temporomandibular joint', OR/ AND 'Condyle', OR/ AND 'Ramus', OR/ AND 'Maxillary sinus', AND Initial', OR/ AND 'Treatment', OR/AND 'Prognosis', OR/ AND 'Follow-up', OR/AND 'Recurrence', OR/ AND 'Survival rate'. We also searched all related journals manually. Reference list of all articles was also checked. Data extracted were tabulated and summarized.
RESULTS
In total, we found 60 relevant publications with 66 patients in our research. The prognosis was poor, with a survival time of 1 week to 1.5 years. The most prevalent diagnosed metastatic lung cancer to jaw bones was adenocarcinoma and mandible was the predominant site.
CONCLUSIONS
Jaw bone metastasis from lung cancer is rare and has a bad prognosis. Because of their resemblance to other jaw problems and late clinical signs, these lesions go unnoticed the majority of the time, making detection difficult. More cases need to be published in order to raise awareness of these lesions and gain a better understanding of their characteristics. Jaw bone, lung cancer, metastasis, primary, prognosis.

This systematic review aimed to answer the question, "Are paranasal measurements obtained with multislice computed tomography able to accurately estimate sex?" This PROSPERO-registered systematic review included six databases and gray literature. Meta-analysis of linear and volumetric data was performed using a random-effects model, mean differences (MDs), and inverse variance. The QUADAS-2 tool-related risk of bias (RoB) and certainty evidence (GRADE approach) were assessed. A total of 1651 articles were initially selected from the main electronic databases for title and abstract screening. After removing duplicates and studies that did not meet the inclusion criteria, 18 studies were eligible for the meta-analysis. The screened studies included 2507 computed tomography of non-pathologic paranasal sinuses of adults aged between 18 and 40 years. Frontal sinus (FS) width (-4.89 mm; p < 0.00001) and maxillary sinus (MS) height (-3.73 mm; p < 0.00001) showed the greatest MD between females and males. Regarding volume, the MD was significant (p < 0.00001) in both paranasal sinuses (-3.01 and -1.04 cm , respectively). The best sensitivity (ability to identify males) and specificity (ability to identify females) were found for the anteroposterior (72.3%) and intermaxillary (69%) MS distances, respectively. In general, all studies exhibited low RoB and applicability concerns. The certainty of the evidence was categorized as very low to moderate. Both paranasal sinuses were shown to be dimorphic structures, which could be valuable tools for forensic identification using the FS width and MS anteroposterior distance measurements. However, heterogeneity among studies must be considered.

This systematic review aimed to evaluate computed tomographic scans for volumetric bone gain following lateral sinus floor augmentation of the atrophic posterior maxilla after the use of various bone-grafting materials. The databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Registry of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and SCOPUS were used for a comprehensive search for all potentially eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs), without language restrictions, from the beginning of each database until June 2021. The predictor variables for this review were autogenous bone (AB), allografts (AG), xenografts (XG), and alloplastic bone (AP), which were assessed individually and in combination with the inclusion of growth factors with XGs. The outcome variable was the graft volume on cone beam computerized tomographic (CBCT) scans. Seven RCTs with a short-term observation period were included. Topographical analyses of all graft materials identified a volumetric reduction at 6 months postgrafting, compared with values immediately after graft placement. The volumetric reduction occurred regardless of the type of bone-grafting material. The largest volumetric gain over baseline, pregraft values, was found in the AG+XG group. Autografts, the present gold standard bone graft, showed a high resorption rate and inferior volumetric increase when compared with alternative grafting combinations. AG and XG also showed a significant difference with less volumetric gain than AP and their combinations. No difference was detected between AP and AG+AP. However, there was significantly less volumetric gain for AP alone compared with AG+XG and XG-growth factor combinations. As a result, these findings suggest significant advantages to new bone formation using grafting materials in combination. To achieve a better understanding of topographical variables related to various grafting materials, more clinically focused RCTs, with sufficient statistical power to control for confounding factors, are needed.

Development of an optimized preoperative computed tomography imaging checklist for endoscopic sinus surgery utilizing a systematic review of the literature and the modified Delphi method.
BACKGROUND
Critical review of computed tomography (CT) imaging is essential in preoperative planning for endoscopic sinus surgery. In this study, we used a systematic review and a modified Delphi method to develop a comprehensive checklist that facilitates preoperative review of sinus CT imaging.
METHODS
We performed a systematic review of PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases to identify existing checklists developed to evaluate sinus CT imaging. An inclusive list of items from these checklists was compiled and a modified Delphi methodology was used to assign ranked priority. The Delphi process involved 14 rhinologists and had three phases: an initial survey with Likert priority (scale of 1-9) and two rounds of live discussions followed by survey to confirm consensus.
RESULTS
Ninety-seven possible checklist items were identified from a systematic review and panelist input. On initial survey, 63 items reached a consensus score of 7+, and 13 items had near consensus scores between 6 and 7; two of these 13 borderline items were retained after subsequent panelist discussion. The resulting items were consolidated into an 11-item disease checklist and a 24-item anatomical checklist; the anatomical checklist was further divided into six subsections: nasal cavity, maxillary, ethmoid, sphenoid, frontal, skull base, and orbit. Additionally, panelists identified six core aspects of patient history to consider prior to surgery.
CONCLUSIONS
After establishing content validity through a systematic literature review and a modified Delphi method, we developed a comprehensive checklist for preoperative sinus CT imaging review; implementation and evaluation of validity among trainees will suggest overall utility.

BACKGROUND
The use of biologics may be indicated for alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) and reconstruction (ARR), and implant site development (ISD). The present systematic review aimed to analyze the effect of autologous blood-derived products (ABPs), enamel matrix derivative (EMD), recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor-BB (rhPDGF-BB), and recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2), on the outcomes of ARP/ARR and ISD therapy (i.e., alveolar ridge augmentation [ARA] and maxillary sinus floor augmentation [MSFA]).
METHODS
An electronic search for eligible articles published from January 2000 to October 2021 was conducted. Randomized clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of ABPs, EMD, rhBMP-2, and rhPDGF-BB for ARP/ARR and ISD were included according to pre-established eligibility criteria. Data on linear and volumetric dimensional changes, histomorphometric findings, and a variety of secondary outcomes (i.e., clinical, implant-related, digital imaging, safety, and patient-reported outcome measures [PROMs]) were extracted and critically analyzed. Risk of bias assessment of the selected investigations was also conducted.
RESULTS
A total of 39 articles were included and analyzed qualitatively. Due to the high level of heterogeneity across studies, quantitative analyses were not feasible. Most studies in the topic of ARP/ARR revealed that the use of biologics rendered similar results compared with conventional protocols. However, when juxtaposed to unassisted healing or socket filling using collagen sponges, the application of biologics did contribute to attenuate post-extraction alveolar ridge atrophy in most investigations. Additionally, histomorphometric outcomes were positively influenced by the application of biologics. The use of biologics in ARA interventions did not yield superior clinical or radiographic outcomes compared with control therapies. Nevertheless, ABPs enhanced new bone formation and reduced the likelihood of early wound dehiscence. The use of biologics in MSFA interventions did not translate into superior clinical or radiographic outcomes. It was observed, though, that the use of some biologics may promote bone formation during earlier stages of healing. Only four clinical investigations evaluated PROMs and reported a modest beneficial impact of the use of biologics on pain and swelling. No severe adverse events in association with the use of the biologics evaluated in this systematic review were noted.
CONCLUSIONS
Outcomes of therapy after post-extraction ARP/ARR and ARA in edentulous ridges were comparable among different therapeutic modalities evaluated in this systematic review. Nevertheless, the use of biologics (i.e., PRF, EMD, rhPDGF-BB, and rhBMP-2) in combination with a bone graft material generally results into superior histomorphometric outcomes and faster wound healing compared with control groups.

The aim of this systematic review was to determine the prevalence of the canalis sinuosus (CS) and accessory canals of the canalis sinuosus (ACCS) as identified on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Online searches were conducted in the MEDLINE (via PubMed), Scopus, LILACS, Cochrane CENTRAL, Web of Science, and SIGLE (via OpenGrey) databases. Primary studies that determined the prevalence of canalis sinuosus and/or its anatomical variations using CBCT were included. The risk of bias assessment was performed using the AQUA tool. The quality effects model using double arcsine transformation was used for the meta-analysis of prevalence. Heterogeneity, publication bias, and sensitivity analyses were performed. Of 3237 initial results, 17 papers were included for systematic review. The meta-analysis comprising 1994 patients showed a pooled prevalence of CS of 0.80 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.51-0.99; P = 0.001; I = 99%). Publication bias analysis revealed minor asymmetry (LFK index 1.84). The meta-analysis of 4605 patients showed a pooled prevalence of ACCS of 0.54 (95% CI 0.38-0.69; P = 0.001; I = 99%). The sensitivity analysis showed a pooled prevalence of ACCS of 0.53 (95% CI 0.32-0.74; P = 0.001; I = 99%) for studies with ≥ 1000 patients and 0.55 (95% CI 0.33-0.76; P = 0.001; I = 98%) for studies with< 1000 patients. Canalis sinuosus showed a pooled prevalence of 0.80 and ACCS showed a pooled prevalence of 0.54; hence both should be considered as anatomical structures, which means that they are present in most people. Surgeons must be aware of the CS and ACCS on CBCT analysis during pre-surgical planning. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER: CRD42020154195.

Neuroradiology Oct 2022To comprehensively summarize the radiological characteristics of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related multiphenotypic sinonasal carcinomas (HMSCs).
PURPOSE
To comprehensively summarize the radiological characteristics of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related multiphenotypic sinonasal carcinomas (HMSCs).
METHODS
We reviewed the findings for patients with HMSCs who underwent computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and included nine cases from nine publications that were identified through a systematic review and three cases from our institution. Two board-certified radiologists reviewed and evaluated the radiological images.
RESULTS
The locations in almost all cases included the nasal cavity (11/12, 91.7%). The involved paranasal sinuses included the ethmoid sinus (6/12, 50.0%) and maxillary sinus (3/12, 25.0%). The mean long diameter of the tumors was 46.3 mm. The margins in 91.7% (11/12) of the cases were well-defined and smooth. Heterogeneous enhancement on contrast-enhanced CT, heterogeneous high signal intensities on T2-weighted images and heterogeneous enhancement on gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted images were noted in 2/2, 5/5, and 8/8 cases, respectively. Mean apparent diffusion coefficient values in two cases of our institution were 1.17 and 1.09 × 10 mm/s. Compressive changes in the surrounding structures were common (75%, 9/12). Few cases showed intraorbital or intracranial extension. None of the cases showed a perineural spread, neck lymph node metastasis, or remote lesions.
CONCLUSIONS
We summarized the CT and MRI findings of HMSCs. Knowledge of such characteristics is expected to facilitate prompt diagnosis and appropriate management.
