OBJECTIVES
This systematic review aimed at evaluating the reliability of dental maturation (DM) according to Demirjian method compared to hand and wrist maturation (HWM) to assess skeletal maturity (SM) in growing subjects, to identify the teeth and the corresponding mineralisation stages related to the pubertal growth spurt (PGS).
MATERIALS AND METHODS
PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were systematically searched until January 5th, 2024, to identify observational cross-sectional studies that assessed the reliability of Demirjian method compared to the HWM methods (i.e., Grave and Brown and Fishman) in growing subjects. The quality assessment was evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist.
RESULTS
Out of 136 papers suitable for title/abstract screening, 19 included studies. Of them, 17 papers showed the reliability of Demirjian DM method compared to HWM Fishman and Grave and Brown methods to assess SM in growing subjects. According to JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist, 12 papers were high-quality studies and 7 papers were medium-quality studies. Conclusions: The mandibular second molar might be considered as the best indicator compared to other teeth and that the peak of growth occurs no earlier than stage F in females and stage G in males according to Demirjian method. Also, the mandibular canine might be analysed as indicator of SM in males, and results suggest that the peak of growth occurs no earlier than maturation stage F according to Demirjian method, only in male subjects. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

BACKGROUND
Asbestos exposure can lead to asbestos-related diseases. The European Union (EU) has adopted regulations for workplaces where asbestos is present. The EU occupational exposure limit (OEL) for asbestos is 0.1 fibres per cubic centimetre of air (f/cm) as an eight-hour average. Different types of personal protective equipment (PPE) are available to provide protection and minimise exposure; however, their effectiveness is unclear.
OBJECTIVES
To assess the effects of personal protective equipment (PPE), including donning and doffing procedures and individual hygienic behaviour, compared to no availability and use of such equipment or alternative equipment, on asbestos exposure in workers in asbestos demolition and repair work.
SEARCH METHODS
We searched MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL, and Scopus (September 2022), and we checked the reference lists of included studies.
SELECTION CRITERIA
We included studies that measured asbestos concentration outside and inside PPE (considering outside concentration a surrogate for no PPE), exposure to asbestos after doffing PPE, donning and doffing errors, nonadherence to regulations, and adverse effects of PPE.
DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
Two review authors selected studies, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias using ROBINS-I. We categorised PPE as full-face filtering masks, supplied air respirators (SARs), and powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs). Values for asbestos outside and inside PPE were transformed to logarithmic values for random-effects meta-analysis. Pooled logarithmic mean differences (MDs) were exponentiated to obtain the ratio of means (RoM) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). The RoM shows the degree of protection provided by the respirators (workplace protection factor). Since the RoM is likely to be much higher at higher outside concentrations, we presented separate results according to the outside asbestos concentration, as follows. • Below 0.01 f/cm (band 1) • 0.01 f/cm to below 0.1 f/cm (band 2) • 0.1 f/cm to below 1 f/cm (band 3) • 1 f/cm to below 10 f/cm (band 4) • 10 f/cm to below 100 f/cm (band 5) • 100 f/cm to below 1000 f/cm (band 6) Additionally, we determined whether the inside concentrations per respirator and concentration band complied with the current EU OEL (0.1 f/cm) and proposed EU OEL (0.01 f/cm).
MAIN RESULTS
We identified six studies that measured asbestos concentrations outside and inside respiratory protective equipment (RPE) and one cross-over study that compared the effect of two different coveralls on body temperature. No studies evaluated the remaining predefined outcomes. Most studies were at overall moderate risk of bias due to insufficient reporting. The cross-over study was at high risk of bias. Full-face filtering masks Two studies evaluated full-face filtering masks. They provided insufficient data for band 1 and band 6. The results for the remaining bands were as follows. • Band 2: RoM 19 (95% CI 17.6 to 20.1; 1 study, 3 measurements; moderate certainty) • Band 3: RoM 69 (95% CI 26.6 to 175.9; 2 studies, 17 measurements; very low certainty) • Band 4: RoM 455 (95% CI 270.4 to 765.1; 1 study, 16 measurements; low certainty) • Band 5: RoM 2752 (95% CI 1236.5 to 6063.2;1 study, 3 measurements; low certainty) The inside measurements in band 5 did not comply with the EU OEL of 0.1 f/cm, and no inside measurements complied with the proposed EU OEL of 0.01 f/cm. Supplied air respirators Two studies evaluated supplied air respirators. They provided no data for band 6. The results for the remaining bands were as follows. • Band 1: RoM 11 (95% CI 7.6 to 14.9; 1 study, 134 measurements; moderate certainty) • Band 2: RoM 63 (95% CI 43.8 to 90.9; 1 study, 17 measurements; moderate certainty) • Band 3: RoM 528 (95% CI 368.7 to 757.5; 1 study, 38 measurements; moderate certainty) • Band 4: RoM 4638 (95% CI 3071.7 to 7044.5; 1 study, 49 measurements; moderate certainty) • Band 5: RoM 26,134 (16,647.2 to 41,357.1; 1 study, 22 measurements; moderate certainty) All inside measurements complied with the current OEL of 0.1 f/cm and the proposed OEL of 0.01 f/cm. Powered air-purifying respirators Three studies evaluated PAPRs. The results per band were as follows. • Band 1: RoM 8 (95% CI 3.7 to 19.1; 1 study, 23 measurements; moderate certainty) • Band 2: RoM 90 (95% CI 64.7 to 126.5; 1 study, 17 measurements; moderate certainty) • Band 3: RoM 104 (95% CI 23.1 to 464.1; 3 studies, 14 measurements; very low certainty) • Band 4: RoM 706 (95% CI 219.2 to 2253.0; 2 studies, 43 measurements; very low certainty) • Band 5: RoM 1366 (544.6 to 3428.9; 2 studies, 8 measurements; low certainty) • Band 6: RoM 18,958 (95% CI 4023.9 to 90,219.4; 2 studies, 13 measurements; very low certainty) All inside measurements complied with the 0.1 f/cm OEL when the outside concentration was below 10 f/cm (band 1 to band 4). From band 3, no measurements complied with the proposed OEL of 0.01 f/cm. Different types of coveralls One study reported the adverse effects of coveralls. A polyethylene suit may increase the body temperature more than a ventilated impermeable polyvinyl (PVC) coverall, but the evidence is very uncertain (MD 0.17 °C, 95% CI -0.08 to 0.42; 1 study, 11 participants; very low certainty).
AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS
Where the outside asbestos concentration is below 0.1 f/cm, SARS and PAPRs likely reduce exposure to below the proposed OEL of 0.01 f/cm. For outside concentrations up to 10 f/cm, all respirators may reduce exposure below the current OEL, but only SAR also below the proposed OEL. In band 5 (10 to < 100 f/cm), full-face filtering masks may not reduce asbestos exposure below either OEL, SARs likely reduce exposure below both OELs, and there were no data for PAPRs. In band 6 (100 f/cm to < 1000 f/cm), PAPRs may not reduce exposure below either OEL, and there were no data for full-face filtering masks or SARs. Some coveralls may increase body temperature more than others. Randomised studies are needed to directly compare PAPRs and SARs at higher asbestos concentrations and to assess adverse effects. Future studies should assess the effects of doffing procedures.

BACKGROUND
Leptin has a great effect on bone through direct or indirect involvement in bone remodeling. Considering the ambiguities that exist regarding the effect of leptin on bone and bone-related diseases including osteoporosis, in this study, we aimed to conduct a systematic review of various studies on the effect of leptin on osteoporosis, which may find an answer to the existing ambiguities.
METHODS
The search was performed to review studies on the effects of leptin on osteoporosis by using several databases including Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Electronic searches were conducted on 5 Jan 2023. There was no limit on the publication date of the articles. The risk of bias for the animal study was assessed with the CAMARADES checklist, and the study quality assessment was also assessed based on the guidelines for in vivo experiments (ARRIVE). In this study, the risk of bias (quality) of human studies was assessed using the quality assessment checklists by NHLBI.
RESULTS
Overall, 34 articles were included for data extraction and quality assessment. Overall, 27 human studies and seven animal studies were included in the article. The results of most of the studies conducted in this study showed that leptin has a physiological role in maintaining bone mass and better bone quality and reduces bone marrow adipogenesis and increases bone mineral density (BMD). As plasma leptin levels increased, BMD values or bone formation biomarkers increased.
CONCLUSION
Leptin has an inhibitory role against bone resorption and increasing osteoprotegerin (OPG) levels, which, as a result, maintains bone density and reduces osteoclast activity, and has a positive relationship with increasing osteocalcin.

Evidence about feeding practices' consequences in small for gestational age newborns is not well established because they are less likely to initiate and continue breastfeeding than other newborns. Our aim was to study current knowledge about the benefits of exclusive human milk diet after 2 years of age in small for gestational age newborns. A systematic review of the literature was conducted according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline criteria. Pubmed and Scopus were searched for studies published from databases inception until June 2, 2023. Included articles were analysed and synthesised. Risk of bias and level of evidence assessments were performed. They were enrolled small for gestational age newborns fed by breastfeeding, breast milk or donor milk. The systematic review included 9 articles which were related to 4 health domains: neurodevelopment, cardiovascular, somatic growth and bone mineralization and atopy. Extracted data support a beneficial effect of breastfeeding on these outcomes. Better quality of evidence and longer follow-up are needed.

The aim of this study was to carry out a systematic review to compare and analyse the bone mineral density of field hockey players of both sexes and of different ages, with other sports and with a sedentary population. The search process was carried out using the PubMed, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science and Scopus databases. The search ended on 18 March 2024. We selected articles in which a comparison was made of bone mineral density of the whole body, lumbar spine, femoral neck, arms and legs, among field hockey players, and/or with other sports and/or with a sedentary population. The systematic review followed the guidelines described in the 2020 PRISMA statement. The initial search identified 220 articles. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the search was narrowed down to seven articles in total. It was observed that the field hockey group had better bone mineral density values than sedentary population and the low-impact sports population. Basketball players had better whole body and leg bone mineral density values than field hockey players. Causality could not be established due to the cross-sectional nature of the included studies. The better bone mineral density values in field hockey players compared to the sedentary population may be because people who participate in impact sports have a better bone mineral density. The differences in bone mineral density between field hockey and low-impact sports could be related to a lower impact during their practice in these disciplines.

BACKGROUND
It is well known that adjuvant tamoxifen treatment for breast cancer in postmenopausal women decreased bone loss. However, the effects of adjuvant tamoxifen therapy on bone mineral density (BMD) in premenopausal patients with breast cancer remains uncertain. Tamoxifen would have a potential impact of premenopausal BMD on health. The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess this in premenopausal women with primary breast cancer.
METHODS
Through April 2020, studies reporting BMD changes of lumbar spine or hip in premenopausal women with primary breast cancer treated with adjuvant tamoxifen and tamoxifen plus chemotherapy or ovarian function suppression (OFS) were collected from EMBASE and PubMed. The meta-analysis was performed using random effects model of the standardized mean difference (SMD) of BMD in patients.
RESULTS
A total of 1432 premenopausal patients were enrolled in eight studies, involving 198 patients treated with tamoxifen alone in three studies. After a 3-year median follow-up, adjuvant tamoxifen decreased the lumbar spinal and hip BMD by as much as an SMD of -1.17 [95% confidence interval (CI); -1.58 to -0.76)] and -0.66 (95% CI, -1.55 to 0.23), respectively. In subgroup analysis in patients treated adjuvant tamoxifen and tamoxifen plus chemotherapy or OFS according to follow-up duration, the bone change of < 3 years follow-up group was -0.03 SMD (95% CI, -0.47 to 0.41) and that of ≥ 3 years follow-up group was -1.06 SMD (95% CI, -1.48 to -0.64). Compared with patients who received tamoxifen alone, patients who received combination therapy with chemotherapy or OFS showed lesser bone loss at the lumbar spine.
CONCLUSIONS
Our meta-analysis demonstrated that adjuvant tamoxifen therapy in premenopausal patients caused bone loss after 3 years of follow-up, especially at the lumbar spines. For a definite evaluation of the adverse effects of tamoxifen on bone, it is necessary to accumulate more relevant studies.

IMPORTANCE
The increasing attention to the management of perimenopausal and postmenopausal women parallels the growth of the aging population. Although hormone therapy is commonly used to alleviate menopausal symptoms, it carries a potential risk of cancer. Recently, mind-body exercises have emerged as innovative approaches for improving menopausal symptoms and bone health. However, research findings have needed to be more consistent, highlighting the significance of this study's systematic review of mind-body exercise effects on perimenopausal and postmenopausal women.
OBJECTIVE
This study aims to evaluate the impact of mind-body exercises, including tai chi, yoga, Pilates, qigong, baduanjin, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, on bone mineral density, sleep quality, anxiety, depression, and fatigue among perimenopausal and postmenopausal women.
EVIDENCE REVIEW
Four electronic databases-PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science-were systematically searched from inception until July 2023. The search focused exclusively on randomized controlled trials to examine the impact of mind-body exercise interventions on perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. The methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Cochrane Bias Risk Assessment tool.
FINDINGS
A total of 11 randomized controlled trials, comprising 1,005 participants, were included in the analysis. Traditional meta-analysis indicated that mind-body exercise significantly enhanced bone mineral density in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women compared with control groups, with a standardized mean difference (SMD) of 0.41 (95% CI, 0.17 to 0.66; P = 0.001, I2 = 7%). In addition, significant improvements were observed in sleep quality (SMD, -0.48; 95% CI, -0.78 to -0.17; P = 0.002, I2 = 76%), anxiety reduction (SMD, -0.80; 95% CI, -1.23 to -0.38; P = 0.0002, I2 = 84%), depressive mood (SMD, -0.80; 95% CI, -1.17 to -0.44; P < 0.0001, I2 = 79%), and fatigue (SMD, -0.67; 95% CI, -0.97 to -0.37; P < 0.0001, I2 = 0%).
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE
The findings of this meta-analysis demonstrate that mind-body exercise positively influences bone mineral density, sleep quality, anxiety, depression, and fatigue among perimenopausal and postmenopausal women.

BACKGROUND
Parkinson disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder, but its pathogenesis is still not entirely understood. While some trace elements, such as selenium, iron, and copper, are considered pivotal in PD onset due to their role in oxidative stress, the association between selenium concentrations and PD susceptibility remains ambiguous.
METHODS
A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in adherence to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines and framed by the Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome paradigm. Data were sourced from 4 prominent electronic databases: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. Eligible studies must have had a PD case group and a control group, both of which presented data on selenium concentrations. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale.
RESULTS
Of 1541 initially identified articles, 12 studies comprising a total of 597 PD cases and 733 controls were selected for the meta-analysis. Pronounced heterogeneity was observed among these studies. When assessing blood selenium levels, no significant difference was found between patients with PD and the controls. However, when examining the cerebrospinal fluid, selenium levels in PD patients were significantly elevated compared to controls (standard mean difference = 1.21, 95% CI 0.04-2.39, P < .05). Subgroup analyses, sensitivity analyses, and evaluation of publication bias were performed to ensure data robustness.
CONCLUSIONS
Elevated selenium levels in cerebrospinal fluid may be associated with a higher risk of Parkinson. Further prospective research is required to solidify this potential link and to offer avenues for novel therapeutic interventions or preventive measures.

The Effect of Osteoporosis on Complications and Reoperation Rates After Surgical Management of Adult Thoracolumbar Spinal Deformity: A Systematic Review and Meta Analysis.

OBJECTIVES
While substantial research has explored the impact of osteoporosis on patients undergoing adult spinal deformity (ASD) correction, the literature remains inconclusive. As such, the purpose of this study is to synthesize and analyze existing studies pertaining to osteoporosis as a predictor of postoperative outcomes in ASD surgery.
METHODS
We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the effect that a diagnosis of osteoporosis, based on ICD-10 coding, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) or computed tomography, has on the incidence of adverse outcomes following surgical correction of ASD. Statistical analysis was performed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (Version 2) using a random effects model to account for heterogeneity between studies.
RESULTS
After application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 36 and 28 articles were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis, respectively. The meta-analysis identified greater rates of screw loosening amongst osteoporotic patients (70.5% vs 31.9%, = .009), and decreased bone mineral density in patients who developed proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) (.69 vs .79 g/cm, = .001). The systematic review demonstrated significantly increased risk of any complication, reoperation, and proximal junctional failure (PJF) associated with reduced bone density. No statistical difference was observed between groups regarding fusion rates, readmission rates, and patient-reported and/or functional outcome scores.
CONCLUSION
This study demonstrates a higher incidence of screw loosening, PJK, and revision surgery amongst osteoporotic ASD patients. Future investigations should explore outcomes at various follow-up intervals in order to better characterize how risk changes with time and to tailor preoperative planning based on patient-specific characteristics.

This systematic review aimedto evaluate the remineralizing efficacy of calcium sucrose phosphate (CaSP) for the treatment of white spot lesions (WSLs) that commonly occur after orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances using various randomized controlled trials (RCTs) available in the literature todate.
HIGHLIGHTS
Adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes (PRISMA) guidelines, RCTs that assessed the efficacious remineralizing potential of CaSP on WSLs and demineralized enamel and compared it with either no intervention or other remineralizing agents wereselected. The methodological rigor of the included studies was subjected to the Risk of Bias tool-2 (ROB-2) and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) tools. Furthermore, a Begg's Funnel Plot was used to assess publication bias. The qualitative analysis encompassed a corpus of 36 studies. The remineralization potential of CaSP was investigated using an array of parameters, including surface microhardness, surface morphology, surface roughness, mineral content, and lesion size and depth. Based on the ROB-2 tool, most of the included studies were judged to be high risk, largely attributable to the presence of attrition bias. Using the GRADE framework, the certainty of evidence was determined to be moderate.
CONCLUSION
This systematic review reveals that CaSP yields favorableoutcomes in terms of increased surface microhardness and calcium-phosphate content, reduced demineralized area and surface roughness, and enhanced surface topography.
