PURPOSE
Essential oils from various plants have diverse therapeutic properties and are researched extensively. They have applications in medicine, aromatherapy, microbiology, agriculture, livestock, and the food industry, benefiting the population.
METHODS
This systematic review followed the PRISMA verification protocol. The study focused on the anti-inflammatory effects, nutraceutical properties, antioxidant and antibacterial activity of essential oils in lemon, orange, cumin, cinnamon, coriander, rosemary, thyme, and parsley. We also looked at their presence in the diet, their effect, their mechanism of action on health, and the most important active compounds. The search was conducted in the PubMed database for the last 12 years of publications, including , , and online cell model tests.
RESULTS
Essential oils have been shown to have multiple health benefits, primarily due to their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. The mechanism of action of cinnamon oil alters bacterial membranes, modifies lipid profiles, and inhibits cell division, giving a potential benefit in protection against colitis. On the other hand, a significant improvement was observed in the diastolic pressure of patients with metabolic syndrome when supplementing them with cumin essential oil. The antimicrobial properties of coriander essential oil, especially its application in seafood like tilapia, demonstrate efficacy in improving health and resistance to bacterial infections. Cumin essential oil treats inflammation. Parsley essential oil is an antioxidant. Orange peel oil is antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, and pro-oxidative. Lemon essential oil affects mouse intestinal microbiota. Thyme essential oil protects the colon against damage and DNA methylation. Carnosic acid in rosemary oil can reduce prostate cancer cell viability by modifying the endoplasmic reticulum function.
CONCLUSION AND DISCUSSION
Essential oils have many therapeutic and antiparasitic properties. They are beneficial to human health in many ways. However, to understand their potential benefits, more research is needed regarding essential oils such as coriander, parsley, rosemary, cumin, and thyme. These research gaps are relevant since they restrict understanding of the possible benefits of these crucial oils for health-related contexts.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS
Anesthesiologists prefer ketamine for certain surgeries due to its effectiveness as a non-competitive inhibitor of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor in the brain. Recently, this agent has also shown promise as an antidepressant. However, ketamine can cause hallucinogenic effects and is sometimes abused as an illicit drug. Ketamine abuse has been associated with liver and bile duct complications. This systematic study aims to better understand cholangiopathy in ketamine abusers by reviewing case reports.
METHODS AND MATERIAL
In this systematic review, a comprehensive literature search was conducted with the terms "biliary tract diseases" and "ketamine". Case reports and case series of adult patients with documented ketamine abuse and reported cholangiopathy or biliary tract disease were included. We extracted the data of relevant information and the results were reported through narrative synthesis and descriptive statistics.
RESULTS
A total of 48 studies were initially identified, and 11 studies were finally included in the review. The mean age of the patients was 25.88 years. Of the 17 patients, 64.7% were men. Symptoms often included abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Most patients were discharged with improved symptoms and liver function. Common bile duct dilation and other findings were observed in imaging results and other diagnostic studies.
CONCLUSION
This review highlights the diverse presentations and diagnostic modalities used in ketamine-induced cholangiography. These patients tend to be young men with deranged liver function tests and abdominal pain, which should be taken into consideration. These patients often require a multidisciplinary approach in their management.

BACKGROUND
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) results from gene-environment interactions over the lifetime. These interactions are captured by epigenetic changes, such as DNA methylation. This systematic review synthesizes evidence from epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS) related to COPD and lung function.
METHODS
Systematic literature search on PubMed, Embase and CINAHL databases, identified 1947 articles that investigated epigenetic changes associated with COPD/lung function; 17 of them met our eligibility criteria from which data was manually extracted. Differentially methylated positions (DMPs) and/or annotated genes, were considered replicated if identified by ≥2 studies with a p<1 x 10-4.
RESULTS
Ten studies profiled DNA methylation changes in blood and 7 in respiratory samples, including surgically resected lung tissue (n=3), small airways epithelial brushings (n=2), bronchoalveolar lavage (n=1) and sputum (n=1). Main results showed: (1) high variability in study design, covariates and effect sizes, which prevented a formal meta-analysis; (2) in blood samples, 51 DMPs were replicated in relation to lung function and 12 related to COPD; (3) in respiratory samples, 42 DMPs were replicated in relation to COPD but none in relation to lung function; and, (4) in COPD vs. control studies, 123 genes (2.6% of total) were shared between ≥1 blood and ≥1 respiratory sample and associated with chronic inflammation, ion transport and coagulation.
CONCLUSIONS
There is high heterogeneity across published COPD/lung function EWAS studies. A few genes (n=123; 2.6%) were replicated in blood and respiratory samples, suggesting that blood can recapitulate some changes in respiratory tissues. These findings have implications for future research.

The infiltration of substances into the buttocks for esthetic purposes can cause local or systemic damage. These infiltrated substances, known as adjuvants, foreign substances, and polymers, often lack sufficient and frequently controversial evidence. To identify the systemic complications associated with substances locally infiltrated in the buttocks for treatment, we conducted a systematic review following the PRISMA criteria. Of 275 publications, 29 met the eligibility criteria: 3 systematic reviews, 6 case series, and 20 case reports. The study comprises 463 cases, mainly women (87%), with an average age of 39.94 years. The average time between infiltrations was 7.65 years. Infiltrated substances included silicone, oils, methyl methacrylate, guaiacol, sodium gadolinium, collagen, paraffin, and other unknown substances. The complications fell into three categories: local, systemic with inflammatory-immune response, and renal damage due to hypercalcemia induced by the granulomatosis caused by the substance. Treatment lacked uniformity, mainly focusing on the main effect. Surgical resection of affected tissue resulted in local and systemic improvement (renal, hypercalcemia, or inflammatory-immune) for most patients. Patients who received comprehensive treatment based on inflammatory-immune control, control of renal involvement, and resection of the tissue area that contained large amounts of the infiltrated substance had a better prognosis than those with diffuse infiltration and delayed treatment.

The effect of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonists on the mismatch negativity of event-related potentials and its regulatory factors: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
This study investigates the influence of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonists on the mismatch negativity (MMN) components of event-related potentials (ERPs) in healthy subjects and explores whether NMDAR antagonists have different effects on MMN components under different types of antagonists, drug dosages, and deviant stimuli. We conducted a comprehensive literature search of PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library from inception to August 1, 2023 for studies comparing the MMN components between the NMDAR antagonist intervention group and the control group (or baseline). All statistical analyses were performed using Stata version 12.0 software. Sixteen articles were included in the systematic review: 13 articles were included in the meta-analysis of MMN amplitudes, and seven articles were included in the meta-analysis of MMN latencies. The pooled analysis showed that NMDAR antagonists reduced MMN amplitudes [SMD (95% CI) = 0.32 (0.16, 0.47), P < 0.01, I = 47.3%, p < 0.01] and prolonged MMN latencies [SMD (95% CI) = 0.31 (0.13, 0.49), P = 0.16, I = 28.3%, p < 0.01]. The type of antagonist drug regulates the effect of NMDAR antagonists on MMN amplitudes. Different antagonists, doses of antagonists, and types of deviant stimuli can also have different effects on MMN. These findings indicate a correlation between NMDAR and MMN, which may provide a foundation for the application of ERP-MMN in the early identification of NMDAR encephalitis.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE
Orthodontic acrylic resins containing antimicrobial photocatalytic nanoparticles aims to reduce oral lesions including denture stomatitis and white spot lesions but they should not imperil its mechanical properties. This systematic review was done to evaluate the effect of various photocatalytic nanoparticles on the flexural strength (FS) of acrylic resins.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
We systematically searched the PubMed/Medline, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases from January 2018 to October 2023. The review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, and the quality of the studies was evaluated using the QUIN tool, which is specifically designed to assess the risk of bias in vitro studies.
RESULTS
Following screening of 1016 initial records, 23 studies were deemed eligible for inclusion. The addition of photocatalytic nanoparticles, such as emodin (Emo), curcumin (Cur), Cur nisin (CurNis), zeolite/zinc oxide (Zeo/ZnO), and Ulva lactuca (U. lactuca), to acrylic resins resulted in a reduction in FS, with the extent of reduction dependent on the nanoparticle concentration. Specifically, the addition of Emo (≥0.5 %), Cur (≥0.5 %), CurNis (≥5 %), Zeo/ZnO (≥2), and U. lactuca (≥1 %) to acrylic resins significantly decreased FS. Conversely, the inclusion of ZnO and titanium dioxide (TiO) in acrylic resins improved FS, but higher concentrations (≥5 % for TiO) had a limited positive effect.
CONCLUSION
Our study supports the use of low concentrations of photocatalytic nanoparticles, such as ZnO (≤2 %), TiO (≤3 %), Emo (≤0.5 %), Cur (≤0.5 %), CurNis (≤5 %), and U. lactuca (≤1 %), in orthodontic acrylic resins without compromising FS.

Osteoarthritis is a leading cause of disability in the world. The scientific literature highlights the critical importance of epigenetic regulatory effects, intertwined with biomechanical and biochemical peculiar conditions within each musculoskeletal district. While the contribution of genetic and epigenetic factors to knee OA is well-recognized, their precise role in disease management remains an area of active research. Such a field is particularly heterogeneous, calling for regular analysis and summarizing of the data that constantly emerge in the scientific literature, often sparse and scant of integration. The aim of this study was to systematically identify and synthesize all new evidence that emerged in human and animal model studies published between 2020 and 2023. This was necessary because, to the best of our knowledge, articles published before 2019 (and partly 2020) had already been included in systematic reviews that allowed to identify the ones concerning the knee joint. The review was carried out in accordance with Preferential Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Only peer-reviewed articles were considered for inclusion. A total of 40 studies were identified, showing promising results in terms either of biomarker identification, new insight in mechanism of action or potential therapeutic targets for knee OA. DNA methylation, histone modification and ncRNA were all mechanisms involved in epigenetic regulation of the knee. Most recent evidence suggests that epigenetics is a most promising field with the long-term goal of improving understanding and management of knee OA, but a variety of research approaches need greater consolidation.

The () gene is a paternally expressed imprinted gene, whose abnormal methylation appears to be associated with syndromes associated with the use of assisted reproductive techniques (ART), such as Angelman and Prader-Willi. Data present in the literature suggest the association between aberrant sperm gene methylation and abnormal sperm parameters. The latest meta-analysis on the methylation pattern of this gene in spermatozoa of infertile patients published in 2017 reported a higher degree of methylation in the spermatozoa of infertile patients compared to fertile controls. Here we provide an updated and comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of the sperm methylation pattern of the gene in patients with abnormal sperm parameters/infertility compared to men with normal sperm parameters/fertile. For the first time in the literature, we performed a meta-regression analysis to evaluate whether age or sperm concentration could influence the methylation status of this gene at the sperm level. This meta-analysis was registered in PROSPERO (n. CRD42023397056). The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P) and the MOOSE guidelines for meta-analyses and systematic reviews of observational studies were strictly followed in our meta-analysis. According to our Population Exposure Comparison Outcome (PECO) question, we included data from original articles assessing the levels of gene methylation at the sperm level in infertile patients or patients with abnormalities in one or more sperm parameters compared to fertile or normozoospermic men. Only six of 354 screened studies were included in the quantitative synthesis. Our analysis showed significantly higher levels of gene methylation in patients compared to controls. However, significant heterogeneity was found between studies. In sensitivity analysis, no studies were sensitive enough to skew the results. The Egger test showed no publication bias. In the meta-regression analysis, the results were independent of age and sperm concentration in the overall population. The same results were found in the control group. However, when analyzing the patient group, a direct correlation was found between methylation and age, indicating that the degree of methylation of the gene increases with advancing age. Fertility status or abnormality of sperm parameters is associated with a change in the methylation pattern of the gene, with higher levels found in infertile patients or those with abnormal sperm parameters compared to fertile men or men with normal sperm parameters. In the group of infertile patients/patients with abnormal sperm parameters, age was directly correlated to the degree of methylation, highlighting the presence of a mechanism that explains the age-related altered sperm quality and the risk of ART. Despite some limitations present in the analyzed studies, our results support the inclusion of methylation in the genetic panel of prospective studies aimed at identifying the most representative and cost-effective genes to analyze in couples who want to undergo ART.

OBJECTIVE
Anxiety and depression are prevalent mental health problems in people who use illicit stimulants. Improved understanding of the temporal relationship between methamphetamine, ecstasy/MDMA, or cocaine use with anxiety or depression informs public health interventions and treatment options for those experiencing this co-occurrence. This narrative systematic review sought to examine associations and temporality between the use of methamphetamine, ecstasy/MDMA, or cocaine, with anxiety or depressive symptoms. Method Systematic searches of 4 electronic databases were conducted up to August 2023. Study eligibility included the measurement of anxiety and/or depressive symptoms, and frequency of illicit stimulant use (methamphetamine, cocaine, or ecstasy/MDMA) at two separate time points, with data analysis of the association between these variables. The Joanna Briggs Critical Appraisal Checklist was utilised to assess quality. Data was extracted, and a narrative synthesis incorporating an eight-criteria framework to assess associations was conducted. Results 4432 studies were screened for eligibility; 11 studies (3 RCTs and 8 prospective cohort studies) were included. Evidence for an association between depressive symptoms and methamphetamine use was demonstrated in six studies, with temporal evidence in three studies supporting methamphetamine use preceding depressive symptoms. Three studies reported an association between cocaine use and depressive symptoms. Evidence for associations with any of the illicit stimulants and anxiety symptoms was lacking.
CONCLUSIONS
There was some evidence to support a case for temporality, particularly for methamphetamine use and depressive symptoms. Investing in longitudinal studies is pivotal to understanding the dynamic and reciprocal relationship between illicit stimulant use and anxiety or depressive symptoms. A limitation of the study was the variation in the measurement and analysis of outcomes.

The development of central nervous system (CNS) can form perceptual, memory, and cognitive functions, while injuries to CNS often lead to severe neurological dysfunction and even death. As one of the prevalent post-translational modifications (PTMs), O-GlcNAcylation has recently attracted great attentions due to its functions in regulating the activity, subcellular localization, and stability of target proteins. It has been indicated that O-GlcNAcylation could interact with phosphorylation, ubiquitination, and methylation to jointly regulate the function and activity of proteins. Furthermore, a growing number of studies have suggested that O-GlcNAcylation played an important role in the CNS. During development, O-GlcNAcylation participated in the neurogenesis, neuronal development, and neuronal function. In addition, O-GlcNAcylation was involved in the progress of CNS injuries including ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), and intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and played a crucial role in the improvement of brain damage such as attenuating cognitive impairment, inhibiting neuroinflammation, suppressing endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and maintaining blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity. Therefore, O-GlcNAcylation showed great promise as a potential target in CNS development and injuries. In this article, we presented a review highlighting the role of O-GlcNAcylation in CNS development and injuries. Hence, on the basis of these properties and effects, intervention with O-GlcNAcylation may be developed as therapeutic agents for CNS diseases.
