Colorectal cancer incidence (CRC) is influenced by dietary factors, yet the impact of diet on CRC-specific mortality and recurrence-free survival (RFS) remains unclear. This review provides a narrative summary of existing research on dietary factors affecting CRC-specific mortality, RFS, and disease-free survival (DFS). This study searched electronic databases to identify cross-sectional/prospective research investigating dietary intake on CRC-specific mortality, RFS, or DFS. Twenty-eight studies were included in the corpus. Because of high study heterogeneity, we performed a narrative synthesis of studies. Limited, but suggestive evidence indicates beneficial effects of adhering to the American Cancer Society (ACS) guidelines and a plant rich low-carbohydrate diet on risk of CRC-specific mortality, potentially driven by fiber from cereals, vegetables, and wholegrains, but not fruit. For RFS and DFS, a Western dietary pattern, high intake of refined grains, and sugar sweetened beverages correlated with increased risk of CRC recurrence and development of disease/death. Conversely, greater adherence to the ACS dietary and alcohol guidelines, higher ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, and dark fish consumption reduced risk. Our findings underscore the need for (i) standardized investigations into diet's role in CRC survivorship, including endpoints, and (ii) comprehensive analyses to isolate specific effects within correlated lifestyle components.

BACKGROUND
This systematic review assessed the effectiveness of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in patients with recurrent oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).
METHODS
Clinical studies on recurrent OSCC treated with PDT alone were included. Combined treatment strategies were excluded. The search was performed on Medline/Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science and ClinicalTrials.gov, manual search, and grey literature.
RESULTS
The eleven included studies were observational. The risk of bias and methodological quality were evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. The studies reported the use of hematoporphyrin derivative, Photofrin, Foscan and 5-aminolevulinic acid. Data on treatment response and survival was collected. Secondarily, postoperative courses and patient's quality of life/acceptance were reported whenever available. Photofrin and Foscan were the most used photosensitisers, with more complete responses. Lesions responding less favourably were on posterior regions or deep-seated in the tissue.
CONCLUSIONS
Although treatment response differs between treatment protocols, PDT stands as a viable treatment option to be considered, as it can achieve therapeutic results and disease-free, long-lasting periods. Partial treatment responses may be of interest when achieving eligibility for other treatment strategies. Despite this study's limitations, which considered four photosensitisers, Photofrin was the most used but more recent photosensitisers like Foscan have greater chemical stability, tissue penetration, and may be more efficacious on recurrent OSCC.

Insulin Pump Therapy and Adverse Skin Reactions With Focus on Allergic Contact Dermatitis in Individuals Living With Diabetes Mellitus: A Systematic Review and Clinical-Based Update.
BACKGROUND
The use of insulin pumps (continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion [CSII]) in individuals living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) improves disease control. However, adverse skin reactions may hamper compliance. We aimed to assess the relationship of insulin pumps, particularly that of infusion set therapy, used in children and adults with T1D and dermatitis including allergic contact dermatitis (ACD).
METHODS
A systematic search of PubMed, and EMBASE, of full-text studies reporting dermatitis in persons with diabetes using a CSII was conducted from 2020 to 2023. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to assess study quality. The inventory performed at the Department of Occupational and Environmental Dermatology, Malmö, Sweden (YMDA) was also performed highlighting the diagnostic process.
RESULTS
Among the 391 screened abstracts, 21 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Seven studies included data on children only, four studies were on adults, and nine studies reported data on both children and adults. Participants were exposed to a broad range of pumps. Dermatitis was rarely specified. Up to 60% of those referred to a university hospital due to skin reactions possibly related to insulin pumps had an ACD.
CONCLUSIONS
The review and our findings indicate that there is not sufficient focus on contact allergy in the primary toxicological evaluations of substances used also for insulin pump therapy products and that possible adverse skin reactions are not correctly followed up in the clinical setting.

OBJECTIVE
Systematic review of current evidence to analyze the prevalence of extracranial large vessel vasculitis (LVV) using F-FDG PET/CT in patients with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) or giant cell arteritis (GCA).
MATERIALS AND METHODS
PubMed and EMBASE were searched and the results were screened by two reviewers. Study quality was assessed using a modified version of the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Heterogeneity between studies was assessed using the I statistic and the Q test. Further subgroup analyses were performed by disease type, study quality, and F-FDG PET/CT uptake criteria. Publication bias was assessed by funnel plot and Egger's test.
RESULTS
268 publications were identified, of which 17 met the selection criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. The overall pooled prevalence of extracranial LVV by F-FDG PET/CT was 54.5% [95% CI: 42.6%-66.1%]. In patients with GCA the prevalence was significantly higher than in patients with PMR (60.1% vs. 41.8%, P = 0.006). Likewise, studies with a lower risk of bias reported a higher prevalence of extracranial LVV (61.1% vs. 46.9%; P = 0.010). No publication bias was observed.
CONCLUSIONS
The F-FDG PET/CT test may be useful in the detection of extracranial LVV, both in patients with PMR or GCA. Such involvement is more frequent in patients with GCA, and may vary depending on the quality of the studies.

BACKGROUND & AIMS
Malnutrition, a significant problem in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), is linked to lower health-related quality of life, longer and more frequent hospital admissions, worse functional capacity, and higher levels of morbidity. However, the extent of its impact on mortality is poorly elucidated. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the impact of malnutrition on mortality among CKD patients on dialysis.
METHODS
This meta-analysis was designed and performed in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines (CRD42023394584). A systematic electronic literature search was conducted in PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Embase to identify relevant cohort studies. The studies that reported nutritional status and its impact on mortality in patients were considered for analysis. The generic inverse variance method was used to pool the hazard ratio effect estimates by employing a random effects model. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used for the quality assessment. The statistical analysis was performed by utilizing RevMan and CMA 2.0.
RESULTS
A total of 29 studies that comprised 11,063 patients on dialysis whose nutritional status was evaluated were eligible for quantitative analysis. Based on a comparison between the "malnutrition" category and the reference "normal nutrition status" category, the results showed that the overall pooled hazard risk (HR) for mortality was (HR 1.49, 95% CI: 1.36-1.64, p < 0.0001). According to the subgroup analysis, the hemodialysis subgroup had greater mortality hazards (HR 1.53; 95% CI 1.38-1.70, p < 0.0001), compared to the peritoneal dialysis subgroup (HR 1.26; 95% CI 1.15-1.37, p < 0.00001). Additionally, the overall incidence of mortality was explored but the authors were unable to combine the results due to limitations with the data.
CONCLUSION
The findings conclude that malnutrition is a strong predictor of mortality among patients on dialysis, with the hemodialysis subgroup having a higher mortality hazard compared to the peritoneal dialysis subgroup. The results of this study will advocate for early nutritional evaluation and timely dietary interventions to halt the progression of CKD and death.

PURPOSE
To evaluate the relative contributions of objective and subjective indicators of dry eye disease (DED) in individuals with chronic pain conditions compared with controls.
METHODS
A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted of studies that reported the signs and symptoms of DED and/or their prevalence in individuals with chronic pain compared with controls. International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-11 codes for chronic pain conditions were applied, and outcomes defined as DED signs and symptoms. A search strategy utilised the EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and MEDLINE databases. Risk of bias assessment was performed with the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Random effects meta-analysis calculated mean differences (MD) and odds ratios (OR), while subgroup analysis of different chronic pain conditions explored their relative association with the signs and symptoms of DED. Evidence certainty was evaluated using Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE).
RESULTS
Fourteen observational studies comprising 3,281,882 individuals were included. Meta-analysis found high quality evidence that individuals with chronic pain were more likely to experience symptoms of DED than controls (OR = 3.51 [95 %CI: 3.45,3.57]). These symptoms were more severe (MD = 18.53 [95 %CI: 11.90, 25.15]) than controls with a clinically meaningful effect size. Individuals with chronic pain had more rapid tear film disruption (MD = -2.45 [95 %CI: -4.20, -0.70]) and reduced tear production (MD = -5.57 [95 %CI: -9.56, -1.57]) compared with controls (with moderate evidence quality). High quality evidence revealed individuals with chronic pain had lower basal tear production (anaesthetised) than controls (MD = -2.59 [95 %CI: -3.60, -1.58]). Tear film osmolarity showed no significant differences between the chronic pain and pain-free groups. Group differences for DED signs were not considered clinically meaningful.
CONCLUSION
More severe, clinically meaningful symptoms of DED were reported in individuals with chronic pain than controls, however group differences for the signs of DED were typically of limited or questionable clinical relevance. This ocular phenotype where DED is felt more than it is seen in chronic pain may reflect underlying sensory hypersensitivity, shared by both conditions and contributing to their frequent comorbidity. Advancing understanding of this potential pathophysiological mechanism may guide clinical management.

OBJECTIVE
Spinal chordoma treatment guidelines recommend resection. However, in patients in whom gross-total resection (GTR) is achieved, the benefits of radiation therapy (RT) are unclear. Therefore, the authors performed a systematic review to determine if RT is associated with postoperative progression-free survival (PFS) or overall survival (OS) after achieving GTR of spinal chordoma.
METHODS
The PubMed database was searched for studies including individualized data of patients undergoing GTR with or without RT for spinal chordoma. Patients < 18 years of age or those who underwent stereotactic body RT were excluded. Qualitative assessment was performed using Newcastle-Ottawa Scale guidelines. Log-rank tests for time-to-event data and a Cox proportional-hazards model were generated for a multivariable statistical model.
RESULTS
Complete data of 132 patients were retrieved, with 37 (28%) patients receiving adjuvant RT and 95 (72%) not receiving adjuvant RT. The mean follow-up was not statistically significantly different between those undergoing RT and not undergoing RT (54.02 months and 65.43 months, respectively). Patients were more likely not to undergo RT if their disease was located in the sacrum versus the mobile spine (p < 0.001). When controlling for age ≥ 65 years, male sex, disease location, and treatment year ≥ 2010, patients undergoing RT had similar PFS and OS when compared with those not undergoing RT on multivariable survival analysis (HR 0.935 [95% CI 0.703-2.340], p = 0.844 and HR 2.078 [95% CI 0.848-5.090], p = 0.110, respectively). However, age ≥ 65 years was associated with poorer OS in adjusted analyses (HR 2.761 [95% CI 1.185-6.432], p = 0.018) relative to patients < 65 years of age.
CONCLUSIONS
After achieving GTR of spinal chordoma, the utility of RT on PFS and OS remains unclear. Age ≥ 65 years appears to be associated with OS in spinal chordoma patients. Additional multicenter prospective studies are needed to determine the utility of RT in this patient population.

The aim of this study was to analyze the role of thiol/disulfide homeostasis (TDH) parameters as an indicator of oxidative stress in acute appendicitis (AA). PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were systematically searched. Studies reporting on TDH in AA (both complicated and uncomplicated cases) were included. The comparator group were healthy controls. The TDH domain was compared between the groups using anti-oxidant parameters, namely native thiol and total thiol levels, and native thiol/total thiol ratio; and oxidant parameters, namely disulfide level, disulfide/native thiol ratio, and disulfide/total thiol ratio. The statistical analysis was performed using a random-effects model. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed utilizing the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Eleven studies with a total of 926 subjects, comprising 457 patients with uncomplicated appendicitis, 147 with complicated appendicitis, and 322 healthy controls were included. Our study demonstrated significantly increased oxidative stress in AA as compared to healthy controls in all TDH parameters and significantly lower total thiol levels in complicated AA as compared to uncomplicated AA. Due to a poor methodological quality in five out of eleven studies, future prospective studies with adequate power are essential to validate these observations and refine the diagnostic approaches to AA.

BACKGROUND
Chronic systolic heart failure (CSHF) is a significant health burden with high morbidity and mortality. The role of subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) in the prognosis of CSHF patients remains a critical area of inquiry. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to elucidate the impact of SCH on the prognosis of patients with CSHF.
METHODS
Adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, this meta-analysis employed a comprehensive search strategy across major databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. The Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome framework guided the inclusion of studies focusing on patients with CSHF, comparing those with and without SCH. Quality assessment was performed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Statistical analyses assessed heterogeneity and publication bias, employing fixed-effect or random-effects models based on heterogeneity levels.
RESULTS
From an initial pool of 1439 articles, 8 studies met the stringent inclusion criteria. These studies, conducted across diverse geographical regions, highlighted the relationship between SCH and all-cause mortality, cardiac events, and subgroup differences in CSHF patients. The meta-analysis revealed SCH as a significant risk factor for all-cause mortality (HR = 1.42) and cardiac events (HR = 1.46). Subgroup analysis indicated variability in risk based on region, sample size, age, and follow-up duration. Sensitivity analysis confirmed the stability of these findings, and publication bias assessment indicated symmetric funnel plot and nonsignificant Egger test results.
CONCLUSIONS
SCH emerges as a predictive factor for all-cause mortality, cardiovascular events, and rehospitalization in CSHF patients. This finding underscores the importance of screening for SCH in CSHF patients, highlighting its potential role in improving patient prognosis.

BACKGROUND
Tobacco use is recognized as a major cause of cardiovascular disease, which is associated with endothelial dysfunction. Endothelial function is evaluated using flow-mediated dilation (FMD), which is a noninvasive method. This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the association between smoking exposure and endothelial function evaluated using FMD values.
METHODS
We searched the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases for cohort studies of smokers or passive smokers that used FMD to assess endothelial function. The primary outcome of the study was the change in the rate of FMD. The risk of bias was evaluated using the Cochrane Collaboration tool and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Further, the weighted mean difference was used to analyze the continuous data.
RESULTS
Overall, 14 of 1426 articles were included in this study. The results of these articles indicated that smoking is a major cause of endothelial dysfunction and altered FMD; a pooled effect size of - 3.15 was obtained with a 95% confidence interval of (- 3.84, - 2.46). Notably, pregnancy status, Asian ethnicity, or health status did not affect heterogeneity.
CONCLUSIONS
We found that smoking has a significant negative impact on FMD, and measures such as medication or education for smoking cessation may improve endothelial function and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
